I wish every photographer taught this way Gary. I actually think other photographers deliberately leave settings out, but you teach those essential details and I’m so grateful I found your channel. As for the photoshop bit, it’s just knowing how to use layers an the brush tool, so I’m good there. Thank you Gary!
Pointing out that the meter in the middle just means an average of a mid exposure & not an 'appropriate' exposure would be good for beginners. Beginners think 'proper or correct' exposure means they will get what they see.
Been practising your Model Training: Drifting Slowly and Eyes Back to the Camera. I discovered recently that I get the best expressions if I'm quick enough to take the shot while the model is still moving, rather than when she comes to a resting point or holds/stops for a moment.
Oh I love doing the blending technique. I have never used a flash to paint my subject before. I have been using a flash light/torch to paint in the light at night and capture the Milky Way in with it. This is actually better and I will try this next time thanks for the tip
Gary you are making every day a school day lately, great variety of subjects the last couple of weeks 👏👏👏 But you did seem quite excited shooting this Vlog 🤣🤣🤣 Thank you 👍
If you have parts of the scene that are just that 'bit' to high to reach...glue a hot shoe onto a walking stick ( or something along those lines ) then you can lift the flash up higher ! Works well on building where there's a feature you might not normally get ;-)
Olympus/OM cameras allow this to be done in-camera using "live composite mode". The camera shoots a sequence of images but only records any changes in the image then stacks them in camera to produce the finished picture. It's designed for light painting.
You just won a subscriber Gary! A quality video that will come in hand in the future, speaking about me going deep into the outdoors flash photography. I have one question thought, I have read an article about how the shutter speed affects the power of the off flash due to the speed sync. Is it a myth or a precaution I need to be aware of? Looking forward to your answer, thank you!
And I have to say Gary, I always love watching your videos, but this one was out of the park. Absolutely fantastic. I have just bought a godox flash and trigger and was thinking about going out and trying something like this. It couldn’t have come at a better time thank you very much. Very much appreciated.🎉🎉🎉❤
I was lucky enough to go on one of Gary's wedding photography courses many years ago. He is absolutely brilliant. Teaches you everything you need to know and more. Good to see you are still teaching Gary. Keep up the amazing work :-)
Gary, I just happened upon your channel. I’m so happy that I found you. You taught in a simple way that I could understand. Your photos looked fantastic. Can’t wait to learn more from you
Excellent video Gary more info in this video that a 100 others on the subject ! thankfully Lee left his mankini at home 😀 really loved the colour version of the Mig. Thank you.
Another great video Gary. You explain all your video's brilliantly so that everyone can understand. Absolutely brilliant image's. When doing something like the plane can this be done in Lightroom as i don't have Photoshop.
Very informative and well presented Gary. I've been wanting to learn all about flash for some time now, you make it look really straightforward. BTW, was that North Landing, Flamborough in the 1st part?
If you didn't have a trigger for your flash, could you use a long exposure, self timer and fire the flash from your hand when the shutter's open Gary? Thinking about dawn and dusk architectural images?
Absolutely brilliant content. Thanks for providing. I never used off camera flash lights, but your nice vlog has made me curious to test it. Thanks a lot. By the way I have seen almost of of your you tube videos, and I am happy to had the chance to step in and learning so much about photography. Thanks Cheers Chris
Thanks for this Gary, you've made it so very clear! Now to buy a remote flash, I have checked on ebay and they sell the flash you referred to and a trigger for around 120 USD, can you recommend a trigger or do you use the Yongnuo YN560 IV YN560IV Speedlite 2.4G Wireless Flash Light +YN560TX II trigger? I can then head down to my local MIG 15,17,19, 21, 23, 25 and 27 museum and have a field day! Cheers.
PS - the downside of Sony is that their hotshoes don't work with many 3rd party triggers and off camera flash..... another down side of being a Sony owner
Looks great but that’s a lot of photoshop work and not everyone’s as adept at the editing as you are, would be good to see the editing process in full… 👍🇬🇧
Thank you Gary that was really interesting, but could you give me a little more info about the trigger. Do I need to set anything up in camera first so it recognises the trigger, and also the flash, are there any settings in camera for that? What make trigger is it, Sorry for all the questions, but it's something I would really like to try.
Fantastic, and what's even better I know where those aircraft are, I'm surprised you didn't take pictures of the old Russian attack helicopter or the tank. I'm a complete novice I've just ordered the Yongnuo YN560-IV but could you tell me what remote trigger I need for the hot shoe on my camera, which is an EOS 1300D, please?
Yeah I’m not a photographer so I just use Lightroom because it was a lot cheaper than photoshop and I don’t know if you can merge all the photos like that with Lightroom. Would it be possible to just use some low power alternate light sources or a few flashes at really low power to achieve similar effects
Hi Gary, A bit ashamed to have to admit to having misplaced the videos of the 7 part post processing course. I know I have them safely tucked away somewhere on my computer, but after a fair bit of searching around I have not so far tracked them down. Can I download them again, or is there an easy way to pinpoint just where they are, and to be able to start out again to try to make a better job of printing some stuff. Hoping there is a magic wand, which I can shake at my computer. It would be better than going out tone garage for that big lump hammer. !! On second thoughts a bit of practice with the lump hammer might not be such a bad thing.
Hi gary just a quick question, I have a canon 5d mark iii and canon 430ex speedlite will a X1T-C godox wireless trigger work with the speedlite off camera thanks 😊
Gary, how did you take the cockpit flash pictures? Was the inside of the cockpit accessible or was the flash placed just outside it and it created the necessary ambiance?
The location can be found with a bit of help from Uncle Google, so it should be stressed that you should always seek to to ask permission to visit the area and respect the answer.

Kind of you to say. Cheers 👍👍
I was too poor to support my family until God connected me with Mr. David Martin who changed my life financially.

Cheers 👍👍
Good teacher .thank you
You are welcome
Really like the way you never talk down to your viewers and you accept that it sometimes takes a while to process the information.
Got my first flash ever today and it's a cheap manual one. This tutorial is really helpful, thanks!
Nice video Gary. Keep up the good work. ❤
Fantastic! Demystifying off camera flash. Guess what I'm going to try next!!! Hahaha
A fantastic tutorial as always The best You Tuber by a country mile!!!! I wondered what happened to part 3?
Cheers Peter 👍👍
What a great idea. I us3d to mess like this yeara ago in the camera club never thought to video it haha. I now need to find that plane haha
Be warned Paul, Off Camera flash is infectious 😁😁 hope you’re well? xx
@Gary Gough I used to follow a couple people back in the day. You are good at it. I am well thanks. Uou
This is an outstanding tutorial. Thank you.
Very kind, thank you 👍👍

Beautiful. I wish you would have been more descriptive on paint brush and layers. That would’ve really helped.
Wow I learn a lot today!! Great video! Great pictures!📸
I'm going out this week for my first attempt at using the flash.
Wish me luck
You won’t need luck, it’s a science. Just follow the steps shown 👍👍
You are simply the best on UA-cam in explaining and showing your work. Amazing job
Gary bedankt voor je uitleg het was heel duidelijk 😉
Very welcome, thanks
This is simply awesome technique. Never seen this before anywhere. I am so glad that I came across your UA-cam channel.
Thank you for making the basics of off-camera flash photography accessible! This is probably the clearest explanation I've come across.
I did struggle with off camera flash until this tutorial! Thank you so much Gary! This is so easy to understand ❤
Good stuff here, Sir Gary. Liked and subbed!
Cheers. Blimey, that’s an old video. Plenty of newer ones to choose from 👍👍
Simple and easy understand approach. Thanks Gary!

Or adapt a mono-pod. That will also provide the ability to adjust the extension height to the extent of the mono-pod length.

The "Mig" is a Sukhoi
Awesome ❤.... Excellent simple. Many thanks 👍
Very clear and an excellent guide to experimenting with off camera flash. Thanks.
Thank you soooo much!!!

As always. Thanks, Gary, for the education. It is much appreciated
Really nice 😊
Love this , great tutorial as always and fantastic shot of the MiG , definitely something im going to have to try.
Throughly enjoyed that one! Nice coat by the way 😊
Gary it's years since I used flash, probably back in the film days lol, awesome tutorial, must go and dig out the old flash. Thanks for sharing.
Great video and different to the usual landscape. Time to get a remote flash trigger :)
Thank you, Gary. This is first on my list to practice.
Really good, Gary. Many thanks.
Excellent video Gary more info in this video that a 100 others on the subject ! thankfully Lee left his mankini at home 😀 really loved the colour version of the Mig. Thank you.
Terrific and love light painting in images Gary 👍🏽
Thank you Gary for explaining this technique in a concise and easy to follow way. I will need to try it and see if it is really this easy. Ken
It really is 👍👍

If you didn't have a trigger for your flash, could you use a long exposure, self timer and fire the flash from your hand when the shutter's open Gary?
Thinking about dawn and dusk architectural images?
You can as long as the ambient light is low enough to warrant a long shutter 👍👍 Unless there is movement in the frame of course
Wow

Very good indeed. Could a similar effect be made by light painting with a torch?
Looks great but that’s a lot of photoshop work and not everyone’s as adept at the editing as you are, would be good to see the editing process in full… 👍🇬🇧
Looks like a lot of Fun Gary, is it possible to blend in Lightroom, just not a confident Photoshop user??
Thank you Gary that was really interesting, but could you give me a little more info about the trigger. I think one of these will do the trick "Yongnuo YN560-TX"

Gary, how did you take the cockpit flash pictures? Was the inside of the cockpit accessible or was the flash placed just outside it and it created the necessary ambiance?
Just flashed it through the glass.
What flash triggers are you using? Assume as you say that the flash doesn't need a receiver on it?
The location can be found with a bit of help from Uncle Google, so it should be stressed that you should always seek to to ask permission to visit the area and respect the answer.
The answer will always be no unless escorted. As its trespassing an active site.
Wow - consider mind blown, of to google mpb for a camera flash, would those Migs be anywhere near North Wales
Cheers Paul, they’re north of England m8, sorry
@Gary Gough not a problem have camera, will travel
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
That plane is Su 20 or 22. Not mig
not sure but it looked to me like mig 21.
Su-22M4 for sure
still looks like black magic to me :) I think the flash YN560 are around £100
What triggers are you using?
You didn't tell us what you are holding in your hand to trigger the camera/flash?
