  • All clips shot at Kildare except the first three which were shot at Portarlington. All photographed over roughly a five-hour period on the afternoon of Thursday 27/06/2019 and all clips are in chronological order. The camera used was a Panasonic Lumix G9 with a 14-140 lens (28-280 mm. equivalent). The weather was bright and sunny and moderately warm, with a breeze blowing. The wind is audible in the soundtrack at times.
I haven’t used the camera much for videos so I didn’t realise that it has a tendency to overexpose bright sunlit scenes. With hindsight, this can be easily rectified by dialing down the exposure compensation setting. I had to edit many scenes by reducing the exposure and contrast. This worked to a large extent but in some cases it reduced the overall quality of the image.
Some may find this video boring because it includes a lot of Hyundai Rotem ICR DMUs. Like it or not, these are part of the scene today. There are a number of loco-hauled up and down Cork expresses. A down container train can be seen at Portarlington, and two timber trains arrive and depart Kildare, one empty and one loaded. An up container train passes Kildare on the platform loop.

Thanks for your comments. Here in Ireland we don't have a great variety of trains and liveries compared to the U.K. or other European countries. Some lines do not have any freight trains at all. The population of the whole island is around 6.5 million.

I think Portarlington is used by customers to transfer to other trains when they want to travel further. I am not a regular visitor to the station but I would imagine there would be some local people and commuters using the trains also. As you can see from the videos of the stopping trains at Kildare, a fair few people come and go. There seems to be a trickle of customers all the time. I left the station just before the evening rush, so I missed that. I imagine it's busy between 17.30 and 19.30. Probably the same in the morning.
