Harry Callahan was one of the great, influential photographers of the twentieth century.
Born in Detroit, he first worked as a clerk for the Chrysler corporation where he met his wife and most famous subject, Eleanor.
Having several associations with photographic luminaries Ansel Adams and Alfred Stieglitz, Callahan went on to have a very prolific career of personal work that was influential and important as an American photographer.
Totally heard you saying WTF! Haha :D I'll give you a thumbs up for that.
This channel is pure gold!
Thanks Ted for continuing to work on videos for everyone. We really appreciate them.
Thanks for doing an episode on this guy! I've seen his "Chicago" piece (of the man and woman walking in opposite directions) a long time ago in a museum and that picture has always stayed with me.
I'm really grateful for your work with this channel Ted. I've learned a lot about photography. Thank you!
Thank you so much Ted for that episode, it really inspired me to pick up my camera again! I've been watching every episode of your show and I can only say, keep up the great work.
terrific! thank you - your enthusiasm is contagious.... a great introduction to Callaghan's work
I loved his "Eleanor" photographs--a lot of years with a lot of love... Thanks for bringing Harry back!
@15:22 oh my god I live right by that warehouse in Chicago... crazy to see how things change.
Thank you Ted for the magnificent work and thank you for your time. You are awesome!.
I've always been a fan of Callahan so great to learn about him in more depth, very insightful and interesting video thanks!
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on one of my favorites, Ted. My wife and I had the pleasure of seeing a Callahan + Aaron Siskind exhibit in our city. My wife, who I wouldn't describe as being "into" photography, was moved by Callahan's images.
thank you, Ted!
patiently waiting for Alfred Stieglitz, and your view about his work :-) !
Gorgeous photos. Thank you, Ted
Very inspiring artist as is your style of introducing and exploring his work. Just love the series. You present with thoughtful, thorough, intelligence and aesthetic candor and reverence for the myriad factors effecting the art and heart of great work. Gratitude
Your videos make me so happy. Thank you
Best. Channel. On UA-cam. Thank you TF!
My favorite episode so far. His images seem to be moving!

Thank you! Great episode.
Super great episode Ted!!!!!!
Fantastic Video. Very inspiring. Thank you.
Love the pictorialist photos of his wife !!
Amazingly artful work, I love it!
Really interesting episode! have not heard of him before, thx! :)
The picture of the parking lot in snow from above is NOT a Callahan image, but a Lazlo Moholy-Nagy image.
learned so much!!
thank you
Just brilliant series. Rally useful
Love your videos and to find this gem with a random wtf is hilarious 😂❤️
Thx again Ted
Good to see an episode on Callahan. He is sadly not as famous as others of his generation. One of the photographers I know here in Atlanta was a student of his from the Rhode Island days. Interesting to hear various stories and stuff about him. Recently I learned whenever he got stuck in his work, he would start shooting 'doubles' (double exposures) to break the routine. He certainly took the idea to another level. Funny to think, he might have been in an creative rut when doing them.
awesome episode
Ted, I enjoy the discussions on who is who in photography and especially getting into the weeds with the lesser known artists.
Interesting! I've enjoyed watching this episode.
Was not aware of this guy before watching this. Thank you. It's a shame in a way that creatively the techniques he used are now almost redundant as people would do this in post prod. Doing this in camera with film would have been so ground breaking at the time.
Thank you
I don’t know if I heard incorrectly, but I’m pretty sure I heard him breathe “fuck” when he was trying to remember the name of Escher haha I love it.
hey ted, can you put up a new intro song like what it used to be? it sounded really cool. i usually get amped and giddy hearing that. great show by the way, you've given so much to the community.
Thanks, Ted. I've never heard of Harry Callahan and I'm happy to say now I do.
Excellent episode. I understand the idea of not getting caught up in the gear but what if you're an avid photographer who wants to move up from the Rebel genre in order to get better overall images. What would you suggest? my interest is street photography and portraits.
Thanks
Hey Ted,
There is a DirtyHarry photographer too. He posts to Flickr HCSP a lot.
Recently named one of the top100 street shooters from a website that was exactly as forgettable as you might expect.
Cheers for your channel - I really enjoy TAOP.
;-)
I like Dirty Harry .. and Daniel Arnold, Gareth Bragdon
awesome 😀
Hi Ted, I was wondering if you have any tips on his actual technique (for a total beginner like myself)? His photos seem to often be very high contrast - is that something done by pushing film, or brought out in the dark room do you think? Thanks!
best use of Pinterest I've ever seen.
In my opinion re photography , “there are only so-many ways you can draw a circle”
"cubism and uh... DEEPER PIXELS"
How come you never did a show on his friend Arron Siskind?
