Fast forward to 9:00 to see the 'repair'. The first 9 minutes is a wonderful story by a helpful man sipping whiskey but gives no repair action. Thanks for the repair video. Short answer: heat up the graphics chip 'till the chip re-seats itself on the graphics board, reinstall and move forward. (This is actually a common problem for balled GPU chips on any modern logic board, PC or Mac, usually caused by over heating and poor heat sink assembly). A reball is the best repair and more permanent but this trick will get you by for awhile.

This works! I just baked my 2011 27" iMac's AMD 6970m GPU and it works again. I simply followed examples shown in several of the youtube videos (I used oven bake). I have never done anything like this before. This was the first time I opened up my iMac. While it seems intimidating at first, I did it. The hardest part was reconnecting the power cables behind the Logic Board and from the LCD panel to Logic Board. I put a sequential numbered piece of electrical tape on all of the wires and it went together smoothly. Baked at 400F for 10 minutes. Took about 3 hours to fix, because I took my time (first timer). My thanks go to all of the UA-camrs who filmed the process and also to those users who posted their encouraging success stories too.

This bloody worked. Just fixed iMac mid 2011. Thank you sir. You are an absolute legend!! Hats off....
Ps a heat gun or a gas solder iron without a tip works a charm. I used a gas soldering iron without the tip. Gradual heat and increase it ever 30 seconds for about 3 mins works

Thanks Alan! This is John from Hong Kong :D
I just did what you did to the imac 27(2009) last night! ... and... it WORKS!! :)
I specifically wanted to thank you because:
    1. You kind of give me confidence psychologically because your video was like "If Yan can cook and so can you!" style. You look like a casual user & repairer rather than some high-tech geek in the other videos. Contrary to other comments i really enjoy your"drinking" screen time. It really got me on the "frustration mood" with a dead iMac in my hands.
    2. I was actually struggling between the "Oven method" vs "Torch method". You've got the point that it was precisely the "main chip" the problem lies in. So surgically heating the chip rather than baking the whole board should be the way to go!... And your "first torch imac" seems lasting very long. (more than 2 years??)
Other baking examples seems lasting only a few months to 1.5 years.
    3. You video has good close-up on your torch action, which i can imitate your firing distance, hand movement, gesture, and time. I know it's kind of risky with this method because more variables involved such as temperature/time/individual technique... But your video show it very clearly.
By the way. for other people's references:
I did fire a shorter period of time, (approx just 1 minute with fast circular torch motion)
I also keep my torch fire a little further from the chip than your video shown. My rationale was: "If i did not enough, i can always do a second time, but if i over-done it, i cannot undo it!"
    Cheers!! :D

thanks for that ....your brave to have a go...so much to break when taking it apart but i keep saying, the price of a new board is stupid money which will probably mean buying a new computer but if you can fix your computer as you have then you have saved yourself money and time to think about replacing your computer..cheers

Mate, you saved me. After doing the same you did in the video, trying all the "recovery options", startups with command key etc... I Randomly reached your video. The video itself its great with the "dutch courage" and all that. But solving it doing a reflow on the graphics chip, i would never thought of that given that it showed picture during the startup.
Thank you again. Keep up the good work. Martín from Menorca

I tried this approach on my brothers 2009 20 inch imac. I used a hot air gun at 200 degrees for eight minutes on the VGA chip. Fresh thermal paste, imac fired up first time perfectly repaired. In retrospect I could of added some glue to the board as its the combination of heat and gravity that causes the VGA solder balls to pull away slightly.

started watching this video thinking. this was going to be another bust. but happily i was wrong. ive watched plenty of videos on how to fix the WSOD none of the suggested fixes worked. i think i even tried the PRAM fix once before but mebbe i hadnt held the buttons properly. so i tried it again and made sure to hold them all down flat while waiting for the chime then the second chime. then let go and voila. my macbook booted up for the first time in months. mine is an older macbook. i thought that was the reason some of the fixes wouldnt work. but obviously not.
anyway thanks man. im delighted to have my mac back up and running again. many thanks.

as you were finishing pasting, I was wishing you would lift the heat sink back off and use q-tips with alcohol, to clean off all the paste which squished out from the chip surface. The heat transfer will be much better without the paste insulating the board around the crystal itself. I am not sure the lead free solder the factory uses, smells like solder or not. I was also wishing you had placed flux all around the substrate of the whole chip where the balls are located. Flux will help the solder balls to flow better. Just use alcohol swabs to clean the graphics board of the flux after.

    • @alan4x

hi, yes almost one year after the repair it broke again.
i took it apart again and reheated the graphics card chip for the second time and it is going good again.
the problem is these graphics chips... AMD Radeon HD 6970M ...were a problem from new and were failing when these computers were still under warranty. they cost a fortune so i will keep heating it until it is totally dead. i hope yours works out well without costing the earth, good luck.

I try all solution. Safe mode, Recovery, Reinstall OS,Re install Old OS, Install Windows... Went through million solutions and forms to make it work
Only reflow GPU card solution work.Open Imac take out graphic card,Clean & wash properly all thermal paste, Heat Oven 200 C. Keep GPU card on small Aluminium balls, Keep in oven for 10 minute. Let it cool for 30 minute, Get new thermal paste not conducting electric type apply small amount on GPU & all other black component jut like doing painting . Do not apply thick layer.
Just enough to cover. Like paint on wall. Tight all screws properly firm & reinstall card. It works 1000%. I have wasted many week & spend lot of money.

My 27” 2011 3.4ghz same AMD GPU, just did something similar to this today😔. The screen started breaking up as a video was playing and then it froze. I held the power button until it shut down and restarted to the white screen, which then turned black while the machine could be heard running.
Fast forward an hour, I’m logged in and everything is normal until I try and play a video, which then causes my screen to start breaking up and then freeze. It seems like a lighter version of the same problem in this video since I can still log in at this point.
So are you just remelting the solder when you heat it with a torch? I’m a little nervous about trying this but it if it has worked twice for you, then why not. Thank you for posting this video!

the computer is great, i use it a lot for quite intense video editing and it is fine but i know it is a matter of time before it fails again.....problem is a new graphics card will cost more than the computer so now in 2018 unless you fancy a possible repair from time to time it would be best to get a newer computer

Only difference with yours is that when i restart it, it ends up in a boot loop, iMac constantly reboots by itself. One of the worst 'how to' videos on youtube. Talking and drinking for 9 minutes, only to cut to a close up of WHAT -- soldering some chip -- why? -- who knows, and then putting some "paste" on it.
