Our project cost about $50usd for the board but it was super low quality hence the troubles we had. Also no support or documentation. You get what you pay for, I guess. 🤷♂️
I did this with my 5K iMac recently. A lot more profanity involved than pictured here (but I didn't assemble the thing when it was plugged in and live, that was an interesting choice 😂)
Bahahaha yeah the whole unplugging thing seems to be really important. I can’t imagine doing this with a 5k. Those are such gorgeous iMacs! Was it dead?
@@CanadianComputerCollector The 5K screen is still gorgeous by modern standards (even compared to Apple's $1700 Studio Display) but the computer was from 2015 and blown away by anything newer, Apple Silicon especially but even newer Intel Macs, it was so imbalanced. Came to the conclusion that it's more useful as a simple monitor.
@@TimurTripp2makes sense! What size was yours? I know that for a while there the 27" ones had target display mode, but IIRC they removed it at some point.
@@CanadianComputerCollector They removed it on all the 27" 5K models. Feels like a terrible waste to have an outdated and slow (by modern standards) computer inside a screen that still looks amazing.
Given all the problems we had with it, I would be hesitant to recommend it. The best way to find the correct board for your needs is to find the part number on the panel and look for a board that is compatible with that panel. I wish you the best of luck if you're doing a similar project!
Hate to admit this but my first Apple Macintosh was the original 1984 unit. My father bought it so we wouldn't be left behind on the road to nowhere..... I am now 65 and Australian and retired and also a former Apple employee and Apple developer. Guess what Apple desktop product was most proud of? The G4 Cube? Nope. It was in actual fact the first G4 iMac all in one with it's LCD panel and the gorgeous polished stainless arm/gimbal assembly. Ask how I know? Cheers young lad.
The G4 iMac is one to be proud of if that’s what you’re implying. What an iconic machine. I remember the ads vividly from when they came out. They were fare too expensive for our household but now I have four! Lol
@@CanadianComputerCollector Jobs is on record as being so excited about this iMac above any other Macintosh since the first Mac in 1984. I have several. I LOVE them!
Maybe not wealth, but you boys are rich in laughter and farts!! ❤
You don't even understand how many farts -Stac
I have a spare Imac from high school days I always wanted to do sk as I really liked the display quality of the Imac.
It's really quite simple so long as you don't get any DOA parts like I did. Give it a shot!
@@CanadianComputerCollector gonna do it this weekend.
Great Video I will have to try that and yes those power supply due hurt
Dan, surprisingly, left out the part where our friend soldered a live wire (it was a BIG pop) -Stac
That will leave a mark@@CanadianComputerCollector
Clicked for the iMacs being turned into external displays, subbed for the pot pie ❤
You are a gem… much like Andrew WK. welcome to the fold mlord.
Awesome show guys! Fun and instructable at the same time.
Thanks for the kind words! Hope to see you in the comments section in future videos 😁
Over 3k subscribers and under 300 views, more than 24 hours ago, thats weird
Agreed. That algorithm is going to send me to an early grave.
7 months later and it's at 6500 views. Slow burn, I guess?
If you have a 2011 iMac 27", you might want to check out Juicy Crumb's Docklite project, not cheap though
Ooh I see @branchuscreations did a video on it!
Also you weren't kidding - $400 for a board, that just isn't worth it 😔
@@CanadianComputerCollector Yup, I was kinda giddy when I saw this until I saw the price

Hi, would you please share the product link on Aliexpress for the video board you bought.

how much was the board?
Around $45usd
every all in one pcs should have this builtin they will slow down this keeps them form becoming e waste nice job
They built it in to the 27"s but not the 24" models. I agree, this just makes sense and it's too nice a display to just throw away.
It’s good to see someone finally found a way to make an Apple product useful. 😊
lol be nice...

okay so basically just take it to a computer repair -_-
I don't think this type of project would make sense to pay someone to do
