This was the real Grand Final, if not one of the best games of the year, if not the decade. The fact that Collingwood got so close, even though they were given no chance, was incredible.
@@Dazzalinco1 and that game turned out to be a PR disaster. Geelong smashed Port Adelaide by 119 points, an biggest AFL Grand final victory to this day
@@screamindom33 yeah, Geelong went on to win 2009, 2011 and 2022 prmerships while Port entered a dark age from 2008-2012 but although recovered but never made it back in since.
Ablett's goal proved very crucial. These teams would meet in the preliminary finals of 2009 and 2010 with Collingwood finally winning against Geelong in 2010 PF. But Geelong avenged that defeat in the 2011 GF. Was a good rivalry. Geelong destroyed Collingwood in the 2020 semi.
i was at this game, it was absolutely devastating. all we needed was one clearance and we could have had a shot at the granny! still great match though.
I too was at this game. Cracked my patella on the Monday, & and had row ZZ top level tickets, level 4. Had to hobble up all the stairs with crutches, sat next to Pies fans giving me shit all game "is the lid still on now?", "nice leg" etc. When Ablett kicked that goal I swear he was pointing at us. Pies fans silenced, me wielding my crutch like a Viking sword, the best.
Its hard to say what happened here, A Lot of good supporters I know agree this was more the grand final we should of gotten but to be I'm not so sure. I mean I love the Magpies and will always support them but they weren't the best team, shit they weren't even in the top 4 best teams. They just had what no other team had which debunked Geelong, Desperation. Younger players with larger tanks and lets be honest Buckly's last game had something to do with their motivation. No other team in the final 8 had anything like this except Geelong. Geelong had 2 miserable finals years behind them as motivation to do better, almost like how Port did in 02 & 03. And if this was the grand final nobody would of rated the cats as highly as we do. That belting to Port was historic.
Clock goes from 1:17 to 1:11 in the 4th without the play restarting. Umpire blew whistle for time on, then again for time off after he realised Rocca wasn't taking the kick. 6 more seconds on the clock would have given Pies a chance at that last ball up. (19:32 mins into this video)
Could someone tell me if there were any other cases where the grand final of a particular season didn't have the highest attendance? This match had 98,002 spectators, the grand final the following week had 97,302 people. Incredible.
I remember forgetting all about this game and sitting at my friends house "Oh dude the cats game!!" we run over to the tv, turn it on and see the final score.....wow
There's no other game on earth ... cricket you say? ... well, it has its moments. Go Pies, can hardly wait for 2010. I'm the kinda prick who wouldn't have minded if the Saints had won by a point. Don't kick me, I'm very fragile. Thanks.
Jesus H Christ watching this after all these years, that was still holding the ball from Stokes and still holding the ball from Bartel, both un-called by the umps in the last 30 seconds. Not a Collingwood supporter, but fuck this was total highway robbery.
It's incredible that 15 years on, Selwood and Pendlebury are still playing finals against each other for the same clubs.

Although Collingwood lost what an amazing game that was, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time!
This was the true grand final, not that bullshit that followed the next week.
That's right mate, Port had an easy run and were obviously not even closely as competitive as Collingwood against Geelong .
The sad thing about the crowd here is that it was a bigger crowd than the grand final that year.
SO?
Not surprising consider port isn't that old.

Another great final this year aswell
*_Pies exposed Geelong in 2019 and the Cats gave the pies a taste of their own medicine in 2022._*
Not sure if reading a UA-cam comment, or a magazine trying to sell what is a good rivalry.

It all paid off 3 years later.

Joel Corey: 31 possessions, 4 marks, 8 tackles in his 150th. Last games for Nathan Buckley, James Clement.

2004 maybe? Only 70,000 attended the GF.
Reduced capacity though.
Maybe 1991? Not 100% though.
Sure miss the good old days, when the Cats were on fire!
doing great so far this season at least

This game is similar to the 2012 Prelim with Hawthorn and Adelaide
anyone have the full match of this
Imagine Geelong actually played good that night
Gary ablett jr. Son of god.
I think that was the game where Dane swan became well known
Paul Medhurst was a gun !!!
Last should been holding the ball
Go The Cats
If josh fraser played we would have won
If Josh Fraser had of played Collingwood would have won this match.
Alan Didak ... and I mean that sinserely ...
Did I mean sincerely ... yes ... Over & out.
Duckwood got so man high free kicks it's a disgrace

***** Yeah but I wasn't playing that day.Apart from that, I really enjoy all your AFL comments because they are so funny and mature.
***** That might be because they're the only team to win four flags in a row ... just guessing. Cheers.

The Stokes’ holding the ball was there. He had prior. Bartel didn’t have prior (so I get that). It still hurts but one day I’ll move on 😂
shouldve been the gf
