Fun fact: that building to your right that says "Hotel Cecil" at the end of the video is notorious for having extremely dark history as well as being the past residences of some of the most evil people in history. Richard Ramirez AKA the Night Stalker and Jack Unterweger who were both savage serial killers. The Black Dahlia also stayed there, and the tragic death of Elisa Lam also took place there.
@@blablablaj Yup! It's actually one of my dreams to visit that hotel on the inside. Although the hotel rooms themselves look hideous, the lobby is beautiful and the sign outside is iconic because of U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" video. But I just get chills when I know that Richard Ramirez carried out most of his petrifying crimes while staying there, and even used to dump his blood-stained clothes out in the dumpster outside and would walk barefoot and naked back to his room through the back stairs.

This summer was my first time to ever go to California. I of course visited Los Angeles. I have never seen such high buildings before, but there was a huge presence of homeless people there. :(
Thank you for doing this AK. I left my home on the Upper West Side years ago to come to LA and work in film. I never liked this city but there were things to like about it. Now a lot of what was really great about it is gone and watching the homeless problem grow under the Garcetti administration has been horrifying. People should know what a hell hole LA has turned into while others get more and more wealthy and what you show in this video is only part of it, this is all over the city.
You're right about that! I grew up in L.A.,was born here,as a matter of fact, and I don't blame homeless people for what has happened. I'm old enough to remember when there was no homeless people ( generally) because rents were both so abundant and cheap !! I thought it would always be that way, because after all, this was an American city. I believed the hype ! Not well known, is how apartments stopped getting built anymore, by the year 1980. Only commercial buildings went up, unless it was luxury apartments. And often, apartments got converted into condos ( Ellis Act1985). People poured in,still do, but no housing was created to keep up with all the new arrivals ! So of course, now there's a permanent housing shortage. A massive building campaign will cure it( homelessness) but there's money to be made, in the Homeless Industrial Complex. Just Google " profiting off the homeless," and do your own research. You'll see.
I used to think that LA was a glamorous sort of paradise city indeed but it looks like the streets of Mumbai. It mustn’t be easy to live around that sort of third worldly inequality either.
AK, I applaud and thank you for your bravery by riding your e-scooter to show us Skid Row. There's been a homeless population there for years, but the pandemic made it worse. 😿 Hope the situation will get better. 🙏

So sad and depressing , I’ve heard other states also have this problem , not sure what the solution is since there are many issues to address , I appreciate you showing us the down side of LA , be safe my friend xoxo
THANK YOU for not driving on the sidewalk!!! When rental scooters were set loose on the area a few years ago, my well being as a pedestrian went down for the first time since moving downtown ten years ago.
I worked at San Pedro and 6th thru most of the 90s. Back then "skid row" was mostly on San Pedro near the Weingart Ctr and LA Mission. It has spread out A LOT since then. Interesting fact I learned from a homeless person... Central Ave rarely has homeless because the big trucks use it to traverse DTLA at all hours and they couldn't sleep. It really is very sad out there. :(
We have the same issue in Edmonton, which is sad to see. There are homeless people who live in tents, in city parks, or in other places they can find shelter. More needs to be done to help deal with the homeless issue. This is a real eye opening video. Cheers!
@@ActionKid See "Invisible People" a Vlogger...he should be the person to ask and appoint becoz there is now a "homelessness industry" which can be self -serving due to funding programs and organizations that clearly can't have a long lasting impact and problem solve!
Incredible. That's the part of LA you don't see advertised. The potential there is phenomenal. Yet wasted, due to lack of investment. A vast labour force exists there, yet pushed into poverty. Governments only have themselves to blame. All of it could and can be avoided. Education is the key. What you've shown, is the American dream vs Reality. Reality needs promoting, not a dream.

I have absolutely no use for an electric scooter. But when I see your Ninebot Max, I have to have one. :) Keep up the good work. You are establishing invaluable libraries of NY and LA life.
@Brina Lee Everyone is responsible for him/herself; no one owes anybody anything. The real shame is that too many folk out here think that the world owes them something. One man can't solve the problems of the world -- So let God take care of that. Each of us do what we can in our own way. Now perhaps if we commanded our elected officials to lobby for legislation to address this issue, rather than supporting politicians who dance to the tunes of "their" corporate sponsors, many would be far less homeless.
The problem is simple. Rents are sky high. Nobody can afford an apartment. Buy a house? Do you have an extra 2 million dollars in the bank? I am 70 years old and disabled. My only income is Social Security. After I pay Medicare, I get $1000 a month. How do you stretch that into a place to live anywhere in California? Thank God I was able to relocate where I bought a home and live comfortably but had I stayed, I would definitely be on the street.
I just moved to LA. At first I was like it’s bad but it’s not that bad. Till literally last night I kinda got lost near East downtown and it was about 1 am. My goodness I wasn’t afraid but it looked like Haiti meets downtown hollywood. It’s REALLY BAD in certain areas and not so bad in others. It reminds me of one of the plagues in the Bible when it hails and fire rains. It’s like 2 extremes that shouldn’t happen together but here we are. The city is broken.
were any of you there in the early 90s? I worked downtown. The whole area nearby, not just Skid Row, was way scarier than this. It is named skid row for a reason. My band had gigs at Al's Bar (a clothing store today)-- and turned them down as too much crime to unload your gear. Much better today. not dismissing the point here-- it's clearly bad, but not the first time the area was ugly.

A few thoughts; first one is that you're a brave man AK and also lucky you hit a lot of green lights. Second is that being on your scooter you weren't able to show the insane amounts of human excrement and hypodermic needles everywhere. Lastly, while there are many more people on skid row now than in the past, it wasn't long ago that these people were literally living in cardboard boxes rather than tents. This country needs to do something about this and I don't know what it is but down here in San Diego is the same thing. East village, the Gaslamp, all along the freeway, everywhere it's homeless people living in tents. We're heading for some dystopian society faster than anyone realizes.
Hopefully not everyone sees homeless people as bad people,as someone who works with them I'm appalled at how they are treated. Sidenote : @action kid Ken, great to see you exploring more than New York , keep up the great work 🙏
Watch the video about skid row from RNK All Day. There are some good in depth looks to get a better prospective. Every city seems to have a version of "Skid Row". Sadly this is all over in DTLA, in front of many buildings and parking structures, all the way into the valley.
props for doing this. I can't imagine what you saw, heard, smelled, and touched there. Skid row is literally hell on earth. Growing up in SoCal, i know this place is legendary for the utter inhumane conditions there. It's an underground city where they cannibalize each other to levels you can't imagine. I'm surprised nobody noticed you filming because many people try to do this and they start noticing.
Fascinating to see this area. You handled it respectfully. It's a bit of a difficult subject to address without exploiting people. Not a simple problem and no simple answers. -H
Many years ago the Bowery in NYC was skid row, too. Only there were no tents. People just slept out in the open on the sidewalks...mostly drug addicts and alcoholics. They didn't have the luxury of mild L.A. weather and set up cardboard boxes in the winter. It was sad then and the city still has a huge homeless population many who are mentally ill and can't find a solution to their problems. Very sad, indeed.
Very important video. People spend money going into space for no particular reason, while our fellow humans sleep on the streets due to inability to take care of themselves. Thank you for the video...

That’s crazy. As a NY’er I just know our communities wouldn’t let that fly. Deblasio kicked the homeless out of hotels and they were hidden. Insanity out there in Cali
The city of Los Angeles offers many many many resources to these people. Along with churches and private companies come to offer toilets, housing (hotels turned into housing, small tiny house neighborhoods for homeless, homeless shelters) daily food drop off, cleanups, haircuts, bathrooms, showers. You see the city workers with the vests as he rides through. Most of the remainder of the homeless you see are the mentally ill and drug addicted. In order for them to enter the free housing they need to abide by the rules of no drug use and alcohol and no shenanigans. So unfortunately most of these people do not want to live by these rules and they do not want the help. Which makes it a drug and mental health issue. You cannot help people who do not want help. Also people with these issue come from all around the US to live on our streets because of the wether and lack of law enforcement enforcing rules. They can do whatever they want here with no consequences. Where do you think they all got tents and tarps from? Local city hand outs and churches to keep Dry. The hand outs are endless
No that won't fix it although it would help. Lots of drugs involved and once they're hooked, that's it. You also can't place them all in the same housing either or it just becomes a center for drug dealers to push their product.
@@eddiew2325 Easier to build multi family housing imo. But not easy in many US cities because of zoning restrictions and NIMBYs not wanting density and affordable housing. Also local governments catering to the single family housing majority
@@krisat16 you should do some more research. They tried that in Chicago. Failed disaster. It was basically free housing for gangbangers, drug peddlers, and those buildings became dangerous. I live in San Francisco and I personally deal with this everyday. I’ve always come up with the same plan…move all the homeless to open land outside the city and in that open land build a homeless center with drug rehab, job training and daycare/pet care. Of course city is against it because the city pays millions in useless homeless centers that do nothing but give out drugs and alcohol, homeless advocates are against it because they believe they deserve better (well I have almost been homeless many times but my drive to make money has kept a roof over my head) while at the same time when I tell those advocates that why don’t they let the homeless live with them then I get a very dirty look and of course Daly City is against it since it will relocate thousands of homeless close to their border with SF.
There are homeless people everywhere,I live in the Florida keys and we have them living in tracks of hardwood hammocks. They are just not as visible as the cities.
Seeing all those homeless people makes me so thankful that I have a roof over my head and enough food to eat. How can I complain about anything.

Wow so that's the famous hotel!
I've seen a video about how in this exact hotel 100 people died
@@blablablaj Yup! It's actually one of my dreams to visit that hotel on the inside. Although the hotel rooms themselves look hideous, the lobby is beautiful and the sign outside is iconic because of U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" video. But yeah there's no denying that hotel has seen some stuff. I think the most tragic is Elisa Lam, it's a shame what happened to her. But I just get chills when I know that Richard Ramirez carried out most of his petrifying crimes while staying there, and even used to dump his blood-stained clothes out in the dumpster outside and would walk barefoot and naked back to his room through the back stairs.
@@keezoftw1175 i live in the opposite building. The only thing that you should be worried about are the crazy drug addicts downstairs not the actual ghosts in the hotel.

Thanks as usual for the respectful tour AK. I have no words, no answers.

Lockdowns. Not the pandemic
As a foreigner that watched many American films I would of never imagine this level of homme less ness existed. Hollywood is very good at promoting the US as Z dream land.

It’s not Skid “Row” anymore! The homeless have spilled into other parts of LA County! 😭😢

We have the same issue in Edmonton, which is sad to see. There are homeless people who live in tents, in city parks, or in other places they can find shelter. More needs to be done to help deal with the homeless issue. This is a real eye opening video. Cheers!

Perhaps you can meet up with German in Venice, he knows very much about progress and policies being made to end this.
@@DamienYuen7718 you have to dig deep and try to understand the life dynamic.( Seek to understand , instead of judging Damien)
Check this example, a person have a good life, but suddenly his or her partner dies and there is not much money for the mortgage , the bank tells them to move and suddenly you're living in a tent.
Another one, you go to college and after you land a job at Apple or Google, due to the housing crisis in the bay Area , you end living in camper.

I have absolutely no use for an electric scooter. But when I see your Ninebot Max, I have to have one. :) Keep up the good work. You are establishing invaluable libraries of NY and LA life.
The scooter is very convenient to have!
@Brina Lee Everyone is responsible for him/herself; no one owes anybody anything. The real shame is that too many folk out here think that the world owes them something. One man can't solve the problems of the world -- So let God take care of that. Each of us do what we can in our own way.
Now perhaps if we commanded our elected officials to lobby for legislation to address this issue, rather than supporting politicians who dance to the tunes of "their" corporate sponsors, many would be far less homeless.

are you really a princess?
The problem is simple. Rents are sky high. Nobody can afford an apartment. Buy a house? Do you have an extra 2 million dollars in the bank? I am 70 years old and disabled. My only income is Social Security. After I pay Medicare, I get $1000 a month. How do you stretch that into a place to live anywhere in California? Thank God I was able to relocate where I bought a home and live comfortably but had I stayed, I would definitely be on the street.
I am starting to believe this is all done by design.

Watch the video about skid row from RNK All Day. There are some good in depth looks to get a better prospective. Every city seems to have a version of "Skid Row". Sadly this is all over in DTLA, in front of many buildings and parking structures, all the way into the valley.

Many years ago the Bowery in NYC was skid row, too. Only there were no tents. People just slept out in the open on the sidewalks...mostly drug addicts and alcoholics.
