Being a Filipino, i've gotten quite used to seeing homeless people on the streets but seeing them in large numbers for the first time in an affluent and world renowned American city like L.A. is quite shocking. Makes me realize how lucky i am for having my own home in my 3rd world country, no matter how humble it is.
La doesn’t represent all of America. California is home to more than half of the homeless population in the entire United States. La has a bad homeless problem because of its high cost of living
I am. All 50 states have a homeless problem. I am from Tennessee, It's here also, and it's all because of the rent is so high, the electric and all of the utilities are out radious in every city across America. People who draw a check from the government cannot pay rent because they only get about $790.00 a month. Either live with someone or go homeless, no. way around it. Then they will not give out section8 Government Housing, a waiting lottery and if they have a police record. They are out period of help. It is awful because people can change and do better but what do they do if a place is not left to them. Go Homeless . It's the new normal til the government changes it. I pray that I don't haft to live that way and been blessed. But we will never know it till it happens to us..
@@ch-ir8ld yes. Most have mental issues or are addicts. They don’t have to pay rent or any other bills. They’re free to get their fix or whatever all day long. Panhandle every now n then. Tax free money. They can makes like $300-400 a day. Imagine that? Being in LA for free. Or even living on the beach for free. Never have to leave and do all the drugs they want. That’s why they don’t go to shelters. Too many rules. No drugs, sex or alcohol. Outside, they’re free.
@@ch-ir8ld they do. And I hate LA. Mainly for that. A lot get shipped to Bakersfield also, and you talk to them here sometimes. It’s crazy how they think. I'm so thankful that my landlords are renting me a place to live in at a reasonable rate . Inflation is uncomfortable but i'm thankful that my job pays for my life.
You are lucky because rents are going up everywhere . Rent prices rose by 0.8% in june from a month earlier, according to the labor department it is the largest monthly gain since 1986.
How can the typical family with average income afford a higher rate+ more expensive home? in my area multi generational home is becoming the norm . Don’t forget to add the inflation which just this week was 9.1 on the CPI , producers index 11.3, it’s going to be a rough ride for sure.
Time will tell how this period will treat people that never save, invest, lived beyond means, paycheck to paycheck, too many kids, too big of home, keeping up with the joneses with FOMO,YOLO, paying alimony, child support, etc
Theres reportedly 41290 homeless in la, 28862 unsheltered. $1b = $34659 per unsheltered homeless person in la. That could go torward putting that unsheltered homeless person in a transitional tiny home village with a shared bathroom and kitchen. They would get to live in a tiny home bedroom with heating and cooling and electricity, but the village would share a bathroom and kitchen. They could use some land to grow their own food in the village, and they should be helped getting a job and if needed job training. $2b would provide $69318 per unsheltered homeless person in la. That could be used to go torward putting them in a transitional tiny home that includes a bathroom and kitchen per tiny home. Convince gov to let everyone use an acre of free tax free fertile land to grow a food forest on and live on. End farm subsidies. End tax breaks to farms exsept those who grow healthy vegan food for human consumption exsept no large mono crops. End mandatory school, ged and hsd requirements, age limits, minimum wage, and exsessive regs. In Tampa there is 20'000 evictions going to court starting january so figure thats 40'000 plus people and half of them will end up on the streets witch are already flooded with homeless
You do realize those moratoriums on evictions actually made the evictions worse. If the moratoriums didn't exist, most good renters could have probably renegotiated their rent due to hardship. Most landlords understood that during covid it was unlikely they would find new renters so it was beneficial for them to agree to reduce the price temporarily to keep good renters. Now in the end the rent is paid up, tenants credit is good, still a good relationship between tenant and landlord. The moratorium caused tenants to simply stop paying. Now the tenant is so far behind on rent there is no way they can catch up, they will be evicted for sure, their credit is ruined, it will be hard to find a new place as they have a bad rental history, and the landlord will sue for the money owed. Also, the moratoriums will reduce the number of rentals available. Who would want to own a rental when they know the government can come in and force you to house someone while receiving no money. In Washington the landlord can even be forced to pay for utilities. Put yourself in the landlords shoes. A drop in supply of rental properties will mean and increase in price. Supply and demand. Whenever politicians want to pass some great sounding piece of legislation, make sure you look at it from all perspectives and think about the unintended consequences.

So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .
Hi. I'm sorry that you're going through so much. I would help you if I could. I was in a similar situation as you until just a year ago. I did a little research and found out that Texas is a veteran friendly state with lots of organizations. I wish you well and a blessed year ahead.
It breaks my heart this is how those who served our country are treated. It's not right. There has to be numbers you can call to get the help you need. If you can get to a better state perhaps? I don't have the answers, I wish I did. I will pray for you, I don't know what more I can do.
I am so so very sorry to hear everything that you are going through, I dont get too emotional over posts but yours has really touched me. If you are not having luck with the veterans charities is there something on the civilian side? In the UK we have the citizens advice and they will find out every benefit that you are entitled to and help get them as well as helping with housing charities and local councils, is there an equivalent in the U.S.?
I am so sorry that you're going through all of this. I cannot believe there's nobody that can help you. If you're a veteran they should be helping you. I know Portland Oregon is not much better but my friend has a boutique that works with men and women who are veterans and provides money to help them get set up in an apartment and it seems like where you're at they are not helping you. Can you get on Social Security and then get on Medicaid and find a dentist that can help you with your teeth? You should be able to qualify for glasses also the Lions Club could help with that there's got to be somewhere you can get some help here. We are supposed to be helping our veterans

I used to want to go to LA so bad as a kid. I always thought It looked so cool when shaq and kobe played for the Lakers. After getting hit with a reality check from this video, I wouldn't step foot in LA. This is so sad to see
I was homeless at one point and time. It was my husband, myself, and my dog. We were all living in one car along with all of our backpacks and things we had. But my homelessness wasn't because of drugs, or that I had gotten evicted. Although, with absolutely $0 in our pockets, deciding to leave all the stress away at home, we traveled in a car across the US during a pandemic. I have to say the trip definitely wasn't easy. Being on the streets you'd have to deal with a variety of obstacles: finding changes of clothes, CLEAN socks were such an issue and sometimes you'd have to resort to stealing food... Altogether with not being able to shower up until you panhandled for enough money to get a night's stay at a cheap motel.. It was hard to keep up hygiene, and I myself like to keep very clean when I can. Luckily we weren't without a car, so we were mobile fortunately safer with the whip than out on the street. But having to sleep in a car brought along a whole other set of issues- police, nosy people, and crackheads all at once, so my advice to anyone sleeping in their car right now - park and rides are your best friend. Don't stay at Walmart parking lots. You could either get kicked out or encounter people trying to rob you. Also, try to always carry around pepper spray with you just in case. I remember my husband ended up finding a job up in Sacramento, CA at a restaurant. The employer was so understanding about the situation, but get ready for a rough patch of 2 weeks. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the job. But to all employers - give the homeless a chance. And to all people who might encounter someone asking for spare change - Don't be afraid to give. It could really help someone out, and in most cases that money isn't going directly to drugs or alcohol if its someone who actually wants the help. I am now writing this in my own house with my husband and dog. I have never felt more proud to have my own little spot. But I never forget all those people who helped me get through living in my car. I hope if you are reading this and you are considered homeless, remember to stay strong and don't give in. God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!
I was homeless for a short time years ago but I had a car too. God helped me get a place. I prayed a lot. It was scarey and not fun. To put it mildly. Thank God for God helping me find work and pull up out of that. It was tough. But God is tougher! Me & my little girl. She's grown up now & just got a big promotion where she works. God is good.
I own a used appliance store and we delivered a refrigerator to the owner of a busy taco truck that is down the street from my store. When I tell you their house was DISGUSTING. Mice and roach infested and just straight up dirty. They do all of their cooking in their kitchen at home and then take it to the truck. I since then can not eat from food trucks. Not saying all of them are like that but seeing that one was enough for me.
I have family in the food business, very clean environment, it's all in orange county California, the orange county register has a weekly review of those businesses who were shut down for violations such as roaches and rats . It's not only food trucks . Just this week a older white couple moved in next door to my house , they were unloading a bunch of junk from a uhaul truck , yesterday morning I found a roach in my garage, we've never had a roach or mice problem, it's clearly coming from their side , disgusting! But just because of that I'm not going to think all white people are dirty . Just like your " taco ban " it would be redicules.
"I have succeded and i am content with my job, a new guy will replace me tomorrow. And with that i'm gonna fly away with my multi million dollar golden parachute"

Thank you, the problem is everything is so expensive when it shouldn’t be. We’re in a recession and cost has risen but not pay. We have been told for years that the price of housing would adjust if no one pay the rent but then these apts just sit empty?
Sad thing is most of these people are mentally beyond help, others don’t want the help. Without better local and state leadership this will continue to get worse
Truthfully, as someone who once thought about aspiring psychology, I already knew future homeless clients would be almost impossible to help... its hard to treat them medicinally because the problem is usually the environment, & you cant buzz someone's conscious & expect them to flourish or succeed... & how can a therapist fully empathize or give advice when they've never been in a situation like that? Talking for an hour a week vs. Trying to survive & function day to day is a different experience & it'll only get u so far. They unfortunately need government aid assistance & as a right wing leaner, it hurts me to have to say that...

When I was visiting California some 30 odd years ago I asked the friends I was staying with if we could go check out the CBD, (downtown L.A). Their reply was, "Don't bother, not worth it. It's full of drug addicts and homeless people !" Go figure! All big city problems shine a magnifying glass on humanities problems. To allow the problem to grow this big reekes of entrenched corruption. If I was elected to high office in California, the very first thing I would do would be to sack the public service en masse. Then start rehiring. In a very short time the results would be stunning.
People aren't living on the streets because of the price of housing. They are on the streets because of mental illness and/or drugs. People that make very little will rent a house between multiple families or roommates to split the costs. Ya, if you want your own place you better have a well paying job in LA.

I've seen a few there compared to any parts in this video but the few homeless people in Beverly hills seemed to be fucking crazy and creepy
One time I was waiting for the bus in Beverly hills and this homeless dude kept trying to go behind me and he kept looking at me too I knew what he wanted to do. When I got on the bus he went in there too he wanted to sit next to me but if he did I would just move Haha fuckin weird man

I am. All 50 states have a homeless problem. I am from Tennessee,
It's here also, and it's all because of the rent is so high, the electric and all of the utilities are out radious in every city across America. People who draw a check from the government cannot pay rent because they only get about $790.00
a month. I'm so thankful that my landlords are renting me a place to live in at a reasonable rate . Inflation is uncomfortable but i'm thankful that my job pays for my life.

Thanks for the heads up. Gotta get food.

It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit.
I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck.
Do you have a PayPal or gofundme to donate to?
California is Broken!!!!! I'm a Engineer and Lockheed offered me a job in Palmdale. These videos revealed to me what up. Atlanta, GA looks better and better. However, it's starting to get over crowded too.
I live 15 minutes away from downtown and it’s been 5 years since I’ve been down there and two weeks ago I passed by at night and let me tell you I was so shocked at how downtown looks it’s sad
You never spent real time in DTLA. It has always been that way.
Was just in LA last week, passed by the edge of DTLA and the amount of tents and makeshift homes is absolutely insane.
I used to want to go to LA so bad as a kid. I always thought It looked so cool when shaq and kobe played for the Lakers. After getting hit with a reality check from this video, I wouldn't step foot in LA. This is so sad to see
Lots of empty car parks to build potential buildings
Homeless people please move to Beverly Hills…..Now that would be epic and would guarantee help
God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!
amazing thank you!
Amazing that you are not bitter and sarcastic about your experience, you have a great personality... GOD bless you.
@@kaycoats8344 That's a blessing
Why did you feel like you had to come to a different state?
I own a used appliance store and we delivered a refrigerator to the owner of a busy taco truck that is down the street from my store. When I tell you their house was DISGUSTING. Mice and roach infested and just straight up dirty. They do all of their cooking in their kitchen at home and then take it to the truck. I since then can not eat from food trucks. Not saying all of them are like that but seeing that one was enough for me.
Thank you for the heads up, I’d never ever ever eat from a truck again
I used to be a food inspector and I can say you're very wise for that.
I cook my own food, to many war story’s.
@@joaquinmurieta2276 why are you quoting taco ban like anyone here said that? Lol. Didn’t I already state not all food trucks are like that?
Would love to hear what a Politician representing this district has to say about this.
"I have succeded and i am content with my job, a new guy will replace me tomorrow. And with that i'm gonna fly away with my multi million dollar golden parachute"
That would be very interesting to hear that explanation! My city is unrecognizable I moved 14 years ago who allow this to happen I would love to know .. Still home though 💔
They probably didn't know because sheer gerrymandering
I know this is an old story but the politicians don't care because they have their mansions their arm guard security as long as they don't bother them then they'll let them stay on the streets newsome loves having thousands of people on the street
@@isakjohansson7134 The Democrat politician will state, "My work is done and I am out of here."
Los Angeles developers have high rise apt buildings, but they have sat vacant for years. The city gets tax breaks on them, they just sit unoccupied,
Thank you, the problem is everything is so expensive when it shouldn’t be. We’re in a recession and cost has risen but not pay. We have been told for years that the price of housing would adjust if no one pay the rent but then these apts just sit empty?
Sad thing is most of these people are mentally beyond help, others don’t want the help. Without better local and state leadership this will continue to get worse
Homelessness makes you mentally unstable!!
I guess all this could be avoided if the community tried to help them
Pls give trump a THX becouse he had 4 years to change that but noh
Truthfully, as someone who once thought about aspiring psychology, I already knew future homeless clients would be almost impossible to help... its hard to treat them medicinally because the problem is usually the environment, & you cant buzz someone's conscious & expect them to flourish or succeed... & how can a therapist fully empathize or give advice when they've never been in a situation like that? Talking for an hour a week vs. Trying to survive & function day to day is a different experience & it'll only get u so far. They unfortunately need government aid assistance & as a right wing leaner, it hurts me to have to say that...
@@entary4723 The Politicians in California are responsible for California, I don't live there why should my federal dollars pay for this.
@@JJones-rk6cy because whether you agree or not, your homeless population most likely migrated to California to be homeless there.

If the city of LA is telling you there is 36,000 homeless than you know it’s more like 100,000!
Excellent point.
Yup they even said they haven’t counted in months because of covid. There is definitely more than 36 thousand
Definitely not 100,000 thats too much, i would estimate its more around 45-60 thousand

Los angeles is a great place to be when you need to poo. When I was in London and Tokyo, I had to pay to use the toilets. In Los Angeles I just pooed on the street and was treated like a local :)
Somehow I suspect you just made that up. Don't you think if those people had a place to poo, they'd use it?
When I went to San Francisco you had to put in a few quarters to get into the bathrooms at some places
The best part of LA is you can poop anywhere you want.

Los Angeles is expensive enough as it is
I’m kind of amazed that more people aren’t homeless
@Mr. Paint
That’s because undocumented immigrant family learn to share space with other families to save money.
People aren't living on the streets because of the price of housing. They are on the streets because of mental illness and/or drugs. People that make very little will rent a house between multiple families or roommates to split the costs. Ya, if you want your own place you better have a well paying job in LA.
L.A. is a car-addict city, you can't see a public transport any day. Everyone in L.A. drives.
Soon you won't be able afford a home in Compton.
