  • Should you get the Amaran 60d OR Godox ML60? What about the bi-color options of these 60w lights? This video is my fluff-less answer to these very questions.
    Most folks want to know if Aputure is better than Godox, for most video lights. The truth is, its based on your needs. So hopefully what I cover here is helpful to you.

      Is the Godox ML60 having app control a recent update? I bought mine about a year ago to use as a rim/hair light in my studio setup. I bought the remote separately as I have it mounted 9' up or so and it was a pain to get to to turn on.

      Good point, I forgot to mention that the ML60 I don't think is yet able to be controlled from a remote. Last I checked anyway, which was a few months back. So it might still just be the remote. Not sure if the ones being shipped now have app control or not.

    I'm personally going with the Amaran 60d. Having used the Godox SL60w for the past year as a budget keylight, I think the price point and overall aesthetic of the Amaran fits everything I could ask for, especially if you don't have NP Fz100 batteries and are thinking of purchasing them. Also as a prospect for posterity within the Aputure family it appeases my ocd of having different brands :)

    I was JUST hoping that someone would do this comparison. So much obsessing about Amaran and Aputure that everyone is acting this these are a new concept. I love the Godox light and bought it after seeing your review. This size and form factor AND the proprietary mount make it a clear winner. The Godox softboxes are the most portable ones around thanks to the narrow mount.

    Seems a little silly to fault the aputure for the case when the $100 you save could easily buy any better case you want that fits your particular arrangement of lights. Frankly I'm super happy that amarans dont come with carrying cases since my office was full of useless empty single-light cases that are pointless if you ever carry more than one light since its so much more efficient to carry several lights in a 3-light rolling light case that carrys several lights and modifiers and stands when going on location. Single light cases are only useful for renting out single lights in my opinion since there seem to be almost zero other use cases where carrying one small light in one small case makes sense for an owner/operator transporting their own gear unless you really only own and operate one small light which is rarely the case I find.

    Owning both of these lights and scaling down my workflow to a smaller more portable setup. I have to say price to performance the 60d (not the W as I’ll never need color temperature adjustment and it just doesn’t have enough output) is a fantastic product for not only small and portable setups but proper studio applications. Used wisely you can buy 4-5 and make a very compact, slim and stylistic scene. That’s my 2 cents.

      I like what you say and I like the Amaran COB 60D very much. However, my concern is that shooting video with 5 of these lights may produce too much ambience sound coming from the fans of so many 60D lights. What do you think?
      One or two lights may not be a problem but shooting dialogue with 4 or 5 of these beauties is a concern for audio, right? (And i know that ambient audio could be minimized in post).

    • @RMquickbit
      @RMquickbit Рік тому +1

      @@TelevisionCrews honestly I’ve never picked up audible fan noise from any of these even on full power for hours. The fan’s extremely quiet and my microphones for dialogue are very directional so placed appropriately you’re fine. And with lav mics you really shouldn’t need to crank the gain up if placed right so no issues there. I find the only issues I ever have in interviews or whatever is in office buildings when others are walking throughout shutting doors, talking, random bullshit. I’ve never had an issue with fan noise on any light I’ve owned, blown away (ha) how many people complain about it.
      Anyway you’d probably be better off with a 150w-300w ish keylight with a larger body if you’re worried about noise. Strictly because the heatsink that the led cob light sits on is much much much larger and the frames are also usually built out of some sort of heat sinking material (aluminum) so the bigger lights are basically giant heatsinks and can withstand higher heat without needed to kick the fans on at all or atleast very low.
      The amaran is absolutely tiny, and I tore down one completely, the construction is perfectly fine and quality but it is cheap and the housing is also plastic and as you can imagine the heatsink is very small but it’s a low wattage led.
      Anyway blah blah blah I still grab these over any lights I own if I’m on the go. So small, so easy and I can fit 4 in a relatively small pelican case with super slim stands and yeah it’s just a breeze. Be careful with large modifiers though. Super large softboxes and front heavy modifiers are just a little sketchy on this little baby body. That being said I haven’t broken one yet and used some questionable attachments…
      Good luck man 🤙🏻

    • @superultragiggachigga
      @superultragiggachigga Рік тому +2

      I know this response wasn’t for me, but I greatly appreciate the detail you gave. As someone who is just starting out in filmmaking, I was really worried about the fan noise during dialogue scenes so this helped a lot.
      I guess I will just use the money I’m saving to get a quality Mic, that’s directional. If you don’t mind me asking, what size soft box would you recommend as a maximum? Since it being a plastic body, it makes me wonder how long the Bowen mount will last.

    A good video. One critique I can offer is the portability section. When I do an outdoor shoot I repact everything into more portable cases/backpacks anyway. So a carrycase should not be a deciding factor, in my mind as to portability, rather focus on ease of use. Which one is easier and faster to set up as well as which is more durable for outdoor use. As well as which is lighter and compacter, ie easier to carry around while set up because for outdoor setups you cannot always rely on a light stand, but need an assi or need to even hold it yourself.

    Thanks for the video! Brief, clear while being thorough!
    The big question for me personally is: going daylight and using gels accordingly or bicolour lights?
    More output and less flexibility or less output with flexibility but potentially some colour reproduction errors with time and wear of the electronics/LEDs?
    I'd like to start filming in my home studio some personal product video projects and I don't need to go to clients' places as I don't work as a professional anymore.
    So probably I don't need the extra flexibility and I could get some CTO gels to create split tones effect with just 10-15£.
    My idea is to purchase a 3 light kit to cover a key light, fill and background lighting.
    My choice right now is: Aputure Amaran 200d, 100d (x2) or 200d, 100d and a 60d, all of this are available for immediate delivery.
    Available there are also 200x, 100x although the 60x has a lead time of 4-6 weeks.
    Price difference:
    200d+100d+100d = 704£, 672£ with the 60d instead of one 100d
    200x+100x+100x = 857£, 806£ with a 60x instead of a 100x
    Not sure if the full bicolour set would be a waste of money and if I won't be using the flexibility given by adjustable CCT.
    Any help will be much appreciated! Thank you :)

Where maximum, quality light output for the buck is most important for me, the Amaran light will be my next purchase. Since both fan sound tests were done with a +12 db bump I can't imagine the Amaran is much louder than the Godox. The mounts are a moot point since neither by themselves can use large accessories without some help. The S2 bracket for the Godox and some sort of clamp for the Amaran. Having a built-in Bowens doesn't do much good if it can only handle smaller items hanging off of it. I've seen people complain about having to also bring the S2 but I just leave them attached to the modifiers and all mine fit inside their storage bags with it attached just fine. Since the AD100s and 200s also fit in the S2 it just makes sense to always have it attached to the softbox anyway. I don't think either is right or wrong, just depends what you want. If you have one light the bag of the ML60 is great. But I do want a few Amarans for cheap extra lighting where I don't need complex modifiers and I'll be sticking them all in one big travel bag anyway. Get both!

    Companies that decide to buck a widely-adopted method of attaching accessories by slapping on a proprietary mount and selling you an adaptor always feels like a punch to the gut. The Godox, even being more expensive, seems like a solid winner, but having to buy a separate adapter just to use any modifiers I already have? It's hard for me to see a reason for that choice beyond trying to hoover up more of their customers' money.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  2 роки тому +3

      I can see how you feel. But in this case, it was a move that makes some sense (took me experience to learn this). The light is so small that putting heavy modifiers on it risk damaging the mount or even the light itself. Having the adapter take the weight is smarter because it can handle bigger modifiers without risk of damage.
      I know alot of folks complained to me that they had issues with the Amaran because it can't handle big modifiers.
      So, in the end, $25 isn't all to bad for keeping your light intact! :D
      But I feel ya, most companies do make that move and it seems silly

So thinking of buying 2 or 3 of them. I have been using godox photography lights for many years now (AD200Pro and AD400Pro) and I love them. ( I have a lots of bowens mount modifiers). Compared to photography I am very new to videography. Should I go with Godox SL60 II Bi or Godox ML 60 Bi as my first continuous lights? I will appreciate the help.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  2 роки тому

      Yeah I think so, you have to 'activate' power first. I also noticed that if you use the remote to turn the light off and go to turn it back on with the remote hours later the light will have shut off 'for good' and you'll have to go hit the power button on the light again. Not sure why, but I did notice it.

      For outside, I've found you need a bit to compete with the sun (direct sunlight) I've done a 200w light on an overcast day and it struggled to keep up (with a softbox on it) So, likely need at least 300w 600w is better to compete well with direct sunlight. If you're in the shade then 200-300w is pretty good. You can certainly use a 60w but really only at dusk, dawn, or night scenes. It'll not be so amazing during the rest of the day unless you have it super close with little to no diffusion. Brandon Li has a helpful video with the ML60's in daytime situations that'll show you what that can look like.

    Does the Godox App work with multiple types of lights? How do the 2 different apps match up?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  2 роки тому +1

      The Godox app works with many of their lights. I've got tube lights, COB RGB, panels, etc and pretty much all of them work with their app
      I do like Sidus Link a bit more, just because its a bit more pro feeling, but the Godox app is useable and useful when needed

    What kind of light boom stand are you using there? Or recommend?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  Рік тому

      For boom I typically am using a c-stand with a grip head and grip arm setup

    I need a key light. Should I get this or the 100d?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  2 роки тому

      Depends on your needs. More power is better to have for when you need it. But these ones here do just fine in a controlled environment.

    Which would recommend? 60x or 60d? The price point is not that far off.

    Should you have a bi color in your kit ?

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  Рік тому

      I think so! I use a bi-color alot as a rim or hair light

    Hey another question again. So I have the litter brother of this and what I seem to find is that with a diffuser and grid the light doesn't seem powerful enough. This is for the godox ml30bi. I use it at work and always have to turn up my iso to get good exposure even when the light is on max power. I know bi color lights have less power than straight up daylight ones, but is this normal? thinking of investing in smallrig, or amaran 200bi lights or something.

    • @FellowFilmmaker
      @FellowFilmmaker  Рік тому

      Yeah 30w isn't that much. I'd recommend a minimum of 60w as a keylight in most situations where you don't compete with sunlight. If you are competing with sunlight then you'll want 200 - 300w as a keylight.

      @@FellowFilmmaker alright thanks :) never knew that the 30 after ml was the wattage.
