Recorded “live in the studio” at the Park House in Denver, CO, on November 20, 2015. There was no audience, since the venue was closed at the time.
I always associate this song with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, because my favorite memory of playing this song was from MLK Day, 2010, exactly six years ago from the day I’m posting this (1/18/10 was also the Pie gig where Jeff and I recorded our UA-cam covers of both “All I Want Is You” and “S.O.S.”). The Pie Pizzeria is less than a block from the campus of the University of Utah (nestled downstairs under the U of U Pharmacy). Didn’t you know the Pie is underground? Part of its charm. Anyway, during our gig that night (our gigs there were always on Monday nights), a large group of African American students came in and sat very near us at a table against the wall immediately to our right. Groups of African Americans are all too rare in Utah, I’m afraid! So it was a beautiful and welcomed sight, those U of U students smiling and visiting, all aglow from having come from some kind of gathering on campus celebrating MLK Day. They handed me a request list, where they’d circled “Redemption Song”. I was a bit self-conscious in that situation, as one might imagine. I just hoped they would sense the reverence I have for that song from my performance, instead of feeling like I was co-opting it or something. But since they requested it, I was honored to play it for them, especially on that day.
What burned this gig into my brain forever was what happened next. As I was playing the song, they all pulled out these 8”x10” pictures of MLK that they’d gotten at their celebration earlier and began waving them back and forth with the music. I got choked up, having to sing the line (twice!), “How long shall they kill our prophets, while we stand aside and look?”, since it’s safe to assume Rev. King is one of the “prophets” of which Marley was singing. The students gave me a very warm round of applause afterwards, which just sealed it as one of my favorite gig memories ever.
In the lyrics, Bob Marley pleads with us all, “Won’t you help to sing redemption songs?” So I guess this is me trying to help do my part. I hope you enjoy it, and sing it with me.

Among all the excellent covers Mike Masse has shared on this channel, I think this is among his very best. The song itself is technically simple, but there is not a false note in this performance, and the emotion shines through.
It's remarkable to consider the sheer range of music and artists that Mike covers effectively. I've dabbled with doing covers, many years ago, and can appreciate the musical dexterity required. Bravo, sir, bravo.

Listening to a lot of your songs. Wow - you are now one of my favorite singers. This song means much to me and a wonderful tribute on MLK day. When I moved to Alabama 30 years ago I was inspired to be where many of our heroes of the civil rights movement fought their battles. I wrote the "Ballad of MLK" and "Ride the Bus".
