@B Tab that is very true! The patient typically wants the pop because it offers a feeling of satisfaction, but it is not necessarily more effective than an adjustment without the pop. This chiro injured was seeking something unnecessary, and injured my spine in that effort.

As a Manual therapist, I was always taught from day one, we are not chasing the crack/pop, if we chase the sound it means we do not understand the anatomy. A successful adjustment means improvement, or return to the normal biomechanic range of movement of a joint, muscle, tendon or ligament, with or without an auditory pop. If the soft tissue surrounding the joint is mobilized and has the correct elasticity/lengthened the joint will correctly reseat itself in most cases. With harder HVLA maneuvers we would approach with the muscular system first, manually and also applying passive joint ROM, gradually increasing intensity. Most cases forcing an adjustment after several failed attempts shocks the body to a point of self protection as in it self preserves by over tightening some areas, forcing against it might over stretch the nerves, minor tear to muscles, tendons, fascia and ligaments.
With an area that stuck, it's built up over time/accident, the nerves and spinal cord has changed shape a little also, so any sudden extreme changes can cause the nerves to stretch too quickly, like a live wire touching surfaces due to the unstable extra spaces.

    • @CoreBalance
      @CoreBalance  11 місяців тому +14

I am in complete agreement, and appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I made the mistake of allowing someone to perform whatever maneuvers on my body he saw fit because he wore a white coat ("white coat syndrome") and have learned since that was the last thing my body needed. I should have listened to my intuition, communicated my discomfort, and set a boundary to this health care professional. My hope is that others can learn from this and avoid the same mistake. Thank you!

My chiropractor literally changed my life. After years of problems from a snowboarding accident, went through a couple Physiotherapists that sipped coffee while they had me ride a bike or put electrodes on me. My GP just prescribed stinger and stronger pain meds. Dr. John was the only one that investigated and cared enough to help figure out the CAUSE of the problem. in a couple weeks I could play sports again, get back to work and really be myself. The internet hates on chiros but they really change a lot of peoples lives, you don’t know until you’ve been through something like this. the logic people like in this video use, is “I had a bad experience / reaction with one professional, therefore all of the professionals are bad”. imagine if we said that about other healthcare professionals…. Every year hundreds of thousands of people DIE from normal procedural operations from nurses, GP’s and surgeons, but the internet doesn’t suggest all of them are bad! Use your brains people.

I completely understand, Steph. I started having back pain at 16 years old and received pressure from my mom to see a chiropractor (parents just want to help). Unfortunately, one wrong adjustment cost me years of pain. For me, the solution was developing a healthy core connection to support my posture and movement (not getting adjustments). I highly recommend you expose yourself to this education… I teach all about it here: ua-cam.com/video/rYFOwxhI3OM/v-deo.html if you are interested.

As a chiropractor myself, this Chiropractor doesn't sound like they were a good one. I use many techniques that don't use the clicking noises, and its specifically called diversified technique. Many Chiropractors don't even use that technique!. Spinal instability is also very vague, and your symptoms depends on many factors, and depends on how many treatments you have had. We are highly trained and highly skilled. It is the same with other professions, you get excellent professionals, and sadly you get not so excellent professionals. You can get Surgeons and Doctors who can cause damage (including death), but you do not judge the whole profession just because of a bad egg.

Thank you for sharing, and I completely agree with you. This is a true chapter in my back pain journey, but does not mean it is true for other people's chiropractic experiences. If you read my responses to the comments, I've been sharing the same message as you - that this was one bad chiropractor. Just like any profession, there are good and bad, and this is not exclusive to chiropractors. Another belief I share is that the long-term solution to back pain is not hands on treatment or techniques. I believe the the lasting solution is one that involves developing a better relationship with how you move and use your body on a daily basis. That said hands on work can be a very helpful catalyst in one's journey to get there. Again, thank you for sharing your knowledge!

@@CoreBalance I agree with you that movement and exercise is beneficial for long-term prevention and management (there is lots of research to back this up, and it's not a new concept!) and again we are trained in rehab in our 5 year degree, and many Chiropractors also advise patient on movement and specific rehab! Unfortunately media has made it seem that Chiropractors only offer short-term solutions, and it's incredibly false. I work with and have worked with amazing Chiropractors that are passionate about long-term care and they are motivating patients to be self- reliant. I just wish people understood more about what Chiropractors actually do on a day to day basis. I'm not sure if you are in USA, but this is a very different type of practice, in the UK we are extremely evidence based. I wish you well on your journey!

@@garf96 thank you for sharing! We are in the US, and here Chiropractic is typically a 4 year degree (maybe rehab is the 5th year they are missing here!). It's possible that your reputation in the UK is affected by our media. I'm aware that many chiropractors do use movement training/rehab in their practice, but I can also say that I've seen around 10 chiropractors over my lifetime, and only 1 of them had me do any sort of exercise after getting adjusted. The rest simply adjust and send the patient home.

So grateful for my chiropractor. He basically saved my life. I was living in such extreme pain, no idea wtf it was, had so many ultrasounds, X-rays after my first child, every doctor my answers would be “oh well you just had a baby, even a year post birth your body just needs more time” or my fave “loose weight” if I wasn’t becoming more and more unable to walk, stand, move around period, I wouldn’t have been gaining the weight to begin with 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ 9 years later, not a single answer, eventually got so bad I was waking up screaming and crying, throwing myself out of bed so I could drag myself to the bathtub and soak in scolding water just for some relief. Finally my husband had enough of watching me suffer, I was in so much pain, so depressed form this because what the hell, I was 19 years old when I gave birth, I was so physically active before kids, very healthy, how on earth could my body become that of an 80 year old woman so rapidly? My husband dragged to the chiropractor, one X-ray and he knew right away what was wrong, and what happened that caused this… the hospital entirely screwed me during child birth, could have shattered pelvis with their incompetence, I had epidural, we were new parents, had no one, no knowledge, this woman in the hospital had me push with little break in between, I’m lucky I wasn’t damaged worse. Chiropractor told me my SI joints were damaged during labour, + with all the pain making me move less and less my L4 and 5 were shifted forward way too much. Since I started seeing him + doing physiotherapy with him, I finally could walk around for more than 10 mins, could finally do whatever I needed to do without pain, play with my children, my life is almost normal again. My doctor as much as I’d love for him to just yank on my legs and pop my hips/tailbone, I’m glad he is so careful and gentle, refuses to push my body when it doesn’t work easily with him. There are bad chiropractors, usually find them at those massage places, they’re hardly chiropractors IMO. And then there’s amazing ones like mine. If you go to a chiropractor and they don’t do X-rays before touching you, don’t do a in-depth check up of everything. Do not let them touch you.

I believe chiropractic is a technique that gradually over time causes lax ligaments and instability. I’m a physiotherapist & Osteopath and a Prolotherapists now - giving Prolotherapy to solve the instability caused by chiropractic or micro macro trauma -

You seem very informed about this, and I tend to agree with everything you said... I don't hear this viewpoint enough. Respect. I will say that chiropractors are usually highly trained in grades I - IV manipulation which should not take joints out of their normal range, and there are some excellent chiro's that stay within this realm. The problem is that it's hard to find them.

yea stories like this give me fear of Chiropractic care period! After a full thermography scan a few years ago my Naturopathic doctor told me I had and unaligned spine and hips very detectable in the scan from the curve and the inflammations and obviously from my yrs. of pain not knowing that is what it was since I have no insurance and don't go to doctors very often at all. Plus, my mom and aunt telling me not to go to one. My mom experienced a chiropractor a few times with her back. She had problems with her back but I don't know it it was before or after the chiropractor she is no long here so I can't ask her again. But her doctor did tell her she needed surgery on her back I think with 2 particular spots in her upper back or neck not sure where they were possibly lower back but yea, she progressively got worse as the years went by. I think chiropractor was something she tried after a dr told her they might help with some pain or with some other things. but she only went a few times. Said she didn't like the popping and cracking. I don't think anyone really does. But I pop and crack anyway and I know it's not normal in everyday life. Neither is pain. But being on a fixed income just can't afford things like I like but oh well. I prefer old school remedies and I search and search on the internet for solutions that can be possibly fixed with exercises. I wonder if there are any like all over body adjustment exercises. I have heard all even from birth need adjustments especially if you were born normal if you were a c-section baby maybe not so much needed after birth.

    Hello everyone,
First off, I am so sorry to hear you endured this type of adjustment. The years on your mentality had to be as debilitating as your dire adjustment.
In 2001, I was assigned a new chiropractic clinic. She was a lovely lady yet she chased, " THE POP. " When she could not attain it, she truly was accusing me, I was doing something in error with no, " POP, " in my neck. She truly went too far as well. Twisting and twisting my neck. I genuinely could have had a stroke.
In assurance, after that one visit, I never returned to her ever again.
The blessings came with, Dr. C.V. Matthew, he was a phenomenal chiropractor. I walk today because he studies you to a colossal level before he ever attempts a popcorn 🍿 syndrome.
Take care of yourselves and each other.

I had pain and tightness there ( mid upper spine in between my left shoulder blade or spine back in 2018. And I popped it over and over until one day I popped it so hard in my car that I lost a lot of my proper functioning muscles on almost all my upper left side. It is now very difficult to flex / feel my upper left pec, left bicep and tricep, left shoulder. Only a chuck fires and also most my left lat and rhomboid. I hope someone sees this and can give me advice on what may have happened. It’s been 5 years and there has been absolutely no sign of recovery and even got slightly worse a few months ago when I popped it by accident again. The skin on most my left side is also become less sensitive but not numb. It’s hard to describe 😢 I’m miserable every day since. I still go workout have been since 2013. Exactly why I refused it when my orthopedic asked would I go to a chiropractic for my spinal stenosis. Being a nurse, I knew that would be dumb so I refused and chose a pain doctor and neurologist instead who told me had I done that with the SEVERE spinal stenosis I have, I'd likely lose my ability to walk. I have exacerbated rheumatoid arthritis and L2-S1 herneated discs. The Z only way to fix my spinal stenosis is with surgery.

Hi Ramiro, thank you for sharing your situation with us; that is very helpful. I do believe that the program would be very beneficial for you.
This is a movement retraining program, which distinguishes it from other approaches like PTs, chiropractors, and exercise programs. After completing those exercise programs and treatments, and returning to your regular activities with the same movement habits, the root of the problem typically persists. To address this, you need to change your relationship with your body, and that's precisely what Core Balance Training does. It teaches you how to connect with your core and move correctly in your everyday life, making it a long-lasting solution that sets it apart from other programs. We believe in empowering individuals to take control of their healing.
If you're interested, we offer a free 7-day trial of the programs first week and where most students experience relief. We are available to help with lesson-related questions through email, the student hub, or in the lesson comments section of the Modules. You can also speak with Dr. Ryan directly on our weekly livestream where he can provide insights and suggestions based on your situation.
Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Chiropractors ruined my life last year. After a neck ajustment I was left with a misaligned jaw, temporomandibular joint dysfunctio then a jaw ajustment left me with a massive underbite, pain between my shoulder blades, a rotator cuff injury to where I can no longer sleep on my right side, hip pain, plantar fasciitis in both feet to where I need a crutch to walk short distances then 2 crutches to walk any further. I lost my job and now I'm disabled. 2 chiropractors and 1 osteomyologist did this to me, later finding out that the osteomyologist wasn't even registered. I have major anxiety issues and depression now and think of suicide occasionally. My GP practice doesn't believe in Chiropractic treatment so now I'm stuck unless I find another chiropractor to help me but I'm terrified of them now. 😞

Most conditions do not require a chiropractor. The most common reasons your skeletal structure would be compromised would be due to muscle imbalances (either over/underdeveloped, injured, or in spasm), issues with ligament/tendon lengths (too long/short), or issues with your joints. Your muscles, ligaments, and tendons are what are holding your bones in place, so, aside from conditions that cause degradation in your joints or other connective tissues, you should not have bone-on-bone interactions in your skeleton, and bones should not be so horribly out of place that they need to be moved by force.
Adjusting the skeleton is best done through adjusting your connective tissues by careful stretching and conditioning through deliberately curated exercises for the target regions. If your connective tissues are out of whack, adjustments via chiropractic are going to weaken these tissues leading to possible short term relief, but ultimately may lead to long term problems.
Understand your body and what your imbalances are, and target those through stretching and exercise. Popping feels good but, in most cases, that's all.
Some chiropractors are genuinely good at what they do. In cases where your skeletal structure has been compromised in a way that has caused pinching of nerves, tissues, or a displacement of your bones where they are stuck, careful and deliberate manipulation can solve the issue, but that must be followed up with proper care such as icing/heating, rest, exercise, and stretching, all depending on the injury of course. Those good chiropractors are good at what they do due to their dedication, but not due to the practice as a whole. Of course, doctors, massage therapists, and physiotherapists can be good and bad at what they do, but their practices in general are more concrete.
If you're looking for chiropractic, I recommend trying to find an integrated clinic where there is a chiro, physio, and masseuse all in-house. Usually, they will triage your issue and develop a plan that incorporates the needed practices. If a chiro tells you that they're all you need, and especially if they tell you that they can cure anything, run.

How do you know for certain that they are great? Trying to find someone that won’t mess me up more than I already am.

All chiropractors are not like that.

Thank you for sharing, Val! I would like to share that there are some highly skilled chiropractors out there that are very knowledgeable about the body. Like any profession, there are good and bad, and just in the same way that Dr. Ryan has been hurt by a chiropractor, he's also been helped by one too. So, we just have to do our research before giving someone permission to manipulate our spine.

    Was it a spondylolisthesis?

Good question! It's a forward slip of one vertebrae (not disc) over another, usually L5 over S1, causing chronic back pain. I give a clear visual demonstration of it in this video here ua-cam.com/video/FJhc4dsbO4o/v-deo.html

These youtube chiropractors have people thinking that the pops are allnthat matters and hurt people giving chiropractics a bad name. A good chiropractor can give an adjustment, its about very slight adjustments, not the pops. He was an idiot

Hi there, thank you for sharing your situation with us. It might be a good idea to be seen by a primary care physician to make sure nothing is broken. After you get the all-clear from a primary care physician, our program can help strengthen the muscles surrounding the area to provide more support to the joint.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I really have to trust someone to let them work on my body. Next time trust your instincts and tell the practitioner you want him to stop. There are a lot of butchers out there and a lot of dumb chiropractors.
