Woman Paralyzed After Chiropractor Visit

- Last year, 29-year-old Caitlin Jensen was paralyzed after visiting a chiropractor. During her routine neck adjustment, her family says she suffered four ruptured arteries, a stroke and cardiac arrest. Jensen endured two months in the ICU followed by grueling rehab. Now, she is getting a tour of her brand-new Georgia home in her wheelchair. Jensen's mother says every day she's amazed by her daughter's fighting spirit and determination to walk again.
Thank you for reinforcing my fear of chiropractors
I never had a fear but I sure won't ever do it..
You should have that fear. It’s insane they’re so prevalent throughout our society. They’re not medical doctors. People get hurt in their offices everyday.
Just don’t do neck adjustments. Also go with someone with years of experience and not someone who has done it for 3 years
No Ive been to chiropractor multiple times. Popped my hip back in place and my neck a few times. Its just unfortunate luck of the draw really. She is incredibly blessed
@@SSW1FTT Or just don't go to a chiropractor. It is a fake science.
I used to see chiropractors. I thought it's the only way I would get relief. But after I started marathon training, I started seeing physical therapists and it not only fixed the pain I had before, but actually was addressing the cause of the pain - weak muscles in key places. Glad this woman has so much support.
Stress and lack of oxygen to certain parts of the body from holding your breath or not breathing properly as well. I used to be bed ridden because thought my back was out. I discovered it was called TMS. A doctor named John Sarno specialized in it and has videos on youtube. I haven't even had a headache in a year, let alone sore limbs
@@dixoncider5046 thanks
good chiropractors should be giving you exercises to keep you in place after youre adjusted. if they dont, then sorry but all they want is your money cause youre gonna be seeing them a lot.

I forgot to mention a friend of ours who was a golden gloves boxer, went to another well established chiropractor in town for a “tune up’’. The chiropractor twisted his neck and cracked it so hard that he was numb on one side of his face for 3 DAYS! Our friend had muscles like a weight lifter, but he hurt him so bad he said I will NEVER go back to another chiropractor! Only by the grace of God did he regain his mobility again. People, PLEASE DO NOT GO TO A CHIROPRACTOR ! All it takes is one wrong move and ……this or much , much worse could happen to YOU!
What happened with the damned chiropractor? Did he go to jail or something?
I hope your cousin sued the hell out that chiropractor.
The same exact situation happened to my cousin. She went to get a neck adjustment and then 15 minutes later collapsed and had to be rushed to the ER. We didnt think she was going to survive. After 2 months in the hospital and 2 years of intensive therapy she finally made a full recovery. It was a miracle. Her family is now suing the chiropractor.
I hope they find justice.

Yeah. The title confused the fk out of me. I only realized what was meant several seconds into the video.
So everyone gonna be nonchalant and not even mention what sh*t-chiropractor did this to her!? Has anyone been charged for ruining this young woman's life??
No. He was not charged. He is still practicing 😒. There is some sort of law protecting chiropractors from lawsuits and stuff. It’s ridiculous.

I too was paralyzed after visiting a chiropractor. I was unable to walk for one year or so until I started doing physical therapy. Thanks to physical therapy, I'm able to walk somewhat normally. @@jltaco85 Good question! I'd say they probably do as one elects to undergo such treatment. I worked in Medical Insurance Sales, and, chiropractic services were not covered. Only real doctors.
Yeah. Idk why people don’t realize that this isn’t normal. A chiropractor doesn’t do this. I never seen one but becoming paralyzed because of their negligence isn’t what should happen. Hope you get justice soon
As someone who is paralyzed, this is AMAZING aside from the misfortune of her paralysis. She is very LUCKY to have a home that was custom-built for her.
The home was obviously bought by the compensation from her being paralyzed. I'd hardly call that luck. She's lucky to have a loving mom, but the home is the least she deserved for a doctor paralyzing her.
@Derek I know people who were paralyzed by doctors in simple surgeries who received zero compensation. Now if she did receive enough compensation to buy a home she is lucky. NOW I was saying that she is lucky to have a home that was made for her because many people do not have a home like this for their entire lives.
That’s like a million dollar or more settlement
@cana cox You would think but you'd be surprised. I know this man who went in for a simple back surgery nothing super invasive. He had a disc that needed to be fixed if I remember right. Well, the doctor did the surgery and when he woke up he was paralyzed from with waist down. Well, he didn't get any money because of the contract/paperwork he signed before the surgery.

Good for you. It's a pseudo science and faux medical procedure that can, like in this case, make things a lot worse for you.

Neck adjustment gave my husband multiple strokes at age 25. 7 years later and he's fully recovered. He's lucky to be alive. So sorry this happened to you sweetheart! I hope you will walk and live a fulfilling life. I warn everyone about chiropractors now.
The whole thing is such a scam. Every problem you can ever have is resolved by simply cracking your neck, your back and charging you $59.99. You're now "re-adjusted," have a nice day!
Jesus! At 25?
Terribly sorry this happened to your husband. I hope you and your husband sued the living daylights out of your husband's chiropractor. That's insane. He should have his license permanently revoked, his practice closed, spend years in jail for negligence and your husband should be a multimillionaire. That's one of the saddest stories I have ever heard of. Not that this will ever restore your husband's health and make him full again but filing a lawsuit and holding the chiropractor accountable will ensure this never happens again to anyone else.
@@richardvonmeyer It would be from the clots formed during a rupture, not from clogged arteries or old age. Never going to a chiropractor!!!
Happens all the time and chiropractors never warn patients. I worked with neuro and endovascular surgeons who see patients all the time after neck manipulation due to stroke or carotid dissection.
This is the second one I have seen this. My neurologist when I was having neck pain to never get your neck adjusted by a chiropractor. I’m thankful he told me that.
So many of the medical professionals never tell you the possible risks.
From my knowledge, chiropractors don't actually put anything "back into place." They just move the joints in a way that temporarily might relieve discomfort, however it will soon move back into its original spot and cause the person to keep on going to the chiropractor for the same results. It's not treating anything besides pain temporarily
My Dad went to one for decades. I once asked him when he would be cured. He got mad and said I just didn't understand. I told him no, I don't understand. I would never go to one.@@Jesus_Christ_loves_you_alot
I once went to a chiropractor on the advice of my physician. He had told me he was excellent & highly recommended. I ended up with 2 herniated discs in my upper back. I knew a boy in high school that was paralyzed from the waist down from a chiropractor. I will never see another chiropractor ever again.
This happened to my husband twenty five years ago, only lower back, two ruptured discs, and sciatic nerve issues ever since. Same as you, this chiropractor was highly recommended from his boss. I tried to tell my husband not to go, I was always skeptical of someone cracking my spine.

That's a terrible comment you made. I more than understand people choosing to avoid chiropractors; I've never been to one myself. But blaming her as if she chose to jump out of an airplane without a parachute is absurd. Statistically speaking, going to a chiropractor is safer than driving to work every day. This is hardly her fault.
This is exactly what I'm afraid of when it comes to chiropractors. One told me my neck was out of alignment and I'm sure he isn't wrong...but my neck is the absolute last place I would want one to put their hands on. I'm sorry this happened to her. So sorry and I pray she has an amazing recovery that is way beyond what anyone would expect.
If you practise mat and reformer pilates seriously for about couple years, your neck and spine will be perfectly in alignment.

She is so incredibly strong. Can't imagine the grief of losing so much.
This is exactly the reason why, even though I am in pain all the time I refuse to go to a chiropractor
I recommend percocet; it did wonders for my pain. I have been on 4 10/325 each day for 20 years with no issues. My doctor will not raise my dose, so that's why I never became addicted!!
It's worth a go. You might just be the unlucky one.
My sister in law saw a chiropractor, who alleviated her pain, but it prevented the signs of her brain hemerrhage, so she collapsed a few hours later unexpectedly while cooking dinner and had to be rushed to the ER.
The chiropractor told her everything was normal and that she was fine when she left, and that he had to continue seeing her to alleviate her pain. The chiropractors also make you sign a waiver when you get in to prevent lawsuits, and the ER doctors told us that this happened way to often, where chiropractors in there limited ability make issues worse by hiding the underlying issue or cause multiple strokes or injuries to clients.
TLDR: Just see a doctor, there is a reason why chiropractors aren't included as part of the medical association.
Omg wow, I hope she’s okay
That’s why I never do this is dangerous just rather have a massage I hope she doing better now.
My chiro dr actually makes you go to a doctor before he will do any adjustments because symptoms should never be ignored. He will only do a adjustment if he thinks he can help. But ive met chiro drs who dont do that and it can be worrisome
I completely agree! In PA school we learned about how a lot of chiropractic adjustments can easily lead to severe complications. I feel like it's also a red flag that you have to sign a liability waiver before receiving treatment lol, kinda says everything you need to know right there!
They won't ever see me in their office.
My 33 year old wife got a routine chiropractic neck adjustment 18 months ago and during the procedure the chiropractor dissected her vertebral artery. She had a stroke on the table and lost movement down the entire right hand side of her body. She spent 4 days in ICU and 3 days in the stroke ward. Was the single most terrifying moment in our lives. Fortunately physically she made a recovery, but still struggles emotionally whenever she thinks of it or hears of stories like this. Blessed and lucky child.
For us not possible without funds n without supporting family members. May God protect us all.
Her support system, and outlook on life will mean everything. The fact that she said she just feels lucky to be alive shows her positive outlook, which is instrumental in healing.
The downside is, after a while, the mental trauma of it all will probably get to her. Someone needs to set her up in therapy ASAP.
I broke my neck a few years ago, and after all of the physical stuff settled down, the trauma of it all opened a floodgate of emotions. Knowing that your body will never be the same again, and you’re stuck like that is rough. Luckily for me, after two surgeries I was able to walk, move my arms, and eat again, after intense PT, OT, and speech therapy. Still disabled, have trouble eating, and need more surgeries, but also still grateful to be alive. I still had the same positive outlook as her the whole time going through it, and the trauma still hit me like a ton of bricks.
Not to mention going through the lawsuit (they freaking better sue) is mentally taxing, and keeps taking you back to through everything.
This is something they don’t warn you about in the hospital, naturally because they’re focused on the physical healing. I kind of want to find a way to advocate for mental health for people like this, but not sure how.

I went to a Chiro and she did the normal adjustments but then started adjusting my toes, I questioned her because it hurt and she said she was ‘very thorough’. Well next morning when I woke up, I could not walk, I went to a specialist who referred me to another, I had to get crutches because I couldn’t walk. Thank god it lasted only a couple of days but the Chiro turned around and said her adjustments could not have caused that.
I went to a chiropractor for serious back pain after living with it for a whole month. 1 session done and i still felt the same. My father was an EEG tech many years ago and witnessed more than once mistakes made by chiropractors. He forbade us from ever visiting one. I share this story with others, yet they still choose to go.
Thank for telling all your stories you all had with a Chiropractor I was going th o go this week I actually mad an appointment with one in the city of Adelaide south Australia where I live I'm not going now thanks to you'll and seeing this story of Kaitlyn my God so terrible for a young person for this to happen just visiting once or so and now she can't walk again my God terrible! I'm actually going to make a new appointment to see a physio instead thanks again !!
There not all like that!.. do your research!!
Probably because it won't just happen to every1, an maybe that's y som still go rather it's taking a chance of getting better or of getting worse ...🙏
That's wise advice. I worked for one when I was very young, and learned enough to NEVER allow one to mess with my neck, even after a car accident years later, when I needed a few visits for my back. I mostly insisted on physical therapy. Even with PTs, you have to be very careful. There's a lot of incompetence going around these days. More frighteningly, there's also a lot of wickedness and pettiness.
@@julieielasi4156 I really want to attend uni in Adelaide
She is very lucky to have such a loving and supportive family during this difficult time. I hope she'll be able to walk again ❤
but girls hated family like this n take it for granted
She not lucky this is the bare minimum.
@@tjkale1800 Yes she is super lucky to have a family that can afford to build her a custom home.
@pedrocols actually it is very unlucky. Her situation was unlucky and it should have been the chiropractor paying for her future not the parents.
@pedrocols . Now not only does she bear the burden but her family does too and the chiropractor keeps doing whatever
i know a couple chiropractors and i smile and nod when they talk about what they do because I have no respect for it and this video reconfirms my thoughts. I used to crack my neck, i played football as a kid, I had one severe accident, now my upper spine pops in and out of place. it was good for maybe a year and just last week i had an episode that left me in a lot of discomfort and a constant headache, it fortunately seemed to pop back in to place after about 5 days. To anyone who cracks their back or goes to chiropractors who have relatively healthy spines..DON'T DO IT..do not crack your back/neck or allow anyone to do it, once it goes wrong you will regret it for the rest of your life. when those idiots crack your neck they would have you believe it is a perfectly precise procedure when there is no possible way they can know exactly what is about to happen
It breaks my heart when I read about what happened to her and her struggles. No one wants this to happen to anyone! Especially heartbreaking when you hear it’s happened to someone so beautiful and promising.
A wonderful vascular surgeon I worked for told us “see a chiropractor if you want but NEVER let them manipulate your neck” and I took that to heart.
My friend’s dad has had chronic and debilitating back pain for 10 years after a chiropractor broke his back during an adjustment. It absolutely ruined his life.
broke his back jeezuz
Broke his back no way. He would have had to have super human strength to brake his back during an adjustment
@@lorraine41879 That's what he told me. I mean this woman got paralyzed. Given the ways they crank on your back it doesn't seem far-fetched that an incompetent chiropractor would be able to break your back or even paralyze you.
This happened to my mother. Went for a back massage for back pain she's been having over the years. That was the last time she walked.
Wow from a massage and not even an adjustment?
Yikes really?? That happened over just a massage??
I am a retired RN and used to work with some seasoned neuro RN’s who had a lot of stories about cases where people ended up paralyzed or having strokes from chiropractor “adjustments”.
This is why chiropractors should take every pt’s BP before an adjustment. They should know not to adjust the neck for pt’s with high bp to avoid any possibilities of a stroke
@@susieirene4208 or they should just stop lying and get a real job
@@susieirene4208 honey, that's not what causes the strokes. look into the vertebral artery.
@@susieirene4208 taking the blood pressure changes nothing. I don't think anyone should ever take that risk and go to chiropractors
Just go to Physical therapy lol
This happened to a friend of mine. She got her neck adjusted and it caused a stroke. She was able to walk afterwards, but now lives with life long nerve pain and has hyper sensitive hearing which prevents her from doing many of the daily activates the rest of us take for granted. She also lost her job as a result and the chiropractor wasn't insured so she was unable to sue them. It essentially wrecked her life.
Why couldn't she sue him just because he didn't have insurance?
@@hajimenagumo2199 he wouldn’t have any money to pay even her lawyers.
i hope she got all of that idiot's assets in a lawsuit. house, cars, everything
Yeah nah the law isn’t that plotholed, if the IRS can arrest a bum off the street for not filing his taxes, you can sure as hell sue a broke man.
@@delanuma5 my aunt tired to sue a contractor for taking her money and not completing the job. He transferred all his money to his spouse then filled for bankruptcy so she was unable to get back her money. So trying to sue a broke man isn't as easy as may appear
Never will I ever think of visiting a chiropractor no matter how tempted I am
Wow crazy story glad you made it. I've never heard about a story like this at chiropractors didn't know they could cause such a change in someone life
my late sister passed away after a visit to a chiropractor. Also because of a neck adjustment. It was a big news in Jakarta back in 2015. This story makes me wonder whether chiropractic treatment is safe.
What do they do, just snap the neck and hope for the best?
@@HollieMoodiethey just throw your head around and hope it fixes the problem
It's not safe.
At best it isn't usually that helpful. It can be quite unsafe
Sorry about the loss of your sister but MDs make even more mistakes that lead to death. We just don't hear about them as much in the news because hospitals and clinics have much more money than the chiropractors do.
My brain almost got paralyzed trying to decipher the title.
*LOL* !!! Best comment! Because of you, my morning is starting off in hysterics! Thank you!
(I couldn't figure out the title either.)
Punctuation changes everything!
Shows you just how precious life truly is.
Reminds me too that family will always be there for you.
“And you won’t believe how it happened.”
I absolutely believe that this would be caused by a chiropractor. No doubt in my mind.
Yes. Naturally!
I wonder what happened to him??
@@rubylimey7614 right. I'm curious.
In this case, she most definitely had a bigger medical problem in her kneck, but thought all she needed was an adjustment because she was in pain already, but that wasn't the case. Anyone who would've cracked her kneck would've done this also to her.
Yeah, right? Haha.
My neurosurgeon always tells me never let anyone manipulate your neck. This is awful. Poor girl🙏🏼
Then the very person you should NOT let touch your neck is your neurosurgeon

What an awesome brother and mom!!
I used to work inpatient neurology and sadly this and strokes after having a chiropractor worked on your neck were more common then you’d think
So question, what about these adjustments causes strokes and vessel ruptured? I’m trying to understand the mechanism 😢
I played football many years and my neck is really bad. I went to a chiropractor maybe 6 or 7 times and it did help, but was always temporary. I spoke with a physical therapist and she told me the dangers. I had no idea. She warned of stroke dangers. I had no idea that people could be paralyzed. I hope she makes a full recovery.
Once there was a case like this in our country Indonesia. A daughter of a Professor who is student of doctoral degree too in Australia, visiting a chiropractor named Dr. Randall Caffeety when she was in Indonesia. Her name is Allya Siska Nadya. After second visitation , she felt so ill in her back and neck...not long after that she became paralyzed and soon fell into coma..and dead.
@@celineprng9172as an Indonesian, I've never heard that story. Time to do some digging
To anyone reading this: See a physical therapist, not a chiro
It's sad how chiropractors get over on people. They obviously have no conscience.
physical therapists and chiropractors compete so they will all try throw shade on each other.
What a supporting family 😢❤
Thank you for your story.
That same thing happened to my father as well. The surgeon that saved him that day said it's really not that unusual unfortunately.
Paralysis is bad enough but multiple strokes... oof. She's a trooper being grateful for her life and smiling.
And a trouper too!
A cardiac arrest means she died too. Thankfully she was resuscitated!
Never going to the chiropractor. Thank you for sharing this video.
Oh god, this is so devastating. Really heartbreaking.
Man this one messed me up, what a terrible accident. I’m glad she has wonderful family that’s more than happy to accommodate her and join her on her journey. My sister was in a wheelchair for most of her life and it would’ve been awesome to have a house laid out for it. I couldn’t imagine having to watch your child go thru this.
I ended up having a disc ruptured by a bad chiropractor 7 years ago. I’m not paralyzed but I was an accomplished martial artist getting ready to open a school. I went from that to barely walking to the stairs. Ruined my dreams and my life completely.
That is absolutely terrifying. Was it lumbar or cervical?
I'm so sorry. 😞
The bright side of this whole tragedy is her loving and supportive family. I couldn’t imagine what her life would look like if she didn’t have them.
The bright side is that her neck pain is probably gone
God will test within ones limit.
Imagine when this happens to someone who doesn't have an amazing family? In a state where Healthcare sucks? Yea me either.
@@productrecall5183 yeah, it would be bleak.
Agreed. She is truly blessed to have such a wonderful family that willing to care for her. My brothers could not give 5 minutes to change my house light bulb. Some family members either spend all their time for their own family or selfish. America culture is very individualistic and isolated life. In difficulty like this, many will really screw.
Her family is amazing.
My older dog's neck was adjusted by a chiro, and about 15/20ish mins later he had seizures. And the same chiro adjusted my friend's neck and she almost died from fractured arteries.
Hang on in there. You can do it. Much love and prayers to all of them! ❤️
@Daniel Pacheco Imagine being this pathetic that you must complain about someone sending good wishes to a person that is paralyzed 😬
so easy to say when its not affecting your ability to live a normal life
Man she’s so brave, I admire her strength and fighting spirit. Hoping her a fast recovery
i dont really understand what people mean by brave? its not like she wanted to get paralised
She is not brave. She is just a foolish girl that believed in alternative medicine and won herself a stupid prize.
@@zendraw3468 Yeah, bet she didn't want to get paralyzed yet she still chooses to believe in psuedoscience
It's insulting to call someone "brave" after going through physical or mental trauma. No one chose that trauma. They're not brave, they're resiliant and optimistic.
@@bailey125 Please don't forget the fact that she ended up here due to her own lacking in prudence by choosing to believe in pseudoscience

Its so sad to see a young person loose the quality of life she enjoyed once, and the agony her loved ones has gone through the whole process of recovery is speechless.....
Still they have a long journey of rehab to go on.

That brother seems like a great guy. I hope she's able to recover and make this all just a memory someday!
She probably will never be the same as before the accident but it's wonderful that she still has function of her mind and can hopefully relearn to walk.
She will recover after another chiropractor adjustment to the neck
I collapsed shortly after having my neck adjustment done. That was years ago and I still live with the consequences of that visit. Severe headaches, numbness and tingling in my extremities. Also after an MRI they discovered stenosis in my neck. I will never go to a chiropractor again!!
