Planting lots of seeds is a great way to find strong root stocks. I like to graft into my seedlings. It’s good practice. I chaos plant tons of seeds and let natural selection decide which individuals are the most aggressive. Those are the best for root stock.

My Dad found a Apricot seedling that had started from the next-door neighbors tree. He transferred it to a different part of the yard and it gave us wonderful tasty fruit for years. It's still there but doesn't produce much anymore, It's 65 years old now but last year we had a bumper crop. Mostly just a shade tree now.

I just planted a bunch of starfruit seeds and only 3 grow. It has been 6 months and the have grown ok i think. I am quite sad actually to learn that it will take years for it to bear fruits. But taking care of them and watching them grow makes me happy. I hope they will grow into strong healthy tree :)

I love your channel and closely following all your tips. Thanks a lot. Need few clarifications on jackfruit sappling:
    1. Can you tell me the difference between growing a jackfruit sappling from a seed vs grafting? Which is better?
    2. Which is the best manure for jackfruit sappling? How often the manure needs to be given?
    3. Currently I have kept the sappling in a 12" x 15" grow bag, how long can I keep it in this? and when to transform to land?
    4. I have used "Red soil + Vermi compost + Cocopiet" mixed together and kept the grafted sappling in the mentioned grow bag under a shady mango tree, is this fine? Or need to move under direct sunlight?
Kindly need your advice on this.
    Thanks in advance.

I planted 6 red delicious apple seeds. Two survived and grew into full size trees. That was 7-8 years ago. The largest tree is over 20 ft tall. It just started fruiting this past year. They are half dollar size apples. I believe the fire blight is in the tree but it is still alive.

One benefit of grow from seed is the tree will have very strong root system and often time needs lesser watering.

How do you figure it' needs less watering? Just like the variance in the quality of the fruit, the quality of the rootstock will also vary when planted from seed. Using established rootstocks eliminates this variable.

Given that you won't relocate the plant, the one grow from seed has taproot. That root will go vertically downward to the more consistent soil, moisture. The trees from nursery are potted from bareroot stock.they only have feeding roots and often grow shallow

so the main reason for grafting two different varieties is for getting more fruit faster? does the cross pollination change the flavor of both fruits? also if i were to take a cutting from a peach or apple tree and just root them with no grafting, would i still have the same variety of fruit? like if i cloned a Macintosh from cuttings, would i still get a Macintosh?

I say if you have the room for it it's a great idea to grow fruit trees from seed, especially if you already have grafted varieties. That being said if you're say growing things like apples from seed it's good to use seeds that had good parents. And certain fruits can pretty consistently grow good fruits from seed that are similar to the parent. If you end up getting fruit that you don't like you can always graft a known variety to that plant as well.

Hey, do you know why seeds from grafted plants often do not germinate at all these days? Are the growers doing something to the trees to stop them from being propagated so people can't grow their hybrids themselves?

    • @TheBusyGardener
      @TheBusyGardener  Рік тому

I'm not aware of fruit seeds not germinating! There is no reason I can think of that they would do this, or why you're routinely not getting seeds germinating. Most hybrids aren't worth eating, so I don't think that's it.

    Seeds that Show Polyembryony
    Always reveal New Variety.
May be having alittle bit combination of Carb and ascorb Blend as seen in case of Apricot .
Large Polyembro yielded considerably good size and tastier Apricot with no bitterness in flavour as compared to
The Monoembryonic seed sown showing more bitter taste with slight touch of Sweetness although tartness was there.
As far as Colour comparison is concerned ,
Darker Colour shows Bitterness and Tartness in varieties .
But what in case of Dates ?
    One may get Smaller* size
    Can Sweetness is changed* Over*😉

That's wrong. Because hass avocado camed from fuerte seed. So if Rodolphe hass had tooken grafted avocado or he had insisted on hisself to grafted it then we will not have now the hass avocado ! The seeds always give new variety maybe good maybe perfect than the others. And maybe medium or not good. But every variety have something special like good prodution or best fertilizer or best to use in plating in soil to be grafted after like zutano. You should explain that to people and encouraging them to don't graft their plants for find new varieties. Every year the people around the world finding new varieties in mango avocado almond... New variety means new life. We have the save the environment from the grafted plants.we need diversity

I have 3 grafted varieties of apple: Anna, Tropic Sweet, Joy's apple. Anna has never produced regular sized apples. Anna's are slightly larger than Crabapple, but smaller than plums so I believe the scion was not Anna as the nursery stated. It also seems to have higher chill requirements. None have never had fire blight. So while I am a proponent of grafted trees and the years of time saved by purchasing a 1-2 year tree there is always a risk that even a trusted nursery will either purchase or incorrectly label or graft the wrong varieties they receive because they didn't correctly identify the scion or they can't tell. A relative bought a blood orange from a big box store and when it finally fruited years later it appeared to be a navel orange.
I think this is happening more recently with higher demand for fruit trees. So understand that even when you buy from a grafted fruit tree there is still a chance your results in 4 or 5 years will be the same as planting a seedling (just better rootstock). So ask your nursery do research on the tag and the grower. I had purchased a "Christmas Loquat" from my nursery that had another tag that said it was a Bradenton. Christmas Loquats usually set fruits early and sometimes don't do to cold spells damaging the flowers/fruit and the Bradenton sets fruit later in the growing season. Returning is easy and I wanted an extended harvest season, but I wasn't going to risk finding out it was a Bradenton or other variety a few years later so there's a fig in its place.
So again, do your research and keep those receipts for at least a year because the high demand is causing regional commercial nurseries to make mistakes and your local nursery may be none the wiser. Yes it is a small percentage, but for some small backyard growers it could be a a waste of time and hard earned money.
