What does your mulching look like? I've seen it take a dusty, silty area and turn that into soil that becomes more rich with each year!
If you're interested, here is a book that covers mulch in more depth, and includes how it affects other plants and vegetables too: amzn.to/35eDMTS (affiliate link)
I'm in Mississippi with mounds of orange clay. I planted 2 plum trees 4 years ago and they look terrible and haven't given me any fruit yet. Im sure its the soil. Before I pull them up and turn them into Mulch, should I try pulling back the soil around them and applying construction paper and a thick layer of mulch?
Paul Gautschi--Back to Eden--piles his up against the trunks and his orchard is gorgeous.
I smiled when i saw the pink tape on your scissors. I buy pink scissors for the same reason. I also paint about a 2inch bright pink stripe on all my garden tool handles. When im up at the house and looking out and i see pink anywhere i know i forgot something out there.
The contrast is SO helpful! And with kiddos, the chance of it being left out is that much higher
Your info is great you should have way more subs..come on people...
I appreciate that! From your keyboard to UA-cam algorithm's ears 😜. Seriously though, thanks for watching.
Excellent video! I do the same kind of thick woodchip mulch in my fruit orchard, and it works great to keep the weeds down and build the soil. Keeping the mulch away from the trunk can be challenging over time, but I try to check it every week. 😊
Only the most serious garden nerds get as excited about mulch as we do 😂
@@TheBusyGardener Yes, I admit it. Proud, happy member of the Garden Nerd Club! ☺️
I put 12” mulch down and as it broke down over summer the grass grew so thick and quickly, now my area is raised around my trees. Zone 8b
Whoa, in 12 inches of wood chip mulch?!? One good thing about stuff coming up in mulcyh is that it's easy to pull. Did you put down any underlayment of paper or cardboard? That makes a big difference.
Good Information 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the visit!
For newly transplanted Jujube fruit trees (that are supposedly bearing age of 7 years old and about 6.5 ft. tall after transplanting), that were sent with damaged bare roots and branches not more than a few inches long, would you recommend doing the same? I've already transplanted them and mulched with cardboard but should I add a stake because I can see that if it is windy, the trunk sways a little and I'm worried about the roots not getting established. On the other hand, I understand that trees shouldn't be staked because then they become dependent on the stake and never become strong enough on their own. What do you (or anyone reading this with fruit tree experience) think?
I personally don't have mine staked, and we have some pretty severe winds. I think making a heading cut should be just fine!
If my tree drip like is 8 ft wide, do I have to mulch that wide?
Yup! I would. The mulch is to create a very habitable environment for your tree's roots, and these roots extend to the drip line (or further)
I’m starting a new orchard area, can the mulch be too thick? I received way more wood chips than needed so it’s probably 16” deep in spots.
WOW! I have never considered whether or not it could be TOO thick. It's a challenge to get enough material spread. I think as long as it's pulled back from the trunk, that amount should be fine. I would keep an eye on your moisture to make sure your soil doesn't remain too wet. Mulch away!
Yes you can, it will rot your tree
Because if it's too thick you can't keep it away from the base
Great video as Always! Do you have stray cats poop on the mulch piles? That is my big concern!
I haven't noticed any in particular, but we have a lot of wildlife around here (some of whom we are battling)
Does the paper add chemicals to the soil through the glue in it as it degrade?
I suppose it's possible, depending on the paper and however it's made. Same would go for cardboard or any other manufactured product that breaks down over time
where do i get a trucks worth of mulch from?
Hunt around for inexpensive deals, or even better, contact any of your local tree trimming companies FOR FREE MULCH! I did that here: ua-cam.com/video/rSZkuaLrdX8/v-deo.html
🙏🇮🇳🙏
U should take out the paper stuffs, it keeps the tree roots from absorbing water. I can see your trees dont grow strong
They don't?!?
