Sleep Token -Bloodsport (from the room below)
This song is the most raw exposure of him singing and it is breathtaking.

This song punches me in the gut, cuz I feel like he's talking to himself he says 'my reflection just won't smile back at me like I know it should' then at the end he's basically saying 'smile back at me' like he's begging his reflection to smile back. God this band makes me feel all the feels

Wonderful analysis as always. It's definitely one of the most personal songs for Vessel on the album. It becomes even more heartbreaking if you take out the concept of a lover and just imagine him singing the song to himself directly in the mirror. I hope he's found his happiness.

That was exactly the way this song came across to me, Vessel asking himself if he wishes he loved himself or has he become so consumed by negative emotions (self-loathing, self-doubt etc) that he feels like hating himself is correct. (That only something terrible could love what he sees in his reflection.)
Or you could take it as a bit of commentary/conflict that artist's often deal with, namely that most of their best art is derived from the emotional scars and trauma they experienced. So there exists a tension between wanting to heal, and thier own success. So asking himself if he could trade his success and fame for never having to go through the traumas of his past, would he take the trade?

@FIddlertheleper for real. That's literally what the song is.

@@FIddlertheleperI'm 6 months late but you're spot on here. And the conflict with fame you referenced is 10x stronger now than when he wrote this song. Just watch their performance at Wembley. He loses his voice, which must have been one of the biggest let downs on his life, but then he graciously watched 12,000 people pick him right back up as they sang every single word to every song he wrote back to him.
The most amazing moment of the night was when he decided to come out for a second encore - blood sport. My dude was crying so hard he could barely get out the first words he's ever spoken (not sung) to his fans: "thank you, thank you." It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen, and I've only seen a cell phone recording of it.

@@FIddlertheleper you're very welcome. There's two full recordings that pop up. The one by the channel "Room of mirrors" or something similar, and is 1 hour 43 mins. That's the one where you can clearly see him in that moment.

I love the contrast in this song between the dark seriousness of the lyrics, and the happy little pop beat of the music. Very clever. One of the most unique songs that they've released.

Vessels voice changes like each characters in their visualizers, he's an emotional shapeshifter. This song is just ouch... maybe not that you conceal your feelings, they just don't exist.... DAMN💔😔

i think its both a reflection of himself and also a call to a lover. the line "And I've tried so hard to fix it all, but nothing seems to help
But I cannot hope to give you what I cannot give myself" i feel this one down to the bone. my wife left me about 2 years ago and as much as it still kills me i understand why she made that decision. i had demons that i never faced from my earlier years and it made me unable to be present in the relationship. i couldnt properly love because i didnt love myself. its been a hard road but you can change if you really want it. you have to do it for you before you can apply it to another person. i cant express how much this band has helped my healing process and i consider myself privilaged to be alive where this music exists

I feel the song implies that it's Vessel singing to himself in front of a mirror. He mentions his reflection as well as the perspective that reoccurs. Begging himself to find a reason to...Smile back.. At me..

What I love of this song,is that they completely understund the assignment of joyfull melodies telling me sad things,is like channeling all this pain in to a beautiful stuff, like Andre 3000 do,also they have a cover of Hey ya ,I feel his influence particularly in this song

There’s a lot of talk about this song and how it is possibly more to do with self love. I’m glad they didn’t put in a breakdown to make him sound angry. It gives more of a feel of accepting and understanding this way. It’s like the start of the breakthrough required to be able to move on.

  • @oneawayfromnone3669

To me this song isn’t about a relationship but about man who doesn’t love himself. That’s why the line where he says he’s looking the mirror and not smiling back is so important. The ending ties back into that with him repeating “Smile back at me. Please” is him begging himself for love in that same mirror. Heartbreaking.
Edit: Made my comment a little more eloquent haha.

I am nearly 50 years old and married to the girl i already fell in love with when i was 13 years old(she never recognised me, the universe needed 21 more years to get her ready for me😉), we have the most wonderful children and i am a happy man! But there were phases in relationships in my life that i until today never really understood..... Your analysis of those lyrics just helped me to visualise what was maybe wrong and made things very difficult at times 😳 I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes watching a reaction video on UA-cam, damn this is strange.... Thanks man! ❤

had me laughing at the start with the "ran her over" 😂 but my face went serious real quick once you started spitting facts about not relying on partners for happiness. that's a lesson i had to learn the hard way a couple years back. it might be painful but you'll always be better off for it in the end!
i've seen a lot of people say as well that the song can be seen in the perspective of singing it to your reflection - which, the song hits a lot harder for me with that context. great video 🙏

whats gonna really blow you away is that vessel sings, writes, composes, plays guitar, piano, bass, the only instrument he doesnt play is drums. the man is a powerhouse. the going theory on the music is that the albums map out the journey of adam coping with the betrayl from eve and being expelled from eden and adam wandering the earth wondering what and why his love wasnt enough, and his anger, fear, and doubt about what happened, and eventually his hate of eve for what she did. but again just a theory

5:41 that's such a nice story! It lowkey reminded me of their song "the love you want" and I thought I might as well mention it XD
Also while I'm commenting might as well say, just binge watched your Sleep Token reactions and I really appreciate your analysis and commentary! it adds a lot to the experience, and even though I've already somewhat formed what the songs mean to ME, your analysis also makes me see the lyrics and the song in a way that I probably wouldn't have so it's really fun!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us~ hope you enjoy your journey with this band and I hope you get to react to some of their older songs cause they're also very amazing!
And as others have said this album is part of a trilogy so listening to more songs helps you get the lore together which is (at least to me) also something fun and something that I look forward to see you do (hopefully)!
Again thank you for your reaction and take care!
