    This song hits me hard. I’m so glad you caught on to the self conversation in this song. I have struggled with self hate most of my life and mirrors are very hard to look at for long. I’ve had these talks with me and it hurts to hear Vessel do it too. Things have gotten a lot better for me in recent years thankfully. Once again, great work!

      Also POTENTIAL SPOILER FOR RAIN: at one point, the line “the vicious cycle was over the moment you smiled at me,” which kind of feels like a direct response to this song-his reflection finally smiles back at him, breaking the cycle.

    This song is a lot of people's least favourite, at least at first hearing :p
    It eventually grew on me because the lyrics are fantastic and I appreciate that it is unique. I also believe that he very deliberately wrote the poppiest possible music for that one - in the spirit of "Hey ya" - to defuse the heavyness of the general theme and deceive the listener into thinking at first that it is a happy, dancing song.

    • @MrMcFattyfat
      @MrMcFattyfat 10 місяців тому +1

      IMO, the super upbeat poppy sound isn't meant to confuse listeners or "diffuse the heaviness of the lyrics," but rather to juxtapose the calm and cheerful outward appearance he shows to the world with his true feelings of pain and self-loathing that hide beneath it. People experiencing depression commonly have a hard time opening up about what they are feeling, because they eitheir don't feel like anyone cares enough about them to listen, don't know how to convey their experience to someone else, or just simply find it too difficult to talk about. They fear that revealing their true feelings will lead to rejection or cause people to view them differently, so they instead choose to hide what they're going through in order to maintain the status quo. It's why news of someone's suicide is typically met with shock and disbelief. People say things like, "Oh my god, i can't believe it," and "I wish i would have noticed." I believe the tone of this song is a brilliant way of symbolizing how the subject (presumably Vessel) internalizes his negative emotions while putting on a facade of well-being, deceiving those around him, and potentially even himself, into thinking that everything is fine.

      @Potato_Bug 9 місяців тому +1

      Ooooo!!! You’re right- They did cover “Hey Ya” and DYWTYLM definitely has that same contradiction between a sound so upbeat and catchy that the listener can’t help but bop along while we also hear very thoughtful and serious lyrics.

    This song isn't my favorite either. BUT! I normally would let it play passively in the background if I've got the album playing. One night, out of nowhere, the lyrics absolutely broke me. I think it might have been that he ends the song begging his own reflection to smile back at him, and I don't think I had ever noticed.

    Good in-depth reaction especially since you didn't care for it as much. I think the simplicity compliments and highlights the lyrics. The rest of the album pushed hard in each song to subvert expectations, where as DYWTYLM peels back the changeups so you can focus on the emotion coming through. I really appreciate the layers and sounds they combine in DYWTYLM. Give it a couple listens through.
    Can't wait for your next few reactions!
    Also, a rereaction or review of Take Me Back to Eden would be cool since you have listened to Chokehold & the rest of the album.

    After the first listen, I also thought that this song was kinda weak compared to others, especially for a single. It is obviously inferior to the summoning. However, in the context of the album it works very well for me as a chill moment in terms of volume. Later I began to like it as a single. It's not overloaded with instrumentals, but the lyrics stick in the head and resonate with every cell of body.

    No worries dude, it’s a lot of people’s least favorite song. That and AYROK. As you said, that doesn’t make it bad, it’s just not a favorite. I like how you picked up on the introspection. It’s definitely him talking to himself. Lyrics kick ass but it’s definitely not a very musically dynamic song. I’ll be honest; I didn’t like the song upon first listen. Then I paid attention to the lyrics.
    Congrats on partner! You’re thoroughly entertaining so you deserve it! Ready for the rest of the album, but sad that once again it’s coming to an end. 10/10 album and reaction.

    I am in love with every song on this album, but i get what you mean about it being "poppy". I call it bubblegum music 😅. I'm not a fan of bubblegum so I didnt like this one at first. But after going over the lyrics and listening to the song again and again, it grew on me. Does it mean I go to the album to just play this song??? Nah! But i won't skip it when I put on my playlist. I just let the music play and it's so nice to just let play through.
    I always felt like he was singing to sleep/mask, especially the part where its not that he conceals his feelings, "they just don't exist". Like he realizes he's been waiting for sleep to show how he feels for him, but that sleep may not feel the way he'd hoped. And i can see it as self reflection as well. As always, great lyrics that just pulls you in. Vessel is pure genius. Hands down! Even with bubblegum music 😂😂😂
    Someone mentioned already that you should react to Acencionism and TMBTE again now that you have some perspective. I second that! There are call backs you will catch for sure.
    Great video as always...when you are done with ST you should check out Chevelle, they're really good. Also Volbeat if you've never heard them. Their drummer is top tier as well!

    I find the marimba sound very pleasant to my ears so I actually really like this song! Haha but I totally respect your musical tastes not really vibing here. It is quite repetitive with only the drums and vocals providing minor switch ups. But yeah the lyrics hit! Love your analysis. I’ve always viewed this one as a conversation with one’s self in the mirror like you said. A song dealing with self-love and the struggles he and others of us can deal with in regards to that. Can’t wait to see you experience the last songs on the album!

    Not one of their best too repetitive and robotic and frankly boring. I couldn't appreciate the very good lyrics because the music was annoying. I keep wondering what the song could have been if the music had been crafted differently. I guess I get that they were trying to change up from too many heavy songs but this one is one I won't ever go to again to listen to.

    I totally get not liking the no change in the musical composition throughout the song. At first, I didn’t totally care for the song beyond the lyrics myself until I realized that the no change in the music represents how when you go through trauma, heartbreak, and loss, that certain feelings and emotions and memories are stuck on repeat. A monotone representation of how life is gray right in the midst of depression.
