  • Here I am in week 7 of my first ever (Manchester) Marathon training and it's not a good week. Running my longest run ever with a cold was not fun and there's more chafing to talk about.

    Well done on sticking with it. Sometimes it feels as though everything is stacked against you. I have runs that are horrible and I just want it to finish. That's just part of marathon training. Don't let it get you down though, the next long(est) run could feel amazing, like you are flying effortlessly. Keep going, you are doing brilliantly. 👍

      Thank you. You're right, not all runs are going to be great. I just need to remind myself of that more often. Fingers crossed my long run of another 26K this weekend is going to be better 🤞 Thank you for the kind message 😊

    To think that you ran your longest ever distance feeling like crap!! Enjoy your down week and come back strong, ready for the next long run. 29 or 30?
    Well done!

      I just found the run really hard and I've always found running long distance very challenging. Then being ill and everything, it just got a bit much for me I think. I have a down week then another 26K, followed by (I think) 30 and 32K before another deload week. I have a bit of niggle this week though, which I really hope is nothing serious 🤞 Thank you for encouragement!

    Amazing mental fortitude to keep going when you’re feeling rubbish! Just a tip for rain running - have you considered wearing some kind of peaked cap? I wear baseball style caps but you can use proper running caps or even just the visor type that just go around your head in a band leaving the top of your head exposed. It’s really really great at keeping the rain out of your eyes and face 🙂

      Thank you. It's so tough keep pushing through but I really want to do this and prove to myself that I can. I do normally have a visor (open-head) when it rains but it wasn't meant to rain so I stupidly didn't bring my waterproof jacket or my visor. I was naïve and believed the weather forecast 😒 It's a really good advice though. I've had a lot of use out of mine. I'm currently looking for a closed-top/baseball-type cap for when it does rain loads to keep my head a bit dry but I like to try them on before I buy and I can't seem to find that many in any shops these days. Do you recommend any brand at all?

    I use a hydration vest! I love it! It's got plenty of pockets for gels, chews, and extra water if needed besides my water bladder.

      @@YuennyLam Don't remember if I told you this before. I ran my first Marathon last month in Houston, TX. The weather was clear skies but cold with gusty wind blowing all through out the run. I did not wear enough to keep me warm. I saw a few male runners running shirtless and female runners running with just a sport bra and tights. I wondered how the heck they do it, are they not feeling the cold as I am?
      My suggestion to all runners is to check the weather and dress properly for yourself to be comfortable during the run. The cold weather affected my marathon experience, as I was more focus on the coldness.

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  4 місяці тому

      @@Prisonmate Yes, you mentioned about running a really cold race. I check before every run and the forecast didn't mention rain and I naively believed it was going to stay dry. I should know better with the English weather. From now, I will take my waterproofs on my long runs just in case and whatever the forecast says.

    My God those roads look stressful. Running next to cars looks scary. Do you perhaps have any parks or trails to run on?
    As someone who got cramps during his 1st marathon at 26 km I highly recommend eating enough the evening before the long run. Also like you mentioned. Remeber to take enough gels (I would do 1 every 30-40min.) and salt pills before/during a long run. Especially during warmer days when the sun is shining you will burn a lot of calories and salt during those long runs.

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  4 місяці тому

      Unfortunately I don't really live near any parks or trails 😞 I really hate running right next to a busy main road, but I'll have to drive quite far to find somewhere decent that's also long enough for me to do my long runs. Where I'm living is hopefully only temporary though 🤞
      I couldn't agree more with taking enough fuel and salt/electrolytes during long runs especially when it starts to get warmer. I've experienced my first (almost) cramp on my calf during an easy 9K run the other week, because I didn't eat or drink enough that day. Even though it was only an easy run I definitely felt the effect due to lack of preparation thought. Thank you for your input. I really need to remember to do this if I want to succeed.
      I've been intrigued with salt sticks but don't know anything about them. Do you just take them or dissolve in water?

    • @BM24DK
      @BM24DK 4 місяці тому +1

      @@YuennyLam Great to hear. Those long runs are no joke. In terms of electrolytes I usually take 1 pill (maybe 2 pills if the run is +25 km)) during long runs in hot/humid weather. It really depends on "how much" you sweat. During summer periods and humid weather I tend to sweat quite a lot and feel nauseated during those long runs without some salt.
      If you prefer not to take salt pills/tabs then you can also simply mix a little salt into your water bottle which should have the same effect. 😊

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  4 місяці тому

      @@BM24DK Thanks for your response. I've started to put electrolytes in my water again on my longer runs. For some reason I just stopped doing that, but maybe because it hasn't been that hot, but I still sweat a bit. Temperatures don't get that hot here normally and I'm not a massive sweater, but definitely makes sense to top up the salt, even when it isn't that hot out. You'll still be losing fluids even from breathing.
      I normally only have one 500ml soft flask with me with electrolyte so I guess salt pills/sticks could be an easier way to carry them when I've drunk all my water.

    • @BM24DK
      @BM24DK 4 місяці тому +1

      @@YuennyLam Okay it sounds like you already have your preparations done well. I myself use Saltstick Caps Plus which gives electrolytes and some coffeine. The coffeine is simply for a minor energy boost. The regular version does not contain coffeine and has slightly more sodium. I haven't tried both versions though so can't compare. 😅

    • @YuennyLam
      @YuennyLam  4 місяці тому

      I think I'd like to try the salt sticks. I have some gels that have caffeine in them but I don't take them all the time. Usually I have it just in case I need a boost right at the end of a long run and I feel like I have no energy left. Getting the fueling right is so important. I've definitely learnt that during this Marathon training.

    Well done in the horrid conditions Yuenny , especially as it’s your longest distance to date, they say your skin is waterproof yes but running in wet trainers and socks also the clothing becoming heavier isn’t the most enjoyable part of the training when it’s like that, stay positive , do the best you can 👍🏻

      Thank you 😊 When I'm prepared I can deal with the rain a lot better. You're right though, I find having wet shoes, socks and feet really uncomfortable while running. That horrible sensation where you feel the water coming through your shoes and touch your feet! I'm only at 26km, so far from 42.2, but it felt so hard 😔 Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I'll need it to get me through this 💪
