- Interview with Jay "Lords of Dogtown" Adams & "Buttons" Kaluhiokalani at Ted's Bakery on the North Shore of Oahu. This particular day, Buttons was promoting his new "Buttons brew" coffee and Jay came up to support his friend.
Two icons and legends that led the way of progression in the action sport community; Jay led skateboarding & Buttons led surfing to their next levels during the 70's & 80's in California & Hawaii
years ago I was surfing the same peak at El Porto with Jay Adams. Da guy was killing it. We both got out of the water at the same time and I complemented him on his abilities. He told mem that he didn't like the way his board was coming off the top and asked me if I wanted it. Before I could say anything, he handed me the board and said, "Alright, easy Brah..." and he was on his way.
Jay's words stick in my head: 'I regret all the good surf I missed because I was wasted'
I love these guys! I saw Buttons on the North shore riding his scooter! God bless them!
UA-cam loves you back Buttons. We here and appreciate the teachings
Two legends; I remember flipping through the pages of Surfer and Surfing mags in the 70's, Buttons was always there.
WOOOOW!JAY ADAMS WAS MY CELLY IN LAUMAKA!"LIFE WAS GOOD"WITH YOU AROUND BRUDDAH!"REST IN RADICAL"HOMEBOY...🏝️🌋🤙ALOHA-A-HUI HOU...
Fuck that's a rad thing brah. Wish I could chat with you
I can't believe so much time has gone by...
In my mind it seems just like yesterday that I saw Buttons and Jay .... Rest in peace boys. Rest in peace.
ONE LOVE !
Had the awesome opportunity to surf with one guy and see the other surf Malibu. I grew up during my teens in Dogtown. Surfed with Jay at home a lot, but we went to Malibu on a perfect south swell. In
1978 saw Buttons surfing the same spot 3rd point during the Sunkist Pro. Ben Aipa and the Hawaiian boyz were all there.
i love how at 1:58 you can see both men forget for a sec that they are on camera and they relive the youth of each others soul and it makes each other truly happy again. priceless.
Unfortunately mistakes in the past may affect you in the future, whatever you do. And this is true for all of us. RIP Jay and Buttons, 2 legends
Two HUGE influences on me growing up a surfer/skater in California (Jay and I are the same age). Hard to believe that these two are gone.... but obviously, not forgotten. Thanks for this post.
BUTTONS & JAY ADAMS, idols of a whole generation. Keep goin man !
From Fabio, a Brazilian guy.
I LOVE JAY ADAMS.... I watched the movie "LORDS OF DOGTOWN" like 200 times.. JAY ADAMS IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!
I grew up with Jay in Venice, I followed Buttons in the magazines, it's good to see this video preserves their testimonials, experiences, wisdom and advice as well as the early history of surfing and skateboarding. Miss you both RIP
VENICE HOODLUM,TEAMPAIN ALL DAY!👊👊
He was a real man
Jay-the Lemmy of surfing and skating. The short footage of Buttons on the doc Dogtown and Z Boys is phenomenal!!
R.I.P. these two guys changed the way we surfed and skated they won't be forgotten legions
Agreed 100%
I went to elementry school with Jay. He was so funny you just couldn't stop laughin makes me lough to think about it.
The party life style shortened their lives even after they cleaned up, the damage was done. I wish they were still here to share their positive message
Rip too both of these legends
rajah dat, brah !
it's never too late to turn your life around.
Amen
I swear to god that i´ve just seen the same face-play in Jay Adams face that Emil Hirsch was doing in the movie. What a great young actor he is.
RIP Jay Adams and Buttons
JAY-BOY IS AN INSPIRATION!
Jay surfed as good as any pro in Hawaii and Indo.
Coolest dude. Super humble
Great to see that your still clean Buttons. You give me hope to stay clean. Addiction kills. God blees you. thanks
I had a chance to surf with Buttons a few weeks ago near Haleiwa. He's a great guy, an awesome surfer, and his Buttons' Brew is really smooth tasting coffee.
Didn't get a chance to meet Jay Adams though which was a shame since he was( and is) one of my favorite skateboarders of all time. Aloha, bruddahs, and Merry Christmas to you!
Buttons was a kool guy.
Rest In Peace, to Jay Adams and Buttons Kaluhiokalani !
I love how they talk.
Hi Meg ...
True Legends !!!

awwww, these guys. tear to my eye. nice one! :-) i met up with buttons and his brother from time to time in waiks.
2 fuckin legends right here, mad respect
"The Original Seed" Godspeed you on your way Jay
this is great..such much to offer kids comin up..
Buttons has such a wonderful character and the message from Jay that is better to be sober is so right on. Too many prescription drugs going through people's body and its harming them while the pharma companies are making a killing, both in money and the human body.
Absolutely and totally influenced by Buttons, Bertleman, Lopez, Jay Boy, Alva, DogTown etc. in the 1970's.
Helped shape who I became and am eternally grateful!
Mil gracias por vida!
I'm 53 and i very recently reminisced tube vids as i skated in the uk when it swept everywhere, saved like crazy to get a decent board, anyhow's we knew the epi-centre was California but no idea who the dudes and z boy's were .. thank goodness for youtube as getting to see the backstory from these originators is priceless .. thanks to them, their compadres who made it all happen
BRAH,JAY TOOK ME DAWN PATROL AT SUNSET POINT W/DA BOYS, GEAR'D ME UP WITH SUM BLUE "CAMO" BOARDSHORTS&SWEET NEW SURFBOARD.I'D NEVER SURFED BEFORE IN MY LIFE.I MADE IT TO THE LINE UP LIKE A PRO,WAITED UNTIL THE BOYS GAVE ME A GO-AHEAD CLAP TO LET ME KNOW IT WAS MY WAVE,ANNNND THEN I TOTALLY DID THE"NORTH SHORE"MOVIE DIVE LIKE "RICK"😆TOOK THE NEXT WHITEWASH IN AND CHILL'D UNTIL HE WAS DONE PLAYIN'.WHEN HE ASKED ME "WHAT HAPPEN"🤣BRAH,I ALMOST DIED OUT THERE,"YOU NEVAH SEE".JAY SAID,"YOU SHOULD'VE COME BACK"🤙MISS THA"VENICE HOODLUM"SHOUTOUT TO HIS FAMILY&FRIENDS.YOU ARE TEAMPAIN👊👊

This is the launch of mine and Buttons Coffee on the North Shore, Hawaii. This is the interview with Butts and Jay Boy. Jay came by that day to Support the launch our Buttons Brew Coffee.......
Surfers and skaters share so much in common with musicians, and often times they cross over. Both incredibly prone to substance use, ever chasing the high. I speak as a skater and musician. Thank you both so much for your massive contributions to LIFE.
Ty brothas well said and well timed
2 kings of soul
LEGENDS!!!
Two legends
gem clip
holy shit 2 of the best people of all time on video together
They both seem like real friends and really cool people.
Garbage Grove represent!! LOL
Ron Johnson little Saigon - _- LOL
I swear I saw that dude buttons on Dog the Bounty. Dog had to go find him and said he was a pro surfer.
that was cool.
Two legends taken from us too soon
RIP BUTTONS
Sick shirt Jay! hahah
what i think is cool is that now that these guys are cooled out a little, the guys that looked up to them give back to them so that they dont have to hit the shit runnin again and it makes it so they can get their heads straight and contribute again. skate companies should have like a retirement set up for all the pros, You know like .25 or so cents off every sale towards tHe fund
Legends, soon rad!
❤🙏
the LORDS have found the answer! kewl!
Funny that Bottons and I met because we were both said Larry Bertllman was fat, still remember us both laughing our ass off about it. RIP Brother

mahalo Buttons Kaluhiokalani vai com deus você vai pegar as melhores ondas lá no céu KANALOA
way cool interview but very hard to watch. Buttons was a huge influence on Kelly Slater's surfing and anybody who rides a board of any kind has some of their style in their riding.
@NoLimitzPlz
THE Z-BOYZ BRO HAHA
@fancymaxrocks haha yeah fool thats actually true.
Buttons rip aloha
@TheFashionbugs innovate
buttons was first to do a 360 on a surfboard?
That's the claim. Buttons was the first one to do a 360 on his board, but until someone comes up with proof and evidence that someone else did a 360 before Buttons until then, Buttons is da man.
ONE LOVE !

You are a humble person FREEDOM.
ONE LOVE !
J-adans ta pegooooo COcainee!!!!
You need only say Jay Adams. We know who he was from back when, to embellish his name with a movie BASED on Dogtown, though a labour of love for Stacey Peralta, was an episode in time we og crew would rather join Stacey in the "never again" bin. Fact is, Jay Adams RIP, has way enough standing on his name alone. Why not just refer to him as pioneer Dogtown sk8er ? You are catering for the cotton wool gen and kiddies. I lived through the Dogtown era and was a very close friend of Grant "Biff" Murdoch, RIP. Regards from Tuckombil via Alstonville and East Ballina.
