There will never be another quite like him, inspirational and way ahead of his time . He moved the sport.
Just learned of Buttons, and man he truly is inspiring to watch and definitely ahead of his time with that 360 turn.
Finally ! Tribute to one of the great legends of surfing
One of my idols, Mark Smith as well.
Truly inspirational surfer that I believe bridged a gap between different generations of surfing. I think of him as one of the most important surfers that made modern surfing what it became today
I always loved Buttons...........He was way ahead of everyone's moves. He had a feel of the ocean that was unique to him. Even the star surfers like Shaun Thompson, in my opinion, could not touch him. Buttons did NOT get the recognition he truly deserved nor the countless victories he should have acquired in competition. He was an innovator of the sport. LONG LIVE BUTTONS!!!!!!
I was blessed to surf with him at V land and have him call me Uncle!.....Oni Pa a!
I use to work with him at the Hilton,he use to crack me up, he definitely had a big heart and was such a fun person to be around.
Something very magical about how Buttons surfed. I hope he found peace in the end. His surfing brought joy to many...
I can tell you that he did. With the help of his friends (DaHui) he found much piece of mind and happiness 2010 and on!
He cleaned up his world. Got in maybe the best physical shape of his life at 52 .
Married an incredible woman (Hiriata)had a lovely new daughter.
Got very involved with the community and GIVING BACK thru access Surf and his Surf School!
Ventured back to Costa Rica and spread the kind of Aloha that only Buttons could! .
Getting to know him in his later years , if only for a moment , I can tell you that the man had attained Real REDMPTION and Spiritual PEACE!
~~~~~Aloha
Rip Buttons! 🤘🏽🤘🏽 a legend that I will always remember!
Da' man Buttons. He was my hero and idle. Miss him bigtime as does anyone who loved this guy.
Peace up Hiriata.
Stevo.
Growing up surfing, I always heard the best surfers say that the best surfer in the world is the one having the most fun. By this measure , Buttons was the best. Even beyond having the most fun in the water , he was years ahead of everyone else by the maneuvers he was pulling off. So much Aloha wrapped up in one person inspires us all.
Nice seeing Mark talking about Button's. Hope he is doing well
"He was just an unreal human "
He looked a Nice and funny guy
Buttons and Bertlemann. Gods in Surfing's Mount Olympus!
My favorites are eddie aikau, buttons, and Larry bertlemann
Amazing style , true blue Hawaiian . Too much , too young , is a great way to put it . He loved surfing , taught many to surf and changed many lives . He would have give you the shirt off his back , the aloha spirit was strong with him . Ohana. Rest in paradise Buttons .
Rest in Power 🙏🏾🤙🏾
I want to be like BUTTONS
But no H
Had Button’s posters all over my room in the 80’s. Back when the magazines put a poster in the middle. Legend!
Buttons Pelé of the Surf. Just only It! I ever saw in my Live somowone like his! Raste in Peace King!
Thanks Buttons. Bless you
Mark Lidell is the most gracious dude. It's so great to see, since I grew up in Pearl City (birthplace of T&C) during that entire era. Saw them in the water all the time, they were the lords. Lidell's surfing was featured in lots of films during that period-- he and Buttons were pretty much the central figures in Many Classic Moments and they pulled it off, they were great--but I don't remember much dialogue.
takfam07 my hero's as a grom
The best surfer on any day is the one having the best time, sharing a high vibe with strangers and friends alike.
1974 at Uluwatu Buttons Before he drove 16 year old you could see even on a skate board he just shredded .Really friendly fun to be around . Loved to party which I think as he got older was a problem . But when ever we hung out either at Ulus or Pipe little at Sandy beach it was always fun he only knew me as “ skate board” it’s sad he’s gone so early .
Hung out with him 1 summer, 80s ,outrageously funny and cool, told me to call him da solo popolo, which was only pro surfer at the time! Jeff S I surfed with you! USD, scali. Matk westside oahu.
Surfing Legend !!!!! Beautiful classic times !!
Definitely! Thanks for watching, jc s. In case you missed it, get caught up on the action from the Hawaiian Pro here: bit.ly/2zXy61a
Such an honor I get to meet him and live with him with his girlfriend friend and kids on north shore ❤️ such a good man.. Mahalo uncle Button!
Aloha a hui ho!
Legend ...
i used to paipo board at graveyards with him, then he got this Hansen knee-board with a spoon deck and he was doing roundhouse cutbacks into 360”s, just blowing minds🤙🏼
R.I.P BUTTONS.!!!!
I remember a footage of him surfing in some early 80's surf film, and he with Rory Russel at Pavones in Costa Rica, doing some incredibly mind blowing surfing, totally ahead of his time.
Love your Surfing from San Diego Ca i Surf on team with Bird all Had Caster Surfboard's
Love this man.
Definitely, Anthony! Thanks for the love to Buttons. He was an incredible guy with the dopest style and personality.
One of my favorite surfers ! RIP Buttons 😔 make Jesus laugh !😇
Magic surfer, aloha legend
Most Excellent ¿
I met Mark and Buttons at the Kuhio o Kalani by Bowls, I was a grom (gromet) comparatively to them but they treated me like anyone else, on the level. I'll always remember THAT. Buttons was/is ALL Action. ACkshoon is what I would call IT. He tried to bring it out in everyone. To get you going. A hui hou.
angel man
Cryin happy tears now aloha ahuiho....
Hey kids he is doing all that on a single fin.
Rest in Peace Buttons.
i love uncle button
Tube la dicha de en los 80 tener una tabla local moción que era de buttons cuándo estuvo aquí en costa rica
Polynesian with Melanesian hair! Wow!
*_”Buttons had everything thrown at him. He was a classic example of too much, too soon, too young.”_* Absolutely correct & true about all sports, which physically or mentally kills a lot of athletes.
Definitely the best & most talented surfer ever, far better than Kelly in terms of raw talent - remember, he’s doing all of this on a single fin.
Can dey do eddie aikau
And notice no leash ...
BD’
NoMore Raid Land’
I feel fortunate to have helped Buttons tackle his drug demons and becoming a very close friend of his and Hiriata.
He was of true heart and soul on the Aloha Alobrah spirit with me, Hiriata to.
🌴🙏🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🏄♂️🙏🌴
If you want to understand what people in Hawaii mean when they talk about spirit of aloha, just watch interviews of Buttons and what his peers say about him. That is aloha.
As a young kid 11 yrs old in 1975, I graduated to Kaisers after working my way up the reefs from Queens to Pops, to Threes. Way out of my comfort zone, on a head high , light trades, packed Late August afternoon. The lineup was filled with All the locals. A set loomed and riding a tanker , was Buttons , He set himself up perfectly . And stuffed himself into a machine like tube so casually, and came right out. It was amazing. I didn't catch any waves. I just watched and learned . I'll never forget his smile , the vibe in the water was just pure aloha.
Song ??
He was my friend @ real life
💔
Kanaka .
Buttons is my uncle
what was his drug?
Third rd surf
How come a HA native/legend /master was sooo inviting to all? How did the Da Hui or whatever they were feel about that? What is all the bullshit imitation about... I think they could look and learn
It’s a shame to see what has become of the Triple Crown contests. A true disgrace to past champions.
Classic!!..
