Huntington Beach was where I first met Jay when I was 11 years old. He was very cool, let me tag along and didn't look down on me or treat me any differently which really had an impact on my interest in skateboarding & surfing for the rest of my life.
I'm glad you interviewed him and future generations will be able to watch this.

I had a similar experience on the North Shore in the late 80s. I had just moved there from SD. I was watching him rip V land and when he came in he started talking with me like I had known him all my life. At the time I didn't know he was the J Adams. He had a shaved head and was kind of buffed. I just thought he was a military guy that ripped. Over the 10 years I was there I often ate breakfast, lunch or dinner with him at Di Amicos. Always fun to hang with. Always made me feel like a Pro. Glad he knows the Lord.

I love that all of his answers were positive. He didn't dis on anything that kids are doing now, just appreciated everyone having their own opinions, preferences and so forth. What a cool guy.

Jay Adams' story may be sad but it is also heartwarming and his name inspires awe, basically the man is legendary but also increadibly vulnerable and misguided. A real person.

Jay didn't kill no one. His buddy was wacked and shit bro. It wasn't because the guy was gay. Do gays have like gay stickers saying hi I am gay? Listen Jay is from the streets and had some bad circles. He cut ties and is trying to contribute back to the community and is only human. He also made history and was top of his day. Now it is about doing the best he can day by day. If you got some hang up then maybe you need to ride a razor scooter or something.

The thing I think is Jays best trait is his honesty about his bout with drugs. He has defeated his demons through being perfectly blunt and never apologizing to people who get offended by his demeanor because generally he was abusing himself not other people. Not too many people would survive that road. Its like skating that big full pipe in the ground in complete darkness and making it out the light at the end.

Thats not true at all. Jays adams took skating in circles and in between cones to flying around pools and bombing hills aggressively. Rodey Mullen came along years later, but is the pioneer of 'street' skating.

I was from a little bit of a different background but REALLY similar...I was born into motocross racing & I started in 1994 (I was born in September of 1985), so my time in motocross, I say A LOT, I saw the birth & explosion of "Freestyle Motocross", "Supermoto" (which seems to have really fallen out of favor FAST since Doug Henry ended up in a Wheel chair, & Rightfully So!!), I've seen the Big Switch from 2-Strokes (which racers & riders have been on since the sport STARTED) to ALL 4-Strokes...

He may have gone through some shit, but now he is in god's path. Christ forgives us of our sins, Jay is a believer and good for him. God bless him for finding the truth. Kids, you don't need to do drugs, do what you need to do. Life has a bigger purpose and I hope that you find that purpose. Peace.

Before the internet all there was was Skateboarder magazine. You'd see these photos. Then go out and try to replicate what you saw in them. That's how I'll remember Jay Adams. And thank goodness Craig Stecyk (and others) were filming those sessions. Only after I stopped riding did I get a chance to see Jay or any of the guys in live action. And it's also kind of funny. After seeing some of those live sessions on UA-cam I now realize that they weren't always pulling off what I saw them trying to do in those photo stills. So I don't feel so bad now when I think back and remember the times I ate it while trying to do some of those things myself. ; ) Jay and Alva and Biniak were my idols.

much respect to Jay, he was there and he did it. sometimes history hits a bottleneck and a handful of people do something that spawns a massive sea change and it's impossible to imagine how things were before it happened. i wish Jay a future life of health and satisfaction , knowing that he is an absolutely critical part of American history. What else could a person hope for?

Heath Ledger also did an incredible job in his portrayel of Skip Engblom.
I saw Dogtown and Z-Boys (Stacy Peralta's documentary), they were showing some footage, then this voice started speaking, and before they even showed who it was, I knew it was Skip Engblom, just based on me seeing Heath Ledger play him in Lords of Dogtown.
