Kent Sherwood (Jay Adams' step-dad) was the man behind the manufacturing of the Zephyr Fiberglass skateboard. In 1976, Jay Adams and Kent split from the Zephyr team and started the short lived E-Z Rider brand that then became Z-Flex Skateboards that is still around today. With his refined skill in fiberglassing they launched the first Z-Flex skateboards in 1976 from his workshop in Venice. Coming out initially with three different shapes, with the inclusion of the Jimmy Plumer later, Z-Flex Skateboards was one of the premier skateboard brands of that era.
Now generations strong, Z-Flex remembers its rich history and continues its path of determination and dedication to skateboarding through a limited release of iconic Z-Flex Vintage Premium (ZVP) products.
To celebrate the heritage of skateboarding and the brand, Z-Flex reunited team members from the past as well as fellow skaters of the 70's to re-tell the ever-popular Dog Town story from the people that actually lived it.
In the two part mini-documentary series- take a trip back to the 70's to relive the skaters, spots, style, and products that shaped skateboarding as we know it today. Starting with Part 1: The Beginning.

When Alva said “Jays still here. Thank god.” Fuck man RIP Jay boy.
Rest in Peace Jay Adams. May your soul skate the universe now.
Jay Adams always the best skater and my hands down favorite skater ever. Shred in peace. I hope when I die heaven is skating with you in the 70’s in a big dog town in the sky.
Hey guys my dad read about you guys back in the 70ds and you inspired him to skate now about 4 months ago I bought a zflex longboard and loved it thanks guys. Jay your fucking awesome
These guys (Z Boys) invaded the Irvine Skatepark in 19 seventy something one day when I was there, their style was what we all aspired too .. so fluid .. like butter .. a style I never saw again even to this day.
It's like watching home vids. Brings back alot memories growing up from those days in Long Beach and Venice
Thanks for this great footage.
I love everything about this. The style, the skating, the music, the attitude. Thank you for making it.
thanks z flex', for the cool storys and pics'! of jay and others', inspiring me to go for air'!
Rest in Peace Jay Adams.
RIP JAY you will always be my #1 inspiration in skating and in life
Love this shit. Raised on you guys. Much love and Respect. Not a ramp guy. Downhill all day.
Z flex Boards & The Legend Jay Adams what a fantastic Combination Gone to soon Rip Jay enjoy the Ride 😎🛹🌴👌
That was one of the sweetest decks ever designed, in my opinion. And not just the look, it was the ride. When I got on one of my kids decks later on in life, I was like "what the fuck is this!?!" I had to ask which is the front and the back? They were like "dad... peep the trucks?" "Oh yeah, Say no more!!"
But after a few hills and ditches I under stood what i was riding. The concave felt kinda right. Anyway, Love those Zfleck decks, it was like witchcraft or something. Very addictive. I don't know where the "skate or die" thing came from but I was definitely into
"Skate and destroy!"
Rip Jay Adams. inspired me in so many ways
Killer, Lets see the OG Z-Boy ripping the new ZVP!...Yeah!!!
ROCK EN ROLL!! THIS IS GREAT
I can remember as a kid, the two guys that thought me a little about skating and gave me skateboards(decks). Tony Alva and Fred Flavell. I became the DAFFY King as a kid.
Awesome video
Yeah man, radical,I would have loved to have one of those Z flex glass board on the east coast my young clueless ass had a sheet metal board mite have been a kona not likely ,like I said I got dropped off at a brand new indoor park in 1975 to 1977 with out any idea of what to expect, got this sheet metal board every time I did a kick turn Cali moon walk it would bend the tale so I stop bed it back and go a little more than the skate park manager,is like we need to get you a real board,so he gives me this 8.5 Lonnie Toft...switching my wheels over, red Ryder street mush..but it was cool, but made of balsa wood, fast forward,a month or two of doing flat land shit and getting dizzy trying to spin 360s,I come thru the front door and the half pipe is shaking and there is this noise of this dude thats shredding the Faac out of this giant 14 foot half pipe,it's 1976 ish 77,mind u,so I run up to the roll in deck,to meet this guy,he was blasting front side and backside airs and at 60plus feet he was almost going fast enuf to carve it dead in the middle like at ten five may 11 feet at 80% of vert u guys would have shit yourselves if u saw this monster, well the guy was cool enuf to help me learn how to do airs I started doin 4 ft airs and he was mad that I learned his tricks in four days,he was good teacher and I really paid attention because this was freaking awsum flying off the wall since 1977 ,oh sorry, but it was...year later the insurance company jacked the rates and they closed without a sound, except for me screaming standing outside the locked door with a brand new winch taperkick, with indys and yo yos only to find out the real truth Monday....check out skateboarder magazine tour of USA skate parks 1976 or 1977 we made it in SKATEBOARD WORLD. In Nanuet ,New York all ply wood we built some 8 foot quarter pipes one to slow us down coming out I mean dropping out onto the street area, they were just a little over vert with coping and that's were I got cokes into dropping in for the first time, what a rush dropping in for the first time and every time after that's all I wanted to do after learning how to drop in was just drop in all the time just go with it,hah what a rush...hah ha...
Piece out good stuff surf style all the way...the only way...hey one other thing I was into stickers on the bottom of my Toft the best one I had was this chrome one that said I like my pools empty,I never. Knew what the fuck that meant ,you guys on the west coast got any idea ,something about a drout in Cali ,being on the east coast I never understood what the f that meant but people would look at my stickers and say I like my pools empty, and I say oh yeah that's right I do,what ever that means, hah hah hah hah,I was ten an clueless just enjoy the ride and flow...thanks man check out skateboarder mag you see 76 or 77,I know I saw a lotta pics of you guys at the top of pools bust ing coping loose and crazy shit see ya.
O sonho ainda está vivo!
Even Jay eating a freaking burger at 9:34 looks intense.
Love dogtown z boys rules
This is where I fell short. I learned to skate. But I could not surf to save my life. So I tried to skate their style without any surf. And I learned on boards THAT WERE NOT MINE!! Only for a little I made it work
