    The reason the commentator is specifically wanting to know if he hit the backboard on the first McClung dunk is because it makes the dunk far more impressive cuz you have to jump high enough to get what is called "hangtime" in which your momentum transitions momentarily from up to down, and it appears you hang in place momentarily... that is required to have enough time to hit the backboard and still dunk the ball w authority. Complex answer. Lol

    I think it’s hard to realize how impressive what they’re doing in this video is, and hitting the backboard is just an “extra” that makes a move that is already impossible for most people even more impressive lmao

      they're not fans of the NBA :) all good, people are teaching them in the comments as they go. to a non-fan i could see the backboard tap looking really random and subtle. it makes more sense when you learn all the subtleties and creativity these people have to add after nearly 50 years of dunk contests
      edit: also rewatching it now, one of the commentators (reggie i think) says "you gotta touch the g-" meaning "you gotta touch the glass if youre gonna go for that backboard move" but it could be very easily misinterpreted

    McClung is the sort of athlete who can play multiple sports. He played soccer in high school until he decided to focus only on basketball, and he ran the fastest quarter-court sprint at the NBA combines since 2001. So he is very fast to go along with having one of the best vertical leaps in basketball. It runs in the family because his sister ended her high school career as the all-time leading scorer in her league, and played for two major universities.

    Back in the day the stars used to participate in this like Jordan, Kobe, Vince Carter, etc. Over time it became an event that the stars didn't want to be bothered with. So now you just have guys who are just at varying levels of experience . Some may not even be guys who actually get playing time, but are just really good at dunking.

  • @johnnyhayz4896
    @johnnyhayz4896 Рік тому +1

    They only mentioned the backboard because it’s an added move and makes it slightly more difficult. Any player in the NBA is eligible for the dunk contest, however, the star players want to rest and prevent injury especially if they have playoff aspirations. I don’t know if he plays other sports but his dad was also a dunker so he definitely has a basketball upbringing. And if you think he didn’t look the part being under 6’2”, you should hear him talk. Deep southern accent lol, sounds country. If you like basketball do yourself a favor and watch the Denver Nuggets, especially Nikola Jokic. Put your money on him getting another MVP award and the team going all the way sooner rather than later lol!

    NBA G League is the NBA developmental league. At any given time, NBA teams can sign players from this league to fill any open roster spots due to injuries, players being released, player buyouts after a trade, etc etc. Players from the G league can be signed for any duration, from just a few games, to the remainder of the season. It's not uncommon to hear a player signed for 4 games, or 10 games, or 12 games.

    There’s no requirement that participants be rookies. The contest is technically open to any NBA player. Usually older players don’t participate much these days. Most participants are in their first 4-5 seasons, so early 20’s. Back in the earlier days of the contest (1980’s) more established players like Jordan and Dominique Wilkins were still doing it into their late 20’s/early 30’s

    In the NBA, normal game sequence show-boating would be either dunking on an opponent (standard dunk usually nothing flashy) or breaking your opponents ankles with your dribbling and handling skills. Doing "Dunk Contest" like dunks only really happens during a regular game when a team has a comfortable lead and or its towards the end of the game and theres little risk of losing the game.

    You should react to Mac McClung’s high school dunk mixtapes. He’s from the county next door (gate city was a huge rival and thank god I graduated 7-8 years ago not having to play against him) and a local phenom. He’s the best basketball player to come out of this tiny coal region of Virginia by quite a bit. The area usually produces occasional high level college/NFL players over the years so it’s great he’s coming up.

    Scoring is completely subjective but they're generally looking for impressive athleticism, just something that makes you go 'Wow'. Creativity is has become a big part of it and props are sometimes used because there's so many impressive dunks that have been done before, thus making them a little less impressive, unless there's some kind of new twist to it.

    - You don’t have to utilize the backboard on dunks, it only increases the difficulty of the dunk (which is usually rewarded by the judges depending)
    - It’s ok to travel in the dunk contest which is why you see a lot of players holding the ball
    - The player who did it the “arm in the rim” dunks wasn’t impressive because 1) it was done before like 25 years ago 2) it’s very common that NBA players do that dunk (sometimes in game lol)
    - Orginality, difficulty, and execution (you typically lose points if you don’t make the dunk on your first attempt) is what the Dunk contest is graded on.
    - Formerly, the Dunk Contest use to have more notable players like MJ, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, and Dominique Wilkins but with how the NBA is, a lot of players decline the offer to do it. Many of these players are under 25-26 years old. But they aren’t all necessarily rookies.
    Congrats to McClung too.
