You don't have to hit the backboard. You don't have to do anything except dunk the ball. The points are awarded on style, originality, difficulty, etc.
I know they know, but the fact they spent half the video discussing the ball hitting off the background cracked me up.
It’s because of the serious hang time . He could make a cup of coffee ☕️ up there 😂
I love how they think you’re required to use the backboard 😂
And how serious they’re being about it lol. These guys couldn’t even shoot free throws irl. I’d love to see an Office Blokes dunk off.
Daz consistently being wrong while sounding smart is the best
Dude could deliver the State of the Union and we would absolutely believe everything he said, even the part about the free cable included with Medicaid. 🤣
He’s consistent with it at least.
To be fair, he will admit when he is uncertain about something. It's a tough position to be in. Since he lived in the U.S. he's kind of expected to fill the other blokes in on info about all things American .
Daz got a couple of things wrong here, but he is obviously the smartest of the 3, well his general knowledge is normally better than the other 2.
Dave is the one that is constantly wrong, he knows nothing, about everything.
The reason the commentator is specifically wanting to know if he hit the backboard on the first McClung dunk is because it makes the dunk far more impressive cuz you have to jump high enough to get what is called "hangtime" in which your momentum transitions momentarily from up to down, and it appears you hang in place momentarily... that is required to have enough time to hit the backboard and still dunk the ball w authority. Complex answer. Lol
PLEASE watch Mac McClung's high school mixtape next. Seeing him dominate the competition as a 17/18-year old was just unreal to watch for those of us who started to follow his career 5-6 years ago.
Agreed, hes truly a legend and anyone who was an aspiring baller knew of his name at the time. Its soo nice seeing him making it to the big stage now
I felt like a proud dad watching this dunk contest 🙂 we been knowing this would happen for five years.
@@Anorxite4 shit sound sad
@@kennymccormick9292 what?
I saw him in person against my high school.
You just have to dunk it. Mac hitting the backboard just made it a harder dunk
😂😂😂
Dave getting so confused was the funniest part of this video 😂 there is rhyme and reason, but I could see how it would be confusing if you don’t know.
I think it’s hard to realize how impressive what they’re doing in this video is, and hitting the backboard is just an “extra” that makes a move that is already impossible for most people even more impressive lmao
What makes it funnier is that Daz is so confidently propagating the belief that they have to hit the backboard too 😂😂😂😂
I’m confused on why you guys are getting hung up on the backboard thing. There isn’t any rules, they just thought by tapping the backboard it added extra complexity/flair to the dunk.
they're not fans of the NBA :) all good, people are teaching them in the comments as they go. to a non-fan i could see the backboard tap looking really random and subtle. it makes more sense when you learn all the subtleties and creativity these people have to add after nearly 50 years of dunk contests
edit: also rewatching it now, one of the commentators (reggie i think) says "you gotta touch the g-" meaning "you gotta touch the glass if youre gonna go for that backboard move" but it could be very easily misinterpreted
It was so jarring lmao
It was really a treat to see you guys come up with this off the backboard set of rules 🤣 idk where you guys came up with that
Dude is only 6'2" and has a 47 inch vertical jump, and he made every dunk on the first attempt. no they aren't all rookies... as of recent years they have been mostly younger players that are not huge superstars. This was the first good dunk contest since 2016 which was insanity!
Mac deserved those 50s for making them all on the first try.
As someone that grew up around Mac, he was a few years younger than me but he was always the fastest most athletic kid of the bunch and probably the most athletically gifted person I’ve been around. I remember he was just as good at football and baseball as he was basketball, just decided on basketball when he started high school.
Mac McClung's cousin is "meme" rapper Riff Raff, if you're familiar... He comes from a pretty athletic family.
His sister played college soccer, his uncle was in Major League Baseball, he has 2 aunts played college (national team) Hockey.
You guys should react to the 2016 dunk contest. By far one of the best ever
Kinda funny how you see it from a casuals perspective and they get hung up on the backboard. That never ever crossed my mind, even when I was a kid and just got in to it.
They’re not all rookies in the dunk contest, but often they are lesser-known players. The big names sadly choose not to participate in the dunk contest usually.
Why risk injury to win $150,000? It used to be the best dunkers, big names were included. The incentive is not enough. Would love to see Steph Curry in a three-point contest, but nope.
@@blackblake3658you want one person to win almost every year? 😭
@@blackblake3658 tf are you talking about? Curry has won 2 of them already lmao
2016 dunk contest > every other dunk contest ever.
Mac McClung is 6' 2" tall. He also has a 43 1/2" vertical jump.
Side Note: On February 8, 1986, Spud Webb, who at 5'7” was one of the shortest players in the NBA, wins the slam dunk contest, beating his Atlanta Hawks teammate and 1985 dunk champion, the 6'8” Dominique Wilkins. Anthony Jerome “Spud” Webb was born July 13, 1963.
3:28 He has a camcorder because of the now iconic images of Shaq holding one during the 2000 dunk contest.
Y’all have to react to Zach lavine vs Aaron Gordon dunk contest now it’s the best one ever
please
McClung is the sort of athlete who can play multiple sports. He played soccer in high school until he decided to focus only on basketball, and he ran the fastest quarter-court sprint at the NBA combines since 2001. So he is very fast to go along with having one of the best vertical leaps in basketball. It runs in the family because his sister ended her high school career as the all-time leading scorer in her league, and played for two major universities.
YOU GUYS HAVE TO WATCH THE 2016 DUNK CONTEST, ITS THE BEST OF ALLTIME IN MY OPINION PLZ
The hitting the backboard thing in the first round was purely coincidence. You can dunk the ball in whatever manner you want.
Back in the day the stars used to participate in this like Jordan, Kobe, Vince Carter, etc. Over time it became an event that the stars didn't want to be bothered with. So now you just have guys who are just at varying levels of experience . Some may not even be guys who actually get playing time, but are just really good at dunking.
They only mentioned the backboard because it’s an added move and makes it slightly more difficult. Any player in the NBA is eligible for the dunk contest, however, the star players want to rest and prevent injury especially if they have playoff aspirations. I don’t know if he plays other sports but his dad was also a dunker so he definitely has a basketball upbringing. And if you think he didn’t look the part being under 6’2”, you should hear him talk. Deep southern accent lol, sounds country. If you like basketball do yourself a favor and watch the Denver Nuggets, especially Nikola Jokic. Put your money on him getting another MVP award and the team going all the way sooner rather than later lol!
NBA G League is the NBA developmental league. At any given time, NBA teams can sign players from this league to fill any open roster spots due to injuries, players being released, player buyouts after a trade, etc etc. Players from the G league can be signed for any duration, from just a few games, to the remainder of the season. It's not uncommon to hear a player signed for 4 games, or 10 games, or 12 games.
Mac became very well known in high school for his dunking and breaking all the Virginia records. His mixtape from high school is insane. He's also barely over 6 ft compared to these other guys that are three or four inches taller
Superstars used to do the dunk contest but they don't anymore cuz they don't wanna lose and get embarrassed
Mike’s face at 18:25 😂
Someone get them to react to the 2016 dunk contest
Mac has been a UA-cam dunking legend for years
Mac Mcclung Crazy level dunks goat dunker 💯👏🏻💥🏀🔥
There’s no requirement that participants be rookies. The contest is technically open to any NBA player. Usually older players don’t participate much these days. Most participants are in their first 4-5 seasons, so early 20’s. Back in the earlier days of the contest (1980’s) more established players like Jordan and Dominique Wilkins were still doing it into their late 20’s/early 30’s
I think i read somewhere that allen iverson used to be a football varsity in highschool but ended up being the 1st draft pick in 1996 nba draft..monster
In the NBA, normal game sequence show-boating would be either dunking on an opponent (standard dunk usually nothing flashy) or breaking your opponents ankles with your dribbling and handling skills. Doing "Dunk Contest" like dunks only really happens during a regular game when a team has a comfortable lead and or its towards the end of the game and theres little risk of losing the game.
Feels crazy to know that Mac is from my neck of the woods. We're so small that it's rare to see people get national notoriety.
2016 dunk contest was the best! Please react to that one
And the football player who jumped really high was DK Metcalf of Seattle Seahawks, that jump was edited for a commercial though lol 😂
Siakim had the big camera for a throwback to when Shaq had one like it at the 01 contest
This is like watching aliens learn about earth if they never knew it existed 🤣🤣I had to stop watching
You should react to Mac McClung’s high school dunk mixtapes. He’s from the county next door (gate city was a huge rival and thank god I graduated 7-8 years ago not having to play against him) and a local phenom. He’s the best basketball player to come out of this tiny coal region of Virginia by quite a bit. The area usually produces occasional high level college/NFL players over the years so it’s great he’s coming up.
You should watch Shaq's reactions to the dunks which is about a 3-minute video on the Bleacher Report. It's pretty funny.
Max shut that contest down man. You could check out his highlights from big school, guy was an internet celeb
Scoring is completely subjective but they're generally looking for impressive athleticism, just something that makes you go 'Wow'. Creativity is has become a big part of it and props are sometimes used because there's so many impressive dunks that have been done before, thus making them a little less impressive, unless there's some kind of new twist to it.
Actually, hitting the backboard isn't required...it made that particular dunk more difficult.
Other people have mentioned it, but they don't have to hit the backboard. It does increase the difficulty of a lot of dunks and add originality.
You were right when you summed it up with chaos. Just a fun show.
Mac is only 6'2 and has crazy hops lol.
Every video one of those 3 guys tries to explain something to the other 2, and it's like "the blind leading the blind".
Yeah Daz , I think I read something like that somewhere, and his son has played 5 seasons in the NFL, I swear I saw it somewhere too.
- You don’t have to utilize the backboard on dunks, it only increases the difficulty of the dunk (which is usually rewarded by the judges depending)
- It’s ok to travel in the dunk contest which is why you see a lot of players holding the ball
- The player who did it the “arm in the rim” dunks wasn’t impressive because 1) it was done before like 25 years ago 2) it’s very common that NBA players do that dunk (sometimes in game lol)
- Orginality, difficulty, and execution (you typically lose points if you don’t make the dunk on your first attempt) is what the Dunk contest is graded on.
- Formerly, the Dunk Contest use to have more notable players like MJ, Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant, and Dominique Wilkins but with how the NBA is, a lot of players decline the offer to do it. Many of these players are under 25-26 years old. But they aren’t all necessarily rookies.
Congrats to McClung too.
In the US most popular sports for boys in school to play American Football, Baseball, Basketball and Hockey while girls mostly play soccer, tennis, and softball. Usually we try to play multiple sports but it’s very difficult to make the team in all of them.
Points are chaos .
mac was known for his crazy dunks in high school
You don't have to hit the backboard. It's about the dunk difficulty.
Guys.....remember.....the final dunk!
McClung was still spinning even after the dunk completed.
That is a legit 720 degrees or very very close to it.
The kid is special.
points are based on level of difficulty. they also consider if u get it on the 1st try for the hype factor
Lol, he does look like a hockey player.
It’s so awesome you guys give such great reactions to things you know little about. The haters will always be there. Great vid per usual Blokes. And remember, Who wants to watch reaction content from someone who has already seen the vid or knows about it already??? Great work from @ComPODres UA-cam channel.
Mac has made $106,000 total salary so far in his NBA career. He made $100,000 for winning this contest
react to the 2016 dunk contest, the greatest ever
The announcer meant that if youre going to try and tap on the glass, you need to hit it to get the full 50. It's pretty free form. All about creativity, showmanship, and athleticism.
They're not all rookies, McClung just signed right before the dunk contest because he is known as one of the best dunkers. big names typically never do the dunk contest. Not since the early 2000s.
Karl Malone's kid played 5 seasons in the NFL but is now retired.
It's scored like skateboarding, gymnastics, or diving.
He has a very unusually high vertical leap. His NBA profile says he's 6'2 " but I'd bet money he's more likely 6'0" maybe 6'1".
I believe McClung is only about 6'1. He is from the G-League and just got picked up by the Philadelphia 76ers. He had a brief stint with Lakers but didn't get much h playing time. Went back to the G League. Philly picked him up recently but has only played in a few games. He put his name on the map with this dunk contest. The first G-Leaguer to win. Any NBA player can enter the contest, rookie or veteran.
Any NBA player can sign up and you can do ANY dunk, as long as it go's in before time runs out
A lot of these guys are over 6 ft 6 in. McClung is listed at 6ft 2 in and that might be stretching it. Dave, this is not a set up. Seriously, there is a guy who you look like. His name is D.J. LeMahieu and he plays for the NY Yankees. Look at pics of him with and without his baseball cap on.
Lol you don't have to hit the backboard
It's mostly the young players who enter the dunk contest because the star players are too scared of losing to enter lol
Everybody in the NBA can participate in the Dunk contest. More established players just rarely participate in the event and McClung just happened to sign a 10day contract or something with an NBA team coming from the G-League.
Also: Points are awarded for originality, difficulty, style and on how iconic the dunk may be. You don't have to touch the backboard and there is no rigid scoring system. It is much more the temperature in the room so to speak that performances are rated by.
Why would you have to hit the backboard 🤣
Superstars don't compete in the dunk contest anymore. Mostly because they're afraid of getting hurt and there's not really any incentive for them to do it.
Not sure if you guys reacted to Jordan Kilganon but he has some nice dunks too
You don’t have to hit the backboard, but hitting the backboard after you catch the ball and throwing it off the backboard are two different things
You guys should react to the 2016 Dunk Contest, it was arguably the best of all time
His nba/g-league is 106,000$ and won 100,000$ for winning the dunk contest
He's 6'1" guys and the last dunk was a 540. And by the way Mac was the only one to tap the backboard.
The judging is sort of like figure skating judging it's all about styles and difficulty and athleticism, creativity.
7:10
No. You don’t HAVE to hit the backboard lol.
That video you are referring of the football player jumping super high was altered.
Check out best dunk contest dunks off all time.
I think if you saw highlights of Mac McClung before this Dunk Contest, you wouldn’t be surprised that he won. 100%
If you hit the backboard you get free meatballs.
Keep in mind NBA rims are 10 ft where your average park is 8 ft and most csy even touch those
Mac maclung just signed with Philly he’s just now signed with a legit nba team everyone else are already in a team and not all rookies
The “Russian judge” Karl Malone messing the points up.
Mac just got signed into the league but only temporarily. He's the only one that's not in the league. He played in the G League which is just under the NBA and was the MVP
For context for you guys, imagine 3 of these players play in the Premier League, and McClung plays in the Championship or League 1
The 76ers?
@@jrr5492 he has been playing for the 76ers G league affiliate
Big stars usually opt out of the dunk contest which leaves the door open for younger players. It’s not like the days of Michael Jordan when the best dunkers usually participated.
3 point contest next?
Let’s get Dave on a court. We need this
Need to watch Macs high school highlights
Vince Carter and Jason Richardson where the best I've seen
No any nba players can be in the Slam Dunk but the stars usually be scares
You dont have to hit the backboard, there's no real rules it's just dunk the ball the coolest way you can
mac mcclung is very small compared to the others in the dunk contest but he is 6'2"
please watch the 2016 dunk contest! best dunk contest in recent history. it’s a better representation of what a dunk contest can be.
He got $100k for winning, almost as much as his career earnings of $106k.Good night for him
