Note: I do sometimes show footage of the Bottom of the Well while referring to the Shadow Temple. This is just for the sake of aesthetics in the video. Also the Dark Horse books claim that the Shadow Temple, Royal Family's Tomb, and Bottom of the Well are all connected underground. We just don't see their connection in-game. Just wanted to clarify that. I swear Ik the difference between the two places 😂

Actually, in the original OoT, if you get the map for the Bottom of the Well and then go and get the map for the Shadow Temple, you can see a little bit of the well map as a part of one of the floors of the temple. Just some remnant evidence of the connection.

Really went the full nine yards in making the creepy, unsettling vibes here. Unlike the botw version of the sheikah, OOT 's version has always had an undercurrent of darkness and a hell of a lot of skeletons in its closet. I had always thought there was something off about the stones and their purpose, but you went so much grimmer with that idea lol

I like elements of both theories. There is also the theory that the temple was designed for training, rather than containment. I can honestly see all three. The Sheikah were likely spying with the stones, and had gathered elements of evil into the temple, then why not use evil to train against evil.

I wonder if the temple itself was less an active site and more a kind of "celebration" or memory of the terrible acts done in a previous age. After all, it still acts as the place that the Sage of Shadow channels their power through, so it needs to match the element of Shadow.

With the way impa acts I don't agree that the Sheikah were evil, they did keep an eye on people but they wouldn't kill unless the Royal family intended it or impa. I think the dark interlopers played a role in this , they were the ones that took no chances but when the Royal family discovered what the Sheikah were doing at the shadow temple they demanded to shut down the operation. Impa followed the orders like a loyal dog, which caused some Sheikah to leave the tribe. Including bongo

I've actually been a proponent of this theory for years, but I think it goes back to _before_ the Sheikah were allied with the Royal Family.
I think it goes back to the Dark Interlopers, who eventually became the Twili. The Twili are odd, because they possess both Sheikah and Gerudo iconography, so it's implied they're the progeny of both races combined. This suggests that both were allied in the efforts to attain the Triforce that the Light Spirit told Link about - which would make sense, as throughout OoT, the Sheikah and the Gerudo both use similar magic, to the point that a relic of each race is needed to beat the Temple of the other.
I think both races go back before even Hyrule - that they're the descendants of the ancient citzens of Termina that built the Stone Tower: the Garo. It's a long story, but the short version is that there are numerous portals connecting Hyrule and Termina; one of which is above Stone Tower (through which you pass when the Tower is inverted to fight Twinmold) that the people went through to reach "the land of the gods": Hyrule.
Again, long story short, they separated into two races: the people of the Sun, or Gerudo, and the people of the Moon, or Sheikah. At the very least, we know that the Sheikah existed in Termina due to the Mask of Truth, Lens of Truth, and Gossip Stones throughout the land. There are many similarities between Sheikah and Garo, three of which are how they fight, btheir weaponry, and the fact they're ninjas.
I could go on and on lol But the main point, is that at some point in time the Sheikah spied on Hyrule via the Mask of Truth, Lens of Truth, and Gossip Stones, then eventually swore fealty to Hyrule like the other races: probably, like the other races, right after the Hyrulean Civil War, with the Gerudo being the last as seen in OoT. Anywho, I think some of the Sheikah were still allied with the Gerudo - namely with Ganondorf and Twinrova - and they allied to betray Hyrule right before Twilight Princess and THAT was the Interloper event.

I think the Shadow Temple was used during the Interloper War mentioned in Twilight Princess, which is implied to be the same conflict as the Triforce Wars mentioned in A Link Between Worlds. Those wars were certainly fueled by greed, and involved a lot of bloodshed. So it makes sense that inside the Shadow Temple there is an inscription saying "here lies Hyrule's history of greed and bloodshed."

I honestly think both theories are the truth in ocarina of time, when I played through it as a child I always felt that it was especially with how scared other races seemed to be of hylians, secluded (under surveillance), and it makes sense how the hylians won the war and not all powerful other races, hylians are just human after all. But if they used these tactics? Then it would make sense how hylians would win a very physical war for power. I don’t feel like they’re much better than Ganondorf to be honest. They were consciously made decisions by those in power, both the king and the queen and that will always be on their hands. I felt like breath of the wild was the perfect continuation of the story in ocarina of time, whilst you can hide your own wrongs, it’ll still come back to haunt you… karma so to speak, the whole castle is in ruins, and most of the hylian race was killed, but not the other races. I always felt like that wasn’t a coincidence and a very deliberate thing. But It would also make sense if Nintendo decided not to go down that route years after ocarina of time, seems like they now want to make the royal family good guys again instead of both sides being guilty of the same brutality to fit modern society and attract the mainstream audience. I also highly doubt they would want to make hylia a morally grey character after all. I also felt like proof of her actually being morally gray being how the gerudo seemed to reject her, which points to the theory of the gerudo to some extent being aware of what’s going on since they did have ties to the lens of truth, and them being pretty good at being spies themselves, and again in breath of the wild they also having ties with the yoga clan. I always felt like that’s why the gerudo really were the outcasts throughout the series, whilst other races decided to surrender completely I feel like the gerudo to some extent never have and still fought to be able to be allowed to think for themselves to some degree.
I see hylia, Zelda and the royal family more so like I see princess bubble gum, a very, morally grey character or in some cases like bubblegum you could see them as the worst villains. Just like how sealing away another being even though the intention is good, sealing someone away with the intention for eternity and being happy about it, is not something I would necessarily see as a very good deed. It’s still torture. Just like what happened to the interlopers. And the shadow temple. Even though the kingdom is supposed to be holy it’s still a kingdom and still used dirty tactics like every winning kingdom in history has. I feel like seeing the shadow temple as a training ground is very wishful thinking, although it could always be used to train and torture at the same time, there’s nowhere for the victims to escape. I always thought of the point of ocarina of time to be that there is no black and white, everyone is very morally grey, but when push comes to shove you do sometimes still have to pick a side. In the end the royal family was still better than ganondorf, but they were definitely questionable to me, which to me made the whole meeting with Zelda as an adult such a mixed bag, after I had seen the shadow temple. As prestige as the royal family tries to portray itself and heavily using zeldas beauty within that as well, that still doesn’t mean they’re necessarily people I’d wanna hang out with…. I feel like just like princess bubblegum in adventure time, even though it started out with good intentions, she still became a dictator, and till some degree I feel like the royal family has as well, But that’s just my theory.

Great video! it is also interesting to theorize about the existence of the gossip stones in Skyward Sword. Perhaps the Sheikah used them in the war against Demise to track enemy movements and activity, more in a military intelligence kind of way. They then could have been later repurposed for the uses that you suggested in the video. It is also interesting how they fly up into the sky when hit with an explosion. Perhaps this was some sort of self destruct mechanism to prevent information from falling into the wrong hands? potentially. The fact that they tell the time when hit normally could also be a front, a fake purpose, which lends further support to your theory.

I don't see much evidence for the first theory. But the second theory lines up with other evidence that the royal family has committed horrible acts across time. There's a reason the monks in botw say "a hero rises to right the wrongs of Hyrule" and not "the wrongs against Hyrule". There's no other place in the series where there are measures of good and evil that have to be balanced that I'm away of. Evil in Hyrule doesn't work like the Force in star wars

Why are the gossip stones still around ? If the shadow temple was used for torture why are their certain mechanisms placed in random spots like those giant blade things ? It looked more like an obstacle course if anything or was where the Sheikah use to train, but some Sheikah went behind impas back maybe bongo and used it to torture prisoners. If the bloody past of Hyrule was one the people lived through together, it’s no wonder that Ganondorf had a following!

It's a very good point. The explanation I could think of is the completely different design, so maybe the ones in OoT we're created later on for a different purpose. But Idk it's hard to explain a lot of things that existed before SS 😅

So this whole Big Brother, 1984, theory kind of reminded me of something very disturbing. Do any of you know about China's social credit score? For those who don't it's basically China's version of mass surveillance with redlining. It's a bit inevitable with an authoritarian government, even with a period of peace and prosperity. I was then reminded of China's civil war, that's still technically going on with the situation with Taiwan, but I degrease.
Bringing this back to Zelda, there was a civil war that broke out before OoT, what triggered it? Was it the critics of the Royal Family reaching their limits with their authoritarian rule and broke off? I mean when we start the game, there are several kingdoms and civilizations that seem to operate independently from each other, hinting at a decentralized government, that may have resulted from the civil war.
Link himself grew up off of the grid, living in the wood with no real government oversite, expect the all knowing tree. So the fact that he's using relics of an overseeing government of his quest is a bit ironic.

If I recall, the Civil War mentioned in OoT was a Unification War which saw the eventual unification of all (actually most) the races within Hyrule: The Hylians, The Goron, the Zora, and even the Gerudo, excluding only the Kokiri and even the Rito (yes, they existed back then if the Manga (which predates Wind Waker) is to be believed). If Majora's Mask is to be believed (why wouldn't it?) about Stalchildren, then the Stalchildren were fallen enemy soldiers who held a grudge against Hyrule, which is why they are absent 7 years later as the Kingdom of Hyrule fell to the Gerudo.

one problem with this theory: if the gossip stones were that powerful, they would of found out about ganondorf alot sooner (there ARE gossip stones in/near gerudo valley after all, as well as the ones near the castle itself, and the ones around kokiri forest. all of which ganondorf had to pass by for both getting to the castle, and poisoning the deku tree)

Because during the hyrulean civil war the Sheikah were wiped out. Also it's been stated that the dark interlopers at some point were Sheikah defectors. They were probably the ones that told the gerudo about the gossip stones, which is what led to complete genocide. They knew the Sheikah were the top tier protectors of hyrule, killing them would put a huge dent in their military. Making it easier to take the kingdom from the inside .

@@ronandread5141 except they weren't completely wiped out, thus as long as one good sheikah was still around *coughimpacough* there would be monitoring for the stones, and also your theory disproves how powerful the stones are, cause if they were that powerful they would of caught the defectors and of been ready
