  • I have wanted to do this video for a couple of months now, but refrained from doing so because I didn't know how. One half of me says there is nothing to this theory, while the other half says there is. To try and reconcile these opposing sentiments, I thought I would present my findings and let you guys determine whether there is anything there.

What's interesting to think about is that a huge part of Jung's works were about how these patterns and symbols repeat through human history, even independently of each other. Although Zelda's creators may have never read his works, the tri force may only prove what he set out to define.

    • @elio7610
      @elio7610 7 місяців тому +2

It is important to keep in mind that such patterns do not necessarily mean much at all. People see faces in things that are obviously not faces, people see sussy bakas that are clearly not among us. You could theorise that people subconsciously craft things to resemble faces even when they are not supposed to be a face but that does not explain how things that were not crafted by people can resemble faces and if things that were not crafted by people can resemble faces then the theory that people subconsciously craft things to resemble faces is unnecessary.
It is common to the number 1 as divine in some way, it is common to see the number 2 as divine in some way, it is common to see the number 3 as divine in some way... I don't really see how anything is standing out. "Small" numbers are generally gonna be more common than "big" numbers because they are just simpler and easier to think about. Unless there is an unexplained gap, such as (hypothetically) 8 being commonly divine while 7 is not, i really do not see anything to it.

Jung's theory of the collective unconscious is also similar to the Hinduist belief that we are all God having the experiences of individuality. The theory being that we actually all stem from one mind and one consciousness. Even the big bang and quantum theory suggests that everything comes from the singularity and is connected by invisible forces. It doesn't really surprise me that geniuses would tap into similar streams of knowledge. If you dig deep enough you could probably find instances of this everywhere.

In regards to why 3 is associated with the highest divine, Ive always subscribed to the idea thats its derivative of the fact that the triangle is the strongest geometric shape. Triangles have a solid foundation and evenly distribute any weight throughout its three sides. Humans have known this since prehistory, and so it makes sense to me that humans would make their strongest deities reflect this idea of trinity. The perfect representation of both strength and balance.

I like the theory that the Shadow Medallion is linked to Earth element as well as Death. In Ocarina of Time each Temple is aligned with its element ( fire temple is in a volcano, water temple is under lake Hylia, etc). Shadow temple is canonically the 4th temple you visit (4=death.) Also Where is the Shadow temple? Deep in the earth under Kakariko village, specifically underneath the graveyard.

  • @thepsyshyster8243

Expanding on Items #6 and #7 a little, the elements of Shadow and Earth are the two elements most associated with the undead in the series, with OoT's Shadow Temple, WW's Earth Temple and arguably MM's Ikana Canyon. The undead can be interpreted as the bridge between the material and immaterial realms.
    Brilliant video as always!

While this video is interesting, I don't think the triforce was created with the thought of their being a 4th. Most likely, it just looked cool. There was barely any story in the original zelda game. They add lore bit by bit in each game, and i doubt any of the story is meticulously planned out. Also, the shadow medallion triangle isn't upside down, as you can see at minute 13:30 when Link aquires it. Look at the dialoge box, and the image clearly shows the medallion in its correct orientation.

I love your use of the psychoanalytical lens to view Zelda lore. It's very insightful. I feel like Ganon, Ganondorf, and Demise, represent something other than a fourth piece of the Triforce, however.
Thr creation myth of Ocarina of time seems to allude to the Daoist creator deities. When Nayru creates heavenly law, Farore creates the people to uphold that law, and Din creates the physical earth they live on, this parallels the Daoist Trio and the three respective chi they created.
The chis are one of heaven, one of humans, and one of the earth. Gods and immortals inhabit heaven, humans walk the earth, and demons reside in the hell within or below the earth. Demise and his incarnations and followers clearly come from within the earth.
In eastern mythology, such demons are driven by evil desires like greed and a lust for power. They represent the worst actions people take against others through physical and emotional violence. This is why Ganon covets the power of the gods. He wants to use it to fulfill all his selfish desires.
Humans, who walk the realm between Heaven and Earth, can either ascend through enlightenment and giving up material desires or be cast down to hell by giving in to their vices and inflicting evil on others.
Of course this is just the basics of eastern mythology and philosophy but its a good basis to start with.
    Keep the awesome videos coming!

I always thought the 4 diety was the Goddess of Time. Represented by purple/shadow in the four swords. Aswell the three prime colors red, blue green mixed together makes white with its opposite being the shadow black. Or it can be the time Goddess that break and reunites the timelines. Each timeline has a victory Gannon fallen time line Zelda wisdom going back in time useing wisdom to prevail and Link courage to forge a new path. The unified timeline has the dark detite statue now underneath Hyrule.

As to who the 4th goddess is, I always thought it was Hylia herself. She's a diety that gave up immortality to create a cycle of rebirth through time in Hyrule whereas Din, Nayru, and Farore kept their immunity and left the world behind. Further evidence that Hylia is the 4th goddess of time being the time gate in Skyward Sword is a key plot point in Hylia's schemes to set up a new hero to slay Demise and the evils of his demons after her first chosen fell in the ancient war.

A while ago I was designing a TTRPG for the Legend of Zelda, and I had a feeling the shadow medallion and the shield's 4th piece was something of a shadow-piece representing a 4th power but I could never think of an actual reason for it. I ended up running it as the Twilight symbol against the Triforce, but none of it strongly worked together. I love this theory and idea in comparison, keep up the good work!

This treads quite closely to my own personal take. Light being one supreme element represented in a tripartite goddess, becoming unity when taken together with Shadow. Where I differ is on the idea that the Shadow is inherently evil. Indeed in the Zelda series, the Seven Sages are only complete when the Sage of Shadow uses that very power to seal or destroy evil, not to support it. The Shadow Temple we see in OoT is indeed evil and corrupted by demons, but that's due to human error, the bad karma of the Sheikah's practice of torture and executions during the Hylian civil war boiling over. Instead I think some kind of Divine Error is responsible for the existence of evil, a gaffe in the dawn of Time if you will, regretted and paid for ever since by the responsible party, leaving an imprint on the physical world that appears as the evil "darkness" that tries to blot out light, as opposed to natural shadow which steps aside in its presence. We also find Jung himself goes on at length about the need in each individual to integrate, not reject, the Shadow part of self in order to achieve actualization.

I think you might find a channel called QuestWithAaron very interesting. He focuses solely on the Zelda series, specifically contrasting the English localization with a direct translation of the original Japanese text to point out not just how context is changed, but illustrate how entire concepts of the setting are altered. When it's laid out so plainly like that it's easy to see how the general western audience's perspective isn't just tinged by a difference in culture, but also how the original cultural context within the games are slightly disfigured to anyone who isn't playing in Japanese.
Which to be fair is expected! The localization team's priorities aren't in translating 1:1 as there is more that goes into making a foreign game palatable to an international audience than just the words they use, and trying to get the original cultural context across isn't really feasible if the player... wouldn't get it. QuestWithAaron's channel has helped me identify some of the weirdness in Zelda I never heard or saw anyone else articulate. That vibe of Zelda being familiar and foreign to a Lord of the Rings loving, church-going little kid... because I'm not Japanese and I grew up with a different cultural frame of reference. Duh.
My favorites from him are his Twilight Princess videos.

On a tangent with that thought, in a way we could draw a bit of a parallel between the stories of Majora's Mask and Breath of the Wild since both have us calling upon the aid of four giants to help end a catastrophe (so long as you play along with the full story in BotW instead of using the open world format to skip ahead to the end, of course). Representatives of the four elements of Termina's regions standing tall over Clock Town as they stop the moon's fall. Champions of four main regions of Hyrule piloting massive mechs to weaken the Calamity beast that's rising up from Hyrule Castle.
Although... Wasn't there some sort of dreamscape peaceful meadow "inside the moon" before the boss fight against the incarnation of the spirit in the mask? In contrast with the chaos of the world the moon was about to crash into.

2 ingredients to help you bake:
1: On the Ganon /Demise Thing. Ganon/Aganim/Ganondorf is one of 3 characters stuck in a cycle of reincarnation, each tied to one of the triforces [and thus one of the Goddesses]. Link is the Triforce of Courage, Zelda is the Triforce of Wisdom and Ganon is the Triforce of Power.
2: Related to the Kabbalah 7 + 3 + 1 thing, there are often both a pattern of 3 and a pattern of 7 in Zelda games. The 3 Pendants representing the Triforce and Goddesses [usually in the normal/light world], and 7 medallions or crystals representing the 7 sages that are descended from the original sages that sealed Ganon / the Triforce [often themselves sealed in a dark world corrupted by Ganon]. The Master Sword in this case is the linking 4th/11th object. The 3 Goddess Medallions awaken/unlock the Master Sword, which unlocks the way to the Dark World [by defeating a manifestation/servant of Ganon] where the 7 Sages can be rescued.

The thing about zelda lore is there is too many missing pieces for any uniformly correct theory, but that is what makes it interesting. We do however have references to 7 gods/goddesses in the lore.
Primordial chaos (unification of light and dark/Ether) -The Fierce Deity
    Light -Hylia (Zelda, Hylians, etc.)
Dark -Demise (Ganon, Ganondorf, Moblins, etc.)
Fire - Din (Eldin the fairy. Gorons, Gerudos)
Water - Nayru (Lanayru the fairy. Zora, Unnamed people represented by ruins)
Wind - Farore (Faron the fairy, kokiri/koroks. Dekus)
Earth - ??? (Ordona the fairy, Undead, Shiekah)
The Rito though deriving from the Zora seem to no longer represent Nayru but potentially Farore.

  • @Chino429
    @Chino429 6 місяців тому +3

I believe in the Tetraforce theory (although i think it would still be called a Triforce, because the name comes from the Triangle shape, as we had the Triforce of Wisdom and Power before the Triforce of Courage was even introduced). Because like you said it's impossible to know what the developers were thinking or what they got inspired by, i prefer to look in the games themselves to provide theories. The ones you gave are a big part of that, with the shield and shadow medallion. But if you look across the games, the number 4 is represented just as much or even more than the number 3, and a lot of them have one separated from the rest, just like your theory. Three incarnations of the Four Sword, 4 guardian beasts, 4 pieces needed to open the door of time where 1 is different from the other 3, 4 pieces of the Fused shadow where one is separated from the others, 4 pieces of the mirror of Twilight where one is separated from the others, 4 Light Spirits and provinces, where one is separated from the others, 4 Giants in the 4 regions of Termina, and so on.
Theres multiple instances of other powers besides the golden goddesses as well. Sure we have the beings like the Deku Tree and Lord Jabu Jabu who are referred to as deities, and may very well be, but they seem to be what we might think of as "Lesser" deities. None of them give off the vibe as being able to do things as grand as creating the world or flooding the world like the golden godesses do. But there are others. The horned god you mentioned, Hylia, Majora, whoever is in the Fierce Deity Mask, the Sand Goddess from OoT, etc. Not saying any of them are definitively the fourth, but just using that to describe the idea that a 4th could exist.
That leaves figuring out what the final piece could represent. We already know Power, Wisdom, and Courage that have been front and center for most of the series, but there is another concept that is in way more games than not: Time. Games like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are fully centered around time travel mechanics. Skyward Sword has the character visiting the distant past and returning to the present. Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild have their entire stories revolving around past, present, and future, between Link and Zelda being trapped in time for 100 years, Zelda going back in time, the Botw story starting 10000 years ago, etc. Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages which not only have time periods in the title, also controls the passage of seasons and time with the Rod and Harp. Wind Waker shows Hyrule Castle frozen completely in time. Phantom Hourglass is another timekeeping object. Age of Calamity has time travel. In Zelda 2, one of the earlier Zeldas is frozen in time asleep. And so on. So i posit that the fourth piece would be time.
Who then is the most likely candidate for the deity of the 4th piece? I say its Hylia herself. We know there is a goddess of time out there, as both Zelda and various Termina residents mention her. Even before Zelda was revealed as an incarnation of Hylia, the Hylians and in particular the royal family have long had ties to her. They are the keepers of the Ocarina of Time and the Temple of Time. As her protected race, she is associated to them and Tima by default. The Master sword which was the Goddess sword given by Hylia gives Link the ability to teavel through times in multiple games. The time stones and the time gate in Skyward sword are associated with her, and the Sheikah are referred to as servants of Hylia, and in at least two games they are responsible for technology/magic pertaining to Time. What's best about this is that Time actually fits into your theory of the 4th piece possibly representing Death or Earth; death is what happens with the passage of time. All beings age and die. And Earth, much more than the other three elements, is much more associated with time, through the seasons. In addition, it ties into the mechanic of resurrection and reincarnation which is so prevalent throught the games; controlling, preventing, or thwarting death across the passage of time. It also helps with the huge influence of music throughout the series, which cant exist without Time. It also explains the presence of the inverted Triforce on Demise's sword, as the dark counterpart to Hylia. A lot of people claim that Hylia isn't on the level of the other 3 Goddesses because she was entrusted with the Triforce, so they think of her as a servant. I do not subscribe to that train of thought. Entrust doesn't by default mean command or force. She could have offered or chosen of her own free will to stay on earth and maintain the triforce to keep it safe, becoming the separated 4th entity while the others ascended. Which would then be why the fourth light spirit in Twilight Princess is separated from the other 3, much like Hylia is. This fits even further when you realize the Temple of Time is the gateway to the Sacred Realm in 3 different games.
Which then brings us to the question, who is the keeper of the Triforce of Time? Demise, Hylia, and the Champion are tied into a cycle of reincarnation that pits them with the other 3 pieces of the Triforce, with Ganon, Zelda, and Link being born over and over again in the same role. But there is someone else that appears as well; Impa. As someone who contributed heavily to Demise's demise (hehe), its not a stretch to think she would be included in his curse. She has been there since the beginning, both literally as the Old Woman in the original Legend of Zelda, as well as in universe in Skyward Sword, as well as The adventure Of Link, Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, a Link between Worlds, both Oracle Games, Age of Calamity and Hyrule Warriors, and although its not her directly, Impaz in Twilight Princess is thought to be a reincarnation of her, as well as looking almost identical to her TotK appearance, and was originally known as Old Man Impa in development when she was gonna be a dude. More importantly, her appearances coincide with almost all of the games i listed before that have a huge focus or influence on Time. She is also regularly the leader of the Sheikah and Kakariko, which are the inventors of so many different technologies that feature time or outright time travel, as well as typically associated with Death, the Shadow Temple, Earth, and the color purple. Much the same way as Hylia protected and guided the humans and provided them the Goddess Sword, Impa protects Zelda and either directly or indirectly guides Link and provides him directly or indirectly with a ton of tools that he needs, like the Lens of Truth, the Sheikah slate, the Dominion Rod, or simply showing him where the sleeping Zelda was in AoL.
It is interesting to note that many of the times that Zelda or her family use magic, it is through channeling the powers the blood of the goddess gave them, vs using the Triforce of Wisdom's power all the time. In Minish Cap, Zelda is the host of the Light Force that Vaati wants, whose power is independent of her Triforce of Wisdom. And in the Oracle Games, she is the Oracle of Hope, completely independent of Nayru, her usual associated goddess, instead either standing on her own, or more likely, a representative of a 4th goddess, which we now know is Hylia as she is her reincarnation. That would be the reason that Impa has a lot of association with Time, if she was the keeper of the final piece which originated with Hylia as the Goddess of Time, but doesnt have the innate light magic that Zelda and her family get as being reincarnations of the goddess.
Finally, my smoking gun: Zelda's name in Wind Waker is Tetra. Boom :D

You pronounced the names of the parts of the cabalist Supernal Triad almost perfectly. It was impressively accurate.
Also, regarding Da'at. Chokma usually means wisdom, Bina usually means either understanding, insight, or intelligence, and Kether means crown. Da'at is translated to either awareness, knowledge, or wisdom. So you can interpret this to mean that you need wisdom, insight, and knowledge to bear the crown (be either a proper king or even wield omnipotent divine power)
Also the Forbidden Fruit- the Fruit of Knowledge is the Fruit of Da'at. So the fourth element is Forbidden.

The point of Tool’s song “Lateralus” is that fundamental patterns are inherent to natural design including human nature, and when we design we include them fortuitously anyway so it’s a waste of effort to try too hard to include them. It’s also ironic since almost everything in that song is carefully crafted.

When I was listening to the part about the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, it struck me that there was more resemblance to Zelda lore than just the triad.
Three vessels could contain the divine light, and the other seven shattered and filled the material world. In Zelda, there's the three Golden Goddesses in the sacred realm and the Seven Sages in the material world, Hyrule. These sages always reoccur as a constant in the world and they are always led by a Sage of Light. Furthermore, these Sages are always responsible for controlling access to the Sacred Realm, further tying the 7 Sages to the 3 Goddesses.
Bonus theory: At the end of Skyward Sword, Demise is sealed inside the Master Sword. If Demise does represent Da'at, perhaps this is why pulling the Master Sword from the pedestal opens the Sacred Realm in Ocarina of Time.

Just wanted to add something a little interesting that I noticed, thanks to what you've presented here. And before I get into the tl;dr part, I just wanted to say that your video was quite enlightening and interesting. I had noticed that the LoZ franchise had a notable feminine streak about it, but your observations provide a noteworthy amount of extra evidence to this trend. Fun fact: if you include Zelda as the Sage of Time in OoT, the majority of the Sages are notably women (Saria, Ruto, Impa, and Nabooru vs Rauru and Darunia.) And all of the Sages are women in Link to the Past, presenting a wholly feminine spiritual body for all of Hyrule.
Based on what story elements we see with the Triforce pieces, we can also prescribe each of the Triforce pieces to a specific generalization of morality (AKA Good, Neutrality, and Evil.) Ganondorf/Ganon/Demise will often acquire the top piece of the Triforce (AKA the Triforce of Power) and is commonly associated with Evil. Link will usually acquire and represent the Triforce of Courage (the bottom-right piece,) and acts as the force of Good to oppose said Evil.
And that leaves the bottom-left piece of the Triforce, the Triforce of Wisdom which is commonly wielded by Zelda. So, what does this piece of the Triforce represent?
While Zelda of Hyrule often will side with Link (and hence, Good,) throughout most of the games' storylines, we can't discard the fact that she can potentially aid the opposite. In Link Between Worlds, Princess Hilda (the Lorulian counterpart to Hyrule's Zelda) very specifically joins forces with her realm's equivalent of Ganondorf (Yuga.) Yuga notably attains the Triforce of Power (AKA the "Evil" Triforce piece) rather early on, and Hilda attempts to utilize Yuga to use Hyrule's Triforce to save the kingdom of Lorule. While she is ultimately betrayed by Yuga, Hilda still represents a rather interesting conundrum to just what the Triforce of Wisdom represents.
Did Hilda, representing her realm's bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, know that Yuga's inevitable betrayal was necessary to Lorule's salvation? A notable counterpoint is brought up in a recent Zeltik video, wherein he points out that each of these three characters' counterparts lack the traits commonly associated with the classic Hyrule Trio (notably, at this point in his Zelda Storyline Tier List here: ua-cam.com/video/a6qotH8SSPg/v-deo.htmlsi=jBAXknZQL4gLGwJW&t=1842). Zeltik notably points out that he Lorulian Trio lacks the traits of their Hyrulian counterparts ("Hilda is a fool, Ravio is a fool, and Yuga lacks power.)
Still, it raises a question as to whether the Triforce of Wisdom is, necessarily, aligned with the moral ideal of Good. In many Eastern religions, the ideal of a Good, Evil, and a third Neutral force is a bit more prevalent than in most Western religions. Coinciding with a point you made in your video, it's unlikely these parallels were wholly intentional, but the connection is hard to deny in this case.
One noteworthy example (in Skyward Sword) is the goddess Hylia (whom Princess Zelda is directly related to by blood,) who uses the Triforce to wish the Hylians into a kingdom in the sky to save them from Demise and his unrelenting Demon Tribe hordes (who, as you pointed out, arose from the earth of Hyrule itself.) Yet, she chooses not to provide such salvation to the Kikwi, Parella, Gorons, and Mogma, who are now forced to remain on the surface to contend with Demise's demon tribe of Bokoblins, Moblins, and other beasts of Evil. And just which creature happens to separate the "inverted Triforce piece" (representing the land/earth/Evil in your hypothesis) and the whole Triforce/Sacred Realm/Good on the Hylian Shield in OoT? Why, it's a Loftwing, a creature that inhabits the sky realms of Skyward Sword, specifically, and is said, in game, to represent a symbol of divine protection from the goddess Hylia.
While Hylia's actions do ultimately lead to a greater Good over Evil, one can't deny that leaving the vast majority to fester in a world mostly overrun by Evil creatures isn't wholly a Good act either. By the time the Link of Skyward Sword has a chance to interact with these other races, they are all either dead (and only resurrected by manipulating time for the Ancient Robots) or in hiding from the swaths of Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, and other creatures that are under Demise's control. They were not provided the same salvation that was granted to the Hylians, and it shows.

There is a second force also represented as a golden triangle; the light force. It is probable the fourth triangle on the hylian shield is the light force, it's disappearence reflecting how it's existence is forgotten. What if I blew your mind by suggesting that not only is there a fourth triforce (tetraforce) piece, but that the three pieces we all know and love from all the games is actually the wrong three? What if I implied that the triforce as we know it actually included the fourth piece all along, in lieu of one of the three it is meant to include?
I have always been intrigued by the subtle difference between the three platonic virtues and the three pieces of the triforce (wisdom, courage and appetite; vs wisdom, courage and power). I always wrote this off in my head canon by attributing power with appetite as the natural object of desire toward which appetite strives. But what if power is the wrong interpretation for another reason altogether? What if the triforce of appetite has been missing this whole time and then heroes/villains have been assembling the triforce wrong every time, leading to this endless repetition throughout the ages, rather than ending in perfect divinity? To me, it would lend more legitimacy to the concept that Ganondorf is the vessel of one of the three, the vessel of the triforce "of power". As a champion of chaos/demise, wouldn't it make more sense that Ganondorf was not wielding one of the three pieces of perfect divinity, and was instead wielding the fourth, discarded piece representing corruption and materiality? Afterall, the three goddesses always seemed at odds with the trinity of the triforce as we know it; why would one of the three goddesses align with Ganon's evil when they have always been toted at three forces of good?
My theory, purely inspired by your excellent analysis, is that the ongoing struggle and the cycle of rebirth and reignition of this conflict between good and evil in Hyrule all stems from the corruption of the triforce by the improper third piece. Nothing could be more iconically human than to continue endlessly seeking pure divinity, never realizing that our inherent fundamental opposition to it will always prevent our attainment of that which we seek.

This is my dumb headcanon, but I always called the missing space the Triforce of Responsibility. In the games where the Triforce is involved, it usually involves each piece being separated, and it is the PLAYER'S job to reunite the Triforce at the climax of each story, and in your absence, the Triforce separates again. This is the Triforce that each player of the game has, and just like the Triforce illuminates on the back of each character's hand, the Triforce of Responsibility is on the back of YOUR hand, you just can't see it, because it's the hollow part. Instead of Din, Nayru, and Farore, it represents the goddess Hylia, whose efforts, time and again, bring the Triforce together again through reincarnation to establish new eras of peace for Hyrule.

I have a question that no one seems to be asking here, so let me do so.
Why are the goddesses 'good' and Demise 'evil'?
What makes them the justified entities in the entire drama that's being played out, when, from the very beginning, they are the infiltrators to the void?
Going back to the original story, the goddesses suddenly appeared one day, changed over the reality that was the void, and then peaced out. Never was there a consideration for whatever entity was there in this place, which we can now assume was Demise, or maybe a previous incarnation of himself, and never has it been stated that the goddesses worked with any other entity to form creation as we know it. They just did so, and ever since they have, it's been one calamity after another.
We know that the goddesses are not from this plan of existence since they left it, leaving the tri-force behind them, as well as Hylia to watch over it, but in thinking about it, if I broke into your home, rearranged your furniture, brought in some stranger and then told them to keep watch over the place without your consent, you'd be a little miffed. And that's literally what happened. So is Demise really the bad guy here?
If he, as a representative of the world that was before the world existed, is trying to unsettle the 'order' that the goddesses made, then the story becomes much more tragic, because its not a 'villain' attempted to overtake the world, its an a former sovereign attempting to reclaim the world as it was before it was invaded. And there's a lot of proof of this.
In Link to the Past, when Ganon takes control of the tri-force he transforms the spirit world into this supposedly nightmarish realm filled with monsters, but it's still a functional world. There are still places and entities within it going about their lives as normal, and in looking at it from that point, Link becomes the invader attempt to upset this balance. Ganon isn't even doing anything in the world as it is once it becomes as it does, he's just chilling out in his temple. It's only at the behest the 7 maidens that Link takes the Master Sword, a symbol of divine might, against him to kill him for the Tr-Force, but the Tri-Force is supposed to be neutral. It just grants the hearts desire of the one who touches it. Sure, we're told that Ganon is evil, but whose perspective is right if blood has to be shed either way to claim dominance over the world? Obviously, if they wanted to, the goddess could come down and put a stop to this, but they don't. Instead, they come off as twisted spectators to a brutal bloodbath that know that this cycle is never-ending. And we know that because we have the multiple timelines of the series.
Following this, look at something else that happens in the Zelda series.
Why does Link almost always have a flirtation with corruption. Ganon often utilizes Dark Link as a challenge for Link, but why? To say that Link has darkness inside of him that must be bested. That's interesting, because in LttP we know that Link is so pure hearted that entering into a world filled with Darkness and Chaos literally renders him powerless to do anything. He has to get a sacred object to be able to manifest into a form able to instigate violence in a world of darkness. Ironically enough, this happens with him in the Shadow Lands in Twilight Princess, thought this time he becomes a wolf. Also, when given power directly by another deity of sorts, this time Majora in Majora's Mask, Link becomes a literally fierce deity. This makes it clear then that Link, when using power of some deific sort, transforms into a creature that reflects who he is deep inside. But, why do we assume that he's a virtuous 'hero'?
Because everyone says that he's the hero?
But why is he the hero?
Because he always fights against the forces of Ganon and chaos?
But is that by choice, or circumstance?
In Twilight Princess, there's a warning to Link about not fooling around with the power of some Crown or another, because it could corrupt him, and we see this happen, sorta, but we never get an opinion from Link about what he thinks of all this. He just wakes up one day, is literally told by Zelda, who is Hylia's reincarnation, to go and fight evil and he does. Making it clear that he's more of a puppet of the forces of Order than a willing servant of the forces of the world.
It becomes very clear then that Link is set to fight because that's what other powers want, and its only because the forces of 'good' are in control that he fights for them, but what would happen if that was flipped on its head? What would happen if Link were Demise's champion? What would be the reason for him not being a 'hero' if he were fighting for the demons who were burned by the light of the goddesses and forced to take shelter in the darkness? And its not like it couldn't happen, after all, he does become a Fierce Deity when given power, and Zelda/Hylia has never had to reconcile with such a force before.
Also, ironically enough, The Fierce Deity has a single piece piece of the triforce on his armor next to a moon. Insetting, seeing as the Tri-Force has no bearing in Majora's world, and the moon is a symbol of darkness, night, and often chaos.

I think that the fource piece of the triforce is everything and everyone.
The godeses with the triforce created life, however the tetraforce, the material, could literally be that, it could be everyones material form, aspect, and the land it self. It created a vessel for life to be put into.
In that way it makes sense that people can use the triforce, because theyre a part of it, theyre the center.
In that way, it also explains why when people use the triforce they need a balance of the three atributes, because the piece in the middle is the one that is closer to all of the three pieces, hence it requieres balance between the three.

There aren't many times in the series that the pieces of the triforce are shown separately so I would also include those into the count personally but even without that, Zelda, as a child, has an inverted Triforce on her dress. The tetra piece can also be found on the opening scene of the classic "The Legend of Zelda". And lastly id like to point out the seprate piece on Fierce deity links breastplate. It is a super cool theory when you also think of the darker elements hiding this tetra piece.

There is more evidence that the "Tetraforce" may exist:
    • Twilight Princess has four "Spirits of Light", with all except one being named after the three Golden Godesses.
    • Mentions of "Goddess of time" and the ambiguous relation between Hylia and the three Golden Godesses.
    • A character in Wind Waker being inexplicably named "Tetra".
    • The Four Sword (mentioned in the video but not directly stated as evidence), it may not necessarily tie to the Triforce (or Tetraforce) but it is mysterious so it has potential connections.
It is also important to keep in mind that the first game (The Legend of Zelda) only had two Triforce pieces (Power and Wisdom) with the third (Courage) being absent until the second game. The term "Triforce" originally referred to any one of the "sacred triangles" and not the unified whole of all three. Admittedly, the legend that Hyrule was created by specifically three godesses was already established by the third game (A Link to the Past) but it has remained legend and not firm canon, there is still potential for a fourth goddess to fit in somehow (it does not necessarily contradict the legend, it could be that the legend just omitted mentioning the fourth, what role the fourth would have had is unclear).

What’s interesting to think about is how storytelling and world building rely on the both intentioned and unintentional. That is, writers set out to build a world, but such a world is often outside the ability of an author to truly instantiate. One of the pitfalls to developing good world building is when a writer tries to micromanage all the elements in that world, a feat that is outside the ability of any single human. That is all to say that just because the creators of legends of Zelda didn’t intend for their to be a fourth piece doesn’t mean that there is not. Your argument is incredibly strong and points to an unconscious tendency in writers who try to develop any story that utilizes trinity elements (as a product of their own socialization). The worst thing Zelda writers could do is try to deny this direction as it could have the unintended consequence of creating unforeseen contradictions that ruins a players suspension of disbelief

Although I've been deep into the fictional cosmologies of the Final Fantasy franchise this video on Zelda shows a very similar underlying intent behind the cosmologies of the two franchises. That intent being to structure human consciousness, which I believe is the intent behind all our various mythologies.
I think the ultimate metaphorical source at the bottom of the triforce's void is the concept of self awareness or in narrative language the concept of meta. I believe any truthful cosmology cannot represent the potential totality of human consciousness without addressing self awareness within its lore. I think you rightfully point out that there is a "higher being" that the void represents beyond Ganon, beyond Demise. As silly as this may sound I believe that "higher being" is meant to represent us, the audience, the player. The ones whose hidden hand perpetuates the longevity of the world through a desire to return, a desire that breeds the idea of immortality and, according to Zelda's cosmology, is the source of evil.
I know the use of meta in narrations can be eye rolled, but I honestly think the creators of Zelda and Final Fantasy have done a pretty good job with their cosmologies as to not make the concept cringe by respectfully "hiding" behind mystery.
I also think the way the Zelda franchise uses Ganon and specifically the Final Fantasy 7 sub franchise uses Sephiroth point to a shared self awareness that the cosmology of their stories is aware that there is a hidden player participating and perpetuating the conflicts within their games.
But why? Trying to incorporate the human consciousness aspect of self awareness as best as a non-conscious being like our many artistic media (games, music, movies, sculpture, illustration, etc) can best achieve like I mentioned already, but I think also as a cute wink to their origins in tabletop RPGs like D&D. One of the most charming aspects of tabletop RPGs as an artistic medium is how it narratively captures human self awareness in the explicit interactions and knowledge of the players willfully accepting story immersion while being perceptually aware of "God" (the DM/GM). I think Zelda's and FF's narratives attempt to subtly make their players aware that they are interacting with a game to celebrate the power of self awareness in a way that only games can uniquely do compared to other media.

Different chairs have different designs, people imagine things differently how the chair would looked like if you read a novel etc. and we can recognize it as a chair because we can sit on it.

I once read a theory over a decade ago about the Tetraforce belonging to the Goddess of Time, which gets referenced in Ocarina of Time on occasion, and I think in Majora's Mask too. The theory also associated the Spirit Temple's statue with the Goddess of Time, and I think that statue is referred to as the Goddess of the Sands at some point in Ocarina of Time. Sands can be associated with time with an hourglass and the expression "sands of time". This fourth goddess also holds the Triforce in her hand (the inner statue that leads to the wtiches). It's possible the Gerudo worshiped this fourth goddess, separated from the rest of Hyrule which only worshiped the three goddesses.
As for intent on the part of the developers, I think you're right that no such intention ever existed. I think that's obvious due to the timeline itself having no sensible structure to it. Nintendo was just making stuff up as they went along. In fact, the Triforce itself was probably only originally intended to have two parts, Power and Wisdom, and then only in the sequel was the third part conceptualized.
Also, the Shadow Medallion doesn't mean anything. It's just an opposite version of the Light Medallion which shows an upward-pointing triangle.

So here's a little bit of nuance from a long time Zelda lore fanatic. Based on the legends from ocarina of time and skyward sword there seems to be a leveling system for the gods in the Zelda universe. The three Golden Goddesses are on the top level being Gods who can create worlds and interact/travel between realms. Goddess Hylia, the Horned God and possibly Demise are on the next level being gods who can only interact with the world they live on. There could even be a level in between these and Demise in on this one. That could be the reason why Hylia couldn't kill demise but instead sealed him away, and she couldn't perfectly seal him either. They are still extremely powerful but they cannot create worlds. There are mentions of other gods like the God of Wind in wind waker so there is a possibility of other gods of the elements. These gods would possibly be on a level below Hylia and demise. There could be an evil god on the same level as the 3 Goddesses but we haven't been given any information on this being. It probably wouldn't be a stretch to say Demise wishes to become this god if there isn't one but must first perform a deed of such magnitude the 3 Goddesses take notice. As of the lore right now the only things the 3 Goddesses did for Hyrule was make it, create the Triforce, create Hylia to watch over it and (now possibly) choose a hero to defend the world. (Skyward sword kinda reckoned this by saying Hylia chose the hero and gave him the ability to reincarnate so not too sure anymore.) My point is, the Goddesses did these few things then left the world alone, if Demise wants to ascend to the next level he may believe he needs to become something that can destroy a creation created by these beings. But no one can say for sure without the creators verifying anything and I know they like to leave us to speculate about things.

The tri force is more of a container, assembled by the chosen three through actions. Strength, courage and wisdom exist together they all can be good or evil, if one rises so will the other. It’s through these actions and reactions that the stories are written and the universe expands.
In my opinion the part in the middle represents the game we’re playing while the outside is the rule book

In more metaphysical terms, I believe what unites Plato's Realm of Ideas and Material World is Energy in the form of a being's attention and intention or perception (Observer Effect = Wave / Particle).

An inverted triangle was used by early Greek philosophers and later by alchemists as the symbols for water and earth (with a horizontal line through it in the case of earth). Could be deduced that the "fourth triforce" represents Hylia and/or the world the goddesses created.

This was really fun to watch! Thanks for making it. I also really enjoyed your video about Majora's Mask. I wanted to add a few thoughts: I'm not necessarily making an argument that the Tetraforce Theory is "true" in terms of being consciously-held or planned by the developers; certainly, the idea that it just sort of happened synchronistically would be very much in line with Jung's thinking. That being said, I do think it's possible that at the very least, the developers are no strangers to all sorts of esoteric concepts and that Jungian theory might be among their interests. I noticed a very high density of names and symbols throughout the map in "Breath of the Wild" that appeared to be direct references to concepts from such varied sources as traditional Eastern spirituality (locations like Mt. Satori and The Nirvata Plateau, aka "Nirvana" Plateau). Also, there's a lot of symbolism in the Hateno region that seems to hint at alchemy; the reverse aging situation surrounding Purah at Hateno Tech lab was suggestive of the lore surrounding Fulcanelli, one of the most famous alchemists, and some of the location names in that area, such as Ovli Plain (reference to an egg) and Ash Swamp seem to suggest some of the different stages of alchemy. Zora's Domain made me think of the Wheel of Fortune card in the tarot (it's wheel-shaped, and just as a sphinx/cherub (a chimera) sits atop the wheel in that card, there's a lynel (also a chimera) atop the mountain near the city, who fires lightning arrows (very reminiscent of Zeus or Jupiter, and the Wheel of Fortune card is ruled by Jupiter if you look into tarot correspondences). The Four Divine Beasts seem to be obvious symbols related to the "Four Living Creatures" that are also depicted on that card as well as a few others, and also carry meanings as references to Hekhalot mysticism. Of course, there is also a set of similar beasts found in Chinese astrology. Lastly, it seemed to me that the entire map was arranged almost like a mandala or a labyrinth, with the culmination of the story taking place at its center. This reminded me of Jungian symbolism, too, perhaps suggesting a journey to the center of the Self. There are symbols all throughout the game world that also allude to the 12 Labors of Hercules. It was seeing all of that stuff in just one game that first got me interested in the overall subject of mythology as reflected throughout Zelda games, and your videos have been among the best and deepest sources that I have found which explore such ideas explicitly. They are so cool. Keep it up! Since you say you only got into Zelda recently, I don't know if you've explored Breath of the Wild yet, but if you do, maybe you will keep some of these references in mind. I bet someone like you would have a wonderful time exploring that world and seeing all of this (and certainly more) for yourself.

You can make the case that the devs didnt mean this intentionally, but still they did.
By taking inspiration and influence from religions it carried with then the theology associated with it, which is natural and therefore in my opinion canon

The triforce exists in the realm of ideas therefore when presented as a symbol it is 2 dimensional because it can not be represented in the material world. The fourth piece of the triforce exists in the material world therefore it can not be represented in the realm of ideas leaving it as a blank space. This explains why the fourth slot of the triforce is blank it can not be shown but it still exists, the three goddesses cast a shadow in their presence/existence in the symbol and their unified shadow creates a solid object in the middle of that blank space the fourth piece. So while looking like a blank space it can become psychical due to the laws of the world. The blank space is filled with shadow and isn't empty, It looks empty but it is filled with something.
This is my interpterion of the symbol. I don't theorize too often so feel free to tell me if my interpertation adds to anything or if I am being crazy.

Carl Jung (and his theory of the shadow) works really well symbolically placed with the trinity of Freuds (who he worked closely with) theory of the Id, ego and super ego. This may hint to spiritually being the eventual fusion of philosophy and study of psychology(both seemingly needed to adapt to life just hurting all the time). Art that explores these concepts the most efficiently seem to be the most appreciated by consumers (in my opinion) and that kind of brings a new meaning to eyes being the windows to the soul(sorry this video sparked both my autism and my adhd). The soul, whose for all intents and purposes, seem to exist with the goal of connectivity. All summarized by the generationally forgotten or number one rule in christianity, love and reverence for all things.

Thank you soo much for this video Max, it’s helping me piece together some esoteric concepts, and although I may need to watch it 3-4 more times my take on the “4” is…
    The Highest
    The Lowest
    The Masculine
    The Feminine
No mention of evil or chaos as those have their own sides.
    A square is Fair
4 sides are even and carry no visible deception.
    4 is complete
    3 and 5 are incomplete
An 8sided star would be the union of all the 4 Good and its 4 perversions uniting the 1 the 2 the 3 and 4 all in one.
We love your Zelda Videos !

Hi! Im still sitting through this video but wanted to comment that I love it so far, its hitting very much in a certain niche of philosophical study and my own current artistic studies of the Zelda universe.
I feel like ToTK provided us with a huge insight onto the "shadows" of Hyrule with the Horned Statue - we know there is an "opposite" to Hylia, but she somehow suppressed and attempted to sqnador the Horned God to a life as a statue, like her.
I also wonder if the Goddess is no longer active in Hyrule and only speaks through these statues /because/ of this entrapment of the Horned God - maybe she imprisoned herself to a life of holding him back - which would tie into why Zelda and all the children of her bloodline are so self sacrificial to Hyrule towards holding Ganondorf at bay.

They should make a Zelda: Tetraforce. You’re following clues to find it, including needing the Power, Wisdom, and Courage triforce pieces to reveal it’s location. In the end it turns out it doesn’t exist. It was just Ganondorf faking clues to get Link to bring the triforce to him.

Is that goddess statue at the end of the video that link and Zelda from skyward sword are standing on the same one in the ancient temple in botw and totk that gets toppled? If so, it goes to illustrate the mind blowing eons of time separating most Zelda games. I also wonder if the countless eons of time between when Gannon is actively a threat, is an incarnation of Link in existence, or does a rebirth of the hero figure Link only happen around the tone that an evil threat descends on Hyrule, suggesting the existence of an incarnation of the hero is a purposeful event designed to drive evil back into restaurants like Link's entire existence is a thoroughly calculated defense mechanism by Hyrule itself, like an ace in the hole or last resort secret weapon. One that the goddesses control and summon with the power of the triforce that's eternally bound to Link. I would love an answer to this unnecessarily complicated theory I just made up on the spot

In Physics, three of the four fundamental forces are explained by the Standard Model of Quantum Physics, which mainly explains particles and energy, while the final Fourth One, Gravity, is explained by General Theory of Relativity, with heavy focus on time and space; in other worlds, materiality. A triad against a 4th. Funny how the world is.

I'm not the biggest fan of Zelda, but every game in the series I've played had a minor thiem that I've only ever been able to refer to as the three that are, and one that's not.
For instance, the Light Spirits from Twilight Princess. The overarching objective is to save all THREE of them. But there are four entities with the same design, that all serve the same function. Yet for some reason, the first one you encounter doesn't consider itself a Light Spirit. It's not even that it's no longer in danger. The entity, and those around it, do not consider it a Light Spirit.
Then there are the goddesses. Din, Nayru, and Farore. None of these three are mentioned as having mortal children, but Zelda and her line has divine ancestry. Why is Hylia not among the other goddesses mentioned? Why is there this strange pattern of three beings that hold their mantal, and one that meets the criteria but isn't accepted as part of the group?

A very interesting video from you once more!
I think the answer to this question is rather dependent on how it is asked.
One could ask if there is a counterpart to the three goddesses, and their aspects and nature. A metaphysical sort of tetraforce regarding what the pieces of the triforce represent. As detailed in the video there is not an insignificant amount of evidence for that theory, intentional or not.
But at the same time, one could ask more concretely.
The triforce is, after all, for all its symbolic significance and magical power, also a relic. An object the goddesses left behind where each piece represents one of them. Is there a fourth piece to _the object_ that is the triforce?
Unless Demise chose to forge one like the goddesses did, one that we simply dont know of, I doubt it. But at the same time that could be a real cool plot point for a future title.
