FILMED 4-4-1975 at UCLA's PAULEY PAVILLION. A sold out paying crowd too. Also on the show were LES BROWN and his band -AMERICA-FLIP WILSON-ARETHA FRANKLIN. I was one of the basketball players that carried Mr. HOPE off-stage, what fun.
Is it me, or does there seem to be a sad loneliness in this world now that the Duke is gone. The likes of which we shall never see again. I never knew the man personally, but there was something about him, some thing that is long gone now, and not in my life time will there ever, ever be another like the late great John Wayne. God rest you in peace John. Some day i'd like to shake your hand in person. For the joy you brought to the world, through your films. RIP Mr Wayne.
I agree with you 100%. But you see it was more then just watching John's films, it was almost like you were there in person, that's the feeling i get when i watch John Wayne, he was such a gentle man, a kind man, and was never too proud to share a joke and just be him self. I can tell you, if there were more kind men like John Wayne in the world today, this world we live in would be a much better place.
My Grandfather had Bob Hope and John Wayne as neighbors, and Gramps coached a little league team that was sponsored by John Wayne. Mr. Wayne didn't just write a check, he would sometimes show up at the games to cheer the kids on! It was a different era, the era that brought us other heroes like Ronald Reagan. How sad that in America today we have so few celebs and fewer politicians who stand up for America.
So well said. Mr. Wayne pulling this demonstration out. My America has been given over to Globalism..Now, my President, Mr. Donald Trump is going to get us back on the map because he is like John Wayne...a Patriot. To hell with all haters of our Constitution and our Republic, now and forever. Thank you for this video>
@Rich Hartley I know this is some years late. Catching a glimpse of the democrats debate. No American flag shown. How disgusting it has become these days
Very funny and yet a very harmless sense of humor. No swearing, nothing obscene. Also actors of their generation spoke more audibly. And its a pity John Wayne was not on stage more often...
omg . two absolute legends in one place at the same time , you couldnt get much graeter star power than these two giants , an absolute joy and very funny
This was filmed 4-4-1975 at PAULEY PAVILION on the UCLA campus. I was one of the basketball players. It was really a cool gig, as there was a full 'paying" audience who saw full sets by ARETHA FRANKLIN-FLIP WILSON-AMERICA LES BROWN & of course Mr. Hope. Thanks for posting this video, brings back some memories.
I was a huge UCLA fan back in the day and without knowing any info on this clip I knew they were having fun at John Woodens expense. If it was on T.V. I probably watched this real time because these three were my dad's favorites and they would have had top priority over anything including an UCLA game.
I don't think the young people know who Stewart was. They barely know Hope. But I will bet they saw John Wayne and "dog." The most special thing I ever have done was put my two brothers on my shoulers at the same time so that they could see and listen to Bob Hope.. I was 12, it was 1969. I couldn't see him, and I truly felt that my shoulders were breaking, but it was important to me that at least my brothers would get to see his entire show. There were 10s of thousands of ppl there who for the most part couldnt see the show unless they had $10 to sit up high. We got in free to stand on the race track because we were 12 or under. Bob Hope!
Wayne and Hope were both good sports about their comedy, and both ribbed themselves as much as they ribbed their targets. Wayne's appearance at Harvard to accept his "Brass Balls " award is classic. He answered their insulting questions with funny responses, they applauded him roundly, and Wayne talked for a week about the good time he had.
most people never knew what a generous and funny man the duke was,, many Hollywood celebrities said he was the nicest person they ever met , and he was also an avid outdoors man befoe it became taboo in hollywood
It's too bad they never made a movie together. They did do another skit where Bob asked Duke if they could work on a film. Duke hesitated, saying he mostly makes westerns. When Bob explained that he has ridden horses, Duke replied, "But Bob, those are merry-go-round horses!"
God bless them both and their craft and their contributions to the world of acting, humor and just beimg decent humam beings. The world we live in now is truly lacking Now thst it's Fueled on th Tesrs of Liberals.
There was so much ham on that stage you could of served Easter dinner! - LOLOL No, but seriously, what a rare treat. Two classic legends on one stage, enough career history to make a Time-Life commercial! - LOLOL
But really, if I'd have been writing for them I'd be wealthy now! Actually when I grow up I want to be just like one of them.......,Oscar Levant! - LOLOL, LOLOL, LOLOL !
Those were the days when true comedians could be funny without resorting to being crude. John Wayne loved America and stood up for her so much that the mass murderer Joszef Stalin put a contract out on John Wayne.
You're not alone. I tried and tried to find a Duke Wayne calendar last December, but they were sold out eveywhere!!! It's not just people in the US that love Duke, he has "fans" all around the world. No other movie star who has been dead for over 30 years has the "fans" that Duke has, not Clark Gable, who was the "King of Hollywood" or anyone else! Duke stuck a chord with people all over the world, even Khruschev loved his movies that were pirated and dubbed in Russian!
Imagine conservatives invited to a college and the left didn't try to burn it down. Does anyone notice how happy all those students seem to be. What happened to us and out college institutions?
Great what Duke replied when asked if his hair was real.. Its real, its not mine but its real.. I am not certain that's an exact quote but very similar..
That's true. He also made jokes about his (perceived) limitations as an actor. If he'd made a few films as a baldy man I don't think anyone would have thought any less of him. Most bald actors have their fair share of female admirers. Look at Sean Connery.
Today, two patriotic, conservative celebrities (Do we still have two anymore?) would not be invited to any college campus I can think of; and, if they showed up, they would be treated very poorly, not unlike General Petraeus was in New York.

Legends like this we'll never see again, and the world's the poorer for it!
Hope funded terrorism in Palestine.
He was the best
My Aunt & Uncle lived on that farm. my aunt was the housekeeper/maid my uncle did odd stuff around the place. They loved the place.
John Wayne qui a bercé mon enfance restera à jamais le premier des géants dans mon cœur
The Duke was blessed with a great sense of humor; this clip is a day-brightener....
Rest In Peace, sir...
Two legends. Never will we see something like this again.

Both great men and both loved the troops in Vietnam. I saw Mr Hope in 1969 at Camp Eagle Vietnam...Miss them both dearly

You are so right.

Yes. The trick is to be clean and funny.

Excellent. Well worth watching. John Wayne and Bob Hope together in a good comedy sketch.
Yay Fairfax High!!!!
Theirs is a level of genuine and deserved celebrity that few if any of todays performers will ever reach.
There will never be another pair like John Wayne &
Bob Hope & they, were both great actors & comedians in,their own way.
This brings back so many fine memories that I am so glad that I had the time to see them again and again, that is fine for me!

You could expect no less from Mr. Wayne. He was they type, when he could manage in between jobs. Such a really TRUE American and humanitarian.

had to be early to mid 70's True Grit was made in 69 and Brannigan was made in73 or 75. Both were mentioned here.
I think it's John Woodens retirement at UCLA in 75. That's where it's at and about the right time from what I've read.
This is awesome.

I couldn’t believe how skinny Bob was ... no wonder he lived to 100 👍
I first read it as "LIl Wayne and Bob Hope Ham It Up". :D
Geez did he mug Steve Allen for those glasses ??!
He was playing the role of legendary coach John Wooden in the skit. That is why he had the glasses.
The fact that this skit was utilizing the audience by acknowledging names of other schools and faculty made this audience feel included.
