He was turned down for military service due to that so he and John ( Pappy ) Ford another great American produced patriotic movies and sold war Bonds. The movie "The High and the Mighty" is a FABULOUS movie, even though it's not a "western movie" and I love it!!! "Island in the Sky" is a really good movie also. Both of these movies were written by Ernest Gann, and he and William Wellman were GREAT FRIENDS who shared a common history from WW I, and a love of aviation!!!!

My own 'Pop', who passed away 3 years ago this month, was a huge western film fan and movie fan in general, who knew all the old timers, from Gene Audrey, to popular (at the time) sidekicks such as Andy Devine, Walter Brennan and George "Gabby" Hayes. He became a fan from his childhood days of making frequent visits to his Uncle who was projectionist at the local theater and collecting comic books, which at the time featured plenty of popular western film stars in their own sequential adventures.
I think he was such a great actor the all his movie's still watch all of them a amazing. I can sure pick out the Wayne kid's the eyes looks. I know you're dad proud of all of you kid's and grandkids he watching over you all.
I watch the same ones over and over and know most of the Duke's lines. We were on Balboa Island 4 years ago and heard some great stories about the Duke. He has always been my hero.
