Thank you for this awesome interview with BlueSky CEO Jay Graber! It let us understand in-depth her vision for this innovative platform! We BlueSky denizens (what do we even call ourselves? BlueSkyers? haha) are indeed so lucky participating in the beginnings of an online revolution!😊🦋🙏💕
Hope social media models, like Bluesky is attempting, will bring civility back into the public square. Where some people will see censorship, others like me, see a safe space to explore big and small ideas without the screamers spewing bile and disrupting the discovery process. I was a Twitter early adopter during the Arab spring, back around 2010, by 2016 I was out. I wish Bluesky success.
Did you arrive on the internet yesterday? Either you want massive and extensive censorship, or contend with non civilized behavior. You can't have both unless you live in fantasy world. The have freedom of speech is to risk being offended. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. Oh, and the "arab spring" was a huge false dawn. In case you didn't get the memo.
Recently signed up for Bluesky. I've only watched 23 mins and i will watch the rest later but so far i think she's clearly very intelligent and it's nice to see a social media CEO that doesn't seem like they're planning on their own long-term rise to fascism. However it does sound like you have to be very tech-minded to get the full benefits of Bluesky, but perhaps that's just a happy extra for those who are and the rest of us will be able to use it like a general social media site haha.
Richest man in the world, and not a business genius? Well that's the dumbest comment of the year. Congrats. You should be called "Theunmitigatedclown". Cope and jealousy through the roof.
The irony is (well firstly I am a software engineer/cybersecurity specialist [degrees inter alia others]) that from an engineering perspective given the timeframe from concept to open access to all I do not think all realize what a massive accomplishment this is given that their subscriber base is now at ~21 000 000 within ~18 months. The irony is that they might be what X aimed for but failed. Look, I have been building platforms for almost two decades and for me it is easy to see what others may not (respectfully). X ranked content which invites challenge, a challenge which incites conflict and allow for 'free reign speech' (hate speech any speech) because it creates maximum exposure for advertisers... breeding catastrophe with no oversight. When things get out of hand so much so that a fracture turned into a fissure there is nothing you can to do undo the damage. From the MOAB X suffered this year, to propaganda, to negating regulatory standards, legislation and much more... musk played his hand, he has no more cards left. I left twitter because simple 2FA came with a price tag (this is pure and utter neglect concerning security it disgusts me even now). The audacity to scrape user data. It would be ironic if BlueSky gain 20-25% of X subscriber based within the next 10-14 months. But BlueSky endurance and perseverance will be required. You will need to have your devs fortify API's, any and all possible entry points, from management in terms of mitigation, anticipation and possible deception, inveiglement and manipulative tactics all the same. if you do not have a zero tolerance policy it is time to do so... Jack had a vision, the man was defeated, burnt-out and sure he was not perfect, nobody is, but you speak of democracy, without pain, without suffering we would have nothing. It is a lot of weight but nothing worth having is easy nor without risk. You have my support
Cool! I like her! Decent person! If the head is good the body will be good! Go Katniss! May the Powerful One and Most High from Above - the Bluesky, be with you!🙏🔥🙌🏾
@@glasgowmedia7421 It doesn't matter. moderation is done at the user end. in your client and it limits or allows as much or as little as you want it to. This is a distributed (federated) social data id cryptographic system where everyone is in charge of their own feed independently of each other. So it shows you what you want and what you don't want to see and simultaneously I'm only seeing what I want to see as well as removing what I don't want to see. While you and I have completely different definitions of what that means to each of us. It's so fucking clever. It actually attempts to solve all of the problems with all of the different social networks at the same time while providing a platform that replaces all social media platforms, and companies. This is the definition of "disruptive technology". this could make all social media companies business models completely unviable.
I just wish this awesome gal could talk to regular people as to 'what' all she said really means to the regular person or user. I didn't understand all the words she used as I'm not into IT or ???
I have a computer science degree and am in tech, and you need to listen carefully and not get distracted to follow what she’s talking about lol. It is quite technical, so a lot of it just won’t mean anything to you regardless.
It's always surprised me how many women are in the tech industry. Jay Graber seems very intelligent and she's a great choice for CEO after Jack Dorsey left it.
My thought was to organize a site via a VR/3D Space that can be like a large house. As you move into rooms, "kitchen" different than your "library", activity appropriate feeds are made more available, front and center. As with a real room, each would be set up with line of sight to other rooms and features. As with real rooms, activities are also time linked. Family and friends, coworkers, peers, along with interests, and bespoke curation of materials, all adjusted to your "location", even which feeds you post to. Along with any timing and frequency parameters. I go to the garden and my feed would conform to include prominence to my local gardening group, a permaculture group, local neighborhood news. Food, food security, are also part of my broader political interests. While chatting with someone say on future challenges facing Ukraine in establishing their agricultural sectors, in the "Living room", information from relative threads in my gardening feed are available in crafting a post. "Uncle Bob's experience with hydroponics..." Of course access to all feeds would be available too. Central Control is always 1 click away.
Thank you both! I just signed up for bluesky, thank you! I've written out a model of what I wanted a social media site to be. Fair bit of overlap. I'll workout over the next few days a presentation and seek some social feedbacks! Exciting, as I'm using various AI tools to flesh it all our.
That butterfly but why? Had it not been me reading a side note on totally unrelated material deal with Lorenz equations, reminded me of how he studied meteorology etc... Butterfly hidden in plain sight, a butterfly flapping its wings... all know the famous quote. Butterfly effect (term he coined). Full of surprises, how small, seemingly insignificant events or changes can have a profound impact on a larger system or outcome. At least I like to believe such is so. it makes sense.
Centralized identity and people tracking is not good. Imagine a journalist or activist in Iran having nowhere to release information without government persecution, or someone falsely accuses you of something, but now your identity on all platforms is compromised. Many platforms, smaller communities, is better
bluesky is heavily moderated toward one side of politics. sometimes the path to hell is motivated by good intentions. lot of people dont know they are evil.
Ive watched her a few times now and I'm 30 minutes in to this video and I still don't know what she's talking about. To clarify, I know what she's taking about and it doesn't make sense. I'm a lifelong tech guy. I taught myself to code in 2 languages starting at the age of 12 in 1983. I went on to work for some major media companies working to develop the web we have today. I did the stuff. The problem going on now is there are all these kids talking all this generic abstract thought bubble kind of stuff that has no real clearly stated application. It's all "this abstract thought" connects to "another abstract thought," "it's a PROTOCOL" "isn't that cool?!" Well, what does that mean? What does it do? What can I do with it. Just saying "it's decentralized" doesn't tell me what I can do with it. And c'mon, I know what decentralized means in this context but it doesn't tell me what functions that will allow that matter to me. Like, how can I support my arts career with this? How can I meet other artists and follow their work beyond just being on Bluesky in a feed like every other platform? We have a weirdly insular tech culture now that seems utterly myopic and out of touch with actual humanity. This all feels like tech for the sake of tech for people to tinker with the tech like a new toy. It's like they're creating all this jargon to not really say anything but they feel so great about it. I have literally never seen what the end results are of all this, and I've looked! I've been on Bluesky and Mastadon from as soon as anybody could publicly be on it. It all sucks. It sucks for random interaction, it sucks for art, there seems to be no music there. The art is all teenage Anime and AI. The different feeds are terrible. It's an idea I've been screaming for for 10 years but the implementation is really bad. Essentially useless. It all feels very high school cliq fad oriented for the sake of being insider fad. I want custom feeds to follow art galleries, bands, record labels, magazines, photographers, models, etc. All separated so I can actually use them. It sounds like they're making tools to do that but i'm not seeing it. The time for them to stop tinkering and start making something real is now.
Decentralization means nothing if content is heavily "moderated". It will be interesting to see whether Bluesky emerges as a real alternative to X, or if it just becomes a left wing, newspeak, matriarchal longhouse.
People actually want moderation. X was fine before as you had to be pretty extreme to get banned . The reason people are leaving is the change of moderation and blocking. Twitter is heavily moderated. Right wing posts are fed to everyone and numerous accounts have been banned by Elon. It has become an influence campaign for right wingers that is forced upon everyone in a moderation methodology much more aggressive manner than ever in the past. You don't appear to be for free speech and user control. You appear to be for forcing your viewpoint on others, but claiming the other side does it.
@@no_alias_for_me No one cares. We're tired of the sick megalomaniac musk. We have moderates and Republicans now who are NOT MAGA. We welcome them for civil discourse. MAGAts need to just fucking go away forever.
Heavily moderated by blocking nazi crap and the endless horrors that MAGAts spread on X is just fine with us. We can now have a thread of intelligent conversation without some MAGAt jumping in and calling people gay, and f@g, cuck, etc. Fuck MAGA to hell and beyond. Non-MAGA Republicans are already there and it's good.
