    Crested gecko humid enclosures plants that worked for me: calathea (stromanthe thalia) for the background as they are quite tall, birds nest fern is quite hardy, likes moisture and doesnt require too much light, parlour palm (this one thrives most for me), alocasia mortfontanensis, dracena marginata and ZZ plant (this one thrives on neglect, honestly!)

    the "snake plants" (a.k.a. "mother-in-law's tongue") will also make delicate white flowers if it's happy -- they're quite lovely~~

      They need plenty of sun to flower, they're actually succulent type that likes a lot of sun even though they tolerate darker places they won't actually be happy so to speak

    Pro tip. While researching i found that most succulents get suffocated due to over watering because they need to absorb more oxygen than water!

    Any plant covered in trichomes, those cool little hairs, won't take to misting. The trichomes hold water so long the leaves are intolerant to it, or can quickly take to rotting

  • @panalakia
    @panalakia 7 років тому +6

    Plants are related to the environment they like. So some plants are need humid and wet conditions. Other like succulents and cacti need hot, dry and very bright condition. Check houseplant website that will give you plant needs. Fitonia will not do well in a dry environment. So you need to divide your plants between tropical and desert.
    You can't just say what's good for a bioactive terrarium. It's what's ok for a tropical humid terrarium or what's great for a dry desert terrarium. So the key is researching the plants and see the environment they like. Some thrive in a humid bathrooms. Others will be fine in your home with central heating. The key is researching your plants. Bioactive herpes sells plants and divide by environment. Check them out.

    Adiantum raddianum doesn’t like to much humidity, I found this out the hard way as I had one in my garg tank and it died within a month. I later asked my friend who is a horticulture expert why and he said about the humidity. Which was a shame because it looked great 👍🏻

    What do you recommend for substrate for bioactive crested geckos?

  • @jessicascheuring7921

    Hi! I was wondering if you were worried about the spikes on the star bromeliad you showed, scratching up the geckos? I recently bought 3 different bromeliads and when I received them in the mail and opened the package, I seen that they all had these very sharp spikes on them, I’m worried if I put them in my tanks they would shred my geckos. Someone told me to cut the spikes off, do you have any advise on this?

    Jungle succulents may work better for you. Things like Christmas cacti like fairly wet setups but not super so you could avoid it. Most succulents are from dry climates.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 років тому +1

      yeah, I did read the Christmas cactus is safe for cresties, my mum has always had them, and I was tempted to add one a while ago, but yeah they're a little tricky.

      +Leopard Gecko Shoot I forgot to think if it was ok for them. I believe its poisonous to cats and dogs. They are tricky because they dont want to be in mud but dont want to be bone dry.

    Your tank is so nice looking! I can tell the work you put into it. I’m just wondering on the moss you have on the bottom of your tank what it’s called where you got it and how it’s doing. Looking for new moss because I think the moss I got from Lowe’s wasn’t cleaned and might have let little bugs and stuff travel to my cage.

    The plants need the minerals in the tap water

    • @kropka8259
      @kropka8259 5 років тому +8

      Some areas have "hard" water that has excessive amounts of minerals (mostly magnesium and calcium). These minerals are bad for your plants, so you shouldn't use hard water directly on them. You also shouldn't use hard water that's been run through a household softener; the salt used in softeners is also bad for the plants. If you've got hard water, filter it with a simple carbon-type filter from the hardware store. You can also use a pitcher-type filtering system sold for drinking water. This filtering removes the minerals without adding other chemicals.

    • @panzerkrieg3509

      Always wash the plants before putting them into a terrarium. Plants may conatins pestesides and fertlizes which might harm aniamls in the enclouser. They may also come with pests.

    i have 2 sempervivums in my back yard planter and its doing fantastic. but it did not belong to me in the first place, i had never paid any attention to it until a couple days ago. (it never got watered for 5 years but was still alive. the other day a noticed the bottom leaves where looking and feeling kind of mushy so i watered them, and after that they looked much better. it just goes to show you they can't go for ever without water, but they can go quite a while without water.

  • @andrewfan7526

    Do u cut the bromeliad pups off? if yes, maybe thats why they didnt do well. The vanilla probably likes the minerals in tap water so once u changed to bottle water it stopped growing. Also tillandsias dont like terrarium conditions cos they like low humidity and lots of air movement, especially the species that have more little silver hairs on them.

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 років тому

      nah you have to wait til the pups are about 1/3 of the size of the adult plant to remove them, but in most cases the adult plant is half dead and I just want to remove it from the tank, however I currently have a Neoregelia (fireball) brom, which has been growing a put for ages, I have finally separated them today, and I think it may grow *fingers crossed*. Yeah, I now have to give the vanilla orchid its own water :') yeah air plants are just a big no no lol

    Do plants need to be chemically treated to be put in terrariums?

      @panzerkrieg3509 5 років тому

      No they should be watched with water, roots and all with a small drop of dawn soup. This will remove any harmful chemicals or pests

    I have a few questions.
    1) does my leopard gecko need a heat mat? The pet store workers said no.
    2) does my gecko need a specialized light?
    3) could it be possible that my gecko is bored of only eating Mealworms? Since he won't even eat anything after I encouraged him using your ways.
    4) my geckos toes looks a bit weird, likes it bent to one side.
    5) how do I know it's shedding? Compared to its first day when I got him, his skin was more brighter? Now it's kinda dull, and I sprayed some water gently, but no skin came off after doing this for a week.
    6) my gecko won't eat, and the tail is slowly getting thinner and thinner. Please help
    7)I take my gecko out of its cage a lot, is that a possible reason why he's still not used to his new environment. If so, how long should I leave him be?
    (I just got him for a total of eight days)

      You need a heat mat and no specialized light btw I recommend feeding crickets and mealworms. Ps: Your gecko sounds stressed

      I know im late but for future reference, Melisa Wong they need heat mats, don't need lights, try a cricket, idk about 4 contact a vet, sounds like its going to shed, they won't eat during shed, try leaving him alone for another week (obviously offer food, I just mean limit handling)

      Depends on preference crested (/gargoyle they are kind of larger cresties) or leopard and also depends on if it's a long term pet for example my ball python is about 7 so should have him for another 10-13 years granted geckos typically don't live as long personally in a few weeks I should be getting a pair of cresties and setting them up in a bio active viv

    Air plants will work, if you don't mist them. They shouldn't be watered, since they absorb water from the air

    Ugh I have to wait like 7 months to get either a crestie or a leopard gecko. I was wondering which one would be good for me as a starter, temp is not a problem.

    • @maxie1199
      @maxie1199 8 років тому

      Definitely leopard geckos, if you can't afford a good tank for them they can be in tubs for the time being, and they only need a couple of hides (one with a heat mat and one without) and maybe another (moist hide) for when their shedding. And the crested gecko will need a tall and more expensive tank with lots of plants that can get expensive

    • @fionashepley478
      @fionashepley478 8 років тому

      I'd say crested geckos are easier to take care if since they don't need heat or live insects, but I have a couple of Leopard geckos and they're very easy to take care of. You need to spray crested geckos once or twice daily, but that's not a big deal. It's up to you.

      Also, I thought anthuriums were poisonous if ingested? Harmless to a gecko if only fed live things outside the terrarium like I know you do, but not if the insects are the plant!

    • @slayerzprime5808
      @slayerzprime5808 8 років тому

      +Shadow Games well he should start eating soon but animals especially reptiles and birds need a longer settling in time my royal didn't eat for 4 weeks granted he only needs to be fed once a week but just give him/her a few days and also are you having there food higher up on maybe a canopy feeder or a makeshift canopy feeder I've seen people attach milk lids to a bit of wood or the side so the gecko will more likely eat it as not on the floor

    • @JTBReptiles
      @JTBReptiles 8 років тому

      +Shadow Games It won't gain weight over night, bear in mind.
      As long as your gecko is eating well, it may not seem to be growing at all for a while. I would offer appropriately sized and dusted insects maybe twice a week (crickets, locusts and roaches are the better options) to help it grow.
      Some take a while to grow as well, someone I know has a gecko they rescued and it is taking ages to get any bigger.
      I wouldn't be worried as long as it is hydrated, active and healthy.

    Hi, is terrarium size of 400X250X300H (in cm) good for 1 leopard gecko or is it too small?

    • @leopardgeckotalk
      @leopardgeckotalk  8 років тому

      Do you mean in mm? So 400mm = 40 cm? I would say it's a tad too small. You wanna kind of aim for about 60cm length, 45 cm width and height.

    IS EVERGREEN TREE BRANCHES SAFE FOR CRESTED GECKOS? I looked everywhere cannot find the info

    • @felixmakesart
      @felixmakesart 5 років тому

      No. A lot of evergreen trees give off substances toxic to reptiles. Try using a golden pothos, they grow well as long as they are watered.

    • @saintanthonygoodchild1288
      @saintanthonygoodchild1288 5 років тому

      Hey I'm just wondering how it's going with the pothos in with your crested? My gecko is 5 y/o, I've had him since birth and go through multitudes of plants regularly. I recently placed a large, hearty g.pothos in the enclosure and I thought it most peculiar that he did not take to it at all, which is something he usually does immediately with all new plants, he's like a kid with a new toy. But with this plant, I never saw him on it or in it, and he even seemed sluggish after a few days and I thought maybe he's sick. I went to internet for research and got conflicting info on this plant as far as whether it's toxic or not. I do feed crickets on the occasion so I'm glad this video called out the live feeders with ivy, etc. I immediately yanked the plant out and closely monitored the gecko around the clock and within a day he seemed to have sprung back to life. So I guess I have my own personal answer here, I just wanted to check around, see if anyone had any similar experinces? Thanks and best of luck with your c.g!

    Hi I love your videos and they're super helpful but I was wondering I bought a gecko today and at the moment it's night time here but he's very skinny also when I got him the lady told me he didn't like hunting crickets meaning he had to be hand fed or he preferred meal worms but I tried feeding him an already dead cricket like the lady suggested but he seems very un interested and I'm worried there may be something wrong with him :(

    ... You've got to be kidding me I went to my iPad to do research for plants for my bio active viv along with potentially plants that are ok with chameleons as most bio active plants kill them making it very hard for setup (haven't watched yet...)
