Finding safe and aesthetically pleasing plants for your reptile terrarium or amphibian terrarium can be fun and exciting but might seem overwhelming if you are new to planting bioactive enclosures. So while in Costa Rica my friend Mike Tytula and I have decided to go over the Top 5 Terrarium plants to make your next bioactive build a work of art! If you're just staring out a large, broad leaf plant like a Philodendron or maybe a Monstera plant will give you the most aesthetic look and feel while also offering cover to smaller animals and providing perching options for even smaller species like Dart Frogs, Mourning Geckos or even tree frogs. Another great option if you're looking for a plant that will root on the background of your terrarium enclosure or on a log or other surfaces would be a bromeliad. Guzmania and other bromeliad species offer hiding areas to small reptiles and amphibians as well as providing an egg laying sight for frogs and other amphibians. Along with Bromeliads another great option for growing above the substrate are orchid species. Orchids look beautiful and also give cover to the subjects of your bioactive build. If you're looking for a plant that is very robust and grows in soil you may want to consider Snake Plant. Mother in Law's Tongue is a taller, stiffer plant. My Crested Geckos love hanging out on the sturdy stalks of the snake plant in their enclosure. Of course we can't do a plants video without talking about Pothos. Pothos vines and grows like crazy. This is one of the easiest, cheapest and most easily propagated plants you can find!

Anyone know of a uromastyx breeder in the Midwest??
loved the video adam! could we possibly get a how-to bioactive enclosure video? i think it'd be really helpfull :)
Great suggestion!
I was thinking about that also! I think it would be a good idea to do a video about the upkeep of a bioactive enclosure because not many reptile keepers talk about that part of keeping a bioactive enclosure running.
What a wonderful idea, I'm looking to get into building a huge bioactive enclosure and I would love to incorporate some of Adam's ideas. I have more faith in this guy than anyone else to give us the good educated information
@@WickensWickedReptiles I don't know if it is ok to suggest another channel, but you should check out The Bio Dude, he is all about bioactive enclosures. I followed his instructions and now have both my snakes on bioactive set ups. His store's website also has links to care sheets and stuff that is really helpful for those of us with less experience learn more...is why I watch your channel, to learn.
I just finished a doing 3 part how-to enclosure build series. The last video is about setting it up as bioactive.
I'd definitely love to see videos on plants broken down into arid, tropical and temperate environments, as well as edible versus not for people building bioactive enclosures for critters that will definitely be munching on their plants.
Oh, and maybe top fives for CUC based on the environment they're going into too!
Plants and reptiles? My two favorite things :D
I hope you enjoy!
Was waiting for for ...
Coming in at number 3, on our list of favorite terrarium plants, the spade foot toad...
Was I the only one disappointed by not even a little amphibian joke in the plant list?
Another great one is a spider plant. I have used them in both hot and dry as well as super humid environments. My pothos cooked, but my spider plant thrived even though it was closer to the heat bulb. Another one is a dracaena. I have one in a super saturated vivarium and another is a forgotten houseplant that came back to life with a little water. Both plants are super hardy and versatile
another thing about philodendron and monstera, they can be grown with their roots / lower of The plant in a shallow, bog type pot with clay balls in water, or in water alone with a stable base
yes! thanks for adding this!
Our crestie is in love with his snake plant. He slept in it through most of the days we had him. Great video!
yes! I've been waiting for this video!
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@WickensWickedReptiles Yes, loved the video!
Pothos can be used as a semi aquatic plant for turtle tanks . With just the roots in the water
yep, my turtles very much like eating the roots haha
I have one in my mossy frogs tank in the water and its since vined up the backdrop but still is staying based in the water
You can grow pothos fully submerged as well. Have them in all of my waterfall ponds and they are great for removing nitrates from the water features.
I would love to see a top 5 for dryer enclosures! Seeing as a lot of people are doing bio active enclosures for things like beardies and leopard geckos it would be nice to know what options are there!
good to know this, i find it incredibly hard to find good information about plants that would work in a terrarium, im used to aquarium plants and there are a lot less of them
So nice of you!
Great list, all of these are staples in my enclosures. It's hard to argue Pothos as #1, those things are bulletproof, the go in just about every home I build! I've got one that has completely taken over one of my garter snakes' enclosure. It's given them so many climbing opportunities/perches. Watching them zip around through the canopy is so much fun!
They truly are bulletproof. I worked in a group home that had one. It took me 6 months to realize it was a real one. Nobody had been watering it. It never wilted or anything. I honestly thought it was a fake plant because it never looked different. Once I figure out how I'm doing my Beardie's new tank, I plan on adding one.
pothos are such a great terrarium plant! I keep a bunch with my snails and they're perfect
Dude, I work as a zoo horticulturist, and I totally agree with all your chooses, also I love your channel and your philosophy of caring a lot and think before having any pet.
Great video.
Also I'll add to this list, the ferns for your amphibians and even some cacti and many commelinaceae species, like spiderworts (just have some care with the toxic varieties, but must of the time the reptiles don't eat any of these)
There are several vlogs on creating a bioactive.....how about an ongoing care vlog so the cleanup crew stays alive (or how to tell that it IS still alive)? Plant maintenance, i.e. splitting, pruning. Do you have to fill the bromeliad "vase" with water? Or is that only if your dart frogs are raising babies, or you need more humidity? So many questions. Is F-10 used for cleaning glass, or is water used exclusively, especially with amphibians? So there is one vlog nearly in the can.
Next more juicy idea....which of your houseguests has the longest teeth? You can go smallest to largest . Which have no teeth and how prey selection works for that species, or jaw structure....and do old snakes lose their teeth like old humans? Does their tooth regeneration ever stop?
Second vlog written. Booyah!
Happy Thanksgiving! (For people that celebrate) Have a good day!
You too!
I have an idea for a video Adam:
Top 5 introductory reptiles to get when your partner doesn’t like reptiles.
Another WWR masterpiece! 🤌🏼
thanks man!
Philodendron is a class of plants and there are a lot of different ones. Monsteras are big but one like pothos the philodendron adansonii is a cool vine plant with holes in it like the huge monstera deliciosa
Adam talking about pothos in the end…. And hugging a philodendron hederaceum. 🤣😁 So jealous for your little trip to Costa Rica it seams you had a fabulous time!!!
It was pretty dope!
This is how we know diamond is the true star of this channel LOL you almost said this is Diamond when pointing at the plant LOL. Great video is always adam, I'm actually thinking about doing a bioactive enclosure of just plants for my mom's residence, she works in a memory care unit at a nursing home and thought that this might be kind of a cool thing for them to help them relax and de-stress them. So this very helpful
Happy thanksgiving phenomenal video
Great video, very informative. Thanks.
My crestie loves his snake plant.
Thank you!! Been waiting for a video like this! Love your videos! You’re the best! Happy thanksgiving!
Love the video dude
Nice! I love your style of editing btw
This is awesome!
Adam: "The snake plant is taller than me"
That not saying much, lmao
hahahhaa, fair
This is an awesome video. Not really into plants but love the style of video.
Great video
Monstera are hands down my favorite plant. Clint has a variegated one that I love. I started one from a couple stems and it was doing well and I was so proud until my girlfriend bought one for herself and it exploded and is wildly outgrowing mine with the same care.
Happy thanksgiving Adam 🦃
Same to you!
I needed this!!
ehhhh
So awesome that you used footage from Costa to bring it all together! I know you just made a plant video but if you ever considered going over some of the plants in the 'mini zoo' you just acquired I would be very interested to see what some of those species are and how they keep over time
Dude! The cinematography was amazing in this video!
This is perfect Bc Im getting a crested gecko on Sunday
This video was really good
I have a snake plant in my leopard gecko tank and it is amazing! Pothos is a wonderful species and I have a lot of it.
Awesome video! I hope you enjoyed your time there! BTW, Phalaenopsis can do great in terrariums too ;)
The orchid is most likely Dinema(Epidendrum) polybulbon. You forgot Peperomias, Aglaonemas , Spathopyllums, etc. Here in the states the best bet is to check out the Angel plants at your local big box store since you can find some real gems in the stuff from them although they don't have the same amount of different stuff now they have been bought by Costa nurseries. BTW there is a new variety of pothos on market called pothos Cebu blue. I saw some plants of this for sale at my local Lowes. To many plants must stop before I go on a nd on.
Lovely video
For the intro you should've said I'm Adam and this is Phillip the philondendron
hahahhaa, yes!
Really cool video, I would love to see a video for a how to guide on making a bio active set up with plants and materials you can get in ON.
Great job on video my favorite is the snake plant
I was wondering why I love listening to you and it’s because you’re also Canadian and has the most perfect Canadian accent!
Merry Christmas, eh!
Great video adam! It would be interesting to see if you could make a video about how to make a bioactive enclosure for arid reptiles. I find it quite hard to do. Cheers :D
Love the video mate keep it up 🙂
Thanks for the visit
love this video
Great Information, Great Video, stunning Location.
Respect
Thanks a lot 😊
Great video.
I was just thinking of this type of video last night as I was thinking of doing a bio active enclosure lol
This man is awesome give him some likes, well deserved happy Thanksgiving ya'll 😊
Snake plants are the only terrarium plant that's survived for me, even pothos has died when I tried introducing it to my vivarium.
I'm good with plants but pothos is the one thing I can never keep alive. Also my sand boa murdered a snake plant
snakes are tough on plants!
Oh hell yeah next up is a bio active vivarium I can feel it
talking about pothos: "and you won't be able to kill it either"
me (a person who has in fact killed pothos about 3 times already): well this is awkward 😬
not a green thumb eh? haha
@@WickensWickedReptiles that's why I try to stick to the plastic ones 😅
SAAAAAAAAME... I've killed a snake plant too
I killed a pothos too, so your not the only pothos murderer 🤣
Don't feel bad. I have actually killed a cactus and I have killed an aloe vera plant. Not proud of it but that's the way it goes.
My faves are pothos and hibiscus.
great plants!
I’ve had the same snake plant in my house for over six years. I neglect it terribly sometimes and it thrives. Might have to put it in my will at this point 😂😂
I finally bought my ball Python his name is Mochi but I call him DaBaby Mochi 😂 so thanks for all these wonderful ideas Adam ☺️💜
I love these videos so much
thanks so much!
Thank you Adam! The video really helped.
so glad you enjoyed!
You’re killin’ it in Costa Rica!
it was a great time
Awesome video
Thanks!
Love your videos! Your really teaching me allot about this whole hobby, I think k you should look into talking about hermit crabs, I feel like they are very underrated and not allot of people know how to properly take care of them
Great suggestion!
I just want to say I am a huge fan of your videos. I have been watching your videos and so far been absolutely in love with them. Loved them enough that I have recently purchased me first snake. I was wondering what I’d have to do to convince you to do a video on Columbian Rainbow Boas. I got one as my first snake (his name is Foog) and I feel like I’m doing good with him but an in-depth video would be wonderful. Thank you!!!
I wasnt sure about adding a snake plant to my tree skinks tank but now I feel a bit better about it thanks!! Pothos is life lol especially for people like me who kill planta by thinking about them 😂
Yay, finally a plants video! I love purple heart or various other tradescantia. They managed to survive my black thumb even when pothos didn't. I think some string-of-things would do well in terrariums, but I need to play with that more. btw, Anyone keep a Nordic fir in a terrarium?
Great video. How about an intermediate list of viv plants?
I was gonna watch mike tytula right after this still am
Great video. I find it hilarious that you put two genera in a single category-and one of the largest families of plants in the world (Orchidaceae) as another ;)
Definitely give up the orchids for Trancendentia
cool plant
I freaking love pathos! I’m going to try it out in a dry enclosure on the cool side. More arid plants would be so appreciated! I’ve got a bearded dragon that I’m upgrading within the next year or so and planning a huge enclosure. I know they tent to be tanks and knock over everything but I’m willing to try!
Great idea!
I would like to see a Top 5 for most dangerous animals for except keeps/ handlers mite help stop some mistakes
great idea
Thumbs up.
Even though moss is my all-time favorite terrarium plant, all kinds of moss, I love moss ...
What kind of moss would thrive!? I bought some sphagnum peat moss but treated with fertilizer (miracle grow) so I’m looking for something for my leopards gecko 40 gal tank. I appreciate any help!
When moving to our new apartment, me and my mother went plant crazy. We have two pothos, and I only wish I had some kind of reptile to use it for!
Can you make a video on the best bio active plants for a leopard gecko enclosure.
🤘woooooooooo🤘
wooooooooooo
Yeah, I figured pathos would be 1 or 2, my corn snake has his and waters it himself
Plus my mom has like a 30 ft one in the living room just going across it and the dining room
nice
.
For dry/desert I'm planning on "elephant feed" Portulacaria afra (bio dude sells 'em). Safe and edible. Seems nice and tree like. I'm surprised I don't see this flora more widely used. Next video? How about bioactive dry/desert set up. Or adding fans to existing set ups - how that affects thermal gradient, offers enrichment, etc.
Plants not the most exciting topic...lol, just kidding 😜 I do like the Costa Rica connection to why these plants work!!!
i have a monkey tailed skink. she's in a 5x3x6 enclosure. should i pot the snake plants, bromalids and pothos or plant them directly into the substrate?
Nice video! One question though, I put a snake plant in my crested gecko for a change and I saw little bite marks on it and I want to know if it's safe for her to eat it.
In the midst of making my hognose bioactive, still debating whether or not to use live plants but may come back to this if i do!
Anyone know where to get a uromastyx in the Midwest
I love the plant video Adam! And I love the adopt-a-turtle bracelet! I have one too her name is Foxy!
so cool!
So I have snake and she has bioactive but I'm not sure which plants are good to keep the soil clean?? Like the nitrogen and ammonia
This maybe a dumb question but I'm going to ask it anyway. Do any of these plants need a special lighting? I'm doing my first bioactive setup and I want to add live plants.
What about putting grass or chia in a cornsnake enclosure ?
Loved this video. One thing you didn't discuss is what plants are edible and which are toxic. While I can plant pretty much whatever I want with my cresties and day geckos, I need to be far more discriminate when planting for my prehensile tailed skinks. They eat everything in sight so all plants in their habitat need to be "safe" for them to eat.
So are any of these good for a snake enclosure?
Another video for less tropical plants? I'm struggling with my bearded dragon bioactive enclosure. Everything died so fast.
I just love most plants.😂💚
same!
Hi can enyone tell me if dragon trees are safe for reptiles there toxic to cats or dogs but I heard there safe for reptiles but I can't find enything online
can green nerve plant survive in water
FINALLY
I hope you enjoy!
@@WickensWickedReptiles I’m huge into plants and reptiles so it’s nice to see another one of us on UA-cam. In my opinion monsteras don’t get enough attention in the reptile trade
I have killed a snake plant! I don´t now how. it´s in my leos terrarium and it just started to get yellow and now it´s dead. the one I got in my cresties are fine. I got two other plants with my leo and they are fine.
My mom had a pothos for over 30 years but she couldn’t bring it with her in an international move.
sad to hear!
