Hi I have a Senegal parrot, Olive. I rescued her/him from an abusive home with 5 cats. He/she was locked up for 5 years. We have had olive for just over a month. Olive has one leg, because he/she chewed it off when she was left in the cage and got caught in the ropes. I saw how this poor parrot was living. Locked up in a very dirty cage. I asked about him/her , and the woman instantly wanted me to have her/him. I will just say her, as it gets confusing.
I have never owned a parrot. I have a budgie. So when this poor girl came into my home. We started to shower her with love. It took me over two hours to clean the cage. After a week and a half we opened her door, she did not want to leave her cage. We just left it open to see what she would do. She did not leave, so I closed it up and thought to try again the next day. The following day, after food and cleaning the bottom of the cage, I opened the door and she climbed out. We gave her so much praise, I offered her a treat and she lunged and bit me, then she flew at my husband and bit him too. We both hid in the kitchen. She was now out of the cage, shrieking and attacking us. I had to wait until she climbed back inside and I ran and closed the door. We have taken it in turn to feed and clean the base of the cage. Anyway, my husband got bitten violently today, it bled. I know she has been through a traumatic time. We want to give olive a loving home. Do I need to approach her first to befriend her? Or should we continue sharing the duties? Also, she needs exercise, she is a little overweight. What do you recommend I should do? We really love her and would love her to be part of the family. My husband fears her. I check her body language. My husband works from home but downstairs. I work away from home full time. Could you give me some pointers please 🙏🙏🙏🙏 sorry for the long message, I am so desperate. Thank you. We love Alfie 💖

How did you got that bird standing in that stand without flying anywhere else? My bird flew if I try to sit him there. I will appreciate your response.
