Obviously Clyde isn't afraid. Things are very different trying to interact with a new bird on day one when it's flying away from you because it's terrified. I love your videos and I've learned so much from them. I'm really glad you have a Cockatiel. They are wonderful birds.
Clyed is doing great. My Pepper was petrified for 3months, i started to interact with him from the day one, it was so hard to tame him, we couldn't even passed by his cage, his previous owner never handled him, he was caged for a while year, not sure what they did to him. I got him 9 months ago, now he is 2yrs old happy boy.
I am one of the people who loves the cockatiel content. I've raised hundreds of cockatiels. Their bite is no joke. It's like 3 razor blades. Be happy Clyde is a male. Females can bite into your knuckle. Of course the females have stronger jaws so they can dig out nest cavities but that's small comfort when they've latched on to your finger
If he wasn't eating it at home, he likely would not have eaten it in the car. Cockatiels are notorious for avoiding new foods and diets. The only way I managed to convert my 'tiel to pellet, was because she was broody at the time (they are very motivated to lay) and she was too hungry to refuse an offer of what looked like millet. So I first converted her to Lafebers finch pellet, which is a pretty identical formula to their cockatiel diet, but it's roughly the size of loose millet seeds. After one container of Finch pellet, we switched her nearly seamlessly to their cockatiel pellets, mixing some in with the finch stuff for several days, and she was on the cockatiel pellets until she died at almost 16 years old. She never transitioned to chop. She would have a bit of whatever fruit we would be eating, but she would not touch vegetables. But at least, I had her on one of the best pellets, per our avian vet, so her diet was fairly balanced, if a bit boring.
All these little struggles seems to be such a common thing with cockatiels. I have one who gives the paw BUT only on his terms. Sometimes he does it perfectly, and other times he flies away as soon as I ask him. And both of mine seem to absolutely love doing things they know will get them in trouble... like destroying my plants or chipping at my door frames despite having tonnes of toys (I always have to make sure all my plants are bird safe). They do their mischievous things together too.
I was laughing the whole time watching your video. I see your struggles (like accidentally casting the stick too fast) and I can definitely relate😂 I always felt that cockatiels are super cautious and the slight change in speed, angle, and color of everything presented can differ their responses… And that’s the point where I struggled A LOT. Some think that cockatiels are easy but yeah…. there maybe less serious bites but…..
one of my tiels whom i hand reared from seven weeks is a lot easier to work with than my other whom i adopted at about 15 yo. He'd been passed around a time or two and left in his cage covered for a very long time and shows a lot of the same behaiviors i saw in the first Clyde video. I agree Tiels can be hard! I look forward to this series to get help for my "old" man to help improve his life more so than it has already.
I'm so happy you're doing cockatiel content. I got my little guy last year and I still struggle with him, so this is going to be really helpful. : ) Clyde is such a cutie!
I never waited either ! My cockatiel is "aggressive" lunging and taking chunks out bcuz he was abused before. So I use a pillowcase instead of my hand and now im able to interact with him and give him treats! He loves the other birds too. Im a foster failure 😅
Never take his intelligence or his communication for granted. Clyde is incredibly clear the whole time. He is a happy and good boy. You just need to learn the subtle language of 'tiels.
I guess I can't watch your videos on speakers anymore. My cockatiels were SCREAMING when they heard Clyde hahaha! Were constantly checking him out and watching him. My ears are ringing now, but the video was great ♥. I am corious what your cockatiel mix contains, because we give them a selfmade seedmix with 50% low fat seeds and 50% fatty seeds, because they fly so much. I am scared if I take the canary seed or millet out of their normal seedmix they won't have so much energy anymore. We also give TOPS pellets and fresh food tho (although they are a bit picky about their veggies). Lots of love for you and the BirdTricksTeam ♥
Clyde is going to thrive in your house. such an adorable Cockatiel. Plus most important i want to give Capri the biggest high five for taking such wonderful care of Bluee and being able to be so loving and responsible for adopting him. he is in such good hands. i cried that whole video as i love that little guy too. keep us all updated as you have many fans loving the videos. big hugs.
Thanks so much for these tips as we are bringing home a baby parrotlet in a few weeks and everyone keeps saying keep it in its cage for 3 days but I’m like you and feel it will make it harder for them to come out afterwards and interact
He is just too cute. I have two cockatiels. Mine were easy to train I guess they may not have been mistreated. The male has a deformed beak but eats well. I have the female for 5 years, the male more than a year. I use your training techniques.
He is beautiful I love lutiano cockatiels. I bet you guys will end up keeping this project bird and he would be a great addition for your guy's daughter and you guys too.
I agree with you. We have 9 Caiques. We have always taken them out on the first day here. It’s always worked out very well. Also one was lightly clipped but still had excellent flying skills. He also is the must reliable as far as recall.😊
Great video as always! Why do you use a seed mix for cockatiels instead of your Seasonal Feeding System? Or is this part of Clyde's diet conversion process?
I absolutely agree that you should not put them away in cage first day. Play with them, cuddle them. Let them know everyone is their friend and space is friendly. It sure worked for mine.
Could you please show us your cockatiel seed mix? I have 3 cockatiels. A parrotlets and 4 budgies. I use your budgie mix for them but I just add a few extras for the cockatiels and parrotlet. Love Clyde! He’s adorable x
Clyde is very cute. ♥ My cockatiels won't step up but they are VERY food driven and even "ask" for food by nibbling the cage wall right next to the center door of the cage and/or saying IIIH exactly when it's 8:30 pm and bedtime. They know the time better than me some days, they're like an alarm clock 😂 They still do some wacky and insecure flying around the living room in our new apartment but hopefully they will be able to navigate better soon
Your cockatiel is so cute, even with the clipped tail. (Of course that’s not a good thing they did). I have 2 caiques and in October I got these 2 beautiful yellow-sided green cheek conures. When I drove to get them it took about 2 hours , my friend went with me. On the way home she got the birds out of their enclosure and put them on my shoulder and they just sat there so content all the way home. Now 5 months later, I let them out of their cage in the morning and they are out most of the day, they’re well behaved and oddly enough they will fly onto my shoulders or on my head but they will not let me touch them with my hands. They won’t step up. I deal with chronic pain, I did start doing target training in the beginning but my pain started getting bad and I slacked off. They are both females and the one would step up good but the other not at all. Now neither of them step up. And it’s been tough getting them to go back in their cage. I just started this in the evening when I put all the birds night-night; I have a whole routine that I’ve always done when having my 1st caique, and they love it. I sit with them for about 20 min. and play soft music preferably Disney, they really respond to that. Then when I leave the room to say goodnight I go over to Lani & Layla’s cage and tickle their little toes, then their belly. Lani responded to this the 1st few nights and Layla didn’t want to have anything to do with it, so 2 nights ago she started coming up to the cage for tickles too. Is that a good sign that they will eventually let me touch them? I also started yesterday to use the target again when they’re up in the morning, I do this while they’re in the cage. Any suggestions would be appreciated and if I’m doing the right thing . Thank you for reading this long post. Good luck with your cockatiel. 😊
Cockatiels can eat veggies btw! Also when you want him to go on your bare hand offer millet at a distance where he has to get on your hand and he will quickly learn that your hand is safe. Also might want to make that mix a bit more crushed up so its smaller pieces and easier for him to eat.
I took this advise, everyone else said to leave the bird in the cage for a few days. I've never left a bird in a cage when it isnt bed time. I wanted him to know straight away that the whole room is for him. I put carrier on the floor door open and started tidying up while talking softly. He came out after half an hour and I offered some millet and he took it but very scared of hands. I sat on the floor for about 2 hours just showing him toys and pretending to play with them and he sat quiet not moving but not freaking out or breathing rapidly. I offered millett again and after about 4 hours he was on my hand. Put him to bed, next day put my hand in and he went for it a few times so i just spoke softly and left the cage door open. I kept trying every hour or so and eventually he came out on his own and just sat on the perch outside of the cage. Three days of offering a hand with millet later, hes on my hand, head, feet and trying to fly but cant because previous owner cut his wings. No more millet for a while but hes doing really well now and whistles when hes awake in the morning so he can get out of his cage.
Similar to Bluee, our cockatiel loved the pellets, but not the seasonal feeding. Had to sprinkle some pellet crumbs over the seasonal for a few weeks before she’d eat the seasonal feeding by itself.
Cockatiels that from a petstore will never be friendly We have 1 and 1 rescue, they are still great pets (hilarious little guys). But they have to come to us for nice interactions, we can't go to them If you want a cuddly tiel you have to get one from a good breeder
my brother and dad just got a pair of budgies and ill just say I'm very happy with how their training is going so far (my brother and father doesn't know how to train birds so I'm teaching as I train them myself)
(Any help is deeply appreciated, sorry this it kinda out of no where!) I've had my pet parakeet, Flapjack, since December of 2022. This is my first time owning a bird and the only pets I have taken care of are cats, fish, and rats. Currently, it's just three cats and Flapjack. Even though I've never had a bird there are some things as a pet owner you pick up on such as giving them space in the begining. I got Flapjack from a pet store so I knew it would be tough and take longer than usual to gain their trust and yet I still worry. I've tried to keep myself calm and that with time and effort some day Flapjack and I can be best buds, but I'm starting to worry and I freak out over the thought of failure. But I don't want to give up on trying I'm just really bad at doing the whole once every day thing. I have made a few mistakes like letting Flapjack out of their cage I will admit, I'm not proud of it, and, not on purpose, making them freak out and fly around in their cage. I feel like everything I do makes it worse. As of this moment, I can hand-feed them by holding a small piece of spray millet in my fingers or even some seeds. I understand a few body language cues such as puffed feathers or standing on one foot. I'm a sophomore in high school who is usually burnt out from school when I get home. I try my best with talking to Flapjack but I never know what to say, my mind goes blank. Other times I'm ranting to Flapjack. I sing to them sometimes or read a book, although I haven't done that for a few months. I've made sure Flapjack has everything they need in a cage. Some other things I want to mention either because I don't know what it means or if it might help are that Flapjack would bite at his hammock (that's what I call it might be called something else) made of seagrass. Flapjack used to bite through them so much I had to keep getting more but then they stopped for a while and started again recently. (Flapjack also lives in my room with me btw) Flapjack sometimes will stand on their perch and flap their wings a lot. I also have a black sheet that goes around to cage for when it's time to go to bed. Compared to when I first got Flapjack to now, there is a huge difference. I just was hoping anyone who knew more about birds could help with my problem. I hope to be able to pet and hold Flapjack. Have I already lost Flapjack's trust for good? I deeply appreciate any advice/help.
They are definitely strong flyers. Which is why so many people clip them and then are surprised when they fly out the door. My teil loved chop... I'm wondering why you didn't try your seasonal feeding?
I have a similar resue whose wings were clipped not in a proper shape. I mean some feathers where cut till his shoulders. He used to sit in his cage the whole day without even preening himself. But now he has stared to like being outside but I guess we are still far away as I am not able to covert his diet. But your videos are helpful so hope I can replicate the same and help my mango out..❤❤
Who would ever recommend clipping a bird's tail? If veterinarians do that, there should be legislation against it. Why would you take the bird's brakes away and leave the wings unclipped??
I love how this video encapsulates what a cockatiel is: Jamie: Are you serious? Clyde: ¬¬ J: Are you just gonna bypass it? C: Yup ¬¬ J: That's so rude! C: Deal with it ¬¬ xDDDDDDD They are STUBBORN AF. Not as much as cockatoos, thank goodness, but soooooo stubborn.
@@joebean3615 my bad. I meant cacatuas (sulphur crested cockatoos, umbrella c., moluccan c., Etc). In Spanish both "cacatua"(genus cacatua) and "cockatoo"(family Cacatuidae) are called "cacatua", so it's very confusing hahaha
Hi. I have an affinity with most all animals. I'm 58 though and my next animal friend could possibly out live me. So I'm thinking of a preloved pet. It's more difficult as like us they have "baggage". Avians are a whole new world to me. I really like Mcaws and cockatoos. I'm thinking to buy an older one, without too many owners in it's past as the break bond baggage is harder to overcome with all creatures. I'm a committed owner in respect of time spending... I'm on the cusp of a three way choice. A camel or s parrot . Or nothing... But the last option is a shame as I can provide the right creature a loving compassionate companionship. What can I do. ? What will any of us do at this age when we find interspecies interactions so fulfilling, and when providing loving understanding care to any creature is something the world really needs? Adopt a human ? ,😂
Doesn't changing a birds diet super quickly make them feel sick? Or they'll just reject it? I thought you had to slowly convert from old diet to new diet over a couple weeks so that they don't feel sick
My cockatiel is 22! He hatched here. When I take him in for toenail clipping they say he doesn’t look that old. Do you say what is in your seed mix? My guy has rice, greens, and a peanut every morning. Seed mix and millet in his cage at night.
Hey, there! I have prepared your homemade seed mix for small birds before, but not the cockatiel-specific one. I don’t recall seeing that in the cookbooks, either. Have you shared a link to this recipe? All of my birds love the homemade mix but I’d also love to try this one for Figgy Bird! Thanks!
I'm getting a bird soon, and I was wishing Birdtricks had a "What to Do When You Bring a New Bird Home" video... needless to say, they came through once again!
Do you know why his tail feathers had been cut? When we rescued our cockatiel she had a cut tail, but her wing feathers weren’t cut. We couldn’t figure out why someone would do that, our vet hadn’t seen that before either
We're getting our cockatiel on Saturday! So excited! We've had canaries for ages, I'm really excited to get to know these fantastic birds! I was wondering, is clicker training necessary, does it provide any advantages non clicker trained birds dont have?
clicker training will make it more precise and mark the exact moment, I use a little torch for my Guinea pigs (not as loud since they have sensitive hearing)
i need some tips for an african grey i rescued he will step up take treats and all that but he is terrified of hands near him at the same time any tips or info? please help
You're making me want to get a bird so bad watching your videos I guess my biggest question would be what should I look like how do I know I'm even compatible with a 🐦 what would be your best suggestion if you know having a bird as a pet I don't know how to make this choice like I I don't know if I'm even compatible to take care of one
@@carolhartley4448 unfortunately I suffer from bad anxiety a lot of the videos I see people say State huh but that's what I'm worried about the animals can feel what you're feeling and I'm worried that my anxiety you'll just give the poor thing a heart attack
@@melissatrader8528 oh I think you'd be fine with a bird, they are so in tuned with their owners, they bond with you, training, and lots of love, i wouldn't worry about your condition , they are very loving.
If you have any rescues nearby, I can't recommend fostering enough as a way to get to know birds and how they fit in with your lifestyle. And new foster homes are always in demand!
I don't understand why people think it's okay to clip birds' wings. When I got a new cockatiel, the seller clipped a wing before I could tell her don't clip. Since one wing was clipped, she had to do the next one. Why, why oh why! Soar high, Clyde!
The main breeder here does because she had someone get two tiels without clipping. That night she got a message that one got scared, flew into a wall, then sadly died that same night😢. I feel like this could have happened either way but she does see it as a way of protecting her birds that she hand raises. I'm on the fence but this story just breaks my heart
The food you are trying to give him is not suitable. This is one type of grain. You have to buy food for the bird, various grains, vitamins and dried fruit pieces.
Lol... if Clyde will touch you first day he isn't much project😄 get a project that bashes itself into the cage from freaking out just because you are in the same room and then educate us about project birds.
I don't understand what the video has to do with the topic of bringing a new bird home....I don't think you should start with clicker training when you bring a new bird home....a bit of topic if you ask me and not what people expect to see...

(Flapjack also lives in my room with me btw)
Flapjack sometimes will stand on their perch and flap their wings a lot.
I agree totally!
Love Clyde. My keets and I would like to know about his backpack too!
Why would anyone cut a tiel's tail?!
I know?? That's so wrong!😢
Or any birds tail.
Ignorance
Stupid and evil.
Monsters exist.
I love how this video encapsulates what a cockatiel is:
Jamie: Are you serious?
Clyde: ¬¬
J: Are you just gonna bypass it?
C: Yup ¬¬
J: That's so rude!
C: Deal with it ¬¬
xDDDDDDD
They are STUBBORN AF. Not as much as cockatoos, thank goodness, but soooooo stubborn.
Cockatiels are cockatoos
Adopt a human ? ,😂
Good information ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I guess the best first bird Blue is whom Clyde should meet First? A small bird Clyde can beat up.
Doesn't changing a birds diet super quickly make them feel sick? Or they'll just reject it? I thought you had to slowly convert from old diet to new diet over a couple weeks so that they don't feel sick
This help me som much I just got my new cocktail
So on the first day. Taking Clyde right into the Garage Bird Jungle Cages could be a bad thing?
My cockatiel is 22! He hatched here. When I take him in for toenail clipping they say he doesn’t look that old. Do you say what is in your seed mix? My guy has rice, greens, and a peanut every morning. Seed mix and millet in his cage at night.
my cockatiel died at 23 year of age. Had him from childhood. It's empty, that place where he has been.
Hey, there! I have prepared your homemade seed mix for small birds before, but not the cockatiel-specific one. I don’t recall seeing that in the cookbooks, either. Have you shared a link to this recipe? All of my birds love the homemade mix but I’d also love to try this one for Figgy Bird! Thanks!
What do you use as your clicking sounds when treating him?
I'm getting a bird soon, and I was wishing Birdtricks had a "What to Do When You Bring a New Bird Home" video... needless to say, they came through once again!
What brand backpack for carrying birds is it?
The one they offer on their website. It's great.
Do you know why his tail feathers had been cut? When we rescued our cockatiel she had a cut tail, but her wing feathers weren’t cut. We couldn’t figure out why someone would do that, our vet hadn’t seen that before either
Will you be keeping Clyde on just the seed mix you’ve made or will he also be getting your pellets? Just curious cause my tiels are on the pellets 😊
I bet they'll try to end up doing the natural feeding system. Jamieleigh is a huge advocate of healthy diet!
who else loves the name Clyde?
We're getting our cockatiel on Saturday! So excited! We've had canaries for ages, I'm really excited to get to know these fantastic birds!
I was wondering, is clicker training necessary, does it provide any advantages non clicker trained birds dont have?
clicker training will make it more precise and mark the exact moment, I use a little torch for my Guinea pigs (not as loud since they have sensitive hearing)
Don’t birds need to be quarantined when being brought into a new home with other birds? Just wondering
will he eat your mix if you had feed it to him now?
i just got adult female cockatiel from a pet shop and she is very scared i leave her cage open and talk to her is there any tips..
Get it out.
How's Clyde doing in his no home?
The clipping of that poor bird is criminal
Do you recommend clipping tiel wings for training? We thought we should never clip
No, he was clipped before. They’ll nurture him while he recovers.
i need some tips for an african grey i rescued he will step up take treats and all that but he is terrified of hands near him at the same time any tips or info? please help
any info would help.
Maybe Clyde Needs a MRS
You're making me want to get a bird so bad watching your videos I guess my biggest question would be what should I look like how do I know I'm even compatible with a 🐦 what would be your best suggestion if you know having a bird as a pet I don't know how to make this choice like I I don't know if I'm even compatible to take care of one
It's a huge responsibility, so make sure you're all in and have the time to spend with a bird, they are wonderful to have❤❤❤❤♥️
@@carolhartley4448 unfortunately I suffer from bad anxiety a lot of the videos I see people say State huh but that's what I'm worried about the animals can feel what you're feeling and I'm worried that my anxiety you'll just give the poor thing a heart attack
I second fostering or birdsitting for a week at least to get a feel of what being around birds is like.
Why isn’t he biting Capri’s hand? He’s perching on her bare skinned right hand.
Birds need to fly for so many reasons. That is the way they get around. It is much safer for them to fly then not.
He's probably use to stepping up on a finger.
The food you are trying to give him is not suitable. This is one type of grain. You have to buy food for the bird, various grains, vitamins and dried fruit pieces.
my bird out of nowere dose not like me
Lol... if Clyde will touch you first day he isn't much project😄 get a project that bashes itself into the cage from freaking out just because you are in the same room and then educate us about project birds.
I don't understand what the video has to do with the topic of bringing a new bird home....I don't think you should start with clicker training when you bring a new bird home....a bit of topic if you ask me and not what people expect to see...
oof get away from a chiropractor and get seen by someone who cares about you
