  • Going into the 10th edition of Warhammer 40k, I find myself in need of a full set of tabletop terrain before I can start playing again. This video is about how I put together a relatively simple and cheap set of ruins to cover a game table in preparation for that first game.
    We will add more details to these pieces in the future and then begin adding new pieces to the collection. Check out my video about the easy DIY game table that I'll be using these on if you need some inspiration for such a project, and subscribe to see more budget friendly wargaming crafts in the future!
    The best rabbet tool that I can currently find on the market is here:

    Welcome to my channel where I am logging my efforts to increase my hobby skills as I reenter the world of tabletop wargaming. Having some old skills but little in the way of terrain and tools, I will be building up a collection over time and trying to show you how to make budget-friendly sci-fi terrain that looks good for your games of Warhammer 40k, Necromunda, Kill Team, Star Wars Legion, or whatever it is that you happen to play.

    I really like the way you create something usable first, then progressively enhance it. Very helpful video, thanks!

    Sponge on a much lighter grey...add buttress effects after and sprues for carrying wires with card junction boxes, posters...sandbags/boarded up doors and windows etc....all very easy.

      I did add stone texture and buttresses in the new video that I am editing now, along with upgraded basing materials.
      Posters and further paint embellishments will have to wait for a future piece of terrain, but I always forget about the possibility of boarding up windows for extra detail, thanks for the reminder!

    Add some baking soda/powder to your acrylic undercoat and then you can skip textured apray paint altogether

      I've done that before too, I need to get better at it for sure I always make it too thick and end up fighting the stuff. It ends up being a cost/time benefit equation- If I spend a few extra bucks on the spray I get to the next steps faster and with less frustration.

    If you want your terrain to be a bit more sturdy than foamcore allows, use sintra board. Its basically plastic foamcore and can take some serious punishment once glued with super glue.

    These are the tournament terrain footprints from 9th Edition. There's a new version of these with different sizes/layouts in the Leviathan Tournament Companion. They're doing a lot of 12x6 and 6x4 footprints.
    Also, you could make one of those Rabbets yourself using foam chunks, tape and a razor blade. That way you can adjust the depth to suit. I really do like the window template. Very good idea.

      Yeah I just needed a reference for what a reasonable amount of terrain looks like for 40k, and a set of dimensions so I wouldn't go crazy having to design something custom for myself. The 10th edition tourney maps weren't out yet when I started this project but I'm not really going too hard about playing tournament style so it works out for my needs- I also plan to replace pieces over time, but I really needed a 'full set' for now
      Ultimately I hope that people can take the process and any tips they may pick up and use it to make whatever constitutes "A full table of terrain" for their game of choice
      Thank you!

      @@green_zebra_crafting yeah, I went nuts with that 9th terrain setup, made 2-3 sets from chipboard like the Grimdark buildings Wyloch's Armory has. And showing 'what can be done' to make a table + of terrain is never a bad thing. Keep on cracking, like the terrain tutor says. 🙂

      @@green_zebra_crafting I am worried about the bases warping. Any plans to prevent that?

    • @green_zebra_crafting
      @green_zebra_crafting  Рік тому

      @@lynnmoore3684at this point in time the main plan on the bases was to use the flattest boards I had, utilize the buildings themselves as bracing to keep them mostly straight, and not soak the paper of the board too much when I get around to painting the base

    Dude there’s a new leviathan tournament companion, these are from last edition

    • @green_zebra_crafting
      @green_zebra_crafting  8 місяців тому

      Yeah I built these a few days before the Leviathan tournament stuff dropped. Luckily I play more casual games so I don't have to be beholden to the very... exact specs of the new tourney terrain.
      Hopefully the concepts continue to be helpful for folks just learning how to build terrain though

    I thought about making a buncha poly-styrene foam ruins / Terrain. I can make hills, caverns, and Mountains and hills, I tried some, and used KRYLON Foam Primer. You can spray-paint alot of cheap foam, (the furniture-packing garbage-foam everyone just throws away!), and it seals it, don't melt it and works awesome! NOT an endorsement, just a Time-Saver. Like the channel! Pick-up a can amazon is where I bought mine. Hope it helps Ya'!!!

      @@green_zebra_crafting I've only ever seen it on Amazon. Never in my crafting stores, but it works! it's a light grey so won't be too dark, if you get too-close will melt the foam (aerosol i suppose! from the spray can), but I love the stuff! Little pricy, but you making a buncha foam terrain, well worth it! get straight to fininshing it and painting! and YES! you can spray-paint over the primer, if you were curious.

    Well, using foamcore here in Germany is far away from "cheap" since you'll pay 30 € per sqm plus you have to find a shop that sells it in small quantities which makes it even more expensive...

    • @green_zebra_crafting
      @green_zebra_crafting  11 місяців тому +1

      That's unfortunate, it's $1.25 per sheet here. I wonder if sintra board is reasonably priced, relatively speaking? It's a higher cost alternative here but much higher quality.
      I've also seen that xps foam board can be difficult to acquire in at least some parts of the EU, is there a readily available material that you would recommend for folks in your area?
