  • In this Wargaming Terrain Tutorial this week I'll go through how to simply make your own custom battlemats. This project uses cheap and easy to find materials to make really effective battlemats of any size for your tabletop games and wargaming terrain. The setup for this project is quite quick and easy, and the hardest part is really waiting for the surface to dry. I'll show in the video how to get a quick playable surface painted up with some rattle cans, and also how to bring up some finer details to get a really great custom battlemat for any of your games. I'll be using this battlemat in the Walking Dead All Out War tabletop game, which does fit with a fair bit of the terrain I've built on the channel so far. You'll see in the video that it's easy to take this in any direction, whether you need one for Star Wars Legion, Warhammer 40k, or Dungeons and Dragons. Don't forget to like and subscribe if you enjoy this video, and if you would like to support the channel please see my Patreon link below.

    Really evocative, sets the scene for wasteland bandits or zombie hordes. With lots of skirmish games using small play areas, I could see making different little pattern mats becoming addictive

      Thank you. The only problem with this mat was that it was too small haha. Although it was made for The Walking Dead board game, which uses a 20 x 20 square mat, so it is the correct size. But I could see this being a fun theme to build out to a much larger surface.

      Thank you. I've done another video showing a slightly larger battlemat build, and in that one I used water instead of ISO alcohol to thin the mix, and this worked out fine. So if you do decide to give this a go, you can save yourself a few $$$ by substituting the ISO with water. Thank you for your comment!

    • @RFDHobby
      @RFDHobby  3 роки тому +2

      @@mariobaleywah1260 I think the best option may be to draw on the grid system once everything else has been painted on there. You could press in the grid system into the acrylic before it dries, but I'm not sure it would stand out, and you may run into issues while doing itas the acrylic dries fairly quickly. But with pen or marker, you could easily add a grid to this sort of thing. Hope this helps mate.

    The build looks good, it seams more durable than I was expecting because when I saw the coating I was concerned about the paint or coating cracking when rolled but it looks pretty solid. The paint job could use some work but the concept is solid and really only limited by ability to paint it.

    Neat and simple, just the way we want it!
    Two questions:
    1. Why the emphasis on having a perfect square with the exact dimensions? For most wargames "big enough" is good enough.
    2. What's the purpose of adding sand to the filler? What happens if you don't?

    • @RFDHobby
      @RFDHobby  3 роки тому +6

      Thanks for watching. I felt like having it neat and clean was fairly important, it's probably more important for me than it is required generally though. Adding sand to the filler will help with adding a texture to the finish. You could leave this out, however you will likely end up with a very smooth finish on the board. The sand doesn't make it gritty as such, but helps to give it a slightly rough surface. Both of these things are essentially optional I guess, but the small details will help to sell the idea when you're finished. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Great video, I'll be trying my hand at a few of these. It would be helpful if you put links to the products used in the description so folks can find it by its specifications rather than name.
    Here in the USA, the two key components are known as poly backed (or coated) canvas drop cloths and acrylic latex caulk. "Filler" usually means similar products used for driveway cracks or wood.
    In the last shot, it looks like the edges are curling up, presumably from the cured latex? I wonder whether, if you didn't have the plastic backing, you could apply a thin layer of caulk to that side to offset it, in the same way you would with white glue on chipboard.
