    “There are no right ways or wrong ways, it‘s only ‘right‘ if it grooves. If the technique‘s good but the groove is off, you‘re doing it wrong.“ These words from bass guitar phenom Victor Wooten ring true regarding the ancient art of slapping and popping bass guitars. Join Victor for a breakdown of slap bass technique, starting with the basics and working up to thumping through scales and adding dynamic rhythms to your playing. Get to practicing!

      @@magnusjohansson295 Thanks, Magnus. Since I posted this I've turned 71 years and picked up another acoustic guitar that I tune strictly to open 'D' (D,A,D,F#,A,D.) This gives chord voicing that I can't get in standard tuning. It's also like learning a different instrument. I also hooked up with an old band mate I hadn't seen in years. We're beginning to look for places like coffee houses to play. Forward is the only direction to go.

    You could play with spoons...if it sounded good. lol
    I play guitar, but I dabble in bass. The hammering without plucking is something I haven't considered, because guitars just seem to have more sustain since the strings are smaller and take less energy to pick.

    this whole philosophy of playing what feels good to you AND the listeners, as Victor points out, is so important. Sure, techniques will impress people, but the most memorable performances will be the ones that made you feel: and it's fine if your most memorable ones were the crazy awesome techniques that made you feel great (it's not like the two are always mutually exclusive), but I'm inclined to think some of everyone's favorite music isn't the most technically advanced pieces, but rather more focused on the expression/groove that captivated your feelings.
    in any case, for any aspiring professional musicians, I wish you all the luck in 2022 :D thank you for being inspired to make and share music with the rest of us!

      @mv9787 2 роки тому

      I use both; bouncing and going through with my thump, but in both cases i keep my thump parallel to strings. Bouncing is faster in some cases, going through gives more bottom to the sound and is a key to double thumping, which I learned only few months ago. Had to practise it for months before I figured it out. A good teacher would have taught it in a day I think 😏

    I’ve been practicing slap bass for the last three years and can bounce off, thumb through and double thumb. I have always been obsessed (perhaps a little too much)with not allowing any extraneous string noise, which is no easy task. In slap, muting and dampening is critical and more difficult than in finger style IMO. I vowed that I never wanted to use a a fret wrap either. It’s refreshing to see that even Victor has some string noise and open string ring when he plays and it reassures me that I’m headed in the right direction.
