Thinking musically too with Josh playing drums, drums are the foundation of most music. Especially with their songs. It makes it what it is, sets the tempo, groove, and overall feel for the song or even a specific part in a song. You may not always see or hear Josh, but he is there. That symbolism ties in perfectly to him being an angel
LOVE this video!! Recently I've been thinking a lot about how Christianity relates to their lyrics but then that inevitably led me to, "how does the lore fit in? are there Christian parallels?" especially when considering how Vialism is a false religion. Before watching this, I'd never thought about the Torchbearer being similar to/symbolic of an angel, but it makes so much sense (particularly, as you pointed out, with the Navigating MV). Definitely something for me to chew on for a bit. This also might be stretching it a bit, but viewing the Heathens MV in context of Josh being an angel also parallels Acts 12, where an angel leads Peter out of prison.
i like this theory and it makes a lot of sense. the only thing is i remember an interview (maybe with zane lowe?) from tyler where he said he was writing trench imagining a world without god. so for me, the banditos represent the things that get tyler through when he’s struggling with religion and faith. when those things aren’t in sight. friends, family, fans etc.
heathens is definitelyyyyy part of the lore! tyler even said if heathens wasn’t accepted for suicide squad it would have ended up on trench. also tyler has the same cut on his nose as jumpsuit/the outside etc. 👀
this is such a good explanation! But didn't Tyler and Josh confirm that anything with a name that gets mentioned in any video is in fact, flesh and bone? correct me if i'm wrong lol :)
the lore, much like their songs, has double meaning. so there’s the literal meaning, which is what they are in the universe. then their other meaning is what they represent in more of real-life context. so, for example, dema and trench are physical places, but they’re also state of mind. but, that being said, this video was just one way to interpret the torchbearer.
When the first thing you read is "Josh Dun is an angel?" It confused me bc I wasn't thinking of the lore so it confused me.
he might be irl lol
@groovyghostnotes oh btw for the series that you cover the lyrics of songs can you cover "Fireworks" by "Plain white It's"?

never thought about it like that, that’s a really cool take
I've been a Twenty One Pilots fan since I was a kid in 2015 I'm now 16 almost 17 and I'm locking in on this lore lol Love your easy explanations:)
i’m glad you like it!
i love love LOVE this theory!!!! i’ve always admired tyler’s use of religious symbolism and references in the lore. i’m so glad you brought this up!!
i’m glad you liked it!!
Yes, I agree; it just seems like that's what Josh/TorchBearer is meant to represent (a protector)

Omg love how you brought up that Acts 12 reference. I don’t think ur stretching it at all! It seems to parallel perfectly with Paul in prison omg!!

I just thought Josh wasn't real 😔
YES FINALLY
7:50 I thought you said “Asgardian Angels” for a split second.
i wouldn’t put it past me to talk about Asgard
So crazy they gave Josh fake tattoos for the Heathens video considering how many real ones he has! Super interesting.
this is such a good explanation!
