  • A squirrel named Shirley moves in on the bird feeder and a physicist dreams up new ways to foil her. A rotating shield initially blocks her, but with each physicist’s innovatrion, Shirley uses her squirrel brain amd powerful ability to climb, balance and juimp to solve the problem and munch on the bird seeds. Along the way are some spectacular fails and amazing successes for this wild animal. These Fox Squirrel imported from the East Coast are admirable and irritating adveraries for sure.

This reminds me of similar experience I had a few years ago. After failing many times, my last attempt was to sit in a lawn chair nearby with a garden hose, and patiently wait for squirrel attempts. I forgot how most of this episode went except for the last thing. As I sat silently by, like a statue, a small young squirrel slowly walked closely by my chair toward the feeder. Then an older and much wiser squirrel ran right up to him and chirped something in his ear, which caused him to look over at me. It scared him so much, he jumped straight up in the air and ran off. I think this proves they have a language all their own.

Then he persuaded the neighbors to chop down their fence line trees, didn't work. Covered the fence line with nails, didn't work. Covered the base of the tree in metal sheeting, didn't work. Used various deterrent animal urine, didn't work. Then had the longest branches of the tree professional chopped down and put out traps, caught a few, but that ultimately didn't work. So true. The only approach I have seen that "works" is to have a platform that launches said squirrel, triggered as they pause to get their balance. Of course, "squirrel-guns" are generally frowned upon since they could be pregnant etc. My grandfather used to launch them onto a little trampoline... I think they enjoyed it more than if they had gotten to the seed... who wins?? If you believe in chemical weapons, put some Cheyanne pepper powder in with the bird seed and vaseline the approach so they "shake it up good first". The birds are not susceptible to the flavor of pepper. By the way, peppers like this are rich in vitamin C -which is reflected in its cost. Don't let the squirrels bankrupt your bird-feeding endeavor.
And don't get me started about my hummingbird nectar feeder. Me, I feed squirrels first, then birds second. You have not seen anything until you have seen a squirrel addicted to sugar water. You don't want to go there...

After various ways of dealing with them. I gave up. I can control my trees but not the neighbors'. The family just jumped from one tree to another. because this attachments are irrational and unfair but we make the rules so does't matter. If an alien race made of ants would see what we do to ants, like pouring molten aluminum on them to make art, they would flip out and kill us all with "human spray". Same if an alien race of mosquito derivates will arrive on earth, fall in love with their malaria transmitting cousin from Africa and decide they are cute, have cute trumpets, and impressively articulated legs, with superb fibonaci ratios, and we the humans are hideous monsters which slap the shit out of them when we get the chance. So it's all subjective tribalism bullshit. And that's a fact. But we don't care about facts basically. We love dogs, as such dogs have rights, but pigs don't. We can kill and eat them. And if pigs do, rabbits don't. And if they do, chickens don't... so we can kill them and eat them.. so on.. to entire life and non life. There is a fake arbitrary/subjective line you need to draw in the sand. And that's wrong. Because it's a lie. There is no line. It will never be. And when you base your decisions on lies, everything gets fucked up and you get confused. None of it makes sense in the sense you want. Because the thing you want - is wrong and does not make sense in this universe. Is like wanting to pass trough a brick wall. The laws of the universe are set, and don't care about you or what you want. And everything comes down to power. If you have power you do whatever you want and decide on what others do and don't. But scales beyond the individual. If a group of people - called a country - decide that dogs have rights - you can't eat your dog in that country because you go to jail. Meaning they use their collective power against you. You can't rebel against millions of people, and if you do you are like the moskito i slap when is too greedy with his blood sucking procedure. But where that law does not apply, they eat dogs - like China and Corea - and that's right. Because right means whatever you want to mean, and as long as you have the power to enforce it, and delude yourself accordingly, you are "justified". So if you have a big military you do that. That why you should pay attention to your military because violence is the ultimate form of expression of that power. If you don't have it, somebody else will and will dictate how should you run your life. That's our entire morality and ethics in a nut shell. The shock for most people is when they rely realize is exactly like that. But most don't want to realize it. Because realizations usually have consequences, but because the layered delusion - it remains misunderstood and the system is kept as it is. It's all subjective. It all revolves around our subjective human bullshit. You can love your squirrels just fine, don't let others tell you squirrels are not as worthy of your admiration as birds are as you point out - because are just some rats with tree climbing abilities - so what? . At the same time realize it's your subjective admiration mumbojumbo and don't enforce it on others - unless you want to face the consequences. Some people will attack you back. There are people who hate squirrels with passion, because they destroyed their multi million dollar crops, or houses, or plans and future. No different then you might hate annoying flies or blood sucking mosquito. And if you try to enforce your shit on them, they might attack you back and enforce their shit on you. And that's ok. Because your action and their action is in equivalence, and if is your subjective interpretation that it isn't.. it rely does not matter - because is not about some interpretation - is about power. So you fight for what you rely want.. and build the world you want to live in. I personally love squirrels - they are so cute - especially when they are angry moving that tail :)) but at the same time i love everything else.. from butterflies to slimy snails and venomous snakes. Life in all it's diversity is wonderful. And that's a fact. Wonder means you are constantly surprised and intrigued about the complexity of it when you are not ignorant about it. For example, we still don't have an AI as capable as that squirrel yet. We have supercomputers of the size of many football fields connected together, and the algorithm running in them is not as capable as whatever runs in that 1 cubic centimeter of squirrel brain. Actually i think is much less then 1 cubic centimeter. Need to look that up. (i did - it is 10560000000x more volume dense auci - for 1 football field, racks of 2 meter high) Imagine how sophisticated each creature rely is. From the spider that carries it's little babies in its home made cocoon to the human which can wipe out all life on this planet. At the same time, i know is my subjective setup. Its a pretty useful setup. If you use it, it allows you to rely understand what is going on with less delusion then other subjective setups.

A pleasant presentation Sir! I always enjoy seeing how clever and agile these guys are! Our solution was far less complicated though. We hung the bird feeders from the soffit of our house, and put a SQUIRREL feeder on each of the five nearest trees. That made it much easier for them to get what they want with little effort. So now, they leave the bird feeders alone. As far as the cost... it's bird feed. Availability? No problem here because our state government is not quite as fascist as CA..The term "lock-down" has no place in any free country. That's for prisons. Fun? Well your video is fun!
