Also there was an official project similar to that where Mojang and LEGO attempted to make a game together called "BrickCraft" but it never came to be just like "Rock Raiders 2"

I was one of those weird kids who never had opportunity to play with 90s lego being a 2000s kid. But I was obsessed with Rock raiders, Alpha team and Adventures, discovering themes that I found so much more appealing that came before my time
I feel very similarly - while I liked a lot of early 2000s stuff, I yearned for early 90s sets. 😊
i was born in 2001 and i had an older friend tell me about rock raiders when we were playing with power raiders sets. felt like an ancient legend he was bestowing upon me
Exact same here, also helped that the my country had a lot of stores with forgotten toy sections still stocking the older sets sometimes. They were always cool and mysterious to me

I'm so blown away by the molded Prototype Slug design @ 3:09. It perfectly captures the look of early 2000s Lego creatures. Surely someone out there can resin-cast that Slug. So many 3rd party sellers are making their own molded parts and accessories for Lego. I would snatch up 10 of those slugs in a heartbeat! 🤑
Something recently occurred to me; Given that Rock Raiders canonically takes place on the Planet U, and the Rock Raiders arrived there on a spaceship, do you think it could be argued that Rock Raiders is technically a space theme?

@@RRSlugger Since it is mostly focused on underground, but takes place in space, I kind of see it as a spin-off of Lego Space - it takes place in the same universe, but focuses on a different setting within the universe.
Is this even an argument? Of course RR is a space theme!
It's 100% a space theme, just a bit more unconventional due to the lack of any actual space ship sets.
Remember that most of the space themes still had their fair share of surface vehicles, rovers, atmospheric craft, etc., Rock Raiders just leans fully into those.
I consider it in the same spot as Aquazone: Definitely in space or the future, but in a specific biome (underwater and underground) that defines it. So it's an extension or spin-off of sorts.
Last year I was stuck in a boiling campsite with a broken down car, no power, and no seating. There was wifi though, and Summer of Slug helped me enjoy my time.. Thanks so much for bringing this back again!

I never played the game but I liked the theme cause Jet was the first girl minifig that didn’t just look like 🙂 but with eyelashes/lipstick, the rock monster, and the teal pieces. I think I had the drill arm thing, and maybe a couple of the small cheap sets and lastly the like $200 base. Looking back I wouldn’t have gone so hard in the theme but I’m glad I can authentically share in the nostalgia 😌
RR was the last lego theme I got into before just focusing on Lego Star Wars although I did get that mid 00s knight set just to have a horse. It came with the purple and black knight too.
Adventure (Egypt), UFO, and especially ninja were my 90s Lego childhood 😎
For me, this is the best LEGO channel on UA-cam! 🏆 There is no such atmosphere anywhere else. 😊 Thank you, Slugger, for your creativity, which showed me how cool the original LEGO themes were (as opposed to modern licensed ones). This is coming from someone who has never owned a Rock Raiders set, is familiar with the series only from pictures in promotional catalogs, and has played a bit of PS video games. 😅

A celebration has occurred!
A major Rock Raiders anniversary and the start of Summer of Slug is quite a good day indeed!
Very cool of Brandon to connect RR and City Space. Been trying to do the same, mainly by making Power Cells that reference RR and PM. Also wanted to make a Mining Laser for the big Rover like you see on the Chrome Crusher but it didn't look too fitting so I just went with the Space color scheme instead for now.
But yea it would've been some sort of tech relic from the Rock Raiders that got repurposed for this new mission.
Ahh I remember going to a hotel for some sort of work convention thing my dad had to go to and there I constructed the *Chrome Crusher*. It was the first LEGO set I had received for like 4 years, I only had the generic bucket and the chewed remnants of the pirate set I was too young for up to that point. I shortly after discovered my best friend had a treasure trove of sets and a PC game featuring the vehicle I had just built and my “Golden Age” had begun. Such great memories, until the Great Plague of 2002 where it all came crumbling down.
I actually managed to find a new in box Chrome Crusher at one of my local retired lego shops! It’s my first Rock Raiders set, but I do have very fond memories of the video game when I was young.

Rock raiders and adventurers are my favorite themes. I grew a little late to experience the sets first hand but as a child I remember being fascinated but the older lego themes especially when I would find peices of the sets in my school that was donated a large lego lot. I remember feeling crazy not being able to find any of the sets or peices in store only realizing now that they were long retired by that time. Thank you for helping me relive and better understand my childhood lol.

Rock raiders the videogame and Lego in general were formative in my childhood. I didn't own many of the sets themselves, but I loved the world they created and the ideas that they'd foster in me for the decades to come. Now all these years later I still have many things I owe to it.

Also to add up to my first comment,I feel very lucky to be born in 1993 because in 1999, when this theme released, my parents bought me the full set.(excluding the tunnel transport)
So having first hand full set in age 6 and up to age 10,these my main play pieces.Especially the working laser.Ironically i never heard out the pc game of this

Last year, I was having a bad time during the summer. After 2022 had wrapped so badly for me, the ascendancy I had expected and hoped for ended in early 2023, having barely gotten off the ground.
My year did not get better until October, but the first Summer of Slug was really a welcome distraction. Summer was not good, but was lightened considerably by all your content! All throughout the time between the end of that one and the start of this one, I hear the intro jingle in my head every now and then!
I'm so happy to see the tribute here paid to what came before you, to inspire you to make this content and share it with all of us!
And, as usual, I am supremely excited for another Summer of Slug!!

In an era where traditional toy enthusiasts blame changing technology on the decline in popularity, Lego had the perfect model where video games supported the sets and vice versa. For me personally, it was the Alpha Team game getting me into the sets
The Alpha Team game is *so good* - not even just "for a LEGO game", but a legitimately good puzzle game in its own right. I never played it as a kid, but was shocked when I tried it for the first time this year. That game rocks!
My very first introduction of Rock Raiders was an old DK picture book. Seeing the old rock monster was really a sight to behold for the first time

In hindsight, it's amazing how many Rock Raiders sets were being bought and played with into the 2000s as folks played the game and got hand me down sets! Or at least, that was my experience

With me, I fell in love with the sets because I was already an avid follower of the Lego Magazine by that point, and got the Rock Raiders Crew and SEVERAL instances of the small set with Jet on the hover scooter (it was the easiest way to get more FEMALE minifigures to balance out my extremely male-skewed demographics at the time). Rock Raiders immediately mixed with my UFO, Insectoids, miscellaneous Space, Adventurers, Freestyle, Time Cruisers/Twisters, Pirate, Town, and Castle in an eclectic "all things Lego" world I had going on.
I played the videogame first in what must've been like 2002 or 2003 and was not impressed and could not get very far. I played Lego Island and Lego Racers to death.
Can't wait to see Slugger's chest hair grow with each new instalment of this year's Summer of Slug!

Funny how I had a similar experience as a 00's kid.
Got the Rock Raiders PC game from a neighbor and fell in love with the world, wanting to learn everything about the theme and it's LEGO sets. I only ever got a partial Chrome Crusher as a kid, but have bought a few of the other sets as an adult, partially inspired by this channel!

Oh god, Rock Raiders 2/Block Raiders. That was... a trip and a half. I remember that they kept insisting that the game HAD to be a Minecraft clone but with Rock Raiders inspired tech, despite the massive amount of negative feedback letting them know that they're better off not trying to compete with what was basically an untouchable juggernaut at the time.
Right? Haha, pretty surreal looking back on it now. 😅

HOLY BRICKONIUM SLUGMAN!!! 25 years of Lego Rock Raiders? THAT'S AWESOME!!! I should really try to recollect the Rock Raiders Crew set, (sadly, unless the artificial inflation ever goes down, I won't be getting Chief). Sadly, I need to reacquire it, as many of my old Rock Raiders minifigs are in pieces, and poor Docs has a cracked torso. Hmm, maybe next payday I will collect the old crew once again, this time putting them on one of my typeset tray minifig displays.
Anyways, good job as always Slugger, and may the bricks be with you!
Oh, and P.S. Since Jamie never actually finished the Wild West Retrospective series, maybe you should finish them out? It's only missing the Native American/Indian sets, so, maybe there's a short miniseries in there somewhere?

I had no idea it's RR's aniversary! Which I've had a simular introduction with still my favoite theme by seeing the game on a demo disk then buying a few sets on ebay as they were discontiued. Which I need to play the game again given it's been a few years and the aniversary.
Its sad i can't experience the summer of slug...if only i lived in the northern hemisphere, but instead im stuck with the winter that slug uploads a lot.

Even though I only ever had the Rock Raiders figure set and later a rock monster from a flea market, I still feel some sort of weird connection with the theme. So,... cheers!

I myself didn't know that the Rock Raiders theme existed until five or six years ago, with a fair portion of what I do know coming from the third episode of "Lego Rewind" if you are familiar. It describes how the theme's color scheme "flies in the face of color theory" because of how unconventional it is next to the monochromatic and analogous color schemes found in some other themes of the time (apart from possibly some of the early Star Wars sets). But something that we often forget about the original shade of brown (often called "Mata brown" or "Earth orange") is that it was first introduced in 1974, four years before the introduction of articulated minifigures. But for much of its first decade, the only parts the color was used for were minifigure hair and brooms, and wasn't widely used until around 1984 when the first standard bricks began appearing in this color. But even the 1x1 plates in that color (seen at 5:27) only came in two non-promotional sets, which were the Star Wars Darth Maul bust (10018) from 2001, and the "Wright Flyer" (10124) from mid-2003. Additionally, the MOC at 5:38 has one of the crew members with a hair piece that did not exist yet in 1999, having been introduced in the first wave of the "Alpha Team" theme from March 2001. Though the black version of it seen there wasn't introduced until June of 2002 if you remember...
Absolutely right! It's a similar situation with Dark Grey - a very old colour, but one that spent most of its life fulfilling niche roles, only getting a sizable brick palette for a few years towards the end.

I just discovered that in a Lego Island 2 fishing mini game there is a picture of a slimy slug in the top left corner
That makes a lot of sense actually, as there are slimy slugs later on in the game outside Ogel's base!

Wake up babe! The summer of slug started
Im like this with Bionicle. It has been my favorite theme since i got my first Toa, and Ive envested a ton of my time into the series, from the books, comics, and games! The reboot crushed me, it was like my favorite author rebooting a book series before concluding it.
As for the games, there is actually a series of games that tells the story of Takua the Chronicler, aka the matoran that would become the Toa of Light! Or rather, one game on rhe GBA called Lego Bionicle where you venture across Mata Nui as a custom Matoran, that happens to be canonically the Chronicler, and the next is a point and click adventure game that used to be on the Bionicle site that acts as a direct sequel story wise to Lego Bionicle, taking off immediately at the end of that game. In the P&C adventure game, you pretty much adventure more across Mata Nui to the different Koro, aka the villages, and complete quests of sorts. You eventually finish the game where i believe the Bionicle movie starts?
It's been like a decade since then, so i probably got a few details wrong, but the two definitely flow one into the other. There's also a sequel to the first point and click adventure that stars Hahli, the second Chronicler, that involves playing Kohli, but i never could finish that game because i was playing on a library computer.
I REALLY want to play through those games again.
