It's traditional where I am from to give someone a "silver" coin when they give you knife. Something about it making it a transaction rather than a gift, so if the recipient cuts themselves it's not then the fault of the giver.

The part at the end about getting "/the/ knife" hit home for me. Mine is an original Leatherman PST my Papa gave me after getting sick of me borrowing(read: stealing) it all the time, and it sort of officially became mine when he passed--in that he specified in his will that it would pass to me along with his swiss army knife.

Hey Xyla! Great video! Just a heads-up, but it looks like you might be routing in the wrong direction. You always want to rout in a counter-clockwise direction if looking at the piece from above, which will mean that you are pushing the router in such a way that the spinning bit will be cutting into the material. If you rout in a clockwise direction (as seen from above) the router bit will act as a sort of 'wheel' and will want to pull the router along and often-times results in less-than-ideal results. Great table by the way!

I'm pretty sure she was climb cutting on purpose. Conventional cutting with epoxy might chip it, with climb cutting the cutter compresses the epoxy as it enters and the cut depth goes to zero at exit to avoid chipout. Yes, you have to be more careful to control the router, but this ain't her first rodeo. 🙂

As a boy who grew up in somewhat traditional America not long ago... My first knife was a terrible multitool from my grandma. I didn't think much of it at the time. Later, she gave me a nice leatherman. Something I still have today. I didn't wear it for many years, but now I wear it almost every day as a tractor mechanic. It's the single handiest tool I own, and I can't tell you how many times it's saved my butt.

In the Netherlands (and I'm sure other places as well) there's a tradition that you can't give knives as gifts, because they cut the friendship. So whenever you want to give someone a knife, you instead offer them a small amount of currency, could be a nickle or a dime, and then offer them the knife for sale at that exact amount. I'm not sure where this tradition comes from and lots of people even here don't know about it, but I think it's rather fun and observe it whenever I gives knives away.
That said, that's a pretty cool looking knife you got there Xyla!

I watched Tony’s video first. Welcome to the knife for life club! Mine is a Swiss Army knife given to me by my brother at his wedding. Three months after having I live in my pocket constantly it found it’s true purpose. A young man had an extremely bad day compounded by finding out that his favorite grandparent just passed on. I had just happened to be at the right place, at the right time, with the right tool, in pocket. I was jacked up on adrenaline and some how held him up against the wall with one arm whiles fishing around in my pocket for my new knife and cutting him down. That night I called my brother and fell apart for the first time that day letting him know what his knife let me do for a young man in need. 37 years later, scuffed and with a small chip out of the corner of the red plastic near the cross, I still have that knife.
    Alan
(P.s. I lied... the first video I watched was your rocket tree)
Happy Holidays, I wish you the very best, and thanks for sharing.

It took me a while to notice there were still coin batteries in some of those boards... Is the exothermic reaction of the resin and using the heatgun really not hot enough to cause issues? Overall though, it's a great aesthetic!

"I never had a boyhood." I agree with the Flash Girls song, "A Girl Needs a Knife" so all of mine were given one.* They're just so useful.
    * Some came from my dad, who's from Appalachia where they have a folk superstition about not giving knives or scissors as presents. So they actually were gifted a dollar or quarter they could use to "buy" their knife from him. :-D

I was surprised to find out you are from Cleveland and went to Case. I am also from Cleveland, went to CSU for a BChE then Purdue for my MS in Chem Eng. I am retired after nearly 40 years in the chemical industry. I like your energy and enthusiasm. I am really glad to see more young women in engineering. Your channel will help pave the way for lots more Women in engineering. Keep up the good work.
