Don't forget to check out Lindsay's video and subscribe to her channel! ua-cam.com/video/QOz1nmEOknE/v-deo.html (10/10 recommend her own shop build video, it has been super inspirational and so many #shopgoals, I was very hype when she agreed to help me with mine)
I cannot emphasize enough how much she carried me through this project when I had too much going on in life to be able to make quick decisions or even get moving on it. Thank you thank you thank you Lindsay, you are welcome back anytime

I'm really glad to see you back online and I'm looking forward to seeing what you can do in there. Good luck.
How To : Create a Garage Workshop/Studio.........the video we didn't realize we Needed, thx Xyla :)
Hi
welcome back Lady... congrats on surviving your latest obstacle in the road, and coming through bigger and brighter... Love and hugs, looking forward to your future endeavors... major props to your awesome team/friends... ~~Just me, RD
The "mystery" wood panels were there for the reason you mentioned later: you can't really screw anything into drywall. But if you add a wood panel, you can screw anything into that, and at any interval.
But it's still anchored by drywall which is not good
Actually they looked like the back boards of some shelves, you can see what looks like lines on them where the shelves had been.
@@j5892000 Presumably (ymmv), the backboards, whatever their purpose, were also anchored by screws directly into wall studs, not just drywall anchors.
@@davidlowson100 That's the point -- that's exactly what you would do with this, attach stuff to it, like shelving. -- The idea here is that you can put up shelves without anchoring anything to drywall.
What I'm working on right now to separate the two car garage (mine) from the single car garage (hers) is I put in some metal shelving (the kind with mdf shelves) between the two and attached plywood sheets to them. Voila! A wall! I rent too and really didn't want to go through the hassle with building an actual wall. Besides, I've got storage with the shelves...
I couch-surfed a fair bit in the first few years after college. Having welcoming, generous friends was so important. And so was being one. I had friends surf my couch plenty of times, too. I could still name several folks, some of whom I haven't seen in decades, that I know would welcome me into their homes for as long as I needed, and they know the same would be true of me for them. It's a good, safe feeling to remind myself of that.
And my shop looks almost as organized as yours at the end of the video, for about a day, once or twice a year.
As someone who has an epoxy floor almost exactly like that - you're going to regret that speckled finish the first time you drop a screw or other small part. That stuff is like dropped-screw camouflage.
Just hold a flashlight near parallel to the floor and sweep it like a search light. The shadow from the dropped hardware will stand out like a soar thumb.
Its also dirt and scratch camouflage
Use a magnet!
@@MikeB12800 Only works on steel and some stainless steel screws.
🤣🤣🤣
After being evicted I can only imagine the anxiety you must have felt investing mind and money in fixing up another rental property. Hope your new landlords treat you respectfully. To judge you by the quality of your friends, you deserve the world.
What a transformation, love the new space Xyla!
First class, Brad... first class! I follow both your channel and Xyla's - love them both!
Lindsay is such a GREAT FRIEND!!! She deserves millions of hugs 🤗
Coming back to this video after hearing you’re getting evicted, sorry to hear this is happening to you especially after the time and work you invested into the workspace. I really enjoyed this video and the process of you working on the workshop, hope the next one feels like home too 👍
It's like what happened with Ben over at Woby Designs, he lost his shop space on short notice too and ended up in a much better space after the terror of not knowing how he would land. Congrats on the space, we're all looking forward to more great stuff from the new locale!
Wow, your landlord must love you! The difference you've made to that shop is amazing. Must have added a fair amount to its value - if someone wants a workshop they'll be bowled over with yours in comparison to how it was before.
this aged well lol
@@xylafoxlin I know. So sorry to hear what's happened. Really hope you can find somewhere more permanent soon Xyla.
I almost didn't realize how much I missed you when you weren't making videos. I'm extremely stoked for what's to come in the next season of Xyla Foxlin videos. This workshop is going to be the setting of great things.
sorry to hear about the eviction but glad to hear you're okay and that you've got a new place already. new shop looks awesome, really nice work there!
The shop looks absolutely amazing! Can't wait to see what projects come out of it!
That eviction might have been a blessing in disguise!
This shop looks so much more practical and I am sure you re gonna spend a ton of nice hours in there. The white ceiling and rafters definitely brightens the place up.
As a Dutch person, this whole eviction and uncooperative landlord business is a bit foreign to me. I hope you did not end up losing too much money on the whole situation!
Glad to see you found a new home
Are there many Americans that immigrate to Netherlands? Asking for a friend
@@SilverScarletSpider It's not that rare seeing how we have decent relations, a lot of US companies have offices here and we have the highest rate of people that speak English for a non-native English speaking country, so job opportunities are decent even if you don't speak Dutch.
@@SilverScarletSpider I've got two colleagues from the US that live here now.. 😇
@@SilverScarletSpider Thats my plan eventually.
Didn’t she fill her neighbors apartment with toxic xylene fumes? If I were a landlord, I would certainly evict a tenant who was that thoughtless about her neighbors. There are two sides to every story.
Congrats on the new space! Looks fantastic. You could look into duck boards for the back half if you don't need to roll things around. They're cheap and easy to make. The dirt/chips fall thru the gaps, keeping them out of the way, and they lift up easily for cleaning!
I am so glad you had Lindsay on board for this! She must be a lifesaver. And having the perfect paint tool for hitting all that stuff on the ceiling and rafters is a nice bonus!
and omg what an extraordinary amount of work for a rental space!
the result looks amazeballs. Very excited for you, and looking forward to seeing more from this shop!
Can’t wait for all of the new adventures! Keep doing what you do!
Congrats for everything! All well deserved! Can't wait to see what crazy amazing projects come out of this new awesome place!
Awesome transformation! I love the before vs after walkthrough at the end. Dramatically improved 😍
Good to see you are back! A nice setup for your future projects!
I've been evicted myself, and it's pretty scary. I'm glad you had a good network of friends who could help, and that you're bouncing back. Hope your new living space is close to the workshop.
Eviction can be scary 😢
Couchsurfing with kind friends is everything when faced between that and homelessness
If you're really evicted you're a twit... You screwed someone out of money and held their property in limbo.. likely also caused damage.
This seems like a pandemic in itself from what a lot of my friends in the states are telling me.
@@Martyr217 for real, half of the online personalities from the US that I've ever seen have been homeless at some point
@@bacicinvatteneaca sounds like a reflection of YOUR particular tastes more than anything else!
@@milton480h Maybe true, I'd like to know your argument relating Thingaloo's taste and homeless/online-personalities. But, regardless, a great many are trapped in the homeless/rental dilemma, especially in the UK 'rental' is often 4+ times what a mortgage/loan would be, but rental-drain and 'rules' mean they can't do much other than rent. Catch-22. For years/decades employment opportunities have declined to 'service/minimum-wages' and fickle employment terms that barely cover rental before utility-bills and food/travel/living expenses. If for whatever reason you can't afford the rent = homeless, then it's really difficult. No 'home-address', no 'bank-account', no other transferable skills/experience, no savings, no capital etc; sometimes just the clothes on their back. It's got little to do with 'tastes'. So what do they do?
Just wow! I am so happy for you and I can’t wait to see how it fuels your inspiration. That bench Restauration was already a great project at your new shop!
You just make all of this feel so accessible when so many shop youtubers don't. Such an inspiration, so excited for your next steps!
The new shop looks AMAZING!!! Yall did some fantastic work to get it into the state it is now
The old work bench is beautiful, definitely a treasure find left there by someone who didn't know what they had.
It's great to see you again and I'm looking forward to whatever comes next 🤝🤝🤝🤗🤗👍👍👍🇺🇸
Always great to have good friends who help you out when you need it. Fantastic shop renovation! The before/after walkthrough was really impressive. The new space is fun and inspiring. Can't wait to see what comes out of it. Thanks for sharing!
New Shop looks amazing..! I really love how the workbench looks. Great Job Xyla and Lindsay
I can identify with eviction, my last two moves were short notice evictions thanks to frankly odd choices by the landlords, the move we have planned for the week after next is gladly one we have planned and budgeted for AND it comes with a significant upgrade to my shop/hobby space. It's still its own flavor of stressful but also exciting, can't wait to see what you make in your new space.
Evictions are not a short process. Evictions take 30 days after you get a letter of eviction. Being evicted is your problem because you wasted your entire time not doing anything and thinking you can stay longer. Once a notice is given you have 2 choices. Move or pay your back rent with additional rent.
@@kameljoe21 Depends on the state and rental agreement.
@@ionstorm66 Evictions still take a month. It is a court process. As soon as you have been informed that you are being evicted you have a few weeks to 3 months before you have to be out.
@@kameljoe21 In Florida its 3 days for non payment or 7 days to vacate for any other breach of contract. Other states have similar or shorter.
@@ionstorm66 This is not an eviction. 3/7 business days notice is for a landlord to give you notice of breach of contract/lease. If you do not leave in that amount of time, the landlord will file a complaint which can take up to 2 weeks to process a writ of possession. This is an eviction, once the Sheriff department comes and tosses you and your property on the street. You can be given notice to vacate at anytime by your landlord.
Well done! I can relate to this really well. To get evicted without notice and have to move a chaotic mess of parts and tools to a new space in a day or two with help from amazing people. You're right, the emotional labour is intense and just consumes you. I'm glad it worked out for you.
I've definitely missed your content, but this makes it all make sense and is so worth it. Absolutely looking forward to seeing what you create in this space!
Incredible new chapter in an incredible space. Can't wait to see what comes out of your new shop. Congrats and good luck Xyla!
Can't wait to see what you create next. Go girl!
You're having so much fun. It's bloody brilliant! Love the new shop. Great work ToF (Team of Friends)!
The Team of Friends is the best thing about these videos. They always save the day.
Wow congrats, Xyla on your new shop! It’s beautiful you two did a great job. Very inspirational. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Xyla! What an amazing transformation. For you as well as the shop. Lindsay was amazing to be there helping you through all of it. Best of luck
That is really nice! The carpet is great and I would have extended it to the rest of the shop. In my workshop it really makes standing for long periods more comfortable. Check out Stumpy Nub's vid on his second hand carpet tiles for a cheap option (upcycling for a win) and how easy it is. Also if you have a spill/large drip of Botal Toat, you just pull up the damaged tile and whack down a new(ish) one. The one other thing is: if you want to control dust movement from the front section to the back, you may need to block the upper part of the wall in the rafters and some sort of covering for the arch/opening. A cheap curtain with magnets sewn into the edges and steel strip to match on the walls would be an easy and removable option.
That looks amazing Xyla, and awesome seeing you bouncing back after your couch surfing stint. The work bench is awesome, and the brass handles with a bit of patina are a perfect match for it. I must say I did have a mini heart attack when you took to the bench top with the electric plane, cause most people would've gone deep to clean it up and smooth it completely, but just skimming it to flatten and refresh it a little while keeping it's character was the perfect move. That said, the rest of the garage/workshop looks top notch too, but I'm a sucker for old tools, and workshop equipment in general. I still have, and use my Grandfathers work bench that he built some time around the 30's, or early 40's (we think), as well as a few of his old hand tools.
Welcome back, Xyla! So excited to see you releasing a new video, but also feel so great for you for having a friend who helped you through the hard time!
That workbench is beautiful, love that you were able to snag that and refurbish it! What a great shop, I look forward to seeing what you create in there.
Just found you. I'm mainly into travel, camping when I can, so your trailer build was first for me, and that was so good! Now I see way so much talent. I don't want to subscribe to yet another channel, but I put a reminder on my phone to check you out again in a week or so, and probably I won't be able to resist. Wow, you are so talented. ( * I just read more of your history now - double wow. But what I really like is that you are not intimidated by projects, and so determined. I'm somewhat smitten right now *) Good luck Xyla. * back for a couple more comments. My first flight was in a Piper Cub, at WSMR, Condron Field. I moved on to the 150, and flew a Mooney from time to time. I worked with Pixar (electronics), and had a couple of times where I did some custom electronics for Imagineering, all a very long time ago when I owned my own company. Your tour around the shop enlightened me! I'm retired now, trying to stay interested in things. You peaked my interest tonight. I will have to subscribe. I wish you the best.
Congrats on the shop place🥂
Congratulations on the new shop. I absolutely love that you saved, and what you did, with that workbench! Phenomenal job! It looks amazing. ❤️
Now I’m drowning in shop envy. That’s a beautiful workspace, and getting all those high grade tools at once must be such a satisfying experience.
But where’s the dust management? All the nice memorabilia and fresh paint are going to disappear under a thick layer of dust once you start putting all those awesome saws to work.
UA-cam has tons of great videos on clever and effect dust management systems. Would love to see you add to that with something creatively optimized for your shop and your projects.
Glad you are back good to see you land on your feet
That turned out great! I've officially been shamed into at least tidying up my cluttered garage.
What an awesome shop re-do. Glad to see you back. Thanks for the run through. I am currently re-doing my shop and I have to hit the shelves. Your vid helped me with kinda how to approach it. Part of being a smart person is knowing when to listen to other smart people!!
Welcome back! I've seen you a lot on IG, but I'm glad you were able to find something better than you had. Looking forward to all of the projects you are going to create in the new space!
Xyla, it would be really cool to get a video reaction of the owner/landlord seeing how nice the garage and bench they left behind looks now. But that most likely already happened.
And when they do, and see it looking so nice, they evict her for something trivial, then demand massively more rent from the next person ...
@@Tekwyzard Happened to me once, fixed up a house and suddenly the landlord demanded more rent because the value went up after the fix up.
In my experience with landlords.. they'd probably raise the rent a few hundred a month. A crumbly, dim, blah garage/shop is only worth so much. But now It's a well lit, properly useful, full-on workspace. So yeah. Worth a couple hundos more a month now.
To add to that, they'd probably take the workbench back, now that it's been all fixed up. "Oh, I was going to come get that anyway. That was my father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roommates' workbench. It is sentimental to me.. Oh. the shed is practically useable now? That's worth another hundred a month! Pay up!"
I appreciate being included in your update and progress!
Congratulations on your fantastic new workspace!
Avocado toast is delicious!
😁
Wow, that is a stunning transformation! And I'm so glad you saved the old workbench!
Congrats on the new space! Sorry to hear your struggles but I'm glad you've got it all situated!
here's to new beginnings!
I really hope your landlord is giving you a discount on the rent after this... you just added some serious value to the property by doing this.
Why would he, she needed the space and he allowed her to modify it.
@@jzlharvey Because she just took on the cost to improve HIS (if it's a he) property on her own dime. That means he can charge more rent in the future, so she just made him money. Normally, any property improvements are done on the landlord's dime.
I repainted the interior of a rental once w/approval and got a month of free rent. 👍 LL knew a good thing when he saw it.
i was thinking the same thing. serious value was added. but i guarantee he wont do anything for her. but damn i cant believe she prob did that for free.....
Great Job Xyla!! Cant wait to see what projects come out of this shop!!
Welcome back! So glad you were able to find such and amazing place! The shop looks INCREDIBLE! Nicely done ^-^
That looks awesome, so sad you have to move again.
What a great project, the shop looks amazing . Definitely a space you’ll enjoy creating in for a long time. But to be honest the workbench absolutely stole the show as the choices you made in refinishing were perfect. Good luck with everything you do going forward.
It is so good to see you back, Xyla! You are so energetic that your videos are just a joy to watch. I was, quite frankly, a little worried during your hiatus. Congrats on your new space. I can't wait to see what you do next!
Looks amazing I can't wait to see what projects you are able to do with all this extra space and fancy new tools.
To be clear the bench top is flooring from a bowling alley. 14:05 I have a lot of this that I made counter tops from. On the side you can see the large bolts that hold the wood together. Each board is nailed with square nails. The side you can see the relief that was cut using a wood shaper.
Keep going strong
Wow! What a transformation! So glad Lindsey could help. We all could use a Lindsey in our lives! Of course now the pressure is on to done your amazing projects!
Your new workshop is totally gorgeous, can't wait to see what you make!
Hey! We're eviction buddies! I ALSO got evicted in mid-December!
I have not forgotten, nor will I forgive. Ideally will buy drinks for people who leave terrible Google reviews for the property management company until they go out of business for having a less than 1-star review on Google.
EDIT: omfg your organizer friend is amazing
Things you can never have enough of: outlets, clamps, screwdrivers....
10mm sockets....
varnish...

Incredible! I'm so jealous of your clamp wall. I love right angle clamps so much, too... they're so satisfying to use.
I'm so happy you found such a great new space!
Congratulations!! I've missed your awesome inventions and amazing way of explaining things. Can't wait to see the cool stuff you make here!
"Hey I'm gonna be paying you every month for the privilege of using this place, but can we fix this really inconvenient bit of disrepair (garage floor)?"
Landlord: "fuck you"
Wow - what a makeover. The new workshop is large, great and beautifully renovated. I love the well organized structure, the many possibilities to hang something on the wall.
When you oiled the workbench I was nearly envy - a nice old but rock solid bench. Have fun, I am looking forward for cool new projects.
Blessings from over the pond.
Happy you seem to have resolved your issues.
I missed your content (And smile!).
Glad to see you back & looking forward to seeing what projects you cook up in your new shop.
I miiiiiisssed you
As someone who's technically a homeowner at 24, I can tell you it's possible to afford a home, but the work never stops and the process to find one you like is BRUTAL. Like I spent from October to February looking for my house every weekend with a realtor, and the only reason I got it at the price I did was because it was a "pocket listing". Good thing tho is that pocket listing means I got my house for $30K less than all the recently sold houses in the neighborhood. The bad thing is that the home repair is never ending, and money is always tight.
I’m glad I’m not the only person with random strobe light’s and power supplies in my shed! Love what you did with this place!
The new shop looks awesome! I'm amazed by how much you were able to do on a low budget.
2nd view from kashmir
Congrats on the beautiful new shop and new tools and sponsorships to fill it Xyla! I see that McMaster catalogue there, definitely not jealous :D I've missed you're energetic build and projects, but knew you had to be pretty busy between the move and your plane. Glad to have you back on here!
In your absence I watched most all of ToT's videos, adopted a little old Atlas lathe that I'm slowly cleaning up, and started watching Blondihacks!
Beautiful save on the workbench. May your new shop serve you well. You have been blessed with wonderful friends. Enjoy!
Wow, congratulations on the nice shop! You're extremely ambitious. I wish I had half the drive you have. Looking forward to seeing your next artistic endeavor out of your new place! Thanks for sharing!
This was awesome to watch! I wouldn’t have thought the before and after were the same building.
15:00 Wow! That old bench refinished along side the paddles , pendent lights, wooden corset, and USA map is beautiful!
Beautiful and smart. Excellent choices on how your shop is set up. It flows very well and the white was a great pick to brighten up the area without a ton of lights.
Glad to see you back and in an even bigger space, you could build so many big projects in there
Welcome back Xyla :). I loved the transformation in this video. Awesome!
What a great shop space !! Looking forward to all the new projects you'll be able to do there !
Congratulations on your new workspace!
I'm getting ready to do something similar now that I have a spot to put a shop and it needs a lot of work.
Wow! So nice. Psyched up to get my garage/shop in order. Got a lot of storage issues to work out. Thanks for this!
Well, hey there! Nice to see you're back and the shop looks sooo dreamy!
This is the first video of yours that I have seen. You and your friends did an amazing job setting everything up. The old work bench with the Edison lights look very nice. A perfect place to take a break and decide what to do next. I'm looking forward to see what the first project out of the new shop will be.
Incredible transformation. So much cool potential and the shop will look great as a character in new videos!
Looks famliar!! When I clean out a really dirty space I use a big electric leaf blower, works great!! congrats on the new digs!!
Nicely done! It’s exciting to see all of your hard work pay off. I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Your new shop looks amazing! I look forward to all the awesome projects that will come out of it! Stay awesome! Much love from Slovenia! :)
Glad to see you back! Excited for these next adventures!
Massive congratulations on the new space! It looks amazing, and a huge upgrade compared to the old one. And I'm sure it will help you work quicker and more efficiently too.
Looks fantastic, Xyla! Hope you have smooth sailing ahead for you as you get back to working on projects.
Congrats on the new place. Your new shop has given my some great ideas and I'm super jelly of all that space!
The both of you did great on this one! Looks really awesome and seems super practical as well!
Little suggestion I have would be to get some clear plastic sheets to put into the roof framing to separate front and back fully with the help of a curtain. Should help to keep the carpet and everything out back clean when you do sawing and grinding up front.
Such an improvement over the old
Place. Congratulations! Can’t wait for the new projects.
Glad to see that you gave that old joiner's bench the appreciation it deserves! Judging from the plywood in the door, I'd guess that it dates anywhere from the late 40's to the early 70's. What a wonderful thing to find in your new shop!
I could smell that bench when she was sanding it …
@@gixxa7500 So could I!
