I realize that my comment is almost 4 years after your initial review of the radio, but I just had to thank you for your thorough and complete review of this radio. I especially appreciate the onscreen comments because of my hearing disabilities. Many thanks and blessings. 73's
This is an excellent well done review. The best I have seen done in the ham radio videos. I have been researching this radio, even though this four years later, it is still relevant. The short comings of the radio of small display is made easier with the optional blue tooth microphone that also has a display screen. Very well done and concise explanation and demonstration of the features. Most reviews of ham stuff is just talking about the item and never really doing anything with it. Great job. I will probably buy this radio even though it’s not made by a mainstream ham radio manufacturer.
This was a great review, probably the best on youtube for this radio right now. Small screen, no remote head, and made in China...those are my hangups with this rig. That being said, I MIGHT still pick one up, since it's really the only reasonable solution for DMR in a mobile. I really wish Kenwood or Motorola would make a DMR mobile aimed at the Amateure market. One funny observation, your Kenwood D74 sounded really good when doing the cross band demonstration!
I don’t know why you have a hang-up about the Chinese manufacturers. They are the innovative leaders who are bringing these new features to us at bargain prices.
Thanks for sharing this, Pascal! It looks and sounds like a remarkable radio. I was surprised to hear how good the audio is in crossband mode. I'd assumed that at the very least, some aspect of audio performance would have to suffer. I was very wrong! :-)
best review of the radio so far! thanks. you covered some usability items no one else has! I wish someone would make an aprs radio that would jump over to the APRS frequency, beacon, then jump back to monitoring on the currently set frequency of the VFO so as not to use up the entire vfo just for APRS. because the aprs can easily be Time division multiple accessed with its channel. i bought this radio because of this review and others. I have yet to try this feature. 73
Great review! I have one coming this week. I'll be installing it in my 2018 F-150 and using a COMPACtenna tri-band antenna. There are lots of 220MHz repeaters here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Fusion seems predominant over DMR here. I'm a new Technician, now studying for General and Extra. My HT is a Yaesu FT3D. Happy Easter! 73, KN6NPZ
Addendum: This radio is full duplex and you can simultaneously receive on both VFO's, FM / DMR, FM / FM, **DMR / DMR (V/V, V/U, U/V, U/U) . **In DMR: You can monitor two digital frequencies (one on each VFO), but you can only receive one VFO at the time. In FM you can receive two signal at the same time. But you can receive one in DMR and one in FM simultaneously. 73 Pascal VA2PV
Thanks for video. Can you please explain better which type of full duplex can be done? For example: 1) full duplex only in FM analougue cross band (one band to listen one to receive); 2) full duplex also in DMR but only cross band; 3) full duplex also in DMR and also in isofrequency (transmit and receive on same frequency using one time slot to transmit, other to receive). Thanks
Thanks got a great review! Does it support APRS messages not only beaconing? Is the APRS TNC accessible over Bluetooth to connect APRSDroid or similar app?
very nice video congratulations! I have only one question, can the frequency you want be entered directly via the keyboard, or do you have to program them in advance on the radio???
Thank you for the informative review Pascal. Could you tell us please if it's possible to change the talkgroup the mobile is on from your HT while doing DMR crossband repeat or can you only operate on the talkgroup the mobile is set to?
I’m a ham with my tech studying for my general. I’ve only used analog VHF/UHF so far but want to get into DMR and would like to install a radio in my car. Is this a good radio to buy?
Hi Paul. Do you know if this radio for APRS supports 7-letter call signs from the v1.2 APRS spec? Really hoping it's not the six +2 chars for -1..-9 like the older style stuff. This is useful for instance for me. Really appreciated your video. Thanks! :)
Can you switch modes (professional or amature) to allow extended transmit on UHF like Part 90? That will be great even if it will turn off 220 at the pro mode. Please confirm
I don't care at all about APRS position beacons. Does this thing send APRS SMS messages? Does it decode APRS packets? Haven't found a review yet that addresses these questions.
Hi Mario, yes and no (not directly) Here's the procedure. Step 1: Open your CPS for the 878 and go in tools and export all the config. Step 2: Open the 578 CPS go in tool and import all the 878 files (you just exported in the 878 CPS) and you're done ;-) 73 Pascal VA2PV
