I have the Anytone AT-D578UV Pro DMR radio and so far I love it. I have had mine since 12/23/19. The only thing I wish it had was the detachable faceplate.
I received my 578 a couple of weeks ago and mounted it in the shack to play and set up before it goes in my rig. I was able to load my code plug from my 868 after fixing a problem or two with out of hand freqs. So far a solid radio. No repeaters in my area to transmit though. Still having fun with it.
Hey Jason - correction on it being illegal to transmit out of ham bands. That’s not not entirely true. Sure, for day to day use, it is illegal. But in the case of an emergency, the FCC allows you to transmit on any frequency available to get assistance. For that reason alone, I would go for the commercial banded radios whenever necessary because it allows you to potentially reach people you wouldn’t be able to if you could only transmit on ham bands.
Yes you are correct, but I am not really talking about emergency comms in this video. In normal daily operations, you shouldn't be transmitting outside of band, unless you have a license or privileges elsewhere to do so. Also it appears that the Commercial version of this radio doesn't include the 220 band, so you actually lose some frequencies when moving away from the ham band.

Jason - I see now that Bridgecom shows the spec for transmit for the AT-D578 on 220 MHz as being 5 watts max. I was thinking that it had been 20 watts max before, but am not sure. Thanks for your video! Hoop K9QJS
I believe there has been some changes on that from Anytone themselves. At first they claimed it would do 25-watts..then it was 10-watts. I am guessing that Bridgecom is posting it as 5-watts so that people don't try to return the radio, thinking it is malfunctioning. Right now, the ball is in Anytone's court because they claim it should do more than 5-watts, but it doesn't. Their analog triband mobile did 25-watts on 220, and the normal amounts of power on 2M/70cm. This one should do the same.
I have a 578 uv2Pro, the "a" "b" "c" &"d" buttons on my microphone have no affect on the fully programed radio; I've looked everywhere. The lock button on the right side of the mic has no affect on the abcd buttons. Programing or defect? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
If this goes in a mobile I feel that the mic cable should be on the left side of the radio and not drug across the front where it can hit knobs and obstruct the view of the screen.
This question was asked and answered already. But yes, I think Bridgecom lists it that way so people don't try to return the radio when it only outputs 5-watts on 220. If they advertised it any higher, customers would think they had a faulty radio. When Anytone announced this as a triband radio, it was listed to have 25-watts output on 220. Then I think I read somewhere that they changed that to 10-watts. 5-watts was never the plan. Their Triband analog radio, the AT-5888UVIII does 20-25 watts on 220, while doing "normal" power on the other 2 bands, so why doesn't this one do the same thing? That was the point I was trying to make.
Just asked my wife for this radio for my birthday which is next month. Told her the price and much to my surprise she said it wasn't too much. So it looks like next month it is. Guess it pays to turn 40.
Jason: I met you at Hamvention in 2019, I watch your videos and I enjoyed meeting you in person, and once again you are costing me money because of this video I now need to get this radio, just kidding, it was cool to hear you mention R&L Electronics as I live in Cincinnati and will be getting radio from them. 73’s N0OBD Doug.
Hey Jason this company seems to make a decent radio I wonder how complicated it is to program let us know in this brand new episode you have going Thanks again 👍🏆
Can I load the firmware using my Macbook or does it have to be a Windows? I'm just getting in to DMR and am leaning toward this radio, it looks like they would pre-load it from the factory.
Unfortunately, tho, after trying to use the radio for a week in a real world situation I found out that is chock-full of bugs and problems. I have already sent Anytone a long list of issues. I am on firmware 1.05 now. downloading 1.06 to try, however, I am not holding my hopes very high due to the CNY break, they just crammed a quick update (1.06) before closing shop for 2 weeks. So the radio is pretty much inoperable if you plan to use it unattended, as in, for example, using it as crossband DMR repeater inside a box on a remote location. The radio will freeze in some state, randomly, when in crossband DMR only way to recover is pulling the plug. Then the Crossband DMR won't fully work when band is set to A, you need to have band B selected for the crossband DMR to transmit both ways. Also, in crossband DMR the SMS don't pass through, nor do GPS position request, nor do radio check messages, nor call alerts, not even private calls. WTH? Then 2 of the 4 programmable buttons on the remote are hardcoded to some function, namely PA and PD, so you can't assign these two to do anything in the CPS, even if you do, the hardcoded functions remain, so you're left with a 20 button microphone that only 2 are programmable WTH???... and no speed dial with the Mic keypad? WTH too? My cheap 45 dollar Baofeng BF-1801 can do this, why can't this 400 dollar radio do it too?... Bluetooth is a real sorry attempt to get something working, but not really working... for example, if you turn off the BT headset, and the turn it back on, the radio won't reconnect to it. You need to power the radio down then up again... and the BT PTT much of the same, when you power the radio you must explicitly go to the menu and select "connect", otherwise it won't work... then Bluetooth won't transmit voice if headset intercom is been idle for more than a few minutes, as in, pushing the BT PTT will activate the TX and open the squelch, but no audio will be heard... Then like I stated at the beginning, the radio has frozen solid once already and it was inoperable until I pulled the plug... so for 390 bucks its a major "initial" disappointment. With that said, if Anytone fixes these issues this radio will, arguably, have no equal, b/c the receivers are VERY good, it draws rings in terms of RF performance to pretty much all these Chinese made inexpensive radios with direct conversion. Hope they fix the bugs b/c I REALLY want to like this radio. However, I have to face the reality, that if I can't use it reliably I'll have to get rid of it in favor of the less featured (but 100% reliable) and now discontinued Vertex Standard LMR gear...
Thanks for the video. I am interested in a dual band mobile like this or the Yaesu. I haven’t looked into ICOM mobile yet. I have read some reviews that this mobile rig (AT-D578) is not good with selectivity. Someone on eham mentioned that driving in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area there is a lot of intermod. What is your experience with it? I am also in the Dallas area and will most likely be driving through Dallas on occasion. The features look appealing, just concenrned with the intermod comments I have seen. Thanks and 73! Brent KI5HXM.
Hi Brent. Yes, Dallas has a lot of RF floating around due to all of the "stuff" in the area. Lots of Ham Radio repeaters on all bands, commercial repeaters, public safety repeaters and frequencies, etc. So there is a danger of intermod. However, my experience is that the folks who complain about it the most are those using the cheaper Chinese rigs. I do not have any intermod issues at all with my ID-5100 in my truck. I ran a V71A for a while too, that was also fine. In the past I've also run a FT-8900, no issues there. But for the Anytone, I have no taken it mobile yet, so I can't comment on whether or not this model would have intermod issues specifically while driving in Dallas.
Ham Radio 2.0 thanks for the reply. Hope you are surviving well during this crazy time. I have a Anytone 878 with a mag mount which I received just before we got locked down here in Texas. Well not locked down but you know. Cheers! I will wave to you as I pass through Grapevine in the future. I enjoy your videos.
So...on the mic, the holes you were talking about...I've seen those referred to as a speaker and the mic as the hold under the word Anytone near the top of the mic...? Now...I think it's silly to have a speaker in a mic on a mobile radio like that but that's what I saw somewhere. I do see the hole up by the word Mic under Anytone, though... (?)}
There is a speaker in the mic, and yes it is dumb to have one on a mobile radio. I don't know where the speaker is though...in which part of the mic. I just know that those 4 holes are filled-in with the updated models.
I don't know why they would cover up speaker holes, then. Yes it does sound bad, but I have both versions of the mic, and there is no difference. Anyway, one of the vendors told me it was a change to the mic element along with the filled-in holes, so I'm not sure what those have to do with one another.
Thank you for this video. I'm new to ham radio and have found your videos very helpful. I look forward to seeing more videos on this radio. I am finding I really enjoy dmr. So once again thank you for everything you do sir. 73's. KE0YWR
Just got mine anytone 578 and on the dmr side of the radio my watt meter is only showing 5 watts out put shouldn't this be what it normally puts out on uhf ?
Unless you are using a PEP wattmeter specifically for measuring TDMA (DMR) you won't get an accurate reading. Switch it to analog on a normal wattmeter for what the radio is truly outputting.
"PRO" is just the name of the model that is most fully-loaded for the D578. I think they should have used a different term besides "PRO" for it because it is mis-leading. There is a Part 90 version that has the 220 band removed, but the "PRO" version means that all 3 bands are there and the model has Bluetooth and APRS.
I am already finding things that I am not liking about my new Anytone 578. The design of the speaker ports in the back is a complete fail because they are installed way too close together for a communications speaker to be able to plug into them without the additional expense of additional adapters to spread them wider apart. Second, it is supposedly a full duplex radio, (the reason for 2 external speaker ports) yet only one speaker port works. When I turn off the squelch for both A and B side, all of the sound comes out of the exact same speaker. Third, Anytone promotes this radio as having the same benefits of the 878 with additional features, yet I have found several features from the 878 which are not included in the 578, including the ability to change the text colors as the latest 878 update allowed.
Thanks for commenting. The text-color change is possible in the CPS of the 578, make sure you are running the latest version. For those other observations, I will check them out, thanks for mentioning them.
@@HamRadio2 I found the text colors available in the CPS, but they are nothing like all the new options available in the 878. The 878 screen is much more colorful and easier to keep all of the various information separate. With the 578 the color options are much more limited, just like how the 878 was before the latest firmware update.
Let me know if your radio will send the sound from VFO a and VFO B to the separate speakers like they claim or not. Mine may just be a dud, but mine sends sound from both VFO's to the same speaker, the other speaker never comes on.
@@HamRadio2 I had a hell of a time to get the info to change the band to commercial. I had to download a different program for that to make it happen but I lost the 220 band for the sacrifice which was ok with me. I have GMRS repeaters as well so I wanted a radio that did this as well. If you haven't figured that part out on how to change the band on the radio E-mail me and I can get you the info. I guess for some reason now it's a real hush hush deal now due to FCC new requirements. To bad people got to be stupid with this great benefit and ruin it for others. Enjoy your shows!
Anytone AT-D578UV Pro Tx extended. All you need to do is to press the channel knob and the P4 button at the same time and turn on the radio. Once rebooted you then have a choice of which band you want to use by turning the channel selector to the appropriate band, then reboot your radio. PLEASE NOTE that all the previous settings etc.will be lost. And you my have to reinstall all your setting again.
Your computer screen view would be much bigger and easier to read if you'd make it full screen. There's really no need to shrink it just to show yourself in the lower right corner.
Yet, it still doesn’t have remote head capability. That’s a huge No Go with a lot of today’s vehicles. No way I could fit that thing in my 2016 Grand Cherokee, without a remote head. Even if I were to install it in my 2006 Dodge Ram, and it has room for the whole radio, I would still want remote head capability for a cleaner look. This radio isn’t even a consideration until it has a remote head☹️
Agreed. I think all of the Chinese companies have missed the mark on the remote head feature. I've heard a remote head is coming for this radio though... a Bluetooth head...so no wires. Not sure how accurate that rumor is, but that would be a nice addition.
Yeah that's where I'm at also. Without a remote head. I don't have anyway to mount it cleanly and still be usable . It has the features but I'm holding off until they release it with a remote face or someone else steps up

Dear Ham Radio 2.0, the Chinese and Japanese radio makers are increasingly putting GPS capability into their radios. They are all displaying this information as the latitude and longitude coordinates. Why haven’t they offered an icon placed on a map. Doesn’t google offer their maps for free for devices. The best examples of this usage is the Garmin Rino series of 5 watt GMRS radios who use moving street and topographical maps.
Ham radio has been in the forefront of search and rescue since it’s beginning. We shouldn’t be relying on radios such as the very expensive ($ 650.00 ) Garmin Rino’s to conduct search and rescue operations. Of course the latitude and longitude information is also available on the screen, however mapping data is invaluable and can be a life saver.
@@bulldogbrower6732 most of us sync that gps data with aprsdroid and see it on our cell phone. I'm not sure what a tiny map on the radio's display could add to help.
I have a strong desire to get into DMR, but the idea of buying Chinese is a pretty big turn off. I think the no remote head plus small screen...gives me pause. But the idea of a mobile DMR capable rig is definitely appealing. It's too bad Kenwood doesn't make an Amateur focused DMR mobile.
@@HamRadio2 Price aside, I saw you have a review of the NX-5800, would you say the experience for DMR was enjoyable on that device, better/worse than this rig?
The CPS on the NX-5800 is a bear. Totally different ball game. Once you learn how to use that, the workability of the radio itself is great. But programming was a real pain.

No, but Anytone said it would be....about 2 years before it was ever released. Same as their AT-5888UVIII. I have a direct line to Anytone in China and I have been talking to them about this radio since long before the public knew about it. So not really misinformation...changed information.
No scripting here at all. This is just stream of consciousness narrative. Not a really effective approach to teaching. Lets try this, oh it doesn't work. Let try that, oh it isn't in any order. What is the objective for the lesson.
Correct. It's called being authentic. Over 300 episodes on this channel and I have said in...maybe 100 of them?....that I don't script anything. So that should be no surprise there. In the real world, these issues could easily be seen by other folks besides me. I wanted to show people how to overcome them. That is what this video, and many others I post, are about.

True
I thought it was advertised as 5 Watts for 220 MHz. Actually, from the BridgeCom site:
“Power: 45w UHF, 5w 220, 50w VHF”
@@HamRadio2 Jason, do you know if they ever got the 220 wattage up?
I have one of them Jason. I wish it had a detachable front end with a bigger screen. Other than that, It is a great transceiver. 73 George KD4FJ
Agreed
Just asked my wife for this radio for my birthday which is next month. Told her the price and much to my surprise she said it wasn't too much. So it looks like next month it is. Guess it pays to turn 40.
Haha, good luck to you!
Thanks Doug! Good to talk to you again. 73
Hey Jason this company seems to make a decent radio I wonder how complicated it is to program let us know in this brand new episode you have going Thanks again 👍🏆
to upload 878 codeplug band mode must match and you export to CSV file then import to your codeplug
Already done, but getting the band mode to match was the challenge.
Ordered mine it’s on the way. Thanks for all the help, need all I can get. More please. KO4KSV
Good video, Jason! Can't wait to get my hands on one of these.
Thanks, Steve!
Lots of firmware updates have been made to this model now.
@@HamRadio2 Still on revision 1.05 firmware, I don't think there is a new version yet. If there is, please provide link.
is on my 2020 wish list !
Great part 1, i am looking forward to getting one of these.
I enjoy your videos.
the bottom holes are speaker, the mic is at the top
Correct
Bought from R&L fast shipping. Got radio without GPS to use as base station
Excellent!
So...on the mic, the holes you were talking about...I've seen those referred to as a speaker and the mic as the hold under the word Anytone near the top of the mic...? Now...I think it's silly to have a speaker in a mic on a mobile radio like that but that's what I saw somewhere. I do see the hole up by the word Mic under Anytone, though... (?)}
There is a speaker in the mic, and yes it is dumb to have one on a mobile radio. I don't know where the speaker is though...in which part of the mic. I just know that those 4 holes are filled-in with the updated models.
@@HamRadio2 The mic is actually under the AnyTone label right under the letter "Y" and the holes on the bottom is just a speaker.
Also the Speaker in the MIC sounds bad, it is only good if your in quiet place, a quit car or as a base unit with a quiet room.
73's. KE0YWR
Thanks for your comments
Is the firmware 1.05A a beta version or revised version of official release 1.05 firmware? I can't find 1.05A anywhere.
105a was the beta that was available when this was recorded. 105 is the official release
Is this radio just locked to ham radio bands or can this radio transmit on MURS and GMRS as well ?
You can use this radio in Ham mode where it is locked to those bands, or you can change the mode to be a Part 90 radio where it is full open
Is the display/control fixed to the body of the TRx or can you use it remotely as with the Yaesu FT-7800 ? 73 Leo PA5LS
What is the difference between the Pro and the HAM one?
"PRO" is just the name of the model that is most fully-loaded for the D578. I think they should have used a different term besides "PRO" for it because it is mis-leading. There is a Part 90 version that has the 220 band removed, but the "PRO" version means that all 3 bands are there and the model has Bluetooth and APRS.
hi. i rookie. 578 work for gmrs. i try only buy 1 radio for all. is pissible?
If you put it into Part 90 mode, yes
Is thus radio fully APRS capable? On DMR and analog?
It is supposed to be fully capable. That's one of the further tests I'll be doing
Bridgecom said to export the codeplug from the ht then import into 578
Yes, as I have replied to other comments, that kinda works...but there are more steps to it than just that, that I show in the next video.
TO FIX BAND ERROR go to in the software go to MODEL INFORMATION AND SELECT CORRECT AREA BANDS for your country it will then load your code plug.
Already done. It'll be in the next episode. The part that disappoints me is that the 878 I have wasn't already set for the USA
From the correct account now, LOL
From what I understand, that is how they are imported to keep them compliant with the new FCC ruling.
Would this be a good companion to the 878 HT?
Does anyone know where I can get an extra power cable for this that is fused?
Freq is Lock on only HAM freq or expand 136-174, 400-480?
It depends on which version you get. The Ham version is locked to the Ham freqs and includes 220. The Part 90 version is full open, but removes 220.
@@HamRadio2 Ok. Thx. Is AT-D578UVIII Pro better than TYT MD-9600?
Anytone AT-D578UV Pro Tx extended. All you need to do is to press the channel knob and the P4 button at the same time and turn on the radio. Once rebooted you then have a choice of which band you want to use by turning the channel selector to the appropriate band, then reboot your radio.
PLEASE NOTE that all the previous settings etc.will be lost. And you my have to reinstall all your setting again.
power supply of 15-17 amps is enough for that radio?
Probably
Your open tabs look just like mine.
Thank you!
It has the features but I'm holding off until they release it with a remote face or someone else steps up
Is it true that when the 220mhz is active, the rx becomes limited to 144-148?
ok I have to finally ask. you mention R&L Electronics all the time. With you in TX how did you get to be such a strong supporter of them? I think they are great and are my local shop to go to for many things Ham related. but you my friend are a little farther away than I in Cincy. And by the way thanks for some great Videos. Vic KE8JWE

cant belive you gave away your ID number.. Have you caught anyone TXing out of band using your callsign? Great video love your work
You can lookup anyone's ID number on RadioID.net. It is public information. It can also be obtained by anyone who is listening to me transmit, who will see it come across their screen. In no way are any of these numbers "secret"
@@HamRadio2 ....and this is why I'm on UA-cam trying to figure out DMR..im a noob .
well there went 30 minutes of my life I can't get back...
That can basically be said about every half hour of your life
Dear Ham Radio 2.0, the Chinese and Japanese radio makers are increasingly putting GPS capability into their radios.
Not sure, good question
Lat and Long data are useful for digital modes, an icon on a map isn't.
The VGC VR-N7500 uses Google maps in its app. (I have it.) It is not DMR. Doesn't AnyTone make both? I want both - that work.
Agreed. The Kenwood NX-5000 series of radios are commercially focused and therefore have higher price tags, but they are great rigs too.
No remote head it's basically useless for my mobile needs. I will stick with my HT (for DMR mobile use) and my D710ga for everything else.
Scott K5RSB
HT won't get you out as far
@@HamRadio2 I agree ,but I can use my Hotspot for DMR for now while mobile use. I am looking for a mobile DMR with a remote head that I can use to replace my Kenwood D 710ga for right now I will use what I have.
Nice video. Screen is hella small.
On the radio? Yes, true.
Ham Radio 2.0 yes, hard I see while mobile.
I'm thinking of getting the Kenwood NX UHF mobile you reviewed. How do you like it?
I like it alot - but that model caters to the Commercial market and doesn't have the features that these others that cater to the Amateur world have. But the Kenwood is a great radio
Ham Radio 2.0 thanks brother. I'll consider that in my final decision. Love your videos and podcasts!
