Eric, "VERY BASIC" is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! As a novice in the 70s, I got out of ham radio over 43 years ago, and not only is the whole FM repeater thing new to me (offsets, PL tones, etc.) but DMR is a whole new universe to figure out. So many videos fly through things like "how to upload your codeplug" without taking the time to explain what the hell a Zone is, or a Talk Group, without explaining the term or the hierarchy. After spending days searching the web, this video finally explained it for me. Can't tell you how helpful this video is, and I thank you for taking the time to create and post it! 73 de KJ7RHN
This was an excellent refresher for me, I set up my DMR radio last year over the summer, figured it all out, made the codeplug for it, but if you asked me to do it again lol I would have long forgotten how. Thanks for this. I have another DMR rig coming and need to program it again and this helped me remember all this stuff again. It took me a while to figure out how to make a codeplug for a local repeater on my own.
Oh man, this is the best explanation I have found!! Watched quite a few videos, and fumbled through a very simple codeplug for my 878uv plus. Thanks for making this seem like english instead of a foreign language. I am a Yaesu guy, and the C4FM is pretty straight forward, but this stuff is all new and alien to me. 73 from VE6GCM
At 1:30, right in the beginning, you glossed over what can be a daunting problem for many non-PC hams ... HOW do you determine which COM port the radio is on? On a PC with many other applications loaded (such as N1MM, FT8, Flex radio, etc) there can be MANY com ports on the list. "Pick the COM port the radio is on" ain't always so easy!
Good video -- thanks!!! It's worth remembering that lots of folks got started on a Baofeng or similar HT, and have used CHIRP to set things up. So, for us, there's some 'translation' from what we've seen to the new software. I'd pay real money to have software that's actually well designed, well written, and intuitive. Sadly, the state of affairs in the ham world isn't there yet. The software appears to fall deeply into the "afterthought" category.
Just bought my first DMR unit and watching lots of videos until it arrives in two days. I thought analog was 25k not 12.5k? So even though inside the channel you have "contact" with Treasure Coast selected, you can still scroll to other TGs? This is really exciting !!
Hi, 1. Where can I download the programming software and which cable is suitable for programming? From my past experience with Yaesu FT3DR, the cable that comes with the radio isn't for programming. This drives me crazy. Fortunately, after several days, I found that I could program my FT3DR with the SD card. 2. To program AT578UV, is it possible to import/export from/to a csv file? I have more than 200 channels to program and I definitely DON'T want to do it one by one. With TYT MD9600, I made a csv file which facilitates minor amendment. I would like to import the exact same csv file to the Anytone.
Eric great and helpful video for me (a new ham with a 578). I can find the color codes for my local DRM repeater in repeater book but it does not list the time slot. Where can I get this information?
I'm Very NEW to this Ham radio stuff. I have a question Maybe someone can tell me the answer. I'm very interested in getting into Ham Radios and taking the test. My question is; can a Midland DBR2500 radio be "programed" and more channels added to it? And, where can I buy a cable for this radio? any ideas? I got this Midland DBR2500 radio for my birthday already this is why I'm asking this question on it. All I do is listen to try and learn Y'all's ling-0 som. Thanks in advance for any info on this. and God Bless🙏🏽
As always, you did a great job. I hope that Anytone watches your videos. I’m curious, the radio transmits APRS but doesn’t receive it. It would be great if it received the packets from other radios and used the Bluetooth in the radio to plot the locations out on APRS droid. The radio has everything, GPS, APRS, Bluetooth, it would be great for a search and rescue team radio.
So just to respond to the 3rd question comment... I have this radio and I've been trying to program it from the handset and setting the offset isn't obvious compared to my kenwood HT. On the Kenwood it might be too simple but I put in the frequency and there is an option for +/-/no offset which uses defaults unless you change them. On this, under radio settings there is an auto repeater chan a and b offset setting and then under channel settings there is an offset setting as well as a separate TX and RX freq field. Obviously I can manually set things, but is this the expected operationing mode? Why even talk about offset if so? I came to this video after troubleshooting for an hour with my local club trying to figure out why some weren't hearing me only to find out auto repeater offset doesn't do what I thought it did. The ham radio test answer on the theory is simple, the execution in this radio is not clear. Rather than gloss over that I'd love to learn why there seems to be 3 different ways to state an offset and what the differences are for.
Always enjoy your videos. I think it is great that you are out there promoting the hobby. Question: Are your analog repeaters actually narrow band or should your analog bandwidths be set to 25k. Just wondering. Keep up the great work.
@@W5ERX4911 No worries... Before I saw your comment I had already noticed it...12.5 would still have worked but as I was going through the codeplug I then noticed it :)
Anytone AT-D578 mega shit. NO PTT! You dont can use any other Microphone and no support from Anytone! You can only use the OriginalMic. Bluetooth will disconnected at any time. Works not stable! The feeling of pots are bad.I have still 7x MD-9600, RT90 Version 3. The units works much better. No VFO, no Bluetooth, but the units work fine! And with somer other microphones. The customer need to know, that he can only User the original Microphone. Pull the Mic down and broken, you cannot use the Anytone anymore. Anytone has thousend nice functions, but nothing works good. My choice is the TYT. Cheeper and works.

I have been up and down the I-net looking for a basic 'dumbed down' introduction to channels, zones and talk groups..... finally.. THANKS.
Eric - many thanks, reinforced what I've been ad-hoc building. Enjoyed your presentation style bringing simplicity to the issue.

Thanks Eric. It's pretty simple once you pointed out the basic areas you fill in. Most people see how complex the program looks and get discouraged.
Like the way You explain how to program a DMR Radio,

Thanks for the code plug intro Eric.
What is the software that was on the laptop prior to plugging the radio in?
Outstanding explanation. Thanks.
Would be cool if you do a "how to" on Digital contact list .Great Video for us struggling with this CPS and DMR in general.

I got a Alinco DJ-MD5X, like very Good Quality,
Lets us know if you do a video on making code plugs for the 878 UVII Plus. Nice job explaining how to make code plugs
Thank you!!

one thing I've told people if you have the cps, sure download a code plug but open it and see how it's setup.
So love my 878 I’m considering selling my Yaesu ftm500 I use as a base to get a 578uv3 with the BT01 controller what ya think?
Anyone know if the Anytone AT-D578UV can receive two DMR frequecies at the same time, or can it only do DMR on one VFO and FM on the other etc ?

In this video which software version and which firmware version was used for anytone 578? Thanks 73 de IT9YBI
Can i use my 868 code plug? Sure would be nice
I live in Sahuarita, AZ. Can I put a talk group from FL. like SARS in my radio and use it thru my local repeater?
Yes you can... Only issue is there may be a repeater group or owner out there that doesnt like that..
@@HamRadioConcepts What is the Talk Group ID?
where is squelch setting for analog chanels in that pc program?

No it's 25 but I realized I showed 12.5 I started over a new code plug and actually fixed it on this one... I wasnt paying attention

Definitely wasn't meant as a criticism...just noticed it and though to mention it. Great videos....please keep 'em coming.

You neglected to mention that unless a channel is assigned to a zone it won’t show up on your radio.
how to add offset is not clear -

it could be better... radio needs 3 knobs , repeater frequency , talkgroup , colorcode.... all on knobs.

Very condescending this guy.
