- Lyrics:
You know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
last night I saw the owner kiss it
and whisper in its ear
I was walking home from walgreen's
and he did not hear me see him
and on the
very very next morning
all the subway cars were hallelu-leluing
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life
they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
You know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
they've been showing it on the news
it was thirty times its size
with a megaphone and a heart-shaped bruise
it was hovering in the skies
and all the
subway cars were hallelu-lelu-leluing, hallejuah
welcome back the baby king, the baby king
all the believers they were smiling
and winking at each other
I could honestly say I was scared for my life
they said, all the non-believers they get to eat dirt
and the believers get to spit on their graves...
believe!...
You know that statue
that statue of baby jesus
in the window
in the window of the 99 cent store
when I woke up I ran and bought it
and locked it in my closet
with a little bread and water
and a flashlight and a first aid kit til he grows
Saw Regina perform this song live and had no idea it existed. I wish it were on Spotify!
Came here after seeing it live too! Never heard it before, thought it was new!
Her best songs that I've listened to for YEARS are usually demos, or recordings of live songs she's done but never produced! Start diving and you'll find some new favorites, I promise!
Same here in Utah!
saw it live as well some time ago, it was awesome. It's actually nice to discover some of her old music that feels like she just released them.
I saw it live yesterday after also never hearing it and it was amazinggg
This song really puts me in mind of an interview Regina did, where she said that the one thing she really can't stand is being told what to believe. She says that she herself waxes and wanes from faith, and she resents anyone who tries to take away that freedom. Surely no matter what non/religious viewpoint you have, you have to admire her open-mindedness?
+Sharptooth101 Thank you, thank you so much, your comment about Regina's faith sparked an epiphany in mine...
+Moritz Huettich I have no idea how I did it, but you're welcome :)
I think what's beautiful is how we all have the freedom to follow and believe any faith we desire.
Taking your child to a church they don't yet understand takes away that freedom, as does missions work and all prostheletising
You can’t fake faith, either you believe or you don’t
What a talent to make comedy with music.
My Fiancee died yesterday , this was her favorite song ever! thank you Regina for creating something she enjoyed!
I hope you're doing okay now
I hope you're okay too❤️
This song is on the 10th anniversary vinyl of Begin To Hope btw :)
still the best christmas song ever :D
Ahhhh this classic Regina song ❤ will always be in my heart
hallelu-lelu-leluing, hallejuah :D
I like the variation in this from other versions of them same song by Regina, shows her versatility really well!
Her voice is so versatile! Thanks for posting this.
Previously it was only available as a bootleg recording on the internet, not sure when she recorded this demo but I am damn glad she did.
Fantano just said he wants her to put this on an album.
I just found this song after watching Regina play this live. It’s such a funny song!
I absolutely love this song. XD It makes me laugh.
She's such a good artist though.
I think all of her studio versions are soooo much better! Love it
Yeah, I would too. It's a shame it's not on iTunes or anything. There are so many Regina Spektor songs that should be released as MP3's.
Is it just me that just sooooo want to know her!!!! It like my dream!!!!
me too! my answer to "which famous person would u have dinner with?" used to be her
This video got taken off of UA-cam music and it makes me very sad:(
😂 I love this song ❤ She did this live at Bonnaroo in 2007. Was hilarious 😂
Waxes and wanes, waxes and wanes... Never thought of it like that before, but yeah...
lmao this song is hilarious and perfect
It was a b-side on some single. Really hard to find. I'd love to get an mp3!
the greatest
geeeeniusss
True. just hope i can find a good quality version of this someplace some day !
Все еще тащусь))
BRILLIANT :D
What is the tune at the start? It's driving me mad
I think it's to not get the American Demographics upset. Though there is still "Laughing with God" and a few others. I'm actually curious if she's either Jewish or Atheist. She's still amazing either way.
Her family is Russian Jewish. Her family left Moscow and emigrated to Riverdale in the Bronx (leaving her piano behind) in 1989, during perestroika. She actually practiced piano on tabletops etc (relatable) until she was able to find a piano in the basement of a synagogue (which I assume might have been a more liberal synagogue as pianos wouldn’t be used on the sabbath at an orthodox shul)
I find the religious expression that comes out in her music rather inspiring. In “Becoming All Alone” she talks about being younger and feeling that the divine invited her to have a beer with a him, but as she gets older and becoming more aware of her mortality, the feeling of loneliness when she wants to return the invitation later in life.
She also explores other religious cultures in her music as well as entire conversations she overhears
The lyrics are great. What she says about religion is true - whatever religion.
2017 anyone?
The Muse.
Where did you get all these demos from???
This sounds like "I think I love you" by the partridge family
This song is hilarious. Is it on any of her albums?
does anyone know if this is on ANY of her albums? i want to get this on itunes but cant find it ANYWHERE!!
I don't think so sorry!
Bummer but thanks!
I know you asked this 11 years ago but it’s on the yellow begin to hope vinyl I think it was exclusive to that
@@1dandiggers thank you! I finally got a digital copy of the studio version. I appreciate your reply!
g e n i u s
i have all her CDs and this doesnt appear on anything i have!
Gazz Cavalera That’s because it’s only on the 10th anniversary, 2016 Record Store Day edition of “Begin To Hope”
AND a first aid kit
0:37 sounds like Ne Me Quitte Pas (:
What is awful about it? At the very least it's interesting.
kinda reminds me of nightmare before christmas idk why
Regina has some weird dreams
Persecution in overly religious communities is actually pretty common; Try being different I'm one sometimes and you'll see there is real danger.
She is Jewish.
Religious fanaticism
thats not a singin , for me its a ziro !!
Someone sounds butthurt about the fact that there is Christian fascism.
The most ridiculous song ever!!!!!!!
That’s why it’s great
imagine having such hatred that you make a song making fun of someone else's religion.
Have you even listened to the whole song? If this one is offending you then you should make better decisions mister
what makes your religion so special and unique from the hundreds of other religions that it can't be made fun of? think about it - religion is hella weird. you believe in an invisible being in the sky who created everything just to worship him/it, but who doesn't care enough about us to prevent endless tragedies -- which presumably, he has the power to do. but chooses not to. kind of an odd concept, and there's no proof for it. so it's really not any more immune to mockery than any other religion. and it has nothing to do with hatred -- just confusion!
you are so first verse
@@thomasjacob8599what part of the song should he have heard?
Bro indie music is such garbage
Ok?
Your favorite artist is probably Drake
