    Kaleb does great work, his attention to detail is fabulous. It’s a great tribute to the craftsmanship of the door makers to see how much that door has been through and still it held up and will last another 50 years or more.

    But still not convinced about wood pressing. The trim on that door isn't really that detailed or fancy.
    What wood shops had were pantograph routers that could carve wood using various router bits in a jig running off a model carving a secondary piece of wood.

    @freetolook3727 Рік тому +2

    @28:38 At that time, unpainted wood was an indicator that you were poor as paint was expensive and only the well off could afford it and the labor to apply it.
    In the 1920'sand 1930's there was a renaissance in the Art Deco, Arts & Crafts and the Craftsman style movements back to things being natural and wood in houses was mostly shellaced, then varnish later became the go to covering because shellac becomes sticky in high humidity.

    The decorative design on the pressed cross piece dates back to ancient Greece (at least) and is called 'egg and dart' Although this example does not have a dart between the eggs. Simple but elegant. Nice door. Caleb does nice work, doesn't he?

      @@MansardStudios Glad to hear it. Fixing up these old Victorians always pleases me. But if it's being done to sell, all decisions are looking to maximize profit. Restoration with intention to live there yourself means a labor of love. Caleb is trying to stay true to original as much as possible and doesn't compromise much.
      The episode with the door that Caleb worked on is the first of your site I've seen. I subscribed. Looking forward to seeing what you do with your home. Good luck.
