Sharks seem so cool, I am 16 and a job helping sharks seems very nice. Keep up the good work.
Thank you! Will do! 😀👍🤙
I am 16 and I only keep reef aquariums although I’ve kept seahorses and octopus both demanding species and I rlly am not a interested but I love how honest you are
Honestly I would love to have a shark as a pet, but at the same time I 100% understand and accept that I am incapable of taking care of one in my current situation. Maybe someday if I'm in a situation where I can take care of one, I'll think again bout gettin one.
I've kept both fresh and saltwater tanks, and I'm looking forward to the day when my abilities are enough to give one of these sharks a great life with the best care. But for now, I'm just focusing on what I can do.
Thank you for these helpful information, the world needs responsible, educated people like you.
Thank you! :-)
Keeping sharks looks like a blast, but it also looks to be a lot of work! I also think you can keep nurse sharks, leopard sharks, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks, banded hound sharks, and maybe bonnet heads? but you would need at least 5000 gallons. This guy on UA-cam uses a pool in his garage to keep horn and bamboo sharks, and he says that baby is 3000 gallons, which in my book, is PERFECT for bamboos and horns.
I would stay away from anything that migrates or gets bigger than 3.5 feet. Those are good sized tanks for these small benthic sharks for sure. It is definitely a really cool experience keeping these types of sharks and it can be a lot of work. Totally rewarding when they are thriving and you get the privilege to hang out with them on a daily basis. They are super chill. :-)

I always thought the grey bamboo shark (Chiloscyllium griseum) was much less common in the trade, here in the states, than several other sharks like the blacktip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus), gray smooth-hound (Mustelus californicus), short-tail nurse shark (Pseudoginglymostoma brevicaudatum), banded houndshark (Triakis scyllium), and the others listed in the video. I've never seen Chiloscyllium griseum for sale, even online.

The horn shark (Heterodontus francisci) is native here on the coast of California and I hope to see one in the wild some day! The only wild elasmobranchs I've come across here were a trio of round stingrays (Urobatis halleri).
Same! I could not believe it when I saw mine at a local pet store. I have seen some videos of people spotting Horn Sharks off the coast of California. Sooo cool!
Not looking to get a shark or any fish, but this was a very interesting and educating video!!! Thank you!!!
Great video with honest information. More people should watch this before jumping into ownership of these beautiful animals.
Tbh keeping them in a giant rubbermaid bin seems like a really good idea in terms of space/cost efficiency. And you don't have to worry about overflowing when you stick your arm in to pet them.
It'd be cool if someone actually manufactured "Indoor Shark Ponds" that fit better with the inside of someone's house, were cheaper than a fish tank and better for interacting with the animals, and had a better system for installing filters. Maybe it'd just be an overpriced gimmick, maybe it'd be a great long term solution for keeping sharks as pets.
That would be a good idea for sure!
Recently started working at a local aquarium of mine for volunteer work and I'm going to try and get stuck into the hobby soon but I'm doing my research on things I'd like to own eventually
That’s awesome!
Excellent video! This NEEDS to be seen!
Thank you! 😀
Very cool good information
I kept a horn shark, he was a great pet. I’m looking to get another soon
This video is great I used to wanna get an above ground pool that was a couple thousand gallons and get stingrays and the smooth hound sharks, I love how informative this video was but u kept it straight to the point keep it up
Thank you!
Thank you
If anyone curious now on what are the worlds friendliest sharks are other theen/than these here is the list from on line : Nurse Shark ranked number 4 in documented shark bites , Goblin Shark , Greenland shark , Whale shark , Baskin shark , Sand Tiger shark , Thresher shark as long as not brought into a bout , Salmon Shark 1 attack only but never possitively indentified in any shark attack , Angel Sharks . They are big species I think they all are but don't know if all are big at adult size or not . Didn't check .
Id love to own a shark, but I will never get one if I dont have the resources, skill, and time. For now I prefer keeping freshwater shrimps and crustaceans
AWWWWWW ' FIRST TIME AMELIA DISCOVERED A GO PRO; LOVELY VIDEO AND I WOULD LIKE TO HELP THESE CREATURES AT MY BEST TBH I M 15 BUT I WILL TRY MY BEST TO HELP MARINE LIFE
Yes i have a bamboo shark for 10 year
I dont know how people so often underestimate the size animals need, especially fish; how would you feel if you were confined your entire life to such a tiny area?
Most fish stores do not give out the correct information. These species don’t migrate or anything like that so they do well in small ponds and lagoons but they do need a good amount of room for sure. The 4 sharks featured in this video lived very long, healthy lives. The right set up is definitely key. Hopefully at some point the fish stores will be honest about these species and their maximum sizes.
Would love to care for a coral one day but I’d need loads more experience with salt water tanks
I'd love to have a saltwater aquarium and my own balanced ecosystem inside, with sharks, and rays, and coral, and fish. I also know I'm shit at all of that, and don't trust myself with anything water based more complicated than a beta. I can keep a beta alive for 4 years. I can't manage seamonkeys for a week. Any 'aquarium' I get, will probably be a screen with a live feed to an actual reef. Or someone more compitents aquarium.
I got a little gloshark great video
Zelda is so cute! What breed are they? I'd love to study them :)
She is an Epaulette Shark.
Damn you don't sound 35 :o
Haha thanks I think 😂
Damn, you don;t come across videos like this often. Glad you made this video in the hope it will actually inform some people with proper info instead of your typical pet store info. Hope it will get viewed a lot :)
Thank you! 😀
Where do you buy that big blue tub that ypu showed a picture of that you can put the sharks in?
The blue tub is an aquaculture tank with a viewing window. If the tub/tank is large enough then yes you could set it up like how I have my pond. As long as it is for a small benthic species.
As captain America says “whatever it takes.”
Also is it possible to keep an epaulette shark in an elevated reef tank. With strong supports?
I know epaulettes are walking sharks and don’t often swim, and if they do then they aren’t very strong at it. Just curious. If it’s still not preferable then what is the reason?
Great points! The main issue is that once the shark gets bigger, they become very strong. One of my rescue Eppies who was full grown would sometimes rearange the rocks in my pond. Not a good situation for corals if and when the shark does that. But you are correct in that they mostly walk and are a pretty chill species.
Your a well trained marine biologist with a degree I agree with you
Thank you! I actually don’t have a marine biology degree 😀 I am self taught and I have learned from many who do have that degree.
Now that was a very educational video! You touched down on all the key points, we are new to UA-cam, be sure to check out our channel as we are going down the same road as you, meaning as far as a rescue and proper care of these animals, hats off to you!
Good job!
Joe
Their world aquatics
Thank you! I'll take a look at your channel as well.
Hey, thanks for looking out for these incredible species!
Can you keep coral banded in 75 g?
Not for very long. If you are going to use the tank as a grow out, from a baby (6 inches or less) you’d have maybe 3 months before you would need to upgrade your tank. So there would need to be another system cycled and ready to go incase the growth spurt happens soon than 3 months.
You think a 300 gallon stock tub could work as a tank?
Yes! Check out my 2019 Shark Pond Update video on my channel to see my set up.
Will these fish be happy if I just get one of them? Also should I get a 1000 gallon tank that is 91 inches in diameter and 40ish inches deep. Also they will be happy if I just put some gravel on the ground and a few rocks? Lastly these shark won’t overheat if I put them in my backyard or freeze to death if I put them in my backyard right? For context, my area’s climate is 5-35 degrees Celsius.
Hi, I think a minimum of 2 is a good idea in captivity. That tank size will be good. No gravel or rocks, they need fine sand. Yes, they will. You will need a stable and controlled temperature for these species.
Are they captive bred
Some species are, yes. You can find breeders for most of the commonly kept species nowadays.
Would a 800 gallon tank be enough to care for these sharks.
Yes depending on the dimensions. You want at least a 4 to 5 foot width.
How would u care for a smooth grey hound shark
Good question! They are a cold water species so I unfortunately do not have any experience with them. I have seen some videos about their care here on UA-cam. So I would do some searches here and see what cones up. You can also ask some Smooth Hound keepers in the Shark and Stingray Aquarists group on Facebook. There is lots of good information there.
@@Aquapparel Yayyy Ok thanks 🙏🏼 😊
ngl i clicked on the vid because i saw a walking shark
🤣👍
