It’s a tragedy that some of the greatest authors sadly passed before they could conclude their epic sagas, like Herbert and Robert Jordan.
And Tolkien. He continued working on the wider Lord of the Rings universe until his death. There is important information that we just don’t know because he passed.

Herbert's saga would, like Tolkien's Silmarillion, be finished by his son, which I find incredibly cool.
Let’s hope GRRM won’t be one of them. ASOIAF really deserves its finish and George deserves it too.
Actually, I would argue that Herbert himself was not sure, how to end the Dune saga. The last chapter of the last book feels like the classical deus ex machina.
Having read most of Brian’s work I agree with your opinion of just throwing it out! Besides ignoring the encyclopedia he also disregards Frank final scene with the old man and old woman literally saying they are face dancers! Not thinking machines!
Apparently there was a floppy disk outlining Dune 7 in Frank’s safe, what I wouldn’t give to read that.
I had that impression that the old man and old woman were humans not AI too. I haven't read Brian Herbert's stuff at all. I don't think I want too.

Brian is that kid son who sees $$$$ in his dad’s legacy and capitalized on it, BADLY..
it’s like son inherited a restaurant where people loved his dads cooking and kind service and then he comes in and serves them instant ramen and frozen foods and charged same price or more with high school kids’ rude service instead of hiring professional or putting in the time, heart and thought into replicating or make it close to and keeping what he inherited. Or just sell it to someone who is a true fan.
What Brian and Kevin did to Daniel and Marty - two characters that came across to me in Chapterhouse as SO powerful, insidious, and unfathomably dangerous (and all from JUST a couple of brief encounters and one VERY close call with them), that I was GENUINELY afraid for all our heroes on the no-ship and what these two Face Dancers from The Scattering Era might be capable of doing to them if they were to get their hands on them! They were SO CREEPY and fucking terrifying because of how LITTLE was revealed about them. Frank knew EXACTLY how to reveal ONLY enough about them to make them seem like a credible threat, and NO MORE after that. He used RESTRAINT (a word Brian and Kevin clearly aren't nearly familiar enough with...), and damn do Daniel and Marty feel threatening...
But oh no, that's obviously TOO good of an idea for Brian and Kevin to know how to write effectively for... so how can they idiotize it and turn it stupid enough for two fuckwits like them to write for? Preferably in a way which not only takes a big, steamy shite ALL OVER his dad's original vision and the DECADES-LONG blueballs brought on by Chapterhouse's cliffhanger ending, but does it in a way which ALSO shamelessly refers back that any of their festering, bloated, rabid hippo of a prequel series...

Daniel and Marty can ACTUALLY be the AI characters Omnius and Erasmus, from the WORST three Dune prequel books to yet be written at that time (little did I know, however, just how often they'd manage to outdo THAT little achievement with EACH BOOK CONTINUING TO SUCK MORE ASS THAN THE LAST >_< )! I really hate it when reviewers say that Dune is set in 10 191. They always left the AG part out and it makes a huge difference.
It does make the timeline seem far less plausible through; 30 000 years is way too much time to pass with so little advancements in technology along with any religion even surviving that long into the future.

Have you even read the books? Plenty of humans are plenty different in the books. The only thing in there that is actually (possibly) alien are the sandworms.

It’s interesting in a book series written starting in the mid 1960s, computers were, in the books, thought of as an unacceptable thinking risk without a limit on what they could do. Here we are some 70 years later debating the risk of artificial intelligence.
@Major Problems but that's exactly what happened in prequel books. One of the leaders got super lazy and stagnant allowing the machines to take over.
If Frank left a note for Brian I'm sure it read like this:

@@salad_gold_rancher that's a really interesting question. Imo if he were really enamored with it respecting the existing canon would've been a high priority. I don't think someone with a true love of the original material would've written so many other books pertaining to it. Seems like what an uncreative hack that had a beloved IP dropped into his lap would do. His writing style was not my cup of tea and his blasphemic work on the Dune series was enough for me so I never even looked to see if he's written anything that wasn't handed to him, decent or otherwise. Again just my opinion. Thank the sky mage Frank finished all that he did on his Magnum opus. Any reader's life is all the better for it.
Most fathers would leave their legacy to their son to continue. I see this is more projection to what fans wish what would happen but in reality, I don't think Frank would be as butthurt.
I've given Brian a chance on some of his other novels. I didn't much like them either.

I own a copy of The Dune Encyclopedia and have read a large part of it. I consider it canon as Frank Herbert gave his approval of it. It was a fascinating read to me as I learned more of the background history of that universe. The list of the emperors of House Corrino was especially fascinating to me. I still have not read all of the Dune Chronicles yet though, God Emperor of Dune being the last one I finished. Looking forward to the new movie too.
I've never read the books. Do you think it's a bad idea to watch videos discussing the world of Dune before reading it or watching the movie?
I think the movie explains the characters and the setting pretty well. I don't think you need to know any lore before watching the movie. I've never read Dune or watched anything related to Dune before but the movie was easy to understand in my opinion. I guess it couldn't hurt to dive into some backstory before watching the film, as long as it's before the first book. People who are fans of the books say that the movie was actually really good adaptation.
@@olliefoxx7165 I don't think it's bad to watch these videos because it'll help you create a better image in your mind while you're reading them. A lot of the writing is very abstract and focused on ideas rather than a narrative driven story.
There are a few memorable authors I will always cherish: Frank Herbert, Asimov, William Gibson. I can read these books multiple times and find interesting insights. Especially considering current issues. I agree there are others and I have read most of those. But, these three really got to me. Dune addresses issues that are now a hot agenda. Gibson with his books seems now right around the corner. Asimov is a giant IMO. How can anybody think like that and be relevant so far in the future?
I noticed that a lot of the timeline threads in the story would be used for Warhammer 40k (Machines, advanced society, conflict against AI, etc.), which was honestly pretty cool to learn about.
Tbf, the war against the machines is not ai versus man, its man using ai vs man.

I would imagine space battles ending quickly never having lasting longer than 2 hours. Combat in space is probably nothing like Star Wars and the space guild maintained a strong monopoly an power of space travel making combat in space a rarity by the events of dune.

I love Frank Herbert's original Dune books. Definitely my favorite series of books. I've read a lot of the modern McDune books that his son has co-written. Man they pump out those new books. IMO Frank's original books have the debth of the ocean. The new McDune books have the debth of a puddle.
McDune is right. I didn’t know any better and started with Hunters and Sandworms of and LOVED THEM. Then someone handed me Heretics and o lost my damn MIND and started at the beginning and my life has never been the same, for the better. ♥️
The "Mac dune"books are strait from a huge cache of Frank Herbert's preliminary notes for dune se7an.one can and have argued that Brian didn't even write hunters or sandworms of dune. He just sponged off of dad's talent by proof reading and editing the safe deposit box full of dune se7an pages .his dadwrote the source material.all brian did was split up dad's work into a bunch of books to make a pile of money. You guys are reading labels.

I gave it some thought and I now agree with the "macdune" title. I start dissect the new books a little and I how come in the Brian Herbert books the character "Skytale" is a bene thlealaxuuuu"(spelling)master. And in Dune Messiah he's just a face dancer.

Also as a fan of both Dune and WH40k which i read Dune first i might add, it was really funny seeing how much WH40k influenced or straight up took from Dune and Dune Encyclopedia.
Even though several writers of 40k cited their love and inspiration from Dune in couple occasions, it is a lot worse case than Star Wars'.
Edit: Face Dancers are the direct inspiration to Faceless Men in ASOIAF, one of the couple.
In fairness WH40k seems to me like a cross between Dune and LOTR in space. It has some definite HP Lovecraft influences as well with it's omnipotent eldridge entities and hyper advanced ancient races.

I read dune when I was 15, or 30 years ago. It was difficult to read and recall having to re-read parts to grasp the amazing story. I just seen the recent movie and fell back in love with the story! I can't get enough of it now. Great upload 👍
I agree with you. I finished more than a year ago a year younger, and they’re the best sci-fi books in existence in my opinion. After finishing all the books, I’ve learned so much both in the Dune Universe and for other things in real life.

From my understanding the first Dune book is going to be made into 2 separate movies because the Studio / producers didnt want to greenlight the whole thing out of fear that it wont do well
I been seeing so many people being so surprised that they Just heard theres going to be atleast couple films to cover the first book and the movie will not be the full first book. I dont know how so many are surprised and dont know this. I never read the book (yet) and one of the first things I heard about this movie over year ago was the fact the movie wont be able to cover the full first book. It's legit like the first news I heard so I dont understand how people who been following the dune movie didnt know this?!?! What I know as of right now is it's going to be part 1 and part 2. And there has been some talk about maybe a part 3 but for sure part 1 and part 2. To cover the first Dune book

Dune is such a legendary series
so the Dune timeline can technically encompasses all other sci fi series, terminator, matrix, star trek, star wars, and etc.
They should make a Dune version of Lower Decks, why the hell not?
If Frank's son has to attack his original work to make his more accurate it's safe to say he has no respect for his fathers legacy.
Great video!! It's sad to hear that Frank Herbert's Son Brian isn't honouring the Encyclopedia you were referencing (and even not getting it re-printed). I just thought changing history and cannon was a big corporations "job" given how other SF franchises have been compromised. I have only experienced Dune through the 2003 TV mini series. Thank you for creating this video explaining the true history.
That's because it isn't canon. Herbert even said it in the intro to the encyclopedia.

@@poppag8281 they're okay. Obviously no one is ever going to match Frank's writing style or how he creates his verse. But in my opinion his son and the co-author do a pretty good job rounding out and finishing up the story. And the prequels aren't too bad either. You can go in expecting Frank's writing and then being upset that it's not, you know what I mean? There's a lot of people that cannot stand his son's writings but I enjoy them for what they are and I like the fact I was able to finally finish the story. My two cents.
I am honestly glad his son continues on. He did not destroy anything from the originals and has created a lot of great new stories to tie things together

So if I'm doing my math correctly, 14,255 BG being 1945, that means the year that this UA-cam video went up (2021) it should be ~14,179 BG. The "Little Diaspora" starts at ~2100 CE.
And so the events of Dune (10,191-2 AG) should take place in ~26,391 CE.
The lore and timeline is very interesting!
Let's pause for a moment to remember that the Harkonnen - Atreides feud stretches over more than 10,000 years; all the way back to the Battle of Corrin, where an Atreides called a Harkonnen a coward. Thats some grudge to hold - and influences everything happening 10 millenias later.
Harks were the good guys back then too

@@____________838 I'd assume that there is a difference between House in the newer sense and family before that. Leto II. has memories going back to ancient Greece of the Atreides family; but as the battle of Corrin was where the Empire was basically forged it stands to reason, that the newly crowned Emperor gave thiefdoms to loyal supporters and granted their families these as inheritance and elevated them to noble Houses, sitting in the Laandsrad.

The "Dune" universe, as imagined by F. Herbert, is consistently complex and reverential to the various entities that combine to make up the political, philosophical, and practical dynamics that make this vision work across the five novels in the series. The final installment, "Chapterhouse Dune", is a satisfying conclusion to the story that began in "Dune" the first novel. The fact that Chapterhouse doesn't end by destroying the backdrop in which all of the actions transpire could've been the basis for a new series of tales set in the future described by Herbert senior. Herbert junior, however, rejects that opportunity to instead attempt what amounts to a rewriting of the entire universe itself. The approach taken by Brian and Kevin could've produced some engaging and enlightening narratives that remained faithful to the original premises set up by the father. Instead, they succumbed to the commercial lure of hastily written and unrelated scenarios that simply do not adhere to the logical events that the original demanded. The younger writing team's accounts of the preliminary history that would've resulted in the setting for Dune lack any credible internal logic or reasoning. Where Herbert seniors universe was immense and involved numerous planets, offshoots of humanity and reasonable accommodations to the realities imposed by the religious and political dynamics we are given, the son's storytelling is stilted, limited, and detailed only to the extent necessary to justify each separate novel with little to no consideration given to the impact they would have on the other novels they'd written. The preliminary timeline then becomes a confusing and inconsistent history of events that were meant to provide a context for the Dune narratives.

Ik they have referred to Tarra and that is Earth's technically name like the sun is Sol. The time line being so far into the future it makes it believable to explain the 3stage guild navigator's that do not even look Human anymore.

I like how you I put up that painting of Alexander the Great! I also noticed u mentioned a character a name of "The Great" as the painting of Alexander was up on screen. That was dope and for a person who is obsessed with ancient history and Alexander the Great being the greatest man to ever live in my opinion, I really enjoyed seeing that. I've been excited for the Upcoming dune movie. I never seen any of the older films or read any of the books. But I love A song of ice and fire and Star wars so many times dune came up. And the UA-cam channels I watch alot on A song of ice and fire, the creators. mentioned dune alot like Quinns ideas and some others so I heard about the film being made before I even knew what it was and looked into it and planned on reading it and still do, just havent started yet. Dune is pretty much my most anticipated film. It looks wild. And I've read things from the people who got to see it for a test screening and enjoyed it and the new trailer blew me away. Dune is kind of like a Narcos in Space, your houses of Atreidres (I before E except after C) and Harkonnen are like the cartels, the Emperor and his Sardaukar the special police and military and the various mentors and advisors the Lawyers brokering all of the deals. Then the Fremen with their blue in blue eyes thrown in to act as the Vikings because that series was also good. Forgot, the narcotic being the Merangue, but in the film they never showed how it was Ingested.
Dune timeline would perfectly connect with Matrix. Imagine the events of Matrix as the fabled "Jihad against thinking machines". Completely non-canonical, but jeez, is this idea intriquing. Much more than the simplistic depiction of the Machine Crusade in Brian Herbert's books.
It seems to me that in writing science fiction, if one wants the freedom of imagining whatever types of technology and cultures while still keeping the basis of civilization here on Earth/Terra, to go as far into the future as possible is the way to go. If you were to stay relatively near-future, say less than five to ten thousand years, you are constricted by the viability or believability of advancement from where we are now and you would be faced with more validations needed and explanations to resolve than you would if you just assume natural evolution over an extreme amount of time.
There is no way that a galactic civ could not stop the planetoid.
How do you draw a hard, bright line between computer and non-computer? A thermostat is a computer: it takes two inputs and develops an out using an algorithm. They say they took care of the lack of computers with mentats. But you'd need a mentat on every sophisticated flying machine.

2 hours space battle is easy longest - if you count from time when weapons can be engaged, just imagine today naval battle that would take 2 hours ? isn't it long enough ? i would say the moment everybody starts firing it's about minutes until it's known who wins so 2 hours space battle is pretty damn long one
Awesome, really good lore compilation. I didn't catch tho, how did they FTL before the guild? Did ththe AI plot the hyperlanes? but they inhabited thousands of worlds even prior to the cyborg-genius and the AI age... this is the only thing I don't get, otherwise this lore is one of the best sci-fi I know!
Long slow tube world flights (10k population flying in ecosystem for centuries), or fast flights with a lot of risks at the beginning and the end of travels. Computers and Guild suppress risks.
@@cyrilszecsko6173 I guess, although it would be logical that some of the more resourcefull of Houses would be willing to try making a self-moving star fleet, just to bypass the Guild, as far as I understood the book, nobody was a big fan of this monopoly... unless, it involved "machines with brains like humans", in which case it becomes understandable, as making such a thing would call all of the Sardaucar to yor head...
@@Vladimir_Fedorov27 unless you do really understand and appreciate how huge the universe actually is, you might think there are other ways of transport that allow to reach other planets within one lifetime. but only Guild allows for that in reality of Dune, using spice. folding with computers pre-guild, with navigators after jihad.

They did have FTL before the guild but one in 10 ships disappeared. This fact is revealed in one of the short histories at the end of the Dune novel.
A good bit of of this work was ripped off for the Warhammer 40k universe. Its interesting how Dune has failed to become as popular as it deserves, yet derivates from it have gone to make multimillion dollar franchises. TBH I find the universe lore far more interesting than the conflict portrayed and the drama. When you have so much universe and only focus on a single event, albeit one that affects said universe immensely, it kind of doesn't have the oomph. If they bothered to show the wide implications it creates then maybe it would. We get told a lot happens yet so little is shown.
There is so much to explore, I thank you for the video for illuminating so much of what makes the Duneverse interesting for me. It makes for an awesome RPG setting, I think I might run one using the Starfinder system.
Warhammer is a rip off of a Lot of things including dune, not the other way around.
@@JakeTheBake998 Yes indeed WH is a rip off of Dune, yet Dune was not the one that became a phenomenon. Such is the way with so many things, like 7 Samurai and Magnificent 7. Eitheway, I've been reading a ton more of the Duneverse stuff. I love it.

Rip off is maybe a strong and overly negative term.
The water of Arrakis was 'walled off' by the sandworms' vectors described as 'sandtrout' ..... it was not absorbed, therefore the water of Arrakis could not be seen on the surface but there was water available, hope this helps. PS: Water is deadly to the adult worms but not to the vectors!

I cant wait for the movie, but still nervous. Dune is *so damn deep, an influence on *everything "we" like that followed in some form or fashion in terms of fantasy and science fiction. And the topics covered, Political Intrigue, Prophecy, our relationship with drugs, Sociology, Ecology, Technology, the rise and fall of civilizations, religion....smh religion. Puts so much in perspective. I can go on forever. And so steeped in "real" history and social patterns flawlessly incorporated into their "universe"...greatest "world building" effort I've ever seen...pardon. *Read. Lol. Very hard to adapt to films because its such a sprawling creation that is dependent on *all its parts to get the full import of the series. I just hope it can go long enough to get to God Emperor, the Sci-Fi series was great but stopped just short of my favorite installment. That fictional series changed my world view, I still quote it several times a week, lol.

I prefer the expanded timeline tbh: Right after the jihad, there was a combined effort to strengthen the human mind to compensate for the ban on technology. This led to the formation of various institutions, such as Mentats, Bene Gesserits, Navigators etc. It was realistic because there was an immediate desire to try and minimise the loss with the prohibition on thinking machines. In the older timeline, there was a 2000 YEARS gap between the Butlerian Jihad to the creation of the Mentat order. That is an impossibly long time and frankly ludicrous.
