FAQ's:
Q: I cannot find the options to switch from Legacy to UEFI or switching them didn't help.
A: If you cannot find the options in BIOS to switch or if switching didn't help, move on and continue with the other steps in the video :) What was the result of the HP diagnostic scan?
Q: The test showed my hard drive to be healthy and none of the other fixes helped :(
A: If the diagnostic test showed your HDD to be healthy and none of the other fixes helped, you would now try to reinstall the operating system. You can see those links here;

You can create your own Install Media USB as seen there for free. Or you can purchase it. You can see examples of the correct item to purchase in the Repair Tools list here: www.amazon.com/shop/pcmonkey
Q: The diagnostic test says my HDD is not installed or to check cables?
A: If the diagnostic test shows your HDD to not be installed, that means your HDD may be loose or bad. Try 'Reseating' the HDD first as seen here in this video. Try the diagnostic test again. If it fails to change the scan, I would then replace the HDD and install an Operating System to the new one. You can see how to do that here;

Q: I cannot access the diagnostic test and the other steps didnt help.
A: If you cannot access the diagnostic test, then we dont know if your Hard Drive (HDD) is healthy. We can then proceed, assuming it is. If the other steps in this video do not help, I would then try to reinstall the Operating System (OS).

I keep my Windows 7 PC on usually but decided to reboot it for a "fresh start" But it would not boot but, kept coming back to the window where you either boot normally or : "Last known configuration that worked" (something like that). Couldn't even get into safe mode. I thought it was the hard drive, power supply or motherboard. It recognized my secondary hard drive that had an old install of Windows XP and, in my desperation, I tried to boot from that drive but, no dice. So, I disconnected the power from that drive but, it still didn't recognize the OS on my boot drive. I searched UA-cam and found your video. When one of your tips was to check the time in the BIOS, I noticed it was off by 3 days so, I changed the CMOS battery and, it booted. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks for your video. So when I try to system restore (F11) it goes straight back to the error screen “no boot disk” etc? I’ve reset the boot options to default in BIOS and made sure my hard drive is at the top of my boot order. Also I only have option for UEFI and not legacy so I cannot enable legacy instead. Any advice please??
1. Were you able to run the diagnostic scan?
2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?
Hey i have a hp630 laptop i want to upgrade it from hdd to ssd i purchased ssd and installed it in the laptop and it says that hard disk not detected then i installed the ssd in another hp laptop and installed windows on it works just fine then i again installed the ssd in the main laptop and go to windows setup and there i can see a unallocated drive i tried allocate it and got a error do you have any solution for this ??
thank you for the video. I tried upgrading my HP Elitebook 8470p from a HHD to a SSD. I cloned the HHD to the SSD, upon booting I received a "no boot device found" error. I played around with the bios settings but no luck. I put the HHD back in and received the same error. I ran a hard drive diagnostic and passed the "Smart check" and "Short DST" . I checked the boot sequence and it shows the "notebook hard drive" is selected as my first boot option. I reset the bios to defaults as well. at this point i'm unsure, I may just have to reinstall windows. Any ideas?
Yes :( Unfortunately at this point, I would try a new install and see if that works.
@PC Monkey I grabbed a working ssd from another pc and it booted just fine. I just wanted to confirm it wasnt my motherboard. Maybe some type of glitch while cloning. Luckily I backed up all data and just need to transfer it over. Thanks again for your help! Liked and subbed

Hello, i had this error when installing or updating an application, it turns blue and then turns black with the boot device not found. I can easily go out of it but it repeats when i try to install something
Would you be able to help with a problem I'm having. I have a HP Probook I used at an old job. I was made redundant and was allowed to keep the pc. But I hadn't used it for a long time and couldn't remember my login credentials. I then searched on youtube for ways to get around not knowing my login credentials but they all involved BIOS changes, and I also don't know the BIOS Admin password or the Recovery ID code. I then followed some more complex steps involving DISKPART and now my PC is screwed. When I start it I get the 'BootDevice Not Found' message, I can run the checks and my hard drive Passes, however anything that requires any sort of change, BIOS Setup, Boot Menu, System Restore, anything at all, brings me to the BIOS Admin password screen and thats a dead end. I have the Windows 11 USB but if I can't get into the Boot Menu then it won't know to access it will it?? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

what would you recommend to do if it says smart check passed, but short dst warning?
I would then want to replace the HDD. You may be able to try any Restore or Repair options in BIOS to get Windows to properly load in order to save the DATA but if not, the DATA and the drive may be too bad and may need to be replaced anyway :(
Hello, I got to replace my faulty SSD in my HP Envy x360 convertible. After replacing the SSD I got a 3FO error. The UEFI boot order prioritises the former SSD drive. Can you please guide me on sorting out this? thanks!!
I have a problem where I ONLY get the "no hard drive found" when I RESTART from Windows. If I power down completely and then power up, it starts no problem. It's a brand new Samsung 870 EVO SSD cloned from the original hdd. I had this same issue with a new WD Blue SSD on another laptop, and eventually it stopped powering up altogether after a few months. It's not a BIOS or reading, or even connection issue. I can reinstall the old HDD and it will work flawlessly. I used the same cloning software for a Samsung 990 PRO NVME M.2 on a third HP laptop with no problem. I've tried Samsung Magician, AOMEI Backupper and a dual-dock hard drive reader with independant cloning capability with same results.
Hi! I was working on my HP 360 last night and all was fine. I had noticed that my laptop prompted me to download/install a windows update. I did and hit the "update and shutdown button".
Cue to today, I turn on my computer to find the issue stating "Boot device not found" in your video. I went through the steps, did the quick scans (everything passed), and attempted to configure the BIOs. Two things I will comment were off though:
1) When I attempted to hit F12 or System Recovery, as stated in your video, it took me back to the main "Boot Device is not found" message.
2) I have not attempted reseating the hard drive. The HP 360 backing is a pain to open up.
I can attempt to reseat the hard drive trouble shoot fix and come back with a reply to see if that works. Unfortunately, I work on my laptop and worried that all my files are doomed. Are they salvageable? Would need to buy a new hard drive and take it to a computer store to transfer data THEN reinstall OS?
Thank you for your time and help!
-Eddy
If the Restore or Repair steps are not helping, then I would try a new install of the operating system. Yes, there is a chance you could lose DATA if you dont perform the new install correctly and choose the options to keep all your files. Its up to you if you want to try or take the HDD somewhere to have them see if they can get the DATA off assuming its ok.
I reminded that hdd drive is ok with os on it that works on another computer. Any usb bootable or hdd os system can not be read. The problem is with the computer. But i can not fix it. Or find where the problem from. The computer is hp mini 311-1000 model
So I have a question about this topic I’ve had this happen to me yesterday to my beats hp laptop & was wondering how to fix this issue? thanks. Also how do you put your hard drive to be first on the boot list?
1. Assuming you have an HP computer, can you run the diagnostic scan as seen here? Are you able to access the boot order as seen here? That is where you would change the HDD to the first place.
2. Also, did anything happen before this issue appeared? Liquid spill, overheating, Windows update, etc?

So my computer has been booting up just fine and I was even playing games and doing things on it today. However in the middle of playing games I noticed one of my applications had closed and I didnt remember closing it. I had a game open and was playing it and also had chrome open. I went to reopen the application that was closed- it would start up and then never open. I then tried opening task manager: I would see it for a bit and then that would close. I figured i'd restart my computer at this point after my game, which I did.
After it restarted it suddenly said Boot Device Not Found/Hard Disk - 3FO and whatnot.
After running tests my ATA 1000GB drive is fine, but my NVMe 256GB TOSHIBA is the one having issues and does not pass the smart check. Can someone explain to me what the NVMe drive is exactly and what I should do?
Hi. I have a HP Envy laptop with the blue error of no boot device. Came about after I updated drivers from what seemed like a genuine updater. Systems check seems okay. On Bios I can't find options to repair/restore. Any help please?
1. The diagnostic scan said all the hardware was ok?

Yes :) Storage and HDD are the same thing

What was the result of the HP diagnostic scan?
The last hard drive I had got a boot loop, and after trying many methods it worked for a few hours and died shortly after.
Problem: So I got a new hard drive about a month before this and installed it. And since yesterday, the hp notebook I have it installed on got stuck on the hp logo screen so I did a short dst for hard drive and it failed. But I don’t think it’s a problem with the hard drive dying since it’s new
Oh and I forgot to mention this, but sometimes in bios, only the system diagnostic option shows up
I’m thinking it could be a hard drive connection issue so I’ll probably check that in a moment
@@OnigiriKyoko If the diagnostic test is failing the HDD then its either bad or there is a connection issue. You should double check the connecting ribbon cables or boards to make sure they are good

Hey! Thanks so much for the video. I got my computer to work unplugging my keyboard. Now I have gotten into BIOS, but not sure how to reorder the boot order. In BIOS I move over to storage, then open Boot Order. There it lists the following:
UEFI Boot Sources
Windows Boot Manager
USB Floopy/CD
USB Hard Drive
Legacy Boot Sources
ATAPI CD/DVD Drive
USB Floppy/CD
Hard Drive SATA0
Network controller (Realtek PXE B04 D00)
I do not have the offending keyboard plugged in at this time. Should I have it plugged in when trying to reorder?
Thanks so much, you videos are fantastic
Usually, the first on the boot order should be where the operating system is located and where your trying to boot from. In most computers, that would be your Hard Drive. If they keyboard is unplugged, try using an external USB keyboard to make the selection in the boot order.
It worked for me thenks my hand drive was loose

I have an hp envy x 360. I am getting a no boot device found error. When I run the quick diagnostic, it says that i do not have a hard drive. I took the bottom of my computer off and took the hard drive out and put it back. I changed the system date and time and followed all of the steps in this video and your previous video on the same issue. I am still getting the error. Can you please help me?
After reseating the HDD, did you run the diagnostic scan again? What was the result? Also, after changing the Date/Time settings, did the settings stay the correct way or did they revert at the next restart?
@@PC_Monkey Yes, I did rerun the scan and I got the same error. When I changed the date/time, they updated and stayed the correct way on restart.

If your diagnostic test cannot see your HDD, that means its either bad or loose. I would first try 'reseating' the Hard Drive. You can see that done here in this updated video: ua-cam.com/video/lKb2pPQrkRk/v-deo.html

Could it be that the cables that connect to the hdd are failing if possible?
@@matthew_dipietro7935 Yes, if you have cables that run from the HDD to the Motherboard then those may be failing. In addition to reseating the HDD, you should reseat those as well. Also, if they are bad, the new install will fail.
@@PC_Monkey by fail, do you mean that even if I install new cables, the hard drive won't work still
@@matthew_dipietro7935 I mean that if the cables are bad, then when you try to install a new operating system to the HDD, that install will most likely fail as the computer wont be able to communicate with the HDD due to the bad cables.

Water spilled on my laptop now it shows no bootable device found. There is also no Legacy support button available, no hard drive check. What should I do?
After a liquid spill, you want to first make sure the computer is 100% dry. You would turn your computer off immediately by pressing and holding the power button until the computer turns off. Then you would disassemble the computer as much as your comfortable with, at least trying to remove the bottom case. Then you would turn it on its side and let dry for a couple days. Have you done this yet or are you sure the computer is dry?

After i did a bios update my hp laptop does not start. It also says bootdevice not found. Get a screen where i with the arrow keys can select to boot up. It asks if i am sure ? Select yes and then it can find the boot device. It is a m2 ssd.
It is very annoying because i have it under my desk with brackets. So everytime i have to disconnect everything. Crawl under the desk. Open it and use the laptop keyboard. Because the external logitec only works after bootup.
Wished i never did that bios update.
It is a G3 17 inch with a Xenon.

Getting into the bios is not a problem. But while powering up it does not see a bootdevice. After a bios update.
And that is horrible. Cause i have installed with brackets under desk. So everytime i have to crawl under it. Unplug everything and slide it out the brackets. Power it up. And then putting it back in the brackets and reconnect everything. 🤔
I have choosen a 5 s bootdelay in the bios. Now it boots ok. I keep that hp laptop always on. But now if it powers down or reboots then atleast it will boot up as it should. No crawling under my desk again.
I have bought a second hand docking station. Have it connected by thunderbolt. It can not power the laptop.
Should it be used icw with another cable ? I also see a round port on the laptop next to thunderbolt. Same connector on the dockingstation.
So i think i need a thunderbolt cable that also has a cable with that round connector ? ? Any idea ?
