Wow, that's probably the most concise review of the GTI on youtube. I learned some things from this video that I haven't before even after weeks of research on this vehicle.
Nice review, thanks. Just a few corrections, in combination with the DSG gearbox the ACC system does brake the car down to a standstill if the car in front stops. It even starts again on its own if the standstill is no longer than a few seconds. Optional rims are the 18 inch Austin and 19 inch Santiago, 20 inch is not available. In combination with 18 and 19 inch wheels the DCC dampers (magnetic shock absorbers) are highly recommended to keep the ride barerable on poor road surfaces! By the way, the Performance version can also be recognized by the GTI badges in red, on grill and boot. The standard GTI comes with the silver badges, tiny detail but still. The boot space can be enlarged by lowering the bottom cover by about 10cm, in the movie it was placed in the highest position, reducing the available boot space.
GTI_CHHA Hey, thanks for the interesting info. Yeah the rims as seen in the other comment, I misread that. About the ACC, I still had the last VW car where that didnt work until zero. They must have improved it now then, I will check that in the next DSG car with ACC !
Only just 'discovered' this autogefuhl channel. This bloke is great but he really cracks me up. My missus bought me a Golf GTI recently. It is a great little car and pretty cost effective.
darkpill Thank you very much. This video hasnt been on for long, although I am altogether very happy with our views and the feedback. But more views are never bad for us, so we are happy if you spread the word, like and comment us :)
Thomas really has a unique way of presenting about cars. He gives so much information. This review sold me on the car... Thanks Thomas, extremely helpful.
Another informative review!Late last year I was considering the Scirocco however,I decided to order a Golf R.I've been told it should arrive (In Australia) towards the end of February so I can't wait! There is approximately a $7,000 AUD difference between the GTI PP Vs Golf R.The main reasons why I bought the Golf R was the fact.I've owned fwd and rwd cars but never owned an awd car.The new car will not also be my first VW but also the first car that with an automatic or rather DSG transmission. After driving for over 30 years maybe I becoming a little lazy :)
hondacar Hey, thanks for that :) Great to hear you ordered on in Australia, you gonna have a lot of fun with it. Indeed if you are ok with the extra price, its quite nice to feel the AWD acceleration as you not only get pulled in the front but also feel that push from the back :)
Just Reviewed the New 2015 Golf R in the US , I must say i'm impressed so much I'm thinking of purchasing ,the only thing might change my mind is the Price around $ 39000 US. Looks like a Great Car ! Thanks Joe
Yes Thomas...'crack you up' is a vernacular expression (slang) meaning 'makes me laugh' rather than simply finds amusing. You are very thorough in a way which is quite refreshing and unusual: but I guess that you knew that anyway. Keep up the good work in what is quite a niche market.
@autogefuhl thank you for bringing up the issue about leather and that so many animals have to die just to have leather seats. Thank you VW for choosing to have other faux leather options. I love your comment also about adopting from a shelter! I will never have anything but a VW. Great video!
Yes, because cheating emission regulations is very environmentally friendly! Thank you volkswagen for cancer! I will only buy volkswagen from now on. Hypocrits. Bullshit.
Great video! Your videos are the best and my go to source for auto reviews. I just purchased a 2016 GTI and ordered a 2017 golf Alltrack to replace our mk6 golf and golf wagon TDIs which are part of the buyback program in the US. If the golf r was more available I would have considered it but they are hard to find. Thanks again for your videos, they helped us make these decisions on the new cars.
joako2706 Hi! Thank you very much, nice to hear that. Good point, I'll keep Alfa Romeo in mind and try to get a 4C or a Giulietta QV for later this year.
I maybe late to the party but thank u! that was a well comprehensive review. i'm taking receipt of a 2015 Golf GTI performance and your video has helped me understand more of the cars features i.e cruise control and parking assistance. Its got me even more excited!!
A couple of months ago I bought a 5 door 2015 pure white GTI Autobahn (U.S.). Interesting perspective. Also cool to see the different options available in Germany vs here in the states. Definitely jealous over the larger HD infotainment screen and the sharp LED taillights.
Brilliant Thomas. I love this car. So glad I found your channel, best reviews I've seen. Keep up the good work ;-) Kind regards and best wishes from England.
Excellent review. This makes me see the point of the Scirrocco even less than before. I might have already said this, but I think that a review of the new Mercedes C-Class (perhaps as a C400 saloon) would be really good.
Anwar Afhim Hey, thank you very much. I still like the Scirocco, however the Golf is more comfortable. And the Scirocco is awesomely cheap in comparison to the GTI. About the C-Class, I think we could go for the new AMG version later this year, thanks for the wish. Next Mercedes car in line will be the all-new S-Class Coupé !
Enjoyed the Review ! Looks like a Good vehicle in general. I'm not sure i would buy it ,but now a days i'm concerned with safety equipment and MPG and total ownership costs, and very important reliability. The VW reliability in the US in past , has been lack luster so i hope they have sorted this out . Thanks for the review , great work ,its appreciated ! Joe
Hi Thomas, Nice touch with the oval spectacle frames, sporty and ideal for the GTI. I prefer the 6-speed manual, especially in a sporty car. Generally, I find manual transmissions more fun to drive and I really enjoy being more involved with the machine while shifting. I wonder why automakers are pushing for automatic transmissions these days (I really miss the clutch driving an automatic). One minor comment - it's insulation (Isolierung auf Deutsch, insulation in English, but that's your German touch, which I enjoy as well). :-) Enjoyed it! Cheers, Govind
If you don't mind me asking, what part of Germany are driving around in here? My guess would be Baden-Württemberg but I suppose it could be somewhere in the East as well. :)
AusländerMitGeld AMG Vielen Dank! Also grundsätzlich bin ich eher Automatik-Fan.
As always, great job Thomas! If I could ask your advice about the comfort of the car... I'm around 6'2 and do around 2 hours of travel to work and back a day. What would your thoughts be about the ride comfort? Thanks, Steven from NZ.
Hey Steven, the Golf is among the leading cars in this segment for sure. With your/my height however, I usually prefer compact SUVs or mid-size cars for the long-term run.
Hy, could you tell me about the space inside the car.... i am 1.96m, and if i set the driving seat to my high how much space is left behind, would there be enough space for a person lets say about 1.70-1.80m high? thanks Great reviewe :)
hey, that could be very close. Better go with the Passat then imho if you always travel with 4 adults. You see how it works for me with 1.86m in the video
Autogefühl I surtanly will do so😀, I am thinking of getting a new gti Performance this year and your Videos Are a great help👍🏾. Greetings from Unterfranken 😀
Excellent production values and informative commentary, thanks for putting this together. A shame that NA Golfs and GTIs and R's don't get those awesome LED tail lights =(
+Spartan360 and why would that be a reason for it to not be reviewed? even if it's worse than the gti (which is not, it's the same) it should be reviewed
Like The Way you Review the Cars. What is your opinion on Santa Fe 197ps all Wheel Drive. If possible can you please do a Review? Many thanks. Greetings from Weinheim. Vielen Dank im Voraus
Sreeharsha Kaligiri Hey, thank you very much! I did not drive the Santa Fe myself yet, however there is a Grand Santa Fe article in German on our website. Just google "hyundai grand santa fe autogefuehl". I will ask for a Santa Fe for a video review this year!
Finally there it is, my Car =) And again a very good review! I ,miss some information about "DSG", "DCC" and maybe a little closer considerations about the different driver assistance systems. The fwd-system by VW still can handle the 310hp i got whit my custom downpipe+exhaustsystem and some small changes on the control unit. I really wont miss all these little details in my GTI, especially the DSG gearbox, which massive affects the sound... drive trough urban canyons causes goosebumps, when the next gear gets kicked in via the optional shiftpaddles... "brrrrooopffff !"
+Autogefühl one last question, during the city driving, were you using the eco mode and the start-stop function or just normal driving? I almost made a decision to buy one but I am worried that some of the tests on the internet say that city comuting will consume 12-13l/100km...
+Perivoje Stojanovski Start/Stop is nonsense imho. Caus when you miss the green light and lack 1 second behind, you accelerate harder and outfuel the less consumption of the start stop stuff. About eco drive mode with DSG, that one is good caus you can use the coasting function then. Let the car roll and dont hammer the throttle that often. You got it in your own hand actually. 12-13 litres ... I dont know what crazy guys drove that car then ;-)
+Autogefühl it totally makes sense what you are saying for the start/stop. Ok this encouraged me to be honest:))) because i started leanong towards the updated polo gti which is also very powerfull...
thank you. im still happy i chose a cupra 280 :) slight sidenote, the visual quality of the upload has no bearing on it's content but i tried watching with three browsers and they wouldn't go beyond 360p so i guess there's a fault with HD?
Weight distribution. Get a pair of lightweight wheels shod with Michelin pilot sports, a new exhaust and air system. Stage 1 upgrade and drive it for a year. Obviously you can do more after that.
@@kennythomson4934 yes. I agree a stage 1 is what is if done. I think I’d have more fun in remapped gti than stock R being fwd. of course all in a manual as well. I want the full driving experience. But I just wanted to see why someone shared the same thinking as myself but wanted to hear first hand experience such as yourself. 👍
I have the DSG as I’m old and mouldy at 47. I’ve also had that remapped for a proper stage 1 drive. Get a dog bone mount of quality to compliment the power my friend.
@@kennythomson4934 lol you’re not that much older than me. I’m doing just about enough to keep that mould away. I think the manual gearbox helps to keep me sharp 😅
Nicola Ruggiero Thanks, that's great to hear :) That big sat nav is really amazing, one of the best at all. Maybe VW offers that one in the future when they change their strategy in the US now
Thomas thanks again, just bought a 16 GTI S 4-Door with Lighting package and 6 Speed Manual. Truly a dream car for sport driving / MPG / and daily commuting... and the white looks sharp!
Zachary Ong Octavia vRS is great indeed. Have you seen our review? We got the wagon already in the video review; this spring we will review the Octavia vRS sedan.
Kleiner Fehler, außer den 20''ern (lol). In Verbindung mit dem DSG bremst das ACC auch bis zum Stillstand. Vll hier noch ne kleine Anmerkung reinmachen. Sonst gutes Video
But US model has a smaller Navigation screen, pathetic. We don't have this car in US, navigation is only on Autobahn model and that one does not have plaid seats. I'm so irritated that we're not having the same GTI cars as they are sold in Europe.
Morgan Coetzee PS explainedThough it’s still commonly used by carmakers, PS or Pferdestärke (horse-strength in German) was actually replaced by kW as the EU's ‘legal’ measurement of engine power in 1992. One PS is about 98.6% of a brake horsepower - the two are virtually interchangeable, and PS is sometimes referred to as 'metric horsepower'.
J Law exactly. Just checked. Its 18. Thats also the maximum in the configurator. Sorry, they just looked so massive and I was so sure i read R20 on them. Must have been a vision mistake while looking at them in rather dark weather the first time.
A bit disappointed in those borderline ugly old fashion plaid seats an AWD version become so much more useful year round when there is winter climate to consider

+Thabang Mokoena We do have that, just search for ' autogefuehl polo gti '
But US model has a smaller Navigation screen, pathetic. We don't have this car in US, navigation is only on Autobahn model and that one does not have plaid seats. I'm so irritated that we're not having the same GTI cars as they are sold in Europe.
***** agree
Performance pack offers 220BHP not 230 btw.
Morgan Coetzee Hm, German PS number is 230 definitely for the Performance pack. Maybe BHP / German PS hp difference :)
***** Must be, most upsetting for the UK drivers!
Morgan Coetzee Could be the difference between PS & BHP yea
Morgan Coetzee PS explainedThough it’s still commonly used by carmakers, PS or Pferdestärke (horse-strength in German) was actually replaced by kW as the EU's ‘legal’ measurement of engine power in 1992. One PS is about 98.6% of a brake horsepower - the two are virtually interchangeable, and PS is sometimes referred to as 'metric horsepower'.
20inch alloys? You can configure Golf with maximum 19inch alloys
slapi2006 Sorry that might be a mistake. Checking tomorrow morning again :)
should be 18in
J Law exactly. Just checked. Its 18. Thats also the maximum in the configurator. Sorry, they just looked so massive and I was so sure i read R20 on them. Must have been a vision mistake while looking at them in rather dark weather the first time.
***** The maximum is 19inch :D
slapi2006 German configurator says 18 for me ... hmmm
I've owned 2 VW Golfs but not GTI. I think this is the time.
Pvulture b heh go for it :)
i'm buying this car this week in US
***** great choice!
3dr performance gti 😊
24:41 R8 on sight!
tokekkk you bet. Race would have been interesting :D
A bit disappointed in those borderline ugly old fashion plaid seats
an AWD version become so much more useful year round when there is winter climate to consider
