As a 37 yr old male who ordered a Polo GTI 2018 in Denmark in Limestone grey I leaped for joy when AJ said that the Polo GTI felt like a good car compared to the UP! IT was even comparable to the Golf Gti. Obviously Golf GTI is a dreamcar, and is good/best in certain aspects (Space, poshness, image, looks etc.). But if you look at "bang for buck" and have no need for a bigger car, I would strongily agree with AJ as I have tried all three cars as well. If I had the cash, Golf GTI might be the one, but I don't. I obviously like the Golf as well, but I can't justify the extra 85,000 Danish Crowns (12,000 Euros) for a base spec Golf GTI vs a top spec Polo GTI DSG6. Remember options cost around 20% of the car in VW group cars universe!
What did it for me was the sound actually. Both inside and outside, you can hear this is not a regular car: Think bass, pops and bangs!

I agree, also ordered one in Reef Blue. Coming from a regular MK5 Golf, it didn't feel like moving to a smaller car when taking long test drives. The 200hp also makes it proper GTI quick and the DSG is amazing (especially in normal day to day commuting, I would imagine). I don't see the added value the Golf GTI brings at ~+10k€. How long is your delivery? Mine is 5 months!
Tuomas Haikonen wow u lucky man. I ordered mine in 2017. Its coming in august, so 8 months waiting time. They did not expect so many to be sold in Denmark. If you order one now, you get it in december 2018 or even 2019. Kinda crazy

I was waiting for this comparison between the Polo GTI and the Golf GTI and AJ delivered. Fantastic, articulate review. When you mentioned how you had to stiffen your body as you went into corners with the Up GTI, I knew exactly what you meant. I think you've helped me decide to get the Polo GTI. Also want to mention the photography and sound was top notch - great job!

Great in-depth review! VW has dropped the Golf GTI's price by a lot compared to last model, but still the Polo is so very good value any way you look at it. It does't feel small inside by any means (I'm 180cm tall), which was my biggest concern, and now that its wider and longer it doesn't look like a small car. (this coming from a biased soon to be Polo GTI owner)

Great Review of present-day GTI's. I haven't driven the up! GTI or new Polo GTI, but I think I still prefer my original 1983 Mk1 GTI! Biased?! Me? They say the up! GTI is probably most like the spirit of the Mk1. And I loved the Lupo GTI (and 3L). Thanks for the video. Ronda makes a nice location, too.

I like the styling of the Golf more than the Polo but I’d still take the Polo. And even though the Up isn’t a true GTI, it still makes me like the Up in general, which I didn’t before. So for that, it’s a success.
1videofiend I like the styling of the golf more (mainly the rear looks better to me). But the Polo is a better size car for me and I like smaller cars in general. And it’s cheaper, and it drives well. So it’s only really the looks that are a slight downside. But I could accept that because everything else I like better on the Polo.

Spot on this! Nice work . I have an Up (the standard 1.0 though) as my first car . Mainly because of the extortionate insurance prices in the U.K. having driven a Polo and an older Golf , I agree that the Up! GTI just isn’t really much of an icon and will never be a true ‘sporty car’ due to a number of factors such as the seating position, shape e.c.t . In my opinion also The Polo is the best bet to wear the GTI badge at the moment with light weight and is very surprising and composed for what it is. The Golf is a truly nice machine approaching Audi in quality. However, they are getting quite heavy now and therefore aren’t really the great hot hatches that they once used to be. I look forward to what the Golf MK8 has to bring .. However I hope for my first ‘performance car’ it will be the previous gen 1.8TSI Polo when the time comes as these were far more appealing to me seeming to have a higher quality interior and sporty looks with a 3door option available lacking in the current gen Polo.

Very great review and a cool video overall. I had a choice between a new Golf GTI and a Polo GTI and I picked the latter. Ordered myself a limestone grey Polo GTI. Somehow it looks cooler to me than the Golf and also not much difference performance wise and not worth 10k euros more :)

Great overview of these models, AJ! The question of which is simple in the States: the Golf GTI as neither the Polo nor the up! is available. The GTI has a surprisingly large amount of storage depth and space when put up against the cross-overs and is a more nimble / fuel efficient option when compared against most of the cute utes.

It sucketh. It’d be nice if we in USA could get our hands on the Polo and T-Roc. In my opinion, those cars could give some of the cute utes migraines and sleepless nights. I’ve tweeted to VAG twice on the T-Roc and Polo
The Polo would be a really neat option at 200hp (probably ~185hp on US gasoline) in the States, but smaller cars seem to be a hard sell in this market.
Hi,Thanks for the video. At 18:10 you say that there are many different choiches of colors to choose from for the decor inlay. As far as I know you can only choose the standard red or the optional Deep Iron color on the gti.That's it. Euro 30.000 starting price in The Netherlands, configured a Reef Blue one for Euro 36.000

Down to the the wheels, the Polo looks alot like the old Kia Rio :D Nothing bad - the Rio was a really good looking car :P
I'd say the Polo is my fav as well here. The Golf is probably more comfortable but the Polo is closer to the proper GTI idea. The Up is cool to, but it is TOO small for my taste.

Do you guys think that the 2015 poli gti head lights would work on the up?
I can't be the only one that thinks both the Polo and UP wheels are better than what they slapped on the Golf GTI..
Overall looks, can't beat the original (or latest version of the original). The UP looks like an EV no matter how you dress it up, and the Polo is so close in size and styling to the Golf it makes you say.."why?". I guess that's why we don't get the Polo in North America, but even so still wish we did. The Polo (on the same MQB platform) has potential to outhandle the Golf.
I certainly agree that the two door, looks more sporty, with its larger doors.
The 5dr may be more convenient, to allow rear passenger access to the rear seats, but it does not look as nice.
I like how the Up! has 'UP' on the number plate too.
Came to the same conclusion and bought a POLO GTI. No regrets love the car and my bank account is not sobbing.
Important question regarding the multi mode suspension - before I order a Polo GTI.
The Golf’s DCC system is fully active and allows the car in comfort mode to ride quite comfortably on terrible roads. The Polo GTI has only two settings and the suspension system isn’t active. Nobody in my VW showroom can answer a very important question regarding Polo’s adjustable suspension:
What is the “Normal” mode in reality? Is it normal sport suspension level and “sport” setting makes it even harder?
Or is it softer than standard GTI’s unadjustable suspension?
I want to order mine ASAP, as the delivery dates are crazy already. I’d be very grateful for dropping some light on this issue.

hey m8, the Polo GTI DCC in normal mode is already a little stiffer than the standard suspension (but not uncomfortable). Sport Mode makes it even stiffer then.

I havent tried the adaptive, but for me even with 18" wheels the Polo GTI isn't uncomfortable by any means, not shaky/jarring - of course firm, but thats a given :) (*I also ordered one and without the adaptive suspension).
The new Golf GTI better be good, otherwise Polo all day long.

The new Golf GTIs are getting to heavy. They are expensive as they come with a very high specification, LED lights, adaptive cruise, etc etc. The MK 5 was fabulous, and you could buy it fairly cheap as it had very little added to it. No special lights, no cruise control nothing. You even had to pay for a centre console upgrade! The Polo has 200bhp like the Mk5, and is the same size as a Mk1! What a great combination, power to weight ratio, with enough safety (5 star NCAP), to let you enjoy yourself at a good price. A good choice of winner!

I do like a lot of the UP, but oh man, how much i want a automatic transmission into that UP GTI and TSI
I like the polo best. its not that slower than the golf, but cheaper, and is still much better than the up . who only have 115hp... The design, in and out is just better.
i have just bought the 2021 polo gti, for these reasons you state, the golf is too big now and too heavy, the Polo is the same size as the old golfs with with the golf gti power from years ago so more than enough and with a stage 1 tune you can get Golf gti output,

Here in Ireland the Polo GTI starts at €32,000 and the 230hp Golf GTI starts at €38,000. Yeah...we get ripped off

In my opinion the new polo GTI looks better than the golf GTI... and it's practical enough and way more affordable too.
The alloys on the Golf GTi are just terrible - better wheels on the UP

None of the new batch of GTI's are affordable in their price segment. The Korean automakers especially are beating them to it.

Up Gti is 1,478mm in height; Golf 6 GTI is 1,501mm in height, don't recall anyone complaining about how tall the Golf 6 was...
Michael Ptohopoulos a car is considered tall if the the ratio of its width to height favours a higher centre of gravity. Other factors such as ground clearance and seat height also weigh in to a make a car feel "tall".. This is what is meant here.

As far as I can see the Polo weighs 1480 Kg. The Golf GTI performace weighs 1337 Kg. So I'm surprised that you claim the Polo should be lighter. But maybe it feels lighter
