  • If you make skincare products with water and a preservative, then you will need to send them to a lab to be tested for preservative efficacy before selling your own skincare range. By testing them in advance with CRBS Dip Slides, you can know for certain that your products will pass or fail, saving you money.
Of course, you may just want this for fun, to test your own skincare collection in case you are one of those people who keeps things way too long!
Either way, enjoy this random chatty video and if you want your own incubator and slides then Dip Slides have kindly offered my viewers a discount code.

I love the dip-slides. Much cheaper to buy them
In the UK and have them shipped to the US than buy them
    Here.

I’ve purchased an assessment for a water based cream where the testing has already been done (MAF cosmetics). I’m wondering whether I need to do this TVC testing legally? I think I will anyway, for my own piece of mind, but wondered whether it was a legal requirement to do random tests over time? It doesn’t state anything on the CPSR, just to follow GMP. Also, with a water based product, how quickly will yeasts and mould start to grow…could you test something that was made a few days prior? The CPSR states PAO of 6 months. Thanks.

No, the tests only need to be done once, as MAFs lab will have deemed the products preservative effective in a range of temperatures, so as long as it's made as per their CSPR and instructions, it should be stable. But, as you mentioned, it is good to test each batch yourself. With the dipslides I link to, then you'd get a result on the yellow side within 24-48 hours and the Yeast and mould takes longer, sometimes up to a couple of weeks to form if there is any.

@@revegacosmetics thanks, this is really helpful…I will still test my product for my own peace of mind, but grateful to know I’m legally compliant 😊. It’s a wonderful recipe with some flexibility as to which emulsifier to use…so I now need to order the other two to test which gives the best skin feel. The glyceryl stearate & PEG 100 with cetearyl turned out well…but there was a little bit of soaping, so I’m going to try Ecomulse with Cetyl alcohol, and maybe the GS a& PEG 100 again with Cetyl to see if that makes a difference 😀. I can only seem to get Ecomulse from Bay House with a minimum order spend of £50…so time to order more SCI powder 🙈😂

Are you supposed to test each batch? If so, how is testing possible? I ask because, say you make a lotion 2/1/24 you want to sell it. You do a home stability test a couple days later. All is well, do you have to send it in then? How long does it take to get back once you send a product in? If it takes months to get back, how can you sell it because all your products would be sitting on your shelf wasting time on your shelf before the results come back.
    What am I not understanding?

Stability and challenge testing is done with a batch of products that aren't sold, prior to release, so a good time before release. Assuming you follow good manufacturing each time you make the same formula then you only need to do these tests once. However, if you have products containing water, you should also use dip slides to test a sample of each batch for contamination before sale.
